I interviewed April Brenden-Locke and Miguel Ochoa Castellanos about a wonderful children’s home in Chiapas, Mexico, called Hogar Infantil. April is the president of the American board of Hogar, and Miguel grew up there and runs a language school...he’s a great success story. They share how Hogar Infantil changed both of their lives, “cambiando vidas a través de la educación,” or “changing lives through education.”Miguel spoke to us from a small town in Chiapas, Mexico, the southernmost Mexican state. Miguel’s father passed away when he was six years old, and he didn’t have a happy childhood. After attending school, he would help his mom selling candy in the streets. They lived with relatives and didn’t have much money. His mom used to cry a lot, but she was a strong, hard-working woman. She made the heart-breaking decision to take Miguel to Hogar Infantil when he was just nine years old. Now that he’s older, Miguel recognizes how difficult that must have been. April grew up in a farm in Oregon. She struggled in high school, trying to figure out who she was, until she saw an opportunity to volunteer at Hogar. She went to Mexico thinking that the people at Hogar needed their help, but she quickly learned it was about becoming part of the community. She immediately felt welcomed into a big family at Hogar Infantil. The experience had a profound impact on her. “It was a place that has stayed in my heart my whole life.”Miguel told April that her decision had a big impact on him and the other Hogar residents.“Not many people decide to go to another country to help. It’s difficult to find people to share part of their time, to share part of their lives, to come to your country and your community, to help you."April was surprised when she saw how well the children took care of each other at Hogar. They didn’t have a lot of stuff, but what they had was shared with each other. They had this spontaneous sense of care and taking care of each other. When April went back to Hogar as an adult, she found that same spirit of community.Miguel believes that part of Hogar’s community spirit is the fact it’s situated in Chiapas, a part of Mexico that is very poor but also extremely generous and caring. Sharing is innate. Hogar Infantil was founded in 1963 by Nicholas Anderson, an American expat who was living in Chiapas. With just a handful of U.S. donors, Don Nich began taking in children who were living on the street. After Nich’s death in 1977, others, such as David “Capitán” Guinn, stepped in to ensure that Hogar Infantil would survive and carry on its mission to break the cycle of poverty through education.Miguel believes Hogar changed his life. After leaving Hogar, Miguel went on to study in the U.S. and to college. Then he opened up a language school in his living room, just raising enough money to buy chairs. Now he has a family, a language school, and another business. Now he has up to 200 students and employs 5 teachers. If you’ve been inspired by Miguel’s and April’s stories, you can find many ways to support Hogar Infantil and the children and staff there by visiting their website. Next week I interview Dr. Kris Gowen. After her best friend died, Kris decided to travel around to all 50 states and sign karaoke in each state! We talked about friendship, grief, and sex! Kris is cofounder of Beyond the Talk, the sex ed you wish you had. The Finding Fertile Ground podcast is brought to you by Fertile Ground Communications. Today’s episode is an interview with Dr. April Jones.  She’s a pharmacist, author, and entrepreneur.  As the parent of a childhood cancer survivor and amputee, she is an advocate for a number of interests, including adaptive sports.  She uses her family’s story to educate others and encourage them to find strength in struggle and purpose in pain.  As an author, she entertains audiences in print, ebook, and audiobook.   Dr. April Jones is not only an Oncology Medical Director for Pfizer, but she is also the author of No Mess No Message, owner of The Drifted Drum Company, a motivational speaker, an avid community volunteer, a mentor, and a leader in the pharmacy profession. Along with her many professional credentials, she’s the mother of an international adaptive athlete/cancer survivor/college student and 2 other busy boys.  It’s her personal journey that makes her an authority on transforming pain into purpose and struggle into strength.   Mentioned in this episode Website www.thedrifteddrum.com *When you buy No Mess, No Message through the website, you can purchase an author-signed copy!  Dr. April Jones can inscribe a special message if desired and/or giving as a gift!   Book link on amazon.com No Mess, No Message.  Finding Strength in Struggle and Purpose in Pain (You can see my review of the book on amazon.com!)  No Mess, No Message is also available online at Barnes and Noble, BAM, Apple, GoodReads, Bookbub, Amazon, Target, and Walmart. When you start with a disadvantage, it can make you stronger.   Tyler is April’s business partner at The Drifted Drum Co.  As the book was being published, the company was born.  