Send us a textEver had a lazy Sunday nap interrupted by the universe demanding you watch an 80s teen movie? That's exactly what happened when "Teen Witch" unexpectedly appeared on my screen after a Dallas marathon, triggering both nostalgic recognition and bewildered fascination. This delightfully corny 1989 film follows Louise Miller, a shy redhead who discovers her magical powers on her 16th birthday. What unfolds is a perfect time capsule of 80s teen movie absurdity – the unpopular girl transformation, the hunky jock who doesn't notice her until she's suddenly "that girl," and fashion choices that scream Reagan-era excess. From popped collars to fishnet stockings with kitten heels, Louise's magical makeover embodies everything wonderfully ridiculous about 80s aesthetics. The film's philosophical questions prove surprisingly thought-provoking beneath its cheesy exterior. Does Brad truly like Louise for herself or just her magically-enhanced popularity? Can changing your external circumstances actually change how others perceive you? And what makes the infamous "Top That" rap battle so gloriously, transcendently bad that it achieves a kind of perfection?"Teen Witch" delivers everything we simultaneously love and hate about 80s teen cinema – the earnest commitment to unrealistic scenarios, the blurry line between camp and sincerity, and the absolute conviction that a new outfit and the right accessories can transform your entire social existence. Whether you're revisiting this gem or discovering it for the first time, it's a magical journey through a time when teen movies weren't afraid to be completely, unapologetically ridiculous.Notice something familiar about this movie but can't place where you've seen it? You're not alone – like many cult classics from this era, "Teen Witch" found new life through cable TV reruns, possibly even on Disney Channel with some of the more passionate scenes carefully edited out.

Jane and James interview Dr. Sarah Louise Miller about her new book on the Avro Lancaster, The Lancaster Story. They discuss the significance of the Lancaster in RAF Bomber Command during World War II and its cultural impact. They also explore the personal stories and experiences of those involved with the Lancaster, including ground crew and WAAFs. Sarah shares her research process and the new perspectives she brings to the history of the Lancaster.  The team discuss some of the lesser-known life-saving missions of the Lancaster, such as the MANNA and EXODUS operations, which are often overshadowed by the aircraft's destructive capabilities. They also highlight the vital role of the WAAF in supporting the Royal Air Force (RAF) and challenge the narrative that women were merely support workers. The conversation touches on the importance of representing women's contributions in historical narratives and the need for more accurate and inclusive storytelling. The guests also discuss the challenges and emotional impact of researching and writing about these topics, and Sarah talks about her new project, telling the story of Hawaiian women in the aftermath of Pearl Harbor. KeywordsAvro Lancaster, RAF Bomber Command, World War II, cultural impact, personal stories, ground crew, WAAF, research process, new perspectives,  Women's Auxiliary Air Force, MANNA, EXODUS, , support workers, representation, historical narratives, challenges, emotional impactSend us a Text Message. The Family Histories PodcastJoin us and our guests as they reveal the fascinating lives of those in their family tree.Listen on: Apple Podcasts SpotifySupport the Show. Please subscribe to Never Mind The Dambusters wherever you get your podcasts. Hearts & Daggers

Summary: Pour yourself a mug of warm cider and snuggle under a blanket for this week's episode - we're hanging out in cabins in the woods! Is the wind outside a soothing background to a great makeout session or the cover for clomping feet coming to get us? One thing we're sure of - our hearts sure are racing whenever protagonists end up in rural cabins. Devin and Holly agree that while the outcomes of the stories in their respective wheelhouses differ, the allure is the same - isolated, cozy, and full of the unknown.  Topics Discussed: The Heart (2:31): Devin discussed The City Baker's Guide to Country Living by Louise Miller, a novel following Boston-based pastry chef Olivia Rawlings and she escapes a professional disaster by moving to a tiny Vermont town called Guthrie. Once there, she is hired to work at the Sugar Maple Inn by the owner, Margaret, who has her own apple-pie agenda, thrusting Livvy into a tiny community that makes a big impact on her life. Devin's key takeaways were: Livvy and the other characters in this novel all have their own ambitions, goals, and hang-ups. Some may seem silly on the surface (winning a pie baking contest) but are much more profound once you dig in. This story counteracts the assumptions we make about small towns and reminds us that community, whatever the size, makes us who we are. The descriptions of food in this novel are some of the best I've seen and rival Louise Penny. The sugar, the bread, the kitchen Livvy bakes in every morning and the way she approaches new recipes with us experiencing each ingredient makes this cozy novel delicious as well.  