Harris, the youngest athlete at the event, clocked a 400-meter split of 52.05 seconds, surpassing her own Gwinnett County high school record and edging out Georgia's all-time high school mark. Buford track coach Fyrone Davis praised Harris as a fierce competitor with potential to become one of Georgia's top track and field athletes. Harris, who was named Runner of the Year by The Daily Post, comes from a family of track stars, including her older sisters Kimberly and Sydney. STORY 2: Dacula Alum's New Bar Shines Spotlight on Women's Sports Chelsea Fishman, a former Dacula High School soccer player, is opening Jolene Jolene, a bar and restaurant celebrating women's sports, in early 2025. Residing in Decatur and still playing soccer, Fishman has spent the past year planning the venue, inspired by the growing popularity of women's sports and a lack of dedicated spaces in Atlanta. Jolene Jolene will feature food and drinks, with a focus on women's sports, including local teams like the WNBA's Atlanta Dream. The bar's name, inspired by Dolly Parton's song, reflects Fishman's passion for the cause. The menu will include elevated bar food with unique items. For updates, visit Jolene Jolene's social media or website.   STORY 3:    Gwinnett County's First Woman Pediatrician Set To Retire Dr. Taru Shah, Gwinnett County's first female pediatrician, is retiring after 44 years of service. She will close her practice, Shah Pediatrics in Lawrenceville, on September 20. Since founding the practice in 1980, Shah has treated an estimated 107,000 patients and seen multiple generations of families. A native of India, she trained at Topiwala National Medical College and Illinois Masonic Medical Center. Shah, who has also taught at Mercer School of Medicine, noted significant changes in pediatric care due to technology and increased focus on mental health. Post-retirement, she plans to spend time with her grandchildren, assist her husband with his business, and engage in community activities. Patel, arrested on August 19, faces charges including Obscene Internet Contact with a Child and Criminal Attempt to Commit a Felony. Stipcak, arrested the following day, faces similar charges. Both men are accused of sending explicit photos and trying to arrange sexual encounters. The Gwinnett Sheriff's Office emphasizes its commitment to protecting children and combating exploitation. Despite the recent annexation of the land by the city of Buford, the operation of the maze remains unchanged. The maze will feature the same popular attractions, including a hayride, popcorn jumping pillow, animal viewing area, and a Haunted Forest starting in late September. The 2024 season will embrace a "three pollinators" theme and offer a few new additions. The maze, recognized by Country Living magazine as one of the top corn mazes in the US, will run through November 12. For more details, visit www.BufordCornMaze.com. STORY 7:   Norcross Grad Diamond DeShields Surpasses 2,000 Career WNBA Points Norcross grad Diamond DeShields achieved a significant milestone by reaching 2,000 career points in the WNBA during a game against the Indiana Fever. Now in her seventh WNBA season, DeShields, who was drafted No. 3 overall in 2018, has played for the Chicago Sky, Phoenix Mercury, and Dallas Wings, before rejoining the Sky this season. She won a WNBA championship with Chicago in 2021 and has been named to the All-Rookie Team, All-Star Team, and All-WNBA Second Team. Today we're excited to welcome professional runner Ben Flanagan back to the show! It was about this time last year that we first got to know Ben (episode 95) after he signed his contract with On Running, but during this conversation he delivered an absolute masterclass on everything related to World Championships. Not only is Ben a wealth of knowledge on all things track, he also recently qualified for his first ever World Championship team. We recorded this interview just days before he travelled to Budapest Hungary for the 2023 World Track & Field Championships, where he represented Team Canada in the 5000m. On August 24th, Ben ran a strong & gutsy race finishing 11th in a field of exceptionally talented world class runners (in a time of 13:38.69). Unfortunately only the top eight advanced to the finals, but Ben has every reason to be proud of his debut performance on the world stage and we're pretty confident that we'll be seeing him in the Team Canada kit for many years to come. Connect with Ben:Instagram: @ben_flanaganResources we discussed in the episode:Ben's first interview (episode 95)Connect with Carolyn & Kim:Email us with guest ideas: inspiredsolescast@gmail.comInspired Soles InstagramKim's InstagramKim's FacebookCarolyn's InstagramCarolyn's FacebookCarolyn's websiteWe love hearing from you! Three-time Olympic Medalist, DeeDee Trotter has been a fierce competitor since the age of ten. She loved basketball and dreamed of playing for legendary coach Pat Summit at the University of Tennessee. Her quickness on the court convinced her coaches to steer their star athlete into track and field. Thus began a tenuous, and oftentimes inharmonious relationship between DeeDee and these two sports, her heart firmly fixed on basketball. Reluctantly, she became the Georgia state indoor track champion, setting a state record in the 200-meter dash.  