In 1936, Victor Hugo Green published the first edition of what he called The Negro Motorist Green Book, a 16-page listing of businesses in the New York metropolitan area that would welcome African American customers. By its final printing in 1966, the Green Book had gone international, with a 100-page book that included not just friendly businesses throughout the United States but also hotels and resorts that would be safe for African American travelers in Canada, the Caribbean, Latin America, Europe, and Africa, along with a list of currency exchange rates.  Joining me this week to help us learn more about why African American travelers needed the Green Book and how Victor Green and his family created such an important and long-lasting publication is award-winning television and radio broadcaster and financial educator Alvin Hall, author of the new book, Driving the Green Book: A Road Trip Through the Living History of Black Resistance.

The Green Book in Galveston | Rosenberg Avenue between Market St. & Post Office St.The Green book was created by a man named Victor Hugo Green, an African-American postal carrier from Harlem. The original Green book was published in 1936.During the era of racial segregation the green book was a valuable publication offering resources, contacts, and addresses, providing African-American travelers safe passage across the country. The guide contained a list of businesses in cities across the US that catered to African-American customers. Galveston was among the Texas cities which listed hotels, restaurants, gas stations, entertainment venues, and other safe spaces for African-American travelers. In this location there were three businesses the imperial Barber shop Mitchell's restaurant in the Oleander hotel, all of them listed in the Green Book.

Website: iloveblackpeople.com Washington, DC –I Love Black People (ILBP) is a Black tech startup that uses technology to build a global network to protect Black people from racism & xenophobia, especially while traveling and in new environments. ILBP provides safe places for Black people throughout the world by providing Black-owned and Black-friendly businesses. Our goal is to make sure that no matter where a Black person goes, they will be treated with dignity and respect. ILBP could not do what it does without the help of our worldwide network of people. Our people network is currently composed of 400 ambassadors and 40,000 members who have helped to promote and identify over 14,000 businesses throughout the world, spanning over 200 cities. With the launch of “The Global Green Book: A Black Survival Guide” comes an opportunity to globally build upon Victor Hugo Green’s attempts to highlight venues — Black-owned or otherwise — where Black people can receive various services and accommodations with dignity and respect when traveling. In the months since its inception, ILBP have been able to pinpoint Black-owned and Black-friendly places on nearly every continent. Recent recommendations include hotel accommodations in Kitwe, Zambia, and a healthcare provider in California. “Living while Black” has become a phenomenon that highlights the harsh reality that Black people endure when they venture beyond their own communities. Instead of basking in the freedom that comes with expanding one’s horizons, many Black travelers find that racism has no boundaries. “We won’t settle for just being accepted,” said Sinclair Skinner, founder of I Love Black People. “When we go somewhere, we should be treated amazingly. If we don’t set that standard, no one will set it for us.” “The Global Green Book and website is not about promoting businesses, but the love and humanity of Black people,” Skinner said. “The information is powerful but we have to unlock it within each and every one of us. We have to make sure this decade is the last time Black people were disrespected and didn’t know where to go.” About I Love Black People: I Love Black People is an international Black tech startup that uses technology to help protect Black people from racism & xenophobia.

To close out the Black Business month, we take a journey back in time. Did you know that long before Airbnb there was The Negro Motorist Green Book? First published in 1936, the Green Book was the innovation of a Harlem-based postal carrier named Victor Hugo Green. Because of the discrimination Black people faced whenever they ventured outside their neighborhoods, Black travelers often couldn’t find safe places to eat and sleep. Victor Hugo Green sought to solve this problem. By the early 1940s, the Green Book listed thousands of establishments from across the country, all of them either Black-owned or verified to be non-discriminatory. In this episode of Financial Fridays, hear how he expanded listings (the first edition only covered hotels and restaurants in the New York area) by leveraging information from fellow postal workers and offering cash payments to readers for useful information. Coach Colette draws parallels between Green's efforts in crowdsourcing and sponsorship with efforts made by current Black innovators and entrepreneurs to stimulate you to keep pursuing your dreams. Did you know that JOY is an act of RESISTANCE? Are you struggling to find your joy these days? In this week's Unplugged segment, you'll get some motivation as you hear an excerpt from the poem The Telly Cycle by the prolific author, Toi Derricotte. It contains a reference to the love between a Black woman and a fish named Telly. Learn more about the personal connection to this narrative for Coach Colette and her fish Stripe, particularly as she prepares to celebrate her birthday, remaining grateful for the years she's had on this Earth as a Black woman in America. Studies have shown that black students learn better in school environments where their cultural identities are reflected by the school’s curriculum, teachers and administrators. This week we talk about school culture and choices, with New York Times reporter Eliza Shapiro about her feature, ‘I Love My Skin!’ Why Black Parents Are Turning to Afrocentric Schools. Later in the show, we are joined by co-Directors David Y. Chack and Karen Edwards-Hunter, and actor Tyler Madden from “The Green Book,” which is currently running in Louisville. The play is inspired by Victor Hugo Green’s, “The Negro Motorist Green Book,” which from 1936-1967 helped African Americans traveling in automobiles across the United States find helpful services and places that were friendly to blacks travelers.