Vermont as the setting also amplifies the cozy happy energy of the story; there's line dancing, small bars, a tiny sugar cabin Livvy moves into that has a woodstove, so many blankets and smells of pine and nature. Every season described is idyllic and enjoyable, even aside from the plot!  The Dagger (16:37): Holly discussed In the House in the Dark of the Woods by Laird Hunt, a historical fiction suspense book set in colonial New England that follows a woman, Goody, who leaves her husband and son for the day to pick berries. She finds herself venturing deeper and deeper into the woods and stumbles upon a house - and much, much more. Holly's key takeaways were: This novel is lyrical but concise and reminded Holly of T.S. Elliott poems; the woods act as a symbol for freedom and dreams, for example. There's tension between the woods, where women can be wild and free, and fear of that from the uptight rules of religion and Goody's society.  The reader encounters many eerie and unknown things through this story; a deep well, a living ship made of human bones, butchering pigs, and “swallowing screams” are a short list. The setting in the woods and in rural cabins gives us a sense of creeping unknown and begs the question - are things what they seem?  A central theme of the story is womanhood and exploring the archetypes of being a woman; Hunt explores how women in history have been limited, abused, and subjugated to the rule of them through the guise of religion. Goody must break out of her traditional roles and learn to rely on the women she encounters who try to help; no one else will.  Hot On the Shelf (37:31): Holly: Linghun by Ai Jiang Devin: The Unmaking of June Farrow by Adrienne Young What's Making Our Hearts Race (40:37): Holly: Lupin Part 3 on Netflix Devin: Spider-Man: Across the Spider-verse    Instagram: @heartsanddaggerspod Website: www.heartsanddaggerspod.com   If you like what you hear, please tell your friends and rate and review us on Apple Podcasts and Spotify so that we can find our perfect audience.

Five pillars of productivity, what if it were possible to be more productive that did not require pushing, rushing and fighting to keep up? The conversation you are about to hear is taken from the event reasons and results.  Recorded between lockdowns in 2020, it was a journey from envisioning to implementing a project. We returned a few days ago after travelling south and being a tourist for a few weeks. There was the wife's ordination and a family celebration, meeting new people and connecting with friends. After loads of conversations, I was left with the feeling that people have great ideas, but the implementation always lets them down. Most of us (including myself because I have been there) will rush into a project and push like hell to get a result. Only to find that success does not follow. Find Your Productivity Superpower   So what if there was a calmer, more sustainable way of getting things done? That is where the productivity mentor Louise Miller and five pillars of productivity can help Louise is the founder of Bettylou a productivity mentoring service, she has a gift for helping people out of overwhelm by helping them create a path way through.  Louise is good with chaos and says there nothing is more fulfilling than turning something muddled into something beautifully clear. In this conversation you'll discover… the Five pillars of productivity. The unexpected first step to productivity greatness Your productivity super-power and how to harness it How to turn your big idea into inspired action Powerful habits to get stuff done with less stress and more ease   The show is 45 minutes and it will leave you with some powerful tools to get control of the chaos.  Side Note: We returned to Scotland with a combination of Colds and Covid. My voice and head was not up to editing a new show.   Next week we start the new season with 4 show on the topic of leadership.        Further details about this podcast along with my Guest's website and social links are all available at: https://lifepassionandbusiness.com/louise-miller-five-pillars-of-productivity/   Life Passion & Business is dedicated to exploring what it takes to be Extraordinary, to face challenges and rejoice in the opportunities they bring, and expand our vision into new ways of thinking and living. Most of us are programmed to focus on making improvements for our weaknesses that we tend to forget to value what we are good at and what we love doing. What we think is productive can sometimes make us too exhausted and that holds us back from succeeding. In this episode, Louise Miller talks about compassionate, sustainable productivity and its five pillars. She also shares her experiences and some advice for people who are starting and growing their businesses.   