She accepted a track scholarship at the University of Tennessee with the understanding that she would be able to do both sports, but it did not work out that way, much to her disappointment.  In the midst of this disillusionment, DeeDee continued to improve on the track, winning numerous titles – including a gold medal at the World Track and Field Championships while on the 400-meter relay for team USA – all the while still having to be convinced, coaxed, and – sometimes – tricked into - running.  However, her success continued, and she became the first female athlete to receive a professional contract while still in college. She traveled the world, and competed internationally pursuing her professional career.  During the fall training for the 2008 Olympic trials, she suffered what should have been a career-ending injury. But through hours of grueling rehabilitation, and the tireless dedication of her healthcare team, she solidified her spot on her second Olympic team, in the Beijing Summer Games. Over the next three years, she continued to struggle to find her way back - losing races, confidence, money, and sponsors—but she kept believing. In the year before the 2012 Olympics, she began to create a blueprint, a roadmap to chart her daily progress. Through this process she created new neural associations, speaking over the pain, negativity, and loss of the previous three years. DeeDee was named the “glitter-faced warrior,” by the track fans at the 2012 London Olympics, winning bronze, and gold medals in the 400-meter run, and 400-meter relays. Today DeeDee is showing no signs of slowing down, she is an international motivational speaker, master of mental performance training, and recent graduate of the Atlanta Art Institute with a degree as a Baker and Pastry Chef, realizing another childhood dream of becoming a professional pastry chef. Her delicious creations can be found at her Taste of Gold Bakery, “where greatness has a taste.” It was my pleasure to host this inspirational and purposeful superstar on this episode of Intrinsic Drive™.

This is part two of a really fun episode with two very impressive track athletes, Camden Law of Chatfield H.S. and Jake Culig of Bear Creek H.S., who finished 2nd and 3rd at the Colorado 5A State meet in the 800 meters. As I mentioned before, even if you're not a high school track fan, I think there is a lot to gain from listening to these insightful young men. In the previous episode #215, we talked about how these young men developed as runners, their training and racing strategies and experiences, and the bond they developed in competition. In this episode, we talk more about dealing with running injuries, running during lockdown, shoe technology, running in college, college recruiting, and what is timely after the recently-completed World Track and Field Championships in Eugene, OR which barely was a blip on the consciousness of the American public, ways track could be more popular to sports fans. These young men are great testaments to how hard work, dedication, and terrific character and humility can lead to dramatic improvements and ultimately tremendous success.Jake CuligInstagram jacob_culigCamden LawInstagram camdenclawBill Stahlsilly_billy@msn.comFacebook Bill StahlInstagram @stahlor

The state of Oregon is "psychological operations" (psyop) central. And today, the team discuss the recent statement by criminal governor Kate Brown. She was/is the alleged first bisexual governor in US, and why that matters is beyond me. But that is what she talks about and pushes as "who she is". And not only that she took the tax dollars of other Oregonians and paid for a tv ad that said "in Oregon, we say gay". What??? That is misuse of tax dollars and not worthy of tax dollar use. Yet, she and her criminal cabal did it anyway. This because she is not up for reelection after serving her two Dominion years as a criminal tyrant. She will be held accountable for her crimes as she is guilty of fraud, bribery, collusion, attempted overthrown of federal government, and conspiracy. Those are the crimes I know she is guilty of, so there are more. She needs gitmo4life as she is guilty of treason on many levels. The last couple of weeks the world has ascended on Oregon for the World Track event. And what did criminal Kate Brown and the University of Oregon, they promoted homosexual agenda by placing banners along the highway. You have to ask your self why??? Why are they pandering to the weak segment of society? And that may be the answer as they want to impower the weak to test the resolve of the strong. That is psychological war in my opinion. ________________________WE THE PEOPLE are at war with the deepstate criminal cabal!!!Turn off your tv, radio, and stop listening to paid professional liars spreading propaganda.