In this episode of Monday Night Therapy, host Minnie Hunt is joined by Pigskin PD (Peter Bartell) and law professor Adam Lamparello for an in-depth look at the NCAA House Settlement and its massive impact on the future of college football. The panel breaks down how the new system allows universities to pay up to $20.5 million annually to athletes, alongside NIL deals, and explores the legal, competitive, and Title IX ramifications. Adam explains why this structure may further widen the gap between powerhouse programs and smaller schools—sparking antitrust concerns and long legal battles. The conversation also dives into Nebraska football's identity, the importance of returning to its physical, trench-dominant style, and head coach Matt Rhule's efforts to rebuild the program. The group reflects on Nebraska legends like Tommy Frazier and Lawrence Phillips while discussing NIL's broader impact on player movement, recruiting, and competitive balance across college football. If you're passionate about Nebraska football history, college football NIL, or the changing landscape of the sport, this is an essential discussion. Plus, hear some fun memories about the 1869 Rutgers-Princeton game and Nebraska's storied quarterback legacy. #NebraskaFootball #CollegeFootballHistory #NIL #NCAASettlement #GoBigRed

In this episode, Lawrence Phillips, an endocrinologist at Emory Clinic, a professor at Emory University School of Medicine, and medical director of the Clinical Studies Center at the Atlanta VA Medical Center, discusses pushing through lung cancer to continue doing what he loves—seeing patients, teaching, and conducting research. Something odd turned up in one of Phillips's routine health screenings in 2008. A radiologist who was examining Phillips's CT scan images to look at his coronary arteries noticed a mass in his left lung. Phillips had previously been told not to worry about the mass because it wasn't growing. “Well, that's not true,” Phillips recalled the radiologist saying. The tumor had, indeed, grown. Three days later, Phillips had it removed via segmentectomy. He thought his lung cancer was over and done with. But in 2014, his surgery scar had started to change. It lit up in a PET scan. So, Phillips had a lobectomy, after which he learned he had an EGFR mutation. Eventually, Phillips began a treatment regimen gefitinib, which he still takes today. He is currently free of evidence of disease. Phillips spoke with Deborah Doroshow, associate professor of medicine at the Tisch Cancer Institute, Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai. A transcript of this conversation is available on the Cancer History Project.

Paul Koch joined Todd and I for a guest episode of Monday Night Therapy. Paul was a member of the Nebraska strength and conditioning staff from 1987-1996. He is the author of “No Place Like Nebraska - Anatomy Of An Era” which I profiled in a video recently. Paul talked about what it was like being a member of the staff during the greatest run of Nebraska football. He relates what strength and conditioning can do for a team, how it got started at Nebraska, Getting players motivated to do their workouts was a difficult task, even when they knew it would ultimately benefit them. It was a special group of coaches and players that made the greatness of the 90s come about and Paul was there to tell us about it. He also talked about his relationship with Lawrence Phillips, as he was one of the few people who stayed in touch with Phillips after his incarceration. Learn more about your ad choices. Welcome back to the Bill Bradley Collective, where this week in the last of our season-wide profiles through the lens of criminal justice we discuss the life and times and crimes of Lawrence Phillips. Phillips' story is not one for the faint of heart, but one that incapsulates everything this Collective attempts to capture from a sporting, moral, judicial and human perspective. Phillips is best remembered as a prodigious yet highly-troubled collegiate running back at the University of Nebraska and a controversial early first round pick of the then-St. Louis Rams, but the narrative of this man goes far deeper. Join us for a chronological narrative of a simultaneous football phenom and serial criminal. From an adolescence marked by abuse and neglect at the hands of parents and the foster-care system both, to being allegedly “saved” by the so-called constructs of football and almost endless opportunities at salvation granted by coaching greats the likes of Osbourne, Vermeil and others, and to when said chances run dry and incarceration for violent crimes becomes inevitable, the Collective does their best to cover every angle of Phillips' life. Lawrence Phillips as victim of a broken foster care system, a compromised collegiate and pro football infrastructure and a victim of racial criminal justice inequity: yes. But with serious consideration given to the undue justice given his many victims, namely one Kate EcEwen, and for others whom seem grossly neglected and almost forgotten, we also attempt to bring light to, this week on the Bill Bradley Collective.
We open with our usual Fails, including Aaron Rodgers endorsements, a naked man in a wall, and Michigan's Attorney General getting drunk at a tailgate. We also discuss the career of Lawrence Phillips, who could not stay out of legal troubles. In the sports recap, we talk about the week in college football, San Diego St. punter Matt Ariaza, and which teams we want to see get into the playoffs. In the NFL, the Patriots are back to crushing everybody, the Titans continue to win without Derrick Henry, and a couple of teams who we aren't too sure where they stand. For losers this week we have a Jon Gruden lawsuit, the Manningcast curse, and John Wall potentially being paid to miss a season for no reason. We end with our interview with college football player turned comedian Mikey McDonald. https://twitter.com/mikeymcdonald55?s=21. Wow! Even without a game last week we find ourselves with plenty to talk about. Maurice Washington fills up a lot of our conversation this week as he is no longer practicing with the team and his future with the program is very much in doubt. Fans love to remember the 90’s, and with Scott Frost, they are hoping for a return of the good old days. Well, is history starting to repeat itself? In this case, we are not referring to winning, but rather, players who make poor decisions put the program’s reputation in jeopardy and still get second and third chances. This approach is a slippery slope for Frost, and the way he deals with Washington is something he can’t take lightly. Dr. Rob Zatechka says it best in this edition of the Doc Talk Podcast presented by the Rimington Trophy; coaches hate drama! Washington has provided plenty of it this season, so what’s next? Only time will tell, but Frost indicated that if his sophomore runningback does return to the team, it will not be anytime soon. So on this episode, we spend some time talking about Washington, Lawrence Phillips, culture, and the balance that coaches have to take when it comes to mentoring student-athletes. Oh, and what about Indiana? Nebraska does have a game this week as they take on the Hoosiers. Indiana can score points, but it gives up a lot as well. In addition to the game talk, Dr. Rob and Travis take a lot of listener emails. Well, the Scott Frost era isn't off to the start we thought it would be. Adrian Martinez is hurt. Andrew Bunch is like Matt Turman but without Lawrence Phillips, Aaron Taylor and Chris Dishman. And we've lost to friggin' Colorado and Troy. But Colorado and Iowa fans should relish this while they can because this is just the dark before the dawn So give a listen to our darkness this week because there's a lot of it. Serena is having a baby in the fall. Mazel Tov. Aaron Hernandez dead at 27. Westbrook gets 51 and a triple double tonight but Harden and Rockets get win and go up 2-0 in series.

