#133 My awesome guest this week is Donald Hoffman with a mind-bending conversation. Donald Hoffman is a cognitive psychologist and popular science author, and in this episode, he talks about our perceptions of reality and then makes us question it. Do we see the world as it truly is? How can we understand the relationship between the physical world and consciousness?   Drawing from his inspirations and his own books and papers, Don teaches us about evolutionary theory and how it shapes our perceptions into illusions. In short, how has evolution made our brains perceive reality the way we do? Cool right? I definitely thought so. I hope you enjoy this podcast as much as I did! About Donald: Donald David Hoffman is an American cognitive psychologist and popular science author. He is a professor in the Department of Cognitive Sciences at the University of California Irvine, and he studies consciousness, visual perception and evolutionary psychology using mathematical models and psychophysical experiments. His research subjects include facial attractiveness, the recognition of shape, the perception of motion and color, the evolution of perception, and the mind-body problem. (Should I include more Biographical data?) Key points with time stamp: Don’s work in his own words (5:04) What makes Don passionate about his work? (6:08) Are we getting close to the answers of our difficult questions on this world and our perception of it? (9:53) How important is it to question reality? (11:19) Is there a deeper reality that creates our version of reality? (14:44) How we create Space-Time (20:04) What do we mean by “we?” What is identity? (27:39) Evolutionary theory on how our senses perceive realty and why (31:54) Why is the truth hidden from us? Donald Stockton joins the #YearOfTheVet family with a strong urgency to help the veterans trying to integrate back into the civilian world—by coaching them on the best ways to use their time in college. A Seabee at heart, Don now serves as a Veteran Advocate primarily through a program implemented by the Department of Veteran Affairs named VITAL, as their Outreach Program Specialist; as well as the President of the University of Nevada Veterans Alumni Chapter.Through our conversation, Don takes us through the hard times that forced a tough decision of whether or not to sign the papers to get back into the service—and move forward in his career as a reservist… and shares the hardships of trying to be a student, when he frankly wasn’t ready for that role yet.But as most vets that come to share their stories on here will dive into… there was a SIGNIFICANT bounce back from the man he had once looked in the mirror and hadn’t recognized, to the hero he’s become today.I first met Donald in Reno at the California Disabled American Veteran’s State conference, and was instantly drawn in by the phenomenal resources that he shared with me that the Nevada colleges have adopted for their student veterans, so if you’re skimming through show notes to find which episode to listen to—and you may want to know more about what other colleges in the nation are doing… this is the one to pay attention to… and then go over to Jose Roman’s conversation and fill in any gaps of missing information there!I had a blast talking to Donald, so much so that we stayed on the line for another half hour afterward… and I highly encourage you to reach out to him using the contact information at the bottom of the page!----------Show Notes What veteran resources looked like when Donald had first went to college in Reno after the Navy, and what it looks like now (7:06)  How veterans can become an asset to the community after college (10:32) Pre-Navy Don (11:26)  Why not do what you’re good at? The prolific Spanish producer Yamil presents his much anticipated LP in which stands out collaborations with musicians from different backgrounds. Recorded in different places of the world, the LP will be released on his own, recently born label, Pieces Of Life on the 13 of December. The Spanish producer has decided to step forward in his career with the creation of his own label Pieces Of Life, with which he will release his first LP, being the label's first reference. Under the title of “POL Talks” Yamil has reflected “something unique and different, deeper than my usual sound. A journey in which each track tells a different story but giving sense toone ensemble” he says. In fact, the idea of creating the label Pieces Of Life is motivated precisely to unleash all his creativity, without imposed restrictions or limitations by the dominant trends. “POL Talks” was born at the end of 2018 and its creation process lasted through last year as Yamil needed time to involve all the musicians and artists that he wanted to add to the project. The Colombian duo MNKYBSNSS really stand out, who recorded the instruments in Bogotá, the Spanish band HUMANICE, the vocals of the also Spanish wxlf RAIN or the Brazilian singer DYMNO, who worked in his study