***SUPPORT Independent Free Speech Reporting***NEO420 = News Intelligence Entertainment- Here is our direct Paypal account.https://www.paypal.com/donate/?hosted_button_id=URXRDL6AJ8H7GThank you for the SUPPORT & SHARING the TRUTH!!!Go to GOD for discernment and wisdom.Know the Truth as the Truth will make you free! Among those who earn All-Star status is Pittsburgh Passion guard Jacqueline Cook, and she did it in her rookie year. And her return to football began with the disappointment of being told she couldn't play on a different team and a different sport because she is a trans woman. That wasn't a problem in the inclusive WFA, and each game week she make a 2-hour trek from her home in Canton, Ohio (the Hall Of Fame City) to Pittsburgh (The Steel City) and open holes for the Passion, and perhaps open minds as well. Julie's Favorite Sports Movies: We're celebrating Satellite Sisters Summer Sports Spectacular this week. Here's Julie's list of favorite sports movies. A League of Their Own This is a Satellite Sister Solid Gold choice. This movie has everything: sisters, baseball, Geena Davis, Rosie O”Donnell, Madonna in center field, and Tom Hanks telling the players,” there's no crying in baseball”. Bend It Like Beckham A wonderful coming of age/cultural assimilation/girl power story about Jess Bijam who wants to play soccer like her idol, David Beckham but struggles to respect her traditional Indian family values. And, hello, Keira Knightley plays Jess's friend and David Beckham makes a cute cameo. Bull Durham It's hard to pick my favorite baseball movie but the kitchen scene with Susan Sarandon and Kevin Costner makes Bull Durham my top pick. The movie is about baseball in a very deep way but also has breezy romantic comedy.  Rocky I loved the original Rocky. It's the ultimate underdog movie and has one of the best theme songs ever. Also, Talia Shire shines in the film.  Hoop Dreams An excellent documentary following two young Chicago basketball prospects trying to use their athletic talents to get to a better life. The two stars face racism, poverty, injury and other roadblocks trying to make their dreams come true. The film left me in tears.  Friday Night Lights Watch the original movie with clear eyes and a full heart. Before there was Kyle Chandler as Coach Eric Taylor, there was Billy Bob Thornton and Tim McGraw in a film that follows the coach and players of a high school football team in Odessa, Texas. As a transplant, I am beginning to appreciate what Friday night football means to Texas communities. The film is as much about Texas culture as it is about football.  Bad News Bears Haven't we all been on a team for work or play where you feel like a group of misfits or outcasts? This is a movie about kids who never expect to care about competing or winning. Tatum O'Neal is the 11-year old star pitcher. Walter Matthau as an alcoholic ex-baseball pitcher turned coach is perfect. The ending involves a championship game and a big celebration for the Bears.   Liz's sport movie faves include Robert Redford in Downhill Racer and Bill Murray in Caddyshack! Plus Without Limits, a great T&F movie with Billy Crudup as Steve Prefontaine and Donald Sutherland as Coach Bill Bowerman Lian names the great cycling flick Breaking Away and The Cutting Edge, a skating rom-com that does the sport proud. "In the huddle, that's kind of what I ended with: At the end of the day, you don't know going into a season like this if everything is going to work out. We are here with an opportunity to be successful...We said it at the regional meet – because you could kind of feel it building and our Top 5 were really dialed in and running well. I said, 'Take the time and appreciate what you're doing right now. There's no guarantee of it. All you can ask for is an opportunity.' And they really took advantage of that. I'm thankful for these people I'm surrounded by. This staff is awesome. This team is awesome." North Carolina State coach Laurie Henes joins the show just days after the Wolfpack won the team's first-ever NCAA cross country title. Early on in the conversation, you'll be quick to hear Coach Henes point out that NC State won AIAW Cross Country titles in 1979 and 1980 before the NCAA. She knows her NC State history because as an athlete, she was an NCAA champion and a six-time All-American for them and then went on to have a professional career that included representing the U.S. at the World Track & Field Championships in Sweden in 1995. She finished just two spots away from making the Olympic team the following year. By that point, she had already been a member of the NC State coaching staff for four years. Now, she's been the women's head coach for 16 years. In this