Our inner critic often suggests that it's acceptable to grieve significant losses, but we should just push through everyday heartaches like workplace rejections, feeling disconnected in our relationships, being ignored by friends, or being stuck in a job that doesn't fulfill us. Christina Rasmussen, my guest, emphasizes the importance of