We are honored to have a legend on the podcast today, Seth Tibbott founded Turtle Island Foods in 1980, now the “Tofurky Company.” For 15 years Seth pursued his dream as a pioneer of the early plant-based foods movement. In 1995, Seth introduced the first nationally marketed vegan holiday roast named “Tofurky” which soon became the most well-known meat alternative brand in the US. Tofurky is now a household word (even spell check knew what I was trying to type!) It has been mentioned on numerous TV shows, including The X-Files, The Tonight Show, and even as the answer to a $400 question on Jeopardy. Seth has chronicled his “40-year overnight success story” in a new book, In Search of the Wild Tofurky. On this episode, Seth talks about the history of plant based foods in the US (going back farther then you think!) as well as the history of the iconic Tofurky. He then takes us into the future as well with innovations in mock meats with advances like alt protein fermentation and 3D printed steak!  Resources:  Book: In Search of the Wild Tofurky by Seth TibbottSupport this podcast:Hope for the Animals PodcastCompassionate Living

It's not often that a high-profile investment deal is announced just before a major holiday, but we got lucky this week. After discussing the news that Kim Kardashian's private equity firm SKYY Partners has invested in upscale condiment brand TRUFF, the hosts munched on a new brand of cookies launched by popular Twitch streamer Pokimane and dove into a growing pool of caffeine-free energy drinks. Show notes: 0:35: For Future Reference… Congrats, Nicks (& Kim). Skillet Sweet. They also spoke at length about a new brand of cookies (and somehow avoided the controversy surrounding it), praised a new Straightaway SKU and hailed Jacqui's attempts to minimize coffee consumption. Miyoko, Now and ZenMarvelous Miyoko has been let go from the beloved vegan cheese company she founded and her many vegan fans are shocked and saddened. As this unfortunate situation unfolds we hope for the best for Miyoko and her delicious creations. Caryn Hartglass presents three excerpts of IT'S ALL ABOUT FOOD interviews with Miyoko from 2012, 2014, and 2016 showing the evolution of what is today, Miyoko's Creamery. During the 1990s, she taught vegan cooking classes, and in 1991 The Book Publishing Company published her first vegan cookbook The Now and Zen Epicure. In 1994, she opened the vegan restaurant Now and Zen in San Francisco, which eventually expanded into a natural food company of the same name, which was sold in 2003. Schinner has launched a number of vegan brands, such as UnTurkey, which she exhibited at the 1995 Natural Products Expo alongside competitor Tofurky, and Hip Whip. In 2014, Schinner launched vegan cheese company Miyoko's Kitchen, later renaming it Miyoko's Creamery. Tofurky founder Seth Tibbott was the company's first investor. In 2016, the Specialty Food Association reported the company had “grown 300% year over year,” and “they recently signed on to a new 28,000+ square-foot headquarters in Petaluma.” Miyoko has authored these cookbooks: The Now and Zen Epicure, Book Publishing Company, June 1, 1991 (as Miyoko Nishimoto) Japanese Cooking: Contemporary & Traditional [Simple, Delicious, and Vegan], Book Publishing Company, Aug 19, 1999 (as Miyoko Nishimoto Schinner) The New Now and Zen Epicure, Book Publishing Company, September 1, 2001 (as Miyoko Nishimoto Schinner) Artisan Vegan Cheese, Book Publishing Company, Aug. 8, 2012 (as Miyoko Schinner) The Homemade Vegan Pantry: The Art of Making Your Own Staples, Ten Speed Press, June 16, 2015 (as Miyoko Schinner) The Vegan Meat Cookbook: Meatless Favorites. Seth Tibbott may be the only founder in the world who grew his business while living in a barn, a teepee, and a treehouse. His off-the-grid lifestyle helped him save money as he started to sell tempeh, a protein made of fermented soybeans. Throughout the 1980s he barely scraped by, but things took a turn in 1995, when he discovered a stuffed tofu roast made in Portland, Oregon. Knowing vegetarians had few options at Thanksgiving, Seth named the roast Tofurky and started selling it at co-ops in the Pacific Northwest. Nearly 25 years later, Tofurky sells plant-based protein around the world, and has estimated sales of $40 million a year. This show was recorded live at Revolution Hall in Portland, Oregon.

