Green Book is #133 on IMDB's Top 250 Movies as of April 2024 (the number may differ based on when you listen). In this episode, we discuss the heartwarming movie led by the exceptional performances of Viggo Mortensen as Tony Lip and Mahershala Ali as Dr. Don Shirley. We also asked the question of if this movie's use of humor to address serious issues was the right call and so much more!

Pianist and composer BLKBOK, (pronounced “Black Bach”) has played with some of the biggest pop names: Rihanna, Justin Timberlake, Demi Lovato, and John Mayer. Born Charles Wilson III, he grew up in Detroit with a traditional classical foundation and pursued more musical interests including jazz, Motown, hip-hop and the blues. While he's not conservatory-trained, he creates by channeling his thoughts and reflections, and running them through his fingers onto the piano, creating musical poems in the process. Despite the absence of touring during the pandemic, it was a productive time for BLKBOK, who finalized the instrumental compositions that would become Black Book, a continuation of the legacy of (and inspired by) the movie Green Book, which told the story of trailblazing black classical pianist/composer Don Shirley. BLKBOK plays some of these works remotely for the Soundcheck Podcast. Composer and pianist BLKBOK joins me to talk about his spark, the film Green Book.BLKBOK is a neo-classical musician and there are many parallels between his career and that of Dr. Don Shirley, the subject of Green Book. We tackle lots of questions surrounding the intersection between music and the racist history of America: How does the traditional classical music establishment treat Black musicians? Can all forms of music cut across racial and socioeconomic barriers? Can classical music reach younger, more diverse audiences?Links:BLKBOKGreen Book
We had the pleasure of interviewing BLKBOK over Zoom video.Neoclassical pianist and Detroit native BLKBOK is set to soundtrack this year's Juneteenth celebrations with the deluxe version of his debut album 'Black Book'. Arriving on June 17 via icons+giants, ‘Black Book DLUX' is a timely natural continuation of BLKBOK's critically-acclaimed debut as a composer, reflecting on pertinent social issues, with counterpoints, and sustaining a dialogue through his thought-provoking pieces. The package includes 11 new interstitial poems woven throughout the album, written and narrated by award-winning Jamaican poet Lauren Delapenha. Additionally, it features two new powerful singles “Kendrick + Karine” and “Forgotten Girls.”While touring the world as a pianist or musical director with the likes of Rihanna, Justin Timberlake, Demi Lovato, Timbaland and John Mayer, BLKBOK spent his private time composing his own original material, music that was inspired by his love of hip-hop and classical music. When the pandemic set in and touring came to a halt, he finalized these compositions which led to getting signed by icons+giants/WMG and releasing his first body of solo work, last year's ‘Black Book.' BLKBOK was inspired to create ‘Black Book' as a tribute to the movie ‘Green Book' and the courageous story of pianist/composer Don Shirley, whose trailblazing spirit helped open the door for black classical pianists of which there remains too few. The largely instrumental album features a standout vocal collaboration with Hamilton's Tony and Grammy Award-winning Renée Elise Goldsberry on “My Life.” Provocative singles like “George Floyd and the Struggle for Equality,” “November 7th 2020” and “Michelle's First Day At The White House” offer listeners unique perspectives of the social climate that we live in, and an opportunity to hear BLKBOK's reflections of the world through the keys of the piano.Since releasing his debut album, BLKBOK has taken to social media weekly, while developing new work in real-time and challenging the way we listen to classical music. A 21st century black pianist equally infatuated with rappers like Busta Rhymes and The Notorious B.I.G., as well as the classical greats like Debussy, Mozart, and Bach, BLKBOK has gone viral on TikTok with his riveting neoclassical TikTok covers of Cardi B and Kendrick Lamar. On Instagram, he hosts a monthly “What's Goin' On” social series, where he develops new songs related to current cultural milestones and events, and offers an open forum for fans to share their feelings and discuss social issues. We want to hear from you!

On this episode, we discuss the ninety-first Best Picture Winner: “GREEN BOOK”"Green Book" is a biographical comedy-drama written by Peter Farrelly, Brian Hayes Currie and Frank "Tony Lip" Vallelonga's son, Nick Vallelonga, based on interviews with his father and Shirley, as well as letters his father wrote to his mother. Dr. Don Shirley is a world-class African-American pianist, who is about to embark on a concert tour in the Deep South in 1962. This week, your favourite gingers of ALL TIME, go on a journey through time and space as we head back to the 1960's and the southern part of the United States. We join Tony Lip and Don Shirley in the Oscar Winning Film: Green Book.
Green Book places a working class Italian- American (Tony Vallelonga, commonly known as Tony 'Lip') with an African-American classical pianist (Dr. Don Shirley) on a tour of venues as employer and employee. The lines blur as they spend more and more time with each other, opening up a fragile friendship that indulges the audience into a feel good comedy/drama. What it doesn't do, is get its facts straight. Within this episode, this analysis is more about revealing and exploring the history behind the Green Book and the characters themselves, rather than an analysis of the film on its own. And so we begin.