Key takeaways from this episode: Productivity is about doing what's important, as efficiently as you can or as effectively as you can, to create space for what you love. When we take a break our brain can still process things in the background and come up with all the creative solutions to problems. When starting a business, a sustainable approach is to first know about yourself and to pay attention to what feels right for you. Give yourself space to think and plan when you are growing your business. Think about the freedom that getting help is going to give you and how you can then get playful and creative and do incredible things. The Five Pillars of Compassionate, Sustainable Productivity 1. Vision Having a vision is an important starting point to knowing what is important. 2. Goals The goals you set should be aligned with your visions and should motivate you. 3. Organization and Planning You should make sure that you have plans that will move you in the direction of your goals.  4. Awareness You should pay attention to how we are using our resources to get stuff done. 5. Habits Building supportive habits will set you up for success.   Episode Timeline: 00:04 Intro 01:22 Episode Intro 01:48 What help Louise Miller offers to business owners 03:00 How Louise ended up in her business 06:39 The society's idea of success 08:04 Louise's definition of compassionate, sustainable productivity 09:31 The five pillars of compassionate, sustainable productivity. 15:12 Valuing the things that we love doing 18:30 The overwhelming idea of having too many ideas 19:16 Planning in a flexible way 21:15 Advice for starting business owners. 22:34 Advice for people who are growing their business. 24:48 Give yourself permission to get help.  25:38 How to find more bout Louis. 26:21 Outro   About Our Guest: Louise Miller is the woman behind bettylouonline.com. I've helped hundreds of self-employed women achieve the time and money freedom they craved. I've started this podcast because when I first went all in and left the corporate world to be a freelancer, I was grateful for any work that came my way. After over 20 years of freelancing and working for other people, I started to realize I'd created a glass ceiling for myself. In 2017, I finally started listening to that voice that had been telling me for a long time that I wasn't doing what I loved and fulfilling my true potential.  It took a critical illness to give me that wake-up call.  I don't want the same to happen to you. You can expect practical advice, inspiring stories, and a lot of aha moments as we uncover and kick to the curb all the obstacles you have been putting in your way. In this episode of Make It Real Trisha talks with Louise Miller who is a productivity coach and creator or calm clarity. The emphasis is on being organised in order to free up time rather than cram it full - Louise believes in 'slow living'. There isn't a hint of 'one size fits all' thinking behind her approach - and it is very realistic.   In the podcast you will learn:   5 Pillars of Productivity The danger of distractions Methods of planning - beyond a 'To Do List' How not to be hard on yourself The importance of knowing why you are doing things!   Make It Real is the refreshingly real and really useful podcast for small business owners who are keen to learn from others but deliver with their own stamp and soul.  This show, hosted by the forensic ‘unsquasher' of impact and confidence - Trisha Lewis - will equip and inspire listeners to show up and share - with fearless joy.    Described as being like ‘sitting down for a natter and a cuppa with a pal' - Trisha's enthusiasm, curiosity and easy on the ears voice will pull you in - and her ability to pick fascinating guests and get the very best out of them - inspiring! There is natural humour and plenty of lightbulb moments that ping in real time.  For more information about this week's episode, head to https://trishalewis.com/podcast/

You probably have a list of reminders somewhere. Maybe you have a calendar with important dates marked. And likely a mental to-do list. And shopping lists. And gift ideas. And you’ve got to remember to get your taxes filed. And don’t forget to get those prescriptions filled before the drug store closes. And you’ve got to renew your insurance, and …There’s a lot of information to juggle in modern life. In this episode of Choiceology with Katy Milkman, we look at ways to improve reminders and reduce forgetting around things like voting, vaccinations, and international espionage.Sarah-Louise Miller is a doctoral candidate in the Department of War Studies at King’s College London. Sarah-Louise tells the story of Elizabeth Reynolds (a.k.a. Elizabeth “Minnie” Devereux-Rochester), a young courier operating behind enemy lines in France during