in Brazil. The rest of the rhythmic composition, musical arrangements, melodies and mix were developed in Yamil's studio in his natal town, Aranda de Duero (Burgos). The result is a piece of eight original tracks that conform “POL Talks”, eight remoted compositions from labels that flow free from Yamil's deepest soul as indispensable pieces to understand his life. The first track, homonymous, has an intriguing and mysterious nature that prepare us to what is coming. “Encontranos” manages to surprise us with its vitality, fresh air and indies reminiscences. “Deep Red In The Sky” has a soul character and picks up some of the initial deepness that “See You Coming” maintains with sweeter elements. “Never No Right” offers us a little truce, allowing us to relax and enjoy this little heaven of peace that doesn't go away with “What Don't Wanne Be”, although it takes us to more emotive sides. “Too Many Questions” adds the needed emotion and darkness to balance the sweet and emotive end with “Endless”. The LP has also a striking cover made by the graphic artists Laura Cruz (Wompaint), a unique piece of art that reflects perfectly the organic nature of these tracks. Don't think that's possible. You need to experience this for yourself. Be aware that just by listening to Dr. Nelson's personal "energy clearing" you may feel a change in yourself because we are all connected. (Listen to co-host and gifted energy healer Robin Cote's comments during the podcast) Mark says, "As we know "addictions" are gnarly situations, and there is no one singular solution. (Six months ago I met the executive director at the Above and Beyond Family Recovery Center in Chicago and learned that there is a 95% relapse rate with the conventional 12-steps method. That stat shocked me.) Energy medicine work such as that I practice--in conjunction with other layers of support--can be a helpful tool for people that are really, really stuck in addictions. So often I speak with people, asking them about their big dreams, and I hear; “I don’t know what I want.” That’s because most people have rejected their big dreams because they don’t believe it is possible for their dream to come true. Most people have become comfortable settling for their current conditions and experience. Others truly don’t know what they want or I should say, they don’t think they know what they want. One of the easiest and fastest ways to decide what you want is to consider what you don’t want. Seriously, spend some time with this. Sit down with pen and paper and write down what you don’t want in your life. Write down what you don’t want to experience. Then consider the law of opposites. Look at your list and ask yourself what would be the polar opposite of what I don’t want? With this simple exercise, it won’t take long to develop a list of what you truly want to experience in your life. In today’s episode I go into more detail about identifying what you want. For many years, “education” meant sitting at a desk in a classroom, listening to a teacher give a lecture. Today that is no longer the case. The world of education, especially for adults, is changing at a rapid pace. I’m thrilled to bring you a conversation with a great educator who helps us think about the future of education and what it means for us, both as learners and teachers. Today I’m thrilled to be talking with Don Sanders, who is the Staff Development Pastor and Director of the Merold Institute for Ministry at Harvester Christian Church in St. Charles, Missouri. He also just happens to be my older brother!  Don is not only one of the best educators I know—he’s also a master learner who is currently working on a Doctor of Education degree at The Southern Baptist Seminary in Louisville, Kentucky. In our conversation, you’re going to learn about creativity from an educator’s perspective, and how Don has infused a creative learning approach to The Merold Institute for Ministry, which he directs. You’ll learn what the future holds for education, as well as some very practical strategies for being a lifelong learner. Don also shares some interesting thoughts about his doctoral program and how it has changed him as an educator. Episode Highlights In this episode, you’ll discover: Why creativity should flow through every aspect of education. How Don defines “creativity” from an educator’s point of view. What has changed in ministry training in recent years. Why church-based institutes are not in direct competition to traditional Christian colleges. What it takes for a church to establish an institute. What Don sees as the future of ministry education. Don’s experience in pursuing a doctoral degree, and how it has changed him as an educator. The value of reading and discussion groups in your personal development. How Don keeps creatively sharp, and the role physical exercise plays in it.  