Don Yaeger is an award-winning Keynote Speaker, Business Leadership Coach, eleven-time New York Times best-selling author, and longtime Associate Editor for Sports Illustrated. He is one of America's most provocative thought leaders. From first-hand experiences, Don shares lessons on achieving greatness based on working with some of the greatest sports legends in the world. Listen in for some fascinating stories from many of your heroes on how they are intentional, curious, and hate to lose! Key Takeaways [3:55] With all the great stories that Don has experienced and written about, he shares a backstory from when he graduated university as a starting point for today's discussion. [5:15] Don shares the one question he asks everyone he interviews. [6:35] His book, Greatness: The 16 Characteristics of True Champions, is a compilation of the top sixteen answers that came up frequently from his interview question. [7:55] If you choose to lose and blame someone, then you will never achieve that next level. [9:15] The mind of a champion is wired intentionally. They know the potential weakness of blaming someone else so they keep themselves from doing it. [10:25] Don shares the one lesson that resonated with him that he learned from coach John Wooden. [12:30] Don is very selective about his inner circle and explains his process on how he chooses them carefully. [15:25] When your people know you care and want what's best for them, their level of commitment will be off the charts. [18:20] You can become invaluable without being the most valuable. Don shares a story about the year the Cubs won the world series to bring this point home. [22:40] Don learned to be more attentive to the people he doesn't see often within his organization. [24:45] Getting to the matters of the heart doesn't happen quickly; it's about listening well, finding connection, and taking time to find out what drives the other person. [25:50] Trust takes time. Don constantly builds upon the last conversation he has with a person to earn their trust. [28:00] Coaches shared with Don that their relationship with their players changed when their conversations and questions were better structured. [29:50] Don talks about why some teams are capable of being consistently high-performing while others are not. [33:30] Don's interview with Ed Bastian, the CEO of Delta, was one that really stood out to him. He explains why. [35:30] Jan really enjoyed his conversation and interview with Joel Peterson, the Chairman of JetBlue. He shared what his impact was to him and Jim. [38:35] Everybody is gifted but it's those who feel comfortable expressing their gifts and have the willingness to be vulnerable with others that makes the team successful. [40:20] Don talks about the days he spent together with Walter Payton when he was writing his autobiography. [41:45] Don asked Walter to pick one day in his future to give up everything else for. Don didn't write his answer in his book. [44:30] Intentionality is one of Don's favorite words. [46:20] A great question can be a gift to someone. Don tells an emotional story with Warrick Dunn as an example. [51:15] Listener challenge: Great leaders are curious, ask great questions, listen intently, and they care. Quotable Quotes “If you're willing to be curious and willing to ask others about what they believe gave them an edge, it's amazing what you'll learn.” — Don Yaeger [6:00] “Losses are just learning opportunities and if you don't treat them as that, then you're not gonna be your greatest version of yourself.” — Don Yaeger [8:10] “When people know that you care for them, you speak truth to them and you want what's best for them, whether it's good for you or not, when they know that, the discretionary energy they will pour into what you're asking them to do is off the charts.” — Don Yaeger [15:45] “We have invaluable people who we don't ever give a parking space to; they're never employee of the month but boy, do they make a difference. And if we can learn to celebrate them, boy, what a game-changer it is.” — Don Yaeger [22:05] “They may act like they are welcoming of me but truth is, they have defenses up and I have to not be bothered by that. I have to recognize it and earn the right for them to let those defenses down.” — Don Yaeger [26:50] Resources Mentioned Theleadershippodcast.com Sponsored by: Darley.com Donyaeger.com Don on LinkedIn Don on Twitter Grab Don's books: Greatness: The 16 Characteristics of True Champions and more John Wooden Ed Bastian Joel Peterson Warrick Dunn Walter Payton

In this week's podcast Coach Blu speaks with Carrie Steinseifer Bates, a 3-time Gold Medal Olympic Swimmer having competed in the 1984 world Olympics in Los Angeles California. Listen as she describes life just below the waterline, growing up in an alcoholic home, and how she used the freedom of the pool to escape the world, discovering the water as a safe place where she would work out her fears, frustrations, and a good place to work out emotions because “No one can see you cry under the water”. Following her 1984 Olympic success, Carrie missed qualifying for the 1988 Olympics. As that chapter closed she continued to progress in College, swimming and coaching, starting a family, and becoming a mother. Unfortunately, addiction also began to take a stronghold and as she describes it, distracted her from what her true and authentic purpose was. Listen as she describes her recovery in aspects of several treatment episodes and then coming to an awakening that she faced and knew the only way to genuine recovery and sobriety would be laid upon the foundations of honesty. Having multiple treatment episodes under her belt, it was as though they were false starts on an Olympic journey of recovery that she learns from and ultimately takes the dive into deeper understanding, emotional balancing, and overcoming adversity. After 18 years absent from the water in the pool of life, she took that plunge and reestablish her commitment as a mother, mentor, and ultimately an Ironman triathlete. Carrie says, “True Champions never let the fire inside them die out”, and she is an example of what can happen if you truly want to go for gold in recovery. Today she continues to maintain an active lifestyle and has found her true calling in assisting those on the starting blocks of sobriety by working at Hazleton Betty Ford in Oregon. This is a podcast not to be missed, as you will feel the passion she has for life noticed after gold in the Olympics but also, life after addiction. In this episode, listeners can look forward to hearing from Kirk Mango, a champion athlete, and coach who also happens to be Chris’s father-in-law. Kirk was a Division 1 gymnast, a two-time college All-American, two-time Northern Illinois University Hall of Fame member, and he still holds the Northern Illinois record for the highest score on the still rings. In addition, he was the head coach of three Elite Eight