the Second World War. Elizabeth’s ability to absorb and memorize information contributed greatly to the Allied war effort and may very well have saved her life. You’ll also hear from former Australian Secret Intelligence Service agent Warren Reed. He details the intensive memory training he encountered at MI6 and explains how memorization is key to an agent’s success and survival.Warren Reed is the author of several books on espionage. His latest is An Elephant On Your Nose.Next, Todd Rogers joins Katy to talk about research that addresses memory, forgetting, and reminders. Forgetting and “flaking out” on virtuous goals such as eating healthy, going to the gym, or voting is a major problem with negative consequences for individuals and communities. But with some subtle shifts in choice architecture, forgetting can be significantly reduced. Todd Rogers is a behavioral scientist and professor of public policy at the Harvard Kennedy School. His research paper with Kay Milkman is titled Reminders Through Association. Finally, Angela Duckworth explains how planning prompts or implementation intentions can be used by everyone, including school-aged children, to improve follow-through on goals.Angela Duckworth is professor of psychology at the University of Pennsylvania and the author of Grit: The Power of Passion and Perseverance.Choiceology is an original podcast from Charles Schwab. “The efficiency of the RAF was maintained and often increased [in WW2] because of the Women's Auxiliary Air Force, especially in helping to win the Battle of Britain.” In this special episode, celebrating International Women’s Day 2021, we speak to Sarah-Louise Miller, a doctoral candidate in the Department of War Studies, about her research on the incredible intelligence work conducted by the Women’s Auxiliary Air Force (WAF) during WW2, and how their work set a precedence for women’s roles in security and intelligence going forwards. We discuss why their efforts behind integral successful RAF operations, which contributed to the overall Allied war victory, remain hidden even up until today, the outstanding bravery they showed in the face of danger and how they survived and thrived in a ‘man’s world’ despite the highly repressive gender norms of the time.

I have waves of ninja activity and days when it is just not happening. For me, it is all about accountability, so I have partners to hold me to this, or I make a public declaration that holds me to it. I even offer accountability to support in my coaching so that others feel held in achieving their goals. Some people find organization and productivity easy, others struggle. Thankfully in this world we are all different, which keeps it interesting, What comes easy to some is almost impossible to others. Of course, in a world of home working and restrictions, mindset implementation and productivity is a huge issue for many people. There is also a flip side to this conversation; people who are so driven that they drive themselves into overwhelm. That is the story behind my guest on today’s show. Louise Miller, the productivity mentor could always organise, even as a child she had a tidy bedroom. Efficiency has always been her thing. “My Degree is in Reading and Colouring In.” On leaving University, with a degree in English and Fine Art, her career path was unclear. But those organizational skills came in handy, and she became an administrator. She excelled to the point of promotion into management roles. It was then that she discovered how unique her skill set was, as managing disorganized people is not so easy and often stressful. Also, as an efficient and effective manager, more work ends up on your desk. There is truth in the phrase if you want something done ask a busy person. Louise’s had a successful 15-year career in administration and management until work-related stress and anxiety lead to a near breakdown. It finally dawned on her that being that efficient and productive in an organisation is not always good for your health. Our conversation is the story from almost total breakdown, to recovery and then on to soul searching discovery. Louise now supports overwhelmed business owners to reach compassionate, sustainable productivity. It is her mission is to help others land their brilliant ideas in reality, grow a fulfilling business and create space for what they love doing. I hope you enjoy the conversation with Louise Miller. This week we're doing a deep dive on the 1989 classic Teen Witch. "Frumpy" "nerd" Louise Miller learns that she'll gain witchy powers on her 16th birthday. Instead of using her powers to affect positive change, she uses them to get a new wardrobe, become popular, and win the heart of a 38 year old teen named Brad. Do her powers come with great responsibility? Does she learn a valuable lesson? No. But who cares about all that because the real reason we're all here is for that incredible "rap" battle in the middle of the movie. TOP THAT!