Key Takeaways 1. See yourself as an educator. It doesn’t matter whether you have a title that is associated with education—Professor, Teacher, Educator, etc. You always need to be teaching. You have skills and talents that others need to learn. You have knowledge that can benefit others. What are some of the ways you can teach others? Here are a few: conversations, blog, podcast, speaking, classes, live events, mastermind or small groups, books, articles, mentoring, social media posts, consulting just to name a few. 2. Be a constant learner. My brother and I are both constant readers. You will rarely see either one of us without a book. But reading is only one of many ways to learn. He is working on a doctorate degree. I am constantly participating in webinars, meetups, masterminds, and other learning opportunities. The only way to stay fresh and relevant is to be a constant learner. Don’t forget about face-to-face interaction. Almost every college offers online education today. (I’m the Director of Online Learning at my workplace, St. Louis Christian College.) But there is still great value in face-to-face learning opportunities. As much as I love the internet and all the opportunities it gives us for influence and learning, there is still something irreplaceable about in-person interaction. I hope you’ll make it a priority to build relationships offline, attend meetups and local events, and schedule lunches with people. Don Costa is a husband and a father, a real estate investor, and for better or worse, an entrepreneur. In 2012 he was broke and not in the “I don't have enough to do what I want” kind of way. He was broke and had to choose between groceries for the week or the electric bill. He would literally grocery shop with a calculator in hand so that he wouldn't embarrass himself at checkout. More than once, Don pulled up to the gas station and bought one gallon of gas with quarters so that he could get his kids to the sitter. That year Don mentally hit his lowest point, feeling defeated, scared, and in a deeper hole than most of you that are just starting out. He looked in the mirror and had that honest conversation with himself. “What is it I really want to be doing?” He knew he wanted to get back into real estate, but this time being more focused and running it like a proper business. He made the decision to build a true real estate investment company. As Don looks back, one thing stands out – “as if”. From day one, Don acted “as if” he had money in the bank and was already crushing it. He acted “as if” he had been doing it for years with all the confidence that came with it. From day one, he acted “as if” he was building one of the largest and most reputable house flipping companies in his market. That mindset gave Don the strength to overcome obstacles and the confidence to build the necessary relationships to succeed. He won't even try to pretend it was easy; it was some of the hardest work he's done. But now he has the checks to prove it was worth it! Four and a half years after that day, Don is simply amazed at what was accomplished. His company has become such a strong force in his market. Don currently has a team made up of 14 and with systems, discipline and a willingness to do the work, will do over 200 deals in 2018. These are a combination of Rehabs, Wholesales, and Wholetails. What you'll learn about in this episode: How Don got started in real estate, a story much like the one many real estate investors tell What Don does in real estate. Learn the three ways he makes money with real estate and why it's good to have a little variety in the way you do business What “hoteling” is and who coined the phrase The average profit Don earns when rehabbing a low to middle end property and why he prefers to stay away from high-end properties The average profit Don earns on wholesale properties and how he's finding the properties he deals with The different marketing tools Don has in his arsenals and which ones he believes deliver the most tremendous results The number of real estate deals Don does in a year Why Don steers clear of MLS listings and why you might want to as well Why Don believes it's important to build a strong team of professionals and then “get out of your own way” so you can become successful in real estate Don's belief that surrounding yourself with people going in the direction you want to go is critical in business and can prevent entrepreneurs from being held back from success The power of an automated business process that does the work for you Why Don believes direct mail is one of the most powerful marketing tools to use in the digital age Why entrepreneurs need to understand, know, and test their markets constantly to stay competitive in real estate How much Don spends each year on his marketing efforts and how much he's bringing in for every dollar he spends. That number will inspire you to rethink your opinions on direct mail Why Don believes part of his success is in the quality of the lists he's using for marketing purposes The turning point for Don between getting by and building wealth Resources: TheMentorPodcast.com/FlipTalk Get Ron's Free Book and Audio Here Get Ron's $1 Offer Here