gymnastics teams, was awarded the Illinois Coach of the Year in 1992 for gymnastics, and has coached athletes who received All-American Hall of Fame and All-American team awards. Kirk has been a guest speaker on the radio, news television shows, sports podcasts, and at schools, where he encourages children to become champions from the inside out. His book, Becoming a True Champion: Achieving Athletic Excellence from the Inside Out, features endorsements from people like Nadia Comaneci and Steve Weatherford. After 34 years of teaching, Kirk recently retired and, together with his wife of 36 years, raised two children who are also Division 1 athletes. Kirk talks to Chris about how he developed a champion mentality despite adversity and before he had seen any results and explains that winning is not a necessity, even though it can be a by-product of this mindset. It is not the outcome but the process that develops the resilience and grit necessary to be truly successful at anything. The two also get into the importance of taking personal responsibility, practicing what you preach, and teaching children that they are in control of their futures. Key Points From This Episode:How the champion mentality is part of Kirk’s identity and woven into every part of his life. The pivotal moment when Kirk was inspired by the outstanding skills of another gymnast. Kirk talks about getting into the sport much later than most other star gymnasts. How he started cultivating a champion mentality and identity before he had any results. Understanding that truly successful people focus more on the process than the outcome. The risk of focusing too heavily on winning: you become greedy and want it at all costs. How Kirk overcame the obstacle of being physically smaller than his peers in high school. Facing adversity and distinguishing between the things that you can and cannot change. The choice you have whenever you are confronted with other people’s negative opinions. Advice for making big decisions and taking personal responsibility for your circumstances. Examples of the kind of practices a person can implement to grow as a person. Chris talks about Kirk’s mindset of being your best at whatever you do, even in retirement. In this episode I share some tidbits from BNF and words of wisdom from the elections!
Which UConn women's basketball team is the greatest in program history? That's a really tough question that's probably impossible to answer, but no matter what metric you use, the 2008-09 team deserves to be in the conversation. Led by Maya Moore, Tina Charles and Renee Montgomery, the Huskies went a perfect 39-0 to capture the program's sixth national championship, absolutely demolishing everyone in their path. UConn won every game by double digits, smashing just about every ranked opponent they faced, and in the past decade since this season all of the Huskies' starters have gone on to enjoy successful pro careers. More importantly, the players on this team have become social justice pioneers who are now at the forefront of the ongoing Black Lives Matter movement. Moore recently helped get an innocent man out of jail, sacrificing some of the prime years of her career in the process, and Montgomery and Tiffany Hayes recently announced they'll be opting out of the upcoming WNBA season to focus on activism. In terms of their accomplishments on and off the court, you'd be hard pressed to find a group of winners like this 2008-09 team. Alexa Philippou from the Hartford Courant joins us for this episode, where we break down this team, their legacy and their crowning achievement in the 2009 NCAA Championship game against Louisville, which was actually a much better and more competitive game than you probably remember! My guest for this week's episode of the Ultimate Guide to Partnering is Don Yaeger, whose latest book with Chicago Cubs Catcher David “Granpa Ross” just landed at #10 on the New York Times Bestseller list. In this episode this 10-time NYT best-selling author and award winning speaker discusses the attributes of successful partnerships and teams ! As a former Associate Editor for Sports Illustrated, Don built a reputation as one of America’s most provocative thought leaders. As a speaker, he is often sought to discuss lessons on achieving greatness, and learned from experiences with some of the greatest sports legends. And he’s been invited to every major talk show – from Oprah to Nightline, from CNN to Good Morning America. Learn more about Don here. Don and I discuss the attributes of great teams and great partnerships gleaned from his book Great Teams. Some key takeaways from the interview: A shared "purpose" at a deep level is important to the success of both great teams and great partnerships. Understanding "leadership style" and how to apply it to your partner and team's situation is important. Its equally important to understand your partners leadership style and adapting to ensure the most successful collaboration and the long term success of the partnership. "Comraderie" and a sense of "collective direction" were key to the 2013 Boston Red Sox's successful turnaround and drive to a World Series and how these attributes apply to teams and partnerships. Why "embracing change" is critical for partners looking to survive and thrive in this age of rapid digital transformation - the best teams are constantly out ahead. How David Ross changed his "mindset" to serve his team and ensure his destiny. More can be learned in Don's latest New York Times Bestseller, TEAMMATE - by David Ross and Don Yaeger. As with each of my episodes, I ask Don to share his advice for our listeners on personal and professional growth. Best advice you were given when you started out - When Don graduated Ball State with a degree in journalism in 1984, his dad suggested he use each interview to learn a lesson that would also serve him. In over 2500 interviews, Don asked this one question, "If you could point to ONE HABIT that allowed you to do what others could not do, what would that habit be?" Don distilled this to his book "Greatness - The 16 Characteristics of True Champions" - by Don Yaeger. Favorite lesson - from his interviews and talks with legendary coach John Wooden, "constantly pay attention and manage your inner circle". Don was a part of John Wooden's mentorship program and met with him often, resulting in the book - A Gameplan for Life. Favorite Quote - "Make each day your masterpiece" - from John Wooden. Advice he'd give his 25 year old self - "Slow Down". Which is great advice and something I'd recommend to all early in career listeners. Favorite or most gifted book - "The Notebook"- by Nicholas Sparks". What Don would put on a billboard, "Greatness is a journey and not a destination". You access Don's complete collection of books here, you can reach Don at donw@donyaeger.com and follow Don on Facebook, LinkedIn, Twitter and Instagram. I hope you enjoy this episode.