I am in a book club with some friends where half of them fall under the conservative Republican camp while the other half fall under the liberal Democrat camp (like me).   As someone who believes in climate change, women’s rights and the need for radical change in systemic racism, I really want to suggest a book that this whole group can read together and that will help shift the mindset of the more conservative members. I am not trying to force them into becoming liberals. I am looking for them to be more open to the possibility of climate change and that racism not only happens at an individual level, but on a systemic one. (Note, we are a group of Asian-American women, so we are POC but our political views range widely.)   To have them be more receptive to my book suggestion, I am looking for books that won’t turn them off or are too out of their comfort zone (i.e., Hood Feminism, Stamped from the Beginning, etc.). So, I’m thinking of fiction books that are compelling but not too serious. Hoping these books will allow them to really empathize with characters that live beyond their world and/or imagine a world where Fox News isn’t the only source of truth.   For reference, past books we’ve read include Little Fires Everywhere and Miracle Creek. We are currently reading Dear Girls by Ali Wong. As you can see, we don’t read any controversial books and generally like popular fiction.    I’m pretty stuck on what to choose, so any help you can provide would be greatly appreciated!   Thanks so much, -Helen 2. So about a year and a half ago I moved to a new city. I’ve always considered myself a decently social and outgoing person, but since I moved I’ve struggled with some social anxiety. I think the continuous meeting of new people and re-figuring out how to connect with new people was very overwhelming, and at times I’ve felt like I was failing. I’m looking for a book where I can connect to the characters or writers on the basis of social anxiety. I’m imagining connecting to the main character and watching them grow/overcome their anxiety throughout the novel. Although I prefer fiction, I’m open to anything. Thanks! -Emily 3. So this is an oddly specific request. I just finished The Marriage Plot by Jeffrey Eugenides and was just enthralled the whole way through. I loved what the New Yorker called the characters’ “intellectual angst” and was entranced with the unique, complex relationships between these three characters. Looking for read a-likes that feel the same as this one. In other words books that involve urban intellectuals in their twenties figuring out life and love and intimacy, where the relationships and dynamics are almost a character within themselves and maybe the whole plot (haha). I also liked how this novel and the relationships in it were very nuanced, not your standard cheesy romance. Other books I’ve enjoyed that scratch this same itch are Normal People, Conversations With Friends, The Idiot (Elif Batuman) and One Day. Thanks! -Emily 4. I don’t know if you’ve noticed this, but things are kind of terrible right now. Since the beginning of the pandemic, I’ve become interested in the lives of everyday people during ongoing difficult times in history, such as the Blitz in England, the troubles in Northern Ireland, and other places and times throughout history. I’m looking for a book to recommend for my book club that addresses this. Due to the nature of my question, I won’t ask for something that isn’t scary, but none of us is a fan of gore or children and animals in danger. Fiction or nonfiction are both welcome.    Also, let me be the millionth person to thank you for bringing Red, White, and Royal Blue into my life! I’m a DC local and it is exactly what I needed. I like remembering my city as it was before the MAGAs arrived.  -Rebecca 5. I absolutely love gothic thrillers that involve secretly badass women. Favorites include We Have Always Lived in the Castle by Shirley Jackson , Rebecca By Daphne du Maurier and The Yellow Wallpaper by Charlotte Perkins Gilman. I’m looking to find more books in this genre as we enter Halloween season! I prefer writing that is literary, but accessible. The book can be contemporary as long as it has some kind of gothic feel to it. Bonus points if it features a creepy old house! -Kate 6. Love the show! My sister and I are both really into YA fantasy, but we’ve been looking for some lighter reads in the genre and have come up pretty empty. It seems as if every YA fantasy book deals with heavy subjects, and are dark and intense. Romance is a must, but doesn’t have to be the main storyline. Thanks! -Liza 7. Hi Jen and Amanda,   I am in a reading funk and I am looking for cozy, fun reads that are dramatic but nothing really awful happens.   Something Harry Potter reminiscent would be great. Magic, fantastical elements, maybe even royalty, without the Game of Thrones gore.   I also loved Storied Life of AJ Fikry, so something about books or love of books might be fun.   Thanks so much.  -Maymuna Books Discussed Humankind by Rutger Bregman, transl. by Elizabeth Manton and Erica Moore When No One Is Watching by Alyssa Cole Fangirl by Rainbow Rowell Girl Gone Viral by Alisha Rai The Female Persuasion by Meg Wolitzer Modern Lovers by Emma Straub Blood at the Root by Patrick Phillips Mighty Be Our Powers by Leymah Gbowee with Carol Mithers (tw: domestic abuse) Mexican Gothic by Sylvia Moreno-Garcia The Bloody Chamber and Other Stories by Angela Carter The Dark Days Club by Alison Goodman Magnolia Sword by Sherry Thomas Of Fire and Stars by Audrey Coulthurst The Long Way to a Small Angry Planet by Becky Chambers See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Winston Churchill once inferred we should never waste a good crisis. The current Novo Coronavirus (Covid-19) pandemic is one we’re currently living through, there have been more regional crises before this and there’s also others down the road like climate change, oil wars, Brexit that will continue to present continuity challenges around keeping our businesses open and essential services running. In this week’s episode we are joined on #sitn by three panelists, Howard Cosby, Louise Miller & Mike Attwood who have a combined experience of over 100 years in finance & business to help us debate how we can keep our businesses open & services going during this crisis. Season 6 coming in hot!  After some feedback and lots of questions about slow living in the time of Covid-19, Brooke and Ben decided to bring forward the new season. There are so many ways  slow living might be able to help as we all adjust to the weirdness of isolation, but even more importantly as we all start to think about what we'd like our 'new normal' to look like on the other side of it. So that's what Season 6 is going to focus on, and it will be full of practical advice, realistic suggestions and hopefully helpful strategies to navigate the world during a pandemic.  In today’s episode Brooke speaks with Louise Miller, a productivity coach who doesn't believe in productivity for productivity's sake. They discuss the ins and outs of working from home, with lots of tools and strategies for those of you who are very new to the remote working scene.   Louise shares her insights on:  The importance of grace and compassion right now as everyone navigates this new reality Why creating 'Ta Da' lists instead of 'To Do' lists is one powerful way of finding satisfaction in our work efforts - particularly on those days where we feel we're not doing enough Why the loss of your commute might be affecting you more than you think  How installing a buffer in to your daily rhythm can help create grace and compassion amidst the stress and worry Why 'slow productivity' gets such a bad rap and why she's such a big fan of it Looking for more Slow? Then we’ll chat about what’s next up on the TBR pile. This episode we truly begin to show our love for middle-grade fiction. We hadn’t planned it this way, but we recommend a plethora of fantastic titles for your kids - or for the lover of kit lit in you. Next, we both divulge our worst bookish habits, and chat a little bit about how we try to “combat” those habits.  We finish up with A Book (yep, capitalized) that we’d like to put into every reader’s hands: something that has consistently ranked on our favorites list or been well-beloved by the people in our lives that we’ve convinced to read it. Perhaps it will become one of your favorites as well.   Time-stamped show notes are below with references to every book we mentioned in this episode. Welcome to the Currently Reading podcast! In our inaugural episode, we try out our format for the first time. You get to hear us get over our microphone nerves and get comfortable chatting with each other. We share a “bookish moment of the week” from each of us – something readerly in our lives that we want to highlight, a few of the books we’ve finished reading lately, and what’s up next on the TBR pile. We finish up with A Book (yep, capitalized) that we’d like to put into every reader’s hands: something that has ranked on our favorites list or been well-beloved by the people in our lives that we’ve convinced to read it. Perhaps it will become one of your favorites as well. Time-stamped show notes are below with references to every book we mentioned in this episode. January 11, 2017 at the Boston Athenæum. Join pastry chef and author Louise Miller for a discussion about her writing process and research, as well as a reading from her debut novel, A City Baker’s Guide to Country Living. When Olivia Rawlings—pastry chef extraordinaire for an exclusive Boston dinner club—sets not just her flambéed dessert but the entire building alight, she escapes to the most comforting place she can think of—the idyllic town of Guthrie, Vermont, and her best friend Hannah. But the getaway turns into something more lasting when Margaret Hurley, the cantankerous owner of the Sugar Maple Inn, offers Livvy a job. Miller and her full-hearted story about a big-city baker who discovers the true meaning of home have been praised by the New York Times Book Review: “Miller elevates the story by turning it into a Pinterest fantasy of rural American…[Her] visions of bucolic Vermont landscapes, cinnamon-scented kitchens and small-town friendliness make this reverie of country life an appealing one.”