Nathan Echols about his Fatherhood journey having 5 kids ranging from 30 years old to 8 years old! We also talk about his vegan business and how being a vegan has changed his life. Thanks for listening! Be sure to leave a review ....your feedback is much appreciated! What Is Seitan? Seitan is the base for many commercially available vegetarian products such as Tofurky deli slices, meatless frankfurters, fakin' bacon, and others. You can generally find it in a variety of styles, such as ground, in slices, or in strips. Seitan can be prepared by hand using either whole wheat flour (which is a very labor-intensive process) or vital wheat gluten (which is a much simpler process). It is made by rinsing away the starch in the wheat dough, leaving just the high-protein gluten behind. In this episode I'm sharing a recording of a panel discussion I hosted last year at the 2018 Adelaide Vegan Festival in Australia, called the Future of Plant Based Business. My guests on the panel were Seth Tibbott, founder of iconic American vegan meat brand Tofurky which is sold internationally, and Cale Drouin, a plant-based consultant in Brisbane, Australia who works with food retailers and distributors. Among the topics we discussed are: • What's driving the take-up of vegan/plant-based living • What plant-based products are currently ‘hot' right now • What to be aware of when dealing with large supermarket chains • Strategies for getting your products into retailers • How will ‘clean' meat compete against plant-based meat? • Pushback from animal agriculture industries in banning terms like ‘meat' and ‘milk' on products unless they come from animals • What's happening in non-food-related vegan business sectors and the opportunities this provides • And more You can also watch a video of this discussion here: RESOURCES: My Online PR Course for Vegan Business Owners & Entrepreneurs: Vegans in the Limelight My book Vegan Ventures: Start and Grow an Ethical Business Follow Vegan Business Media on: Facebook   Twitter  Instagram  Connect with me personally at: Facebook  Twitter  LinkedIn

So, this is a special episode of Vegan Business Talk, as it's episode number 100! I've interviewed 100 brilliant vegan business owners for the show who have been so kind and generous in sharing their challenges and how they overcame them, along with providing practical strategies for success. I love how this community of entrepreneurs on a shared vision are willing to share their intel and tips to help other vegan business owners to succeed. I know I learn heaps from every single person I interview and I'm so grateful to everyone who contacts me personally or posts on social media to let me know how much they enjoy the podcast and how much they learn. So a big thank you to all my interviewees for making the show a success and of course to you, the audience, for listening to and sharing the episodes. So for this episode, I talk about 5 key lessons for vegan business owners that have come out of the 100 episodes and you can find links to the ones mentioned below. Lesson 1: Everyone does it tough. Starting a business is a huge undertaking which challenges you on every level: physical, emotional, spiritual. Remember that most people only share the highlights of their life and business success on social media. Episodes mentioned: Jeremy Johnson, Vegan Perfection (12) Joy Pierson & Bart Potenza, Candle Café (10) Lesson 2: Resilience is the number one personal quality of successful business owners. Sticking it out, even when the going gets tough is essential. Episodes mentioned: Rebecca Mink, Mink Shoes (99) Renia Prutchnicki, Truth Belts (22) Seth Tibbott, Tofurky (6) Lesson 3: Take time out from the business Take time to relax, spend with family and friends, meditate or do a hobby. Episodes mentioned: Lisa Gawthorne, Bravura Foods (95) Lesson 4: Everything costs more than you think it will. I hear this time and time again from entrepreneurs, who, even with the most detailed business plan, find that budgets tend to end up being anything from double to four or five times what you estimated them to be. So you need to be prepared for this and make sure you have some kind of backup or buffer and not rely solely on outside investment. Episodes mentioned: Kiki Adami, Veganizer (70) Sebastiano Cossia Castiglioni (7) Liz Dee (31) Jody Rasch (76) Lee Coates (83) Jonathan Petrides (98) David Benzaquen (29) The above episodes will give you a good idea of what investors look for, how to know you're ready for investment, how to pitch an investor, and much more. Lesson 5: Collaboration is essential. What I love about vegan entrepreneurs is their willingness to collaborate with each other and lift each other up so it's a win-win. Episodes mentioned: Naijha Wright-Brown and Gregory Brown, The Land of Kush (62) Jessica Bailey, The Cruelty Free Shop (39) Jonathan Petrides (98) Tammy Fry, Fry's Family Foods (85) Kathy Divine, author, publisher and mentor (90) I hope enjoy this episode and find the lessons helpful. I'm looking forward to bringing you more excellent interviews with wonderful vegan business owners, as well as some solo episodes from me with tips on raising the profile of your vegan business. In this episode, I interview Seth Tibbott, founder of Turtle Island Foods which produces the range of renowed Tofurky alternative meat products. This is another audio interview I did for my book Vegan Ventures: Start and Grow an Ethical Business. It was such a pleasure to interview Seth because he's run a vegan business for over 20 years and seen massive success. But it wasn't always like that – he had some tough times and it actually took him many years before his business turned a profit. And I think it's really good for us to hear about the challenges and struggles that successful vegan entrepreneurs had because sometimes we might be tempted to think they had it cushy all the way along. That's rarely the case and Seth's story certainly demonstrates that. In this interview Seth talks about: •    The innovative strategy he took with his living arrangements when he couldn't afford conventional rent •    How Tofurky took off and hit the big time when Seth stopped conforming to how he thought a ‘businessman' should look and act •    The importance of knowing when to ‘fire yourself' and delegate •    And much more Visit the Tofurky website.