It serves more than one purpose.  Tyler wanted an apparel line.  April wanted to publish other people’s stories.  So, they formed The Drifted Drum Company “The Business of Encouragement.”  The Drifted Drum Company became April’s publishing Brand, and Tyler Vibes Apparel is part of it.  She is developing books with other authors and will publish their stories under her brand.   Events are on the website under The Drifted Drum Company.  Examples include “The No Pity Party” Event and “A Path to Purpose” Virtual Retreat.  “Drifted” = ended up in a place you didn’t expect to be due to external forces directing you.  “Drum” = a vessel that can be emptied out and filled up over and over again. Details about Path to Purpose Retreat:  Tickets can be found at thedrifteddrum.com. See EVENTS tab.  It’s a Virtual event Dec 5, 10 AM-2:30 PM CT.  Cost is $50.  Use the coupon code WELOVEKIM for 10% off the ticket price.  All participants get some swag = her book (digital download) and the companion journal.  There is a great line-up of speakers!  See links above:   Kateriina Rosenblatt, human trafficking survivor, There is Hope for me Foundation Pastor Zane Isaacson - survived his Mom’s attempted abortion  Monica Schmelter, Host of Talk Show Bridges on Christian Television Network Fabi Powell, Founder of Josh Powell Foundation (sarcoma awareness) The Director of The Drifted Drum Co will share about her story of drug addiction and recovery.   One of the workshops afterward will be facilitated by Dr. Jerrica Dodd PharmD.  The book, ebook, and audiobook were released at the same time.  You can download the companion journal to the book by visiting www.thedrifteddrum.com.   April wants to launch the “No Pity Party Podcast” in 2021.  She will focus on sharing messages of inspiration and sharing resources that helped her guests.  If you want to keep up with Dr. April Jones and The Drifted Drum Company, sign up for the newsletter on www.thedrifteddrum.com.

April Katz Israeli is my honored guest on today’s podcast. She is a celebrated matrimonial attorney at Williams Law Group, with over 25 years experience. She brings an interesting point of view to our show, seeing that she represented herself in her own divorce. She will share tips on how to keep the cost of your divorce as low as possible if you are going pro se, as well as how she got over her fear of divorce and how you can get through it too. April helped her husband find a suitable divorce attorney. She had worked with almost all the local attorneys so she knew it would be hard for him to find a lawyer as there would be a conflict with almost anyone he chose. She found him a good local attorney to keep everything above board and equitable so she could move on with her life. [4:10]It’s very difficult to maintain your objectivity and keep your cool as an attorney when it's your own divorce and you're a very upset spouse with all the associated emotions. April says her divorce started off smoothly but then got ugly. [5:20]Sometimes couples think they can work issues out themselves and come up with a suitable divorce agreement.  They don’t go to a lawyer to save money. The problem is that issues come up in the future which they didn’t anticipate and have to seek litigation to deal with. They now find themselves spending money to fix what should have been done in the first place. [8:06]April shares how a mediator can be a cost-effective alternative to having separate divorce attorneys. [8:43]It's important to discuss deep issues and come to an agreement prior to marriage. This can help you avoid many problems in the future. [14:44]Relationships break down for many reasons. Some common issues are financial struggles and infidelity. When April works with couples her main focus is not so much the couple’s relationship issues but what’s best for the children. This is the court’s focus as well. [16:51]April started thinking about leaving her husband very early in her marriage. She reveals why she stayed for 23 years and what made her finally get over her fear and get a divorce. She comments that her divorce was the healthiest thing she did for herself. [22:02]If you're hearing your inner voice say that something is wrong, trust your instincts. Don't be embarrassed to talk to someone you trust about what steps to take. It's very unhealthy to internalize that voice because it will eventually manifest itself through physical illness or depression. If you feel divorce is the right decision, take the steps to give yourself that opportunity. April Boyd faced the unthinkable when her newborn daughter Nora suddenly stopped breathing at just 1 day of age. In this episode, April shares her story of going into a very dark place after her daughter died and slowly coming to the realization that she had to make a decision to claw her way out and not let her daughter’s life end as a tragedy. Instead, April chose to turn her daughter’s brief and beautiful life into a legacy. April created the Love & Loss Project to help break the isolation and silence surrounding loss. April Boyd is