People have gotten crafty when it comes to staying connected during this time of social distancing. Zoom calls with family and friends, Animal Crossing weddings, and drive-through birthday parties are just a few of the ways we’re showing up for the people we care about. HER, a dating and social app for LGBTQ+ womxn and queer people, is also doing its part to foster safe socializing for its community. That said, you might say this comes as first nature to HER, because safety has always been a must when it comes to representing and providing a space for their members. In this episode of Community Signal, HER’s head of community, Shana Sumers, discusses the recent changes that have been made to help community members stay connected during the pandemic. She also shares some of the tools and policies that keep members of HER safe from scams and persecution because of their sexual identity or gender orientation. Patrick and Shana also discuss: How community moderators make a difference on HER Reasons why members find value in HER even after finding a partner through the community Delivering a premium and safe experience on HER without forcing everyone to pay a premium Why the 40+ community is Shana’s favorite on the app Our Podcast is Made Possible By… If you enjoy our show, please know that it’s only possible with the generous support of our sponsor: Discourse. Big Quotes When you happen upon a scammer meeting (12:47): “It’s almost like [scammers] have a room where they have figured it all out. … We’ve even caught some of our scammers having conversations with each other when they figure out there’s code words that they have. It’s just a whole mastermind process.” –@shanahasatwitr Ensuring the safety of HER’s LGBTQ+ community (18:44): “We’re available in [about] 113 countries worldwide, but we [also pay attention to] where it’s still illegal to be an out LGBTQ+ person and where people get highly prosecuted. … We wanted to be sure that the app was available in places that it was safe. If you were comfortable enough to come onto the app and show your face, that that’s because you were in an area where you can, and if you didn’t, that you have the option to be able to with our incognito mode.” –@shanahasatwitr Why building your brand and profile on HER could lead to more dates (26:35): “[We saw adding posts to your profile] as a way to hold people accountable, [but it’s also] a way for you to build your brand and make yourself seem more appealing to the community, which would then lead to more likes, more messages, and hopefully more dates.” –@shanahasatwitr Fostering inclusivity for the HER community (36:27): “Our community is so intersectional that we want to be able to find ways that everybody can feel represented. Even though we do have a big group of people who identify as lesbian or bisexual, it’s not far off to have people who are identifying as non-binary and we want to be sure that all of those are represented, all of those fit, and thankfully, the profiles give us a lot of data in that area so we can continue to adjust and make sure that people are seeing things that make them feel like they are part of the community.” –@shanahasatwitr About Shana Sumers Shana Sumers is a black, queer womxn, who is the head of community for HER App, the largest social and dating app for LGBTQ+ womxn and queer people. With a community of over five million users worldwide, Shana has worked from the ground up to launch and grow a community that supports the wants and needs for this rainbow-filled group. Today's guest is the star of Surfer Magazine's "Ultra Core Surf Hour" with Jon Wayne Freeman. Jon is a surfer, a father, a husband and a paramedic. Jon has just turned 40 and is blazing a new trail in life, foraging ahead in the vast unknown space, in an up and coming (Rebranded) genera known to the masses as "Surf Comedy". Yes, surfers have always had a sense of humor. They are natural joksters and pranksters...doing comedy skits as far back as the Endless Summer. Comedy has come a long way. The time before the Internet was a tuff place for an emerging artist with talent. You needed to be at the right place at the right time. You needed headshots, an agent and an agency to support your work. And thats all to get you 5 minutes on the "Tonight Show". Then came "Saturday Night Live"! This was a new emerging platform for Comedians and Sketch Groups to perform. With the success of "SNL", comedy clubs opened up all over the United States giving talented artists more outlets and a place to hone their craft. These day's...Its much easier than that. The sky is the limit and the "Gate Keepers" are gone. With the power of the Internet, The Phone and Instagram, an emerging and talented artist can put in the work them selves, and distribute the work them selves...to the masses....and in Jon's own word's "Let the people decide". And the people have decided! They absolutely love Jonathan and want more! They, we, us...cant get enough! It seems Jon has hit the nail on the head. Jon is a 40 year old surfer dad trying to balance his addiction for surf and everything else that comes with being a frothing father. He has seamlessly merged surf and comedy in a way that strikes a cord with the surf community. Weather he's bragging about being a North San Diego "Mid- Length-er" or being hassled by his ripping surfer wife...Jon always keeps it light and fun. For silly giggles though out the day, you must fallow Jonathan Wayne Freeman on Instagram. We Met up in the parking lot in Oceanside Harbor on a glorious Southern California beach day. Please join me for my conversation with the very funny and talented...Mr. Jon Wayne Freeman.