New York City bouncer Frank "Tony Lip" Vallelonga is searching for new employment while the Copacabana nightclub, where he works, is closed for renovations. He is invited to an interview with Doctor Don Shirley, an eccentric African American pianist who is looking for a driver for his eight-week concert tour through the Midwest and Deep South. Don hires Tony on the strength of his references and with the agreement of Tony's wife, Dolores. They depart with plans to return to New York on Christmas Eve. Don's record label representatives give Tony a copy of the "Green Book," a guide for African-American travelers to find motels, restaurants, and filling stations that would serve them. ~ In Love, Rev. Today on Voices From the Frontlines, Eric deconstructs the film, Green Book, and offered us an alternative to the racist narrative portrayed in the film. Eric details the falsehoods told in this film that do nothing more than reinforce the racist lens through which the film makers views Shirley - and probably black people in general - while making every attempt to omit the genius and virtuoso that Don Shirley was. Eric talks about the anger that Don's family, as well as the black community, expressed after seeing this film. Eric's alternative narrative is refreshing, and revolutionary. If only the filmmaker had the same vision... Eric also speaks to Fran Durrell, a fantastic peace activist, about the passing of KPFK's and the greater social justice world's dear friend, peace activist Blase Bonpane. Blase transitioned to the other side of life this past Monday, April 8th. While he will be missed, his legacy will love on through us! We must now carry the torch. The controversial 2018 film "Green Book" that just won the Academy Award for Best Picture has it all: a white-savior narrative, cheesy New York Italian-American accents, and a series of cringeworthy tone-deaf scenes that aim to solve racism, but end up being more racist themselves in the end. Farrelly brother Peter directed this unfunny Oscar-bait that apparently either warmed the hearts of all the old white Academy members or was just the perfect anti-Netflix movie to pick so "Roma" wouldn't win. Often compared to "Driving Miss Daisy," it's actually more like "The Bodyguard," "The Odd Couple" and "Planes, Trains and Automobiles." Very not-Italian-looking Viggo Mortensen plays Frank "Tony Lip" Vallelonga, an almost-illiterate, mobbed-up thug who uses violence to solve all of his problems. This movie paints him as a loving family man who will do anything to support them, when in reality he's an awful racist grifter who would never change his attitudes on a dime just because he hung out with one black person for a few weeks. Mahershala Ali plays Dr. Don Shirley (in a role he won an Best Supporting Actor Oscar for), a lonely genius pianist who hires Tony Lip as his bodyguard/driver so he doesn't get messed with while on tour in the 1962 Jim Crow American South. Though every time Tony saves him from trouble, he flips out like a baby for no reason. Linda Cardellini plays Dolores Vallelonga, the doting wife stock character who seems to be the only non-racist member of her entire family. There’s even supporting characters played by cheesy standup comedian Sebastian Maniscalco and the guy who played Donna's dad on "That '70s Show." Join us as we wonder how many times Nick Vallelonga (the main character’s real-life son) watched "GoodFellas" while writing this movie, as we make fun of Steven Spielberg's recent anti-streaming services comments, as we talk about how Paul Walker doesn't get enough grief for dating a 15 year old, and as we wonder if Mahershala Ali is secretly embarrassed this movie won him a second Oscar. @caracoldepeli

This week on The First Run, Matt and Chris discuss ‘Green Book'. Based on the true story of the friendship of musician Dr. Don Shirley and Bronx native and nightclub bouncer Tony Lip as the Lip drives Shirley through the deep South on a concert tour during the 1960's. Though the film screams Oscar bait, is it able to shed the derogatory connotations of the term? Then it's the return of the Coen Brothers with the Netflix Western anthology, the Ballad of Buster Scruggs, featuring 6 different stories of life and adventure in the old West. Anthology films can be notoriously uneven. So how does one created by the Coens shake out?
Kriss, Brandon and Ro discuss Green Book and the controversy surrounding it. Is it a white savior film? Does it water down racism? We think Green Book is definitely a film audiences should check out. It's not a perfect film and probably would be better (or at least delve more into Dr. Don Shirley's personal life) if it had a black director. But it's definitely not a comedy and it doesn't make the racism of the 60's easier to swallow. https://oembed.libsyn.com/embed?item_id=7664117 A working-class Italian-American bouncer becomes the driver of an African-American classical pianist on a tour of venues through the 1960s American South. This week we chat about one of the most expertly acted films of the year, the moving story of an unlikely friendship between Dr. Don Shirley, an accomplished classical piano player, and Tony Lip, an Italian bouncer who is enlisted to drive Shirley on a concert tour through the racially divided deep south. Though it may be easy to predict, the film is based on real-life events and the relationship between Shirley and Lip. Green Book has seen rave critical and audience response, but is not without its critics. We try to navigate the complicated material it covers in this latest conversation about a film that definitely makes us feel.