a private practice therapist with clients across the globe, creator of the Baby Loss Survival Guide and the founder of the Love & Loss Project, an online comfort & inspiration station for women who have experienced the loss of a baby or pregnancy. When April is not doing the work she loves to do, you might find her on the top of a paddleboard or the side of mountain with her hunky boyfriend and her six pound Yorkie Sasha. "We are here for a good time, not a long time." - song lyrics by Trooper "I think so often we get caught up in so many things that pull us so many different directions, that we really forget that ultimately, our time is in fact limited and what we do with it, matters greatly. " "The most important thing is really making the decision." "What I was afraid of is that if I just continue to self-destruct and crumble and be lost that story that would go on to be told about my daughter and for my circle of friends and for my family it would ultimately be some version that she was reason why her mother was now a complete mess. And I did not want to allow that to become her legacy. And so I really committed to the idea that I was going to force myself back to life. I was going force myself to get back to a state of being able to experience things like joy again because that is how I needed to honor her and to make sure that the tragedy of her story really became a love story." "First, know that you are going to go through this. And this is going to change you in some ways. But we still have control over which direction this is going to take us." "So often, we have that tendency to just want to outrun the pain and outrun what hurts and distract ourselves and stay busy and avoid it. But I believe in many ways, that even though that it is useful at times, if that is our main go-to strategy all the time, then what we are really doing is just prolonging that agony. That which we resist gets stronger. So instead, I think we really need to give ourselves permission to open ourselves to this, to give our own selves the care and comfort that we deserve and to make our own healing a priority." "Grief functions. It is such a magnifying glass. And it really just illuminates and brings to the surface some of our longstanding patterns, some of the longstanding pains that get in our way." "Perfectionism is just fear in really good shoes." - Elizabeth Gilbert "We need to burn off that tension and that stress." "Your body is your compass. It knows your truth. It knows what feels good to you. It knows your answer." Some of April's Favorite Things: Personal habit: Working out. Easy meal: Steamed kale and carrots. Mixed with almond-based dressing. Possession: Spiralizer. Cellphone for ordering takeout. April's Favorite Book: The Desire Map by Danielle LaPorte Best advice received: "Your body is your compass. You need to tune in to what your gut is telling you and that is your guide." April's Happiness Formula: "Be as compassionate as possible to both yourself and others because at the end of the day, we are all just doing our best and that is going to look different one day to the next. And we really do not have any idea what someone else is going through behind closed doors. And so I think if we just kind of allow ourselves to approach life with just a bit more compassion that can save us a lot of more frustration and anger and drama." "Be the guardian of your own health and happiness. Focus on the pieces that you can control and bring your attention to that." "Choose joy. I do not think that happiness is just an accident. I think that it is a choice." A Challenge from April: "Think about the one thing that you have been avoiding. What is that thing that you have been procrastinating on, that you know is calling your name? Whether that is a class that you want to take, whether that is a change that you want to make in your work day, whether that is a conversation that you have been putting off having that you know that you need to express and get out there with somebody that you care about. Do that thing that you have been putting off doing and get it done now."

Little April was not the best student in Sunday school. Usually she slept through the class. One day the teacher called on her while she was napping, "Tell me, April, who created the universe?" When April didn't stir, fortunately little Johnny, who was sitting behind her, took a pen and jabbed her in the rear. "GOD ALMIGHTY!" shouted April and the teacher said, "Very good" and April fell back asleep.  A while later the teacher asked April, "Who is our Lord and Saviour," But, April didn't even stir from her slumber. Once again, Johnny came to the rescue and stuck her again. "JESUS CHRIST!" shouted April and the teacher said, "very good," and April fell back to sleep.  Then the teacher called on April a third time. "What did Eve say to Adam after she had her twenty-third child?" And again, Johnny jabbed her with the pen. This time April jumped up and shouted, "IF YOU STICK THAT FUCKING THING IN ME ONE MORE TIME, I'LL BREAK IT IN HALF AND STICK IT UP YOUR ASS!"