conversation with me and my co-host Mac Fleet, you'll hear more about how she's fostered and created such a successful team and atmosphere and a bit about her thoughts on the success of female coaches within the NCAA. Right after we got off the call with her, she was named the Southeast Regional Coach of the Year and I'm sure that's not the last honor that's going to come from this remarkable year for her and the team. Elevating American Distance Running: Ben Rosario  Ben Rosario is the head coach of the HOKA Northern Arizona Elite. His athletes have been wildly successful in recent years, with the most notable being Aliphine Tuliamuk's win at the 2020 US Olympic Trials. His athletes Stephanie Bruce and Kellyn Taylor also finished in the top ten of that race, and on the men's side, Scott Fauble, a 2:09 marathoner, came in 12th.   In this episode, Coach Claire talks to Ben about the Olympic Marathon Trials, focusing on how well his female athletes did, how HOKA NAZ treats female athletes, especially in light of the Nike Oregon Project, and why he thinks so many female runners are still posting PRs well into their 30s.  Ben also shares some great coaching advice, his training philosophy, and his insight into why so many world records have been posted during COVID.    At the time of this recording, Ben was preparing for The Marathon Project held on December 20. Coach Claire asks Ben for his predictions and will post the results here in the show notes following the race. Like many coaches, Ben started out as an accomplished runner himself as a member of the Hansons Brooks team and he competed in the Olympic Trials twice before turning to coaching full time.  In his six+ years with Northern Arizona Elite, Ben’s athletes have won U.S. National Titles in cross country and on the roads at 10k, the half marathon and the 25k, as well as New Zealand National Titles on the track and the roads.  HOKA NAZ Elite athletes have recorded 8 top-10 finishes at World Marathon Majors. The team has been represented at the World Cross Country Championships, the World Half Marathon Championships, and at the World Track and Field Championships.  His athletes have also competed at the European Athletics Championships, the Great Edinburgh International XC Meet, the NACAC Cross Country Championships, the NACAC Track Championships, the Pan American Cup Cross Country Meet and the Pan American Games.  In 2016, the team produced two sixth-place finishes at the Olympic Trials Marathon and two fourth-place finishes in the 10,000 meters at the Olympic Track and Field Trials. At the 2020 Olympic Marathon Trials, four HOKA NAZ Elite athletes posted top 20 finishes, including three in the top eight in the women’s race led by Aliphine Tuliamuk–the Trials Champion.    Questions Ben is asked: 4:19 2020 has been pretty crazy for everyone in the world but specifically for the team that you lead, Northern Arizona Elite. Let's go back in time to February when you were getting ready for the Olympic Marathon Trials in Atlanta. Can you take us back there and recap what you were thinking?   5:10 Atlanta is a pretty tough course with all the hills. Obviously that was not a problem for at least your female athletes.   5:28 Your athlete, Aliphine Tuliamuk, won the women's race and was planning to head to Tokyo when the world shut down. What was that like as her coach?   6:41 I would love to talk to you about Aliphine Tuliamuk’s recent announcement that she is pregnant and due in January. As her coach, I’m sure she came to you and said, “Hey, Ben, this is what I’m going to do.” What was that conversation like?    7:26 How tough was it keeping Aliphine’s pregnancy a secret?   8:33 You are quite experienced in elite mom runners. Several women on your team are moms and are still just killing it. I would love to talk about Kellyn Taylor, Stephanie Bruce. I would love to talk about Stephanie for a minute. She is almost 37 years old and still getting PRs in the 10K. How is that possible?   10:14 It didn’t used to be so long ago that mid-30s was old for a runner but now that’s not the case, and I think maybe it has something to do with belief, too, seeing all these new great examples.   11:06 I want to keep going back to the women because you have been coaching some really great ones obviously, and American women are seeing a resurgence in endurance running. American men maybe not so much. Would you want to talk about that?   12:32 I want to talk to you about how women are treated in this sport. We’ve all heard about the crazy things with the Nike Oregon Project and how Kara Goucher was treated when she was pregnant. I don’t think that it’s going to be the same story with Hoka. I would love to have you share what you could say about how Hoka supports its female athletes.   