Neymat Raboobee is a copy editor, blogger, podcaster, social media manager, and author. She talks about Life as a South African Muslim Woman wearing a Nikat. We Met in the Muslimah Bloggers Facebook Group and again on Twitter. We also have a mini chat about the holy month of Ramadan. She shared about her experience traveling to various South African Cities like Port Elizabeth, Cape Town, Johannesburg and where she currently resides, in Durban. She talks about the easiest and difficult parts of writing, how to start writing, how she got started with writing, how writing helps her heal as well as Blogging. You can find her and her books at https://theimperfectmuslimah.com Click Here For the full transcript. For Youtube Video Version: https://youtu.be/UeEPDxWgfB0 Takeaways: “The most important thing that I can say is to feel confident enough to keep pitching. It's amazing if you've got the ability to get to a literary agent, pitch to them, and speak to them.” “90% of writing a novel is not that spark of creativity” “The niqab, which is what I'm wearing at the moment is something that is not required for Muslim women. So for me, it's that certain people choose to earn good deeds by giving extra charity or by, you know, doing extra physical worship, and I choose to do this.” “Just find a set of people who are doing the same sort of thing that you are perhaps in the same genre” “Ramadan is almost an escape from the rest of the year, it's so much more peaceful.” Subscribe: Libsyn: http://livinglegacypodcast.libsyn.com/ Spotify: https://spoti.fi/2TdAZ87 Google Play: http://bit.ly/2NzzSup Stitcher: https://www.stitcher.com/s?fid=378763&refid=stpr Apple Podcasts: apple.co/2NYapeh Support on Patreon: https://www.patreon.com/livinglegacy

Between hosting the successful We Met at Acme podcast about millennial dating, running the food Instagram @DontExpectSalads with over 85,000 followers and doing social media management and consulting with her company Lindsey’s Lunchbox she’s always on the go. I had the pleasure of sitting down with Lindsey on my last day in New York City (this is the final episode from the trip) and we go all the way back to start this one off to when Lindsey was in college and grew the Stoner Girl Problems Twitter to over 30,000 followers. She then found her way to GoButler where she got the company 60,000 followers by one sponsored post. Off the back of her success there she launched her own company. In our conversation we chat the success of her podcast, her tips for social media, dating in the world of social media and so much more. If you’re a fan of We Met at Acme this is a great way to get to know the host a little bit more. Speaking of learning about the host, Lindsey asked me all of the my own questions in the Q&A so you get to know me a bit better as well. “My exes have really hot exes. And I need them to be hot.”— today’s guest Lindsey Metselaar Lindsey, who also hosts her own fab podcast — We Met at Acme, a show about millennial dating in NYC, had a lot to say & strong opinions that kept me cracking up the entire time.Lindsey shares how she felt about herself growing up, being the ‘elephant in the room’ in high school and curly-hair shame. I ask her if she really eats everything posted on @dontexpectsalads and we talk about a misguided anorexia intervention from well-meaning friends (she does eat for the record). We discuss dating apps Hinge and Raya, how Lindsey gets ready for dates and how men don’t really understand how much make-up goes into the ‘no-make-up look’. We cover Brazilian waxes vs landing strips and why guys get away with having ‘full bushes’. Lindsey describes her ideal woman, why she prefers her exes to have hot exes, her thoughts on lip injections, thick eyebrows, nose jobs in the Jewish community and love for dry shampoo.******* Follow Lindsey https://www.instagram.com/lindzmetz/Follow We Met at Acme on IG: https://www.instagram.com/wemetatacme/Hear me discuss my dating years & the Rules on We Met at Acme: https://apple.co/2EJsaYyLearn more about her show: https://www.wemetatacme.comProducts Mentioned Glossier Tinted Moisturizer https://www.glossier.com/products/perfecting-skin-tintLaura Mercier Tinted Moisturizer https://www.sephora.com/product/tinted-moisturizer-P310930?country_switch=caSoft shirts from ATM for Lindsey’s go-to first date look https://atmcollection.comOribe Hair products https://www.oribe.comDry Shampoo from Dry Bar https://www.thedrybar.com/detox-dry-shampooBook She’s Loving - I Like You Just the Way I Am https://www.amazon.com/Like-You-Just-Way-Am/dp/1250055830Glam Squad to find a make-up artist https://www.glamsquad.com/Be sure to subscribe, rate and review the show: https://itunes.apple.com/us/podcast/the-naked-beauty-podcast/id1131628553?mt=2This episode was mixed by Laila OwedaKeep in touch: @brookedevardJoin the #nakedbeautypodcast community on Instagram: @nakedbeautyplanet See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.
