Reminder 1. The point of self care is to care for yourself, not add unnecessary shame or heighten the stakes. Reminder 2: You can't optimize yourself out of experiencing all pain and discomfort.Reminder 3: There is no one size fits all fix to any problem.REMINDER 4: Sometimes, if we're really lucky - we will find things that can help offer guideposts through a very tricky existence. ACTION ITEM: read, listen, watch, and pay real close attention to the things that make you feel lucky to enough to see. ACTION ITEM: Compile a list of those anything that helps you feel seen or heard or validated. Bonus: Share it with others who you think may feel “seen” by it, too. KEY LESSON: What's cool about this exploration is that, when you're always on the lookout for your humanity in others, you'll start to see it in everything and everyone. Until then, just let yourself enjoy the process of exploration.Donate to Palestinian Children's Relief Fund::www.pcrf.netDonate to Mutual Aid Funds: https://www.folxhealth.com/library/mutual-aid-fundsGET AN OCCASIONAL PERSONAL EMAIL FROM ME: www.makeyourdamnbedpodcast.comTUNE IN ON INSTAGRAM FOR COOL CONTENT: www.instagram.com/mydbpodcastOR BE A REAL GEM + TUNE IN ON PATREON: www.patreon.com/MYDBpodcastOR WATCH ON YOUTUBE: www.youtube.com/juliemerica The opinions expressed by Julie Merica and Make Your Damn Bed Podcast are intended for entertainment purposes only. THE PROBLEM WITH SELF CARE + HOW TO DEAL WITH ITPROBLEM 1: NO SIMPLE DEFINITION But because being a human includes incredibly diverse experiences, and inherently dealing with messy and complicated things, we can safely assume that caring for yourself is bound to be a little messy and complicated, too. PROBLEM 2: CAPITALISM: People are constantly trying to bottle and sell you something that isn't bottlable or sellable, so it will take some discretion and emotional literacy in being able to decipher what self care is actually worth a damn. PROBLEM 3: People treat self care like a goal, rather than a practice. Self care is not optional, but it is a practice you can improve upon. The challenge is, effective self care is an ongoing, ever changing practice of discovery and self soothing and accountability and challenge. The main problem I have with “self care” is there's no simple or universal definition for it.KEY LESSON: The key to effective self care is KNOWING WHAT YOU REALLY NEED (underlying wants, impulses, and emotions) AND UNDERSTANDING THE BEST WAY TO GIVE THOSE UNDERLYING NEEDS ATTENTION.Donate to Palestinian Children's Relief Fund::www.pcrf.netDonate to Mutual Aid Funds: https://www.folxhealth.com/library/mutual-aid-fundsGET AN OCCASIONAL PERSONAL EMAIL FROM ME: www.makeyourdamnbedpodcast.comTUNE IN ON INSTAGRAM FOR COOL CONTENT: www.instagram.com/mydbpodcastOR BE A REAL GEM + TUNE IN ON PATREON: www.patreon.com/MYDBpodcastOR WATCH ON YOUTUBE: www.youtube.com/juliemerica The opinions expressed by Julie Merica and Make Your Damn Bed Podcast are intended for entertainment purposes only. Sometimes the goal we set for ourselves does not fully match God's goal for us. Here's a surprising example of this: when we make freedom from sexual sin our highest goal. In today's show, we'll talk about why God's goal for our lives is much deeper and more wonderful than that, and why pursuing His goal for our lives is a “Key Lesson on the Road to Freedom.” Resources we mentioned: Living in Victory Through the Power of Mercy (Book) By Steve Gallagher

Chris Garvey: A Tale of Two Agile Teams, A Key Lesson on The Impact of Leadership on Team Self-organization In this episode, Chris shares a pivotal experience managing two teams as a Scrum Master. While one team was granted time to embark on their own agile journey, the other team faced time constraints. Despite having the same coach, manager, and product owner, the teams significantly diverged. A key insight emerged when one tech lead allowed the team space for self-organization, while the other did not. This distinction played a crucial role in team performance. Chris emphasizes the importance of providing support for teams to take ownership and grow, as it doesn't happen naturally without guidance. Featured Book of the Week: The Power of Now: A Guide to Spiritual Enlightenment by Eckhart Tolle Chris delves into the profound impact of The Power Of Now By Eckhart Tolle on his Scrum Master journey, emphasizing its focus on presence and challenging thought patterns. He highlights the gift of being fully present as a coach, offering a unique perspective on trust and conditioning in our thinking processes. The book's influence lies in its ability to open minds to diverse thinking, ultimately shaping Chris's approach as a Scrum Master. [IMAGE HERE] Do you wish you had decades of experience? Pain is the most valuable currency you can have in your business. The more pain you go through, the more successful you are likely to be. The number one mistake that people make when it comes to trying to succeed is that they are constantly trying to avoid pain. By trying to avoid pain, you are neglecting the one thing that is going to help you grow. I've come to the realization in recent years that those who win big have learnt to sit in pain, rather than avoid it altogether. They simply endure whatever suffering they are going through & power through it. Many people just run away altogether & that is why they don't have the life that they have. Those that do have everything that they want understand that enduring pain is the normal price to pay & there's no way of running away from the fee. In this podcast, I'm going to be talking about pain in a lot more detail & explaining how important it is to your success as a business owner.I hope you find it helpful. NCAA transfer portal star Grant Nelson chose to join Nate Oats and the Alabama Crimson Tide over Eric Musselman and Arkansas, helping to replace the losses of Charles Bediako and Noah Clowney in Bama's frontcourt. Nelson's floor spacing and rim protection will be tested in the SEC, but if he's up for the task he'll make a fantastic addition to Oats' team. Meanwhile, Muss and the Hogs will likely turn their attention to Jordan Brown, a big man transfer from Louisiana who Muss coached at Nevada back in 2018-19. Simeon Wilcher decommitted from North Carolina and quickly found a new home at St. John's, where he's the 12th newcomer for coach Rick Pitino and his highest rated recruit this cycle. What Wilcher's playing time looks like for the Johnnies remains to be seen, but it's clear Pitino is ready to build this program from the ground up. Finally, Arizona and tommy Lloyd put together a staggering non-conference schedule that includes Purdue in Indiana, Duke at Cameron Indoor, as well as neutral site battles with Tom Izzo and Michigan State and the aforementioned Alabama team. I know the conservative white supremacists in the Tennessee State Legislature thought they were teaching these two young Black men a lesson, but the truth is that the bravery of these two young brothers taught the entire world a lesson. When used in the right place, at the right time, non-violent civil disobedience functions as both a mirror and spotlight on the bigotry of this country - showing the nation just how racist it truly is. In 1936, Victor Hugo Green published the first edition of what he called The Negro Motorist Green Book, a 16-page listing of businesses in the New York metropolitan area that would welcome African American customers. By its final printing in 1966, the Green Book had gone international, with a 100-page book that included not just friendly businesses throughout the United States but also hotels and resorts that would be safe for African American travelers in Canada, the Caribbean, Latin America, Europe, and Africa, along with a list of currency exchange rates. Joining me this week to help us learn more about why African American travelers needed the Green Book and how Victor Green and his family created such an important and long-lasting publication is award-winning television and radio broadcaster and financial educator Alvin Hall, author of the new book, Driving the Green Book: A Road Trip Through the Living History of Black Resistance.