15:06 I think you’re right that when all that came out about the Oregon Project that we thought as fans, “Oh. This is the way they’re all treated.” But it’s great to hear that that’s not the case.   15:34 Whenever I get a coach on, I love to talk about coaching advice to hopefully help someone who’s listening become a better runner. Do you have different training approaches for the kids who come straight out of college than you do for your veteran elite runners?   17:03 Let’s talk in a little bit more detail about the training advice. Most runners get the advice hard days are hard; easy days are easy. But then you throw in some medium days. I think that’s where a lot of recreational runners trip up is those medium days. Can you talk about those and what they’re for and how you use them?   19:22 You don’t always have to run your hardest, right?   20:11 You're also a fan of high mileage and I want to know what that means to you because as runners we all want to run as much as possible but clearly there’s a point when high is too high. So what is that point? Obviously it’s individual, but how does somebody know what is high for them? Where’s that sweet spot?   22:51 Besides your athletes, this year we've seen so many world-record breaking performances in 2020, which seems counterintuitive since there have been so few races, the world is not normal, and people can’t train the way they usually do. What do you attribute that to?     24:14 I’m sure the cynics would say the number of world-record breaking performances in 2020 are because of the shoes or because there’s not enough drug tests in COVID. What do you say about those kinds of things?   25:25 So you think there should be regulations on running shoes like them being available to the public or there’s a stack height, that kind of stuff; is that what you mean?   27:00 What's next for you and your athletes?  How do you predict the running world will change in 2020?     28:29 This will probably air after the Marathon Project this weekend, but I would love to have you handicap it a little bit, tell us who’s all racing and what do you predict?   31:40 How many participants are there for the marathon? Questions I Ask Everyone:   32:17 If you could go back and talk to yourself when you started running, what advice would you give?   33:31 What is the greatest gift running has given you?    33:56 Where can listeners connect with you? Quotes by Ben: “I think what we’re learning is that women can run really well into their mid-to-late 30s, and we’re learning that not only from Steph but Shalane, Des, Kellyn, Molly Huddle; all kinds of women in the US and beyond are showing that in distance running, women keep getting better.”   “In general, my goal anyway is to keep people around here for a really long time. So we’re definitely taking a long-term approach and we’re not trying to necessarily throw everything at them right away. We’re trying to slowly add pieces over time, and you see that with the folks who have stayed with us for a long time just getting better and better and better and better, and that’s what we want.”    “I think uninterrupted training leads to great performances for anybody at any level.”   “The sport has a side to it now that is very technological. And so does golf. And so does swimming. And so does baseball, right? And every sport almost. And like all those other sports, we need to make sure that the playing field is fair.” Take a Listen on Your Next Run     Want more awesome interviews and advice? Off Track: Meeting of the Unknowing Minds

This week's conversation could not have come at a more important time as we sit down with coaching legend Vin Lananna.  Vin brings an incredible perspective to what is currently going on in the sport of collegiate track and field and cross country having made stops at Stanford, Oregon and currently at the University of Virginia.  He's currently the president of USA Track & Field and has also served as head coach for the USA World Cross Country Team, World Track and Field Team and recently 2016 Olympic Team in Rio de Janeiro.  In a time where track and field/cross country programs are being cut, Vin's message is clear...it is time to unify and speak up about the importance of track and field and how it serves our communities, our universities and our student-athletes.  Please give this episode a listen...you will be inspired!

This past week, the Candian contingent of athletes heading to Doha for the World Championships was announced, and among those selected, there were quite a few familiar names. One of those athletes, Maria Bernard Galea, will be representing Canada for a second time at a World Track and Field Championships, and has an Olympic appearance to her name at just age 26. Maria is a steepler, by far one of the deepest events right now in Canada, and has had a stand out year so far, putting down a big PB of 9:36 earlier in the summer, and you can bet that peak fitness in combination with big games experience make Maria an athlete to watch. The UCAC and Saucony athlete joins us this week to chat about big races, the little things and a whole lot more.