Should Husker fans accept (or encourage) cheating? Should Nebraska fans be happy achieving moderate success without breaking the rules? Mike Riley, Tim Miles, Tom Osborne, Frank Solich, Lawrence Phillips, Nick Saban, Mark Dantonio, Joseph Lewis, Bo Pelini, Jim Tressel, Minnesota football, the SEC and steroids are all on the table this week. On this week's episode, Peter King talks to Packers head coach Mike McCarthy, and 60 Minutes Sports correspondent Armen Keteyian. Mike McCarthy talks about how he kept his team together after a four game losing streak, his working relationship with Aaron Rodgers, and surviving in Green Bay longer than Vince Lombardi. Keteyian explains why people should watch a documentary about a football player from two decades ago, why Lawrence Phillips is relevant today, and what advice he would give to Goodell and the NFL about how to reduce cases of domestic violence. Keteyian covered the Patriots often during his eight years as a CBS sideline reporter and he explains why Bill Belichick stands alone in his mind among NFL coaches.
Jonathan Jones calls in to the show to discuss the Carolina Panthers and the rest of the NFL Divisional Round Playoffs. Jones covers the Panthers for the Charlotte Observer. Bill and Jamal then talk about the relocation of the Rams and the death of Lawrence Phillips.

Lawrence Phillips was a phenomenal football talent, a back-to-back National Champion at the University of Nebraska and a top NFL draft pick in 1996. But a childhood marred by trauma and violence undercut Phillips’ promise of a fruitful life. Despite his obvious athletic gifts, a pattern of disturbing off-field behavior pushed Phillips out of the league and into legal trouble. In 2008, Lawrence Phillips entered Kern Valley State Prison. He would never get to see the outside again. In January of 2015, while awaiting trial for the alleged murder of his cell-mate, Phillips was found dead in his cell - a suspected suicide. Today, Dave Zirin seeks clarity and lessons from the tragic life of Lawrence Phillips. Our guests are Damon Benning, a Cornhusker teammate of Phillips and a current radio host in Lincoln, Howard University Professor Christian-Dotson Pierson, and Neil Irvin, Executive Director of ‘Men Can Stop Rape.’Zirin article: “Who Killed Lawrence Phillips?” http://www.thenation.com/article/who-killed-lawrence-phillips/Edge of Sports homepage http://edgeofsportspodcast.comhttp://twitter.com/edgeofsports | http://fb.com/edgeofsports | email edgeofsports@slate.com Damon Benning twitter http://twitter.com/damonbenningMen Can Stop Rape http://mencanstoprape.org | Neil Irvin twitter http://twitter.com/mcsr_nirvinChristian Dotson-Pierson twitter http://twitter.com/profcdpMusic: Hide & Seek by WTCHCRFT http://soundcloud.com/wtchcrft2 | Blankets by Swell http://soundcloud.com/swll | 808s and birthday cake by Tim Legend http://soundcloud.com/timlegend