We did that in the weekend after we aired on Shark Tank. So, it was just like rocket ship.” - Don Hejny “One of the things that happens on Shark Tank all the time, is companies get this huge influx in orders, and then they just totally screw their people because they don't prep for it.” - Don Hejny “We've just DIYed it from the beginning, and stayed scrappy, and kept going within our means.” - Don Hejny “You're going to reach a point where you just can't throw more bodies at it. You can't throw more time at it. You can't throw more energy at it, you've got to work smarter. Then there's times where it's like, no, you’ve just got to put your shoulder down and just dig in and do some work.” - Don Hejny “Figure out how to create the business that allows you to have margin to grow more efficiently.” - Don Hejny “If you don't like it, you just let us know, we'll shoot you a refund, super easy.” - Don Hejny “If you can give yourself more margin, and you can assume positive intent, I think you can just treat people the way that you want to be retreated.” - Don Hejny “If you think you're going to make one thing and you don't have the resources for that, think, what could I make with what I have today, and how do I transition it into that?” - Don Hejny “Being four years into this, I've learned a lot to just fail quicker, don't drag things out. If it's not working, figure out a new path, and transition quicker.” - Don Hejny “When you're climbing the mountain, and all you see is the rocks in front of you, and all of you see as the challenges, and you got to turn around and look out once in a while.” - Don Hejny “If you're sitting out there trying to make waves in the ocean, you're never going to get anywhere. When I think about the quality of life I want, and why I am in business, it's necessary to have standards of excellence! And Ikea food is way below that standard... My guest for this week's episode of the Ultimate Guide to Partnering is Don Yaeger, whose latest book with Chicago Cubs Catcher David “Granpa Ross” just landed at #10 on the New York Times Bestseller list. In this episode this 10-time NYT best-selling author and award winning speaker discusses the attributes of successful partnerships and teams ! As a former Associate Editor for Sports Illustrated, Don built a reputation as one of America’s most provocative thought leaders. As a speaker, he is often sought to discuss lessons on achieving greatness, and learned from experiences with some of the greatest sports legends. And he’s been invited to every major talk show – from Oprah to Nightline, from CNN to Good Morning America. Learn more about Don here. Don and I discuss the attributes of great teams and great partnerships gleaned from his book Great Teams.  Some key takeaways from the interview: A shared "purpose" at a deep level is important to the success of both great teams and great partnerships. Understanding "leadership style" and how to apply it to your partner and team's situation is important. Its equally important to understand your partners leadership style and adapting to ensure the most successful collaboration and the long term success of the partnership. "Comraderie" and a sense of "collective direction" were key to the 2013 Boston Red Sox's successful turnaround and drive to a World Series and how these attributes apply to teams and partnerships. Why "embracing change" is critical for partners looking to survive and thrive in this age of rapid digital transformation - the best teams are constantly out ahead. How David Ross changed his "mindset" to serve his team and ensure his destiny. More can be learned in Don's latest New York Times Bestseller, TEAMMATE - by David Ross and Don Yaeger. As with each of my episodes, I ask Don to share his advice for our listeners on personal and professional growth. Best advice you were given when you started out - When Don graduated Ball State with a degree in journalism in 1984, his dad suggested he use each interview to learn a lesson that would also serve him. In over 2500 interviews, Don asked this one question, "If you could point to ONE HABIT that allowed you to do what others could not do, what would that habit be?" Don distilled this to his book "Greatness - The 16 Characteristics of True Champions" - by Don Yaeger.  Favorite lesson - from his interviews and talks with legendary coach John Wooden, "constantly pay attention and manage your inner circle". Don was a part of John Wooden's mentorship program and met with him often, resulting in the book - A Gameplan for Life. Favorite Quote - "Make each day your masterpiece" - from John Wooden. Advice he'd give his 25 year old self - "Slow Down". Which is great advice and something I'd recommend to all early in career listeners. Favorite or most gifted book - "The Notebook"- by Nicholas Sparks". What Don would put on a billboard, "Greatness is a journey and not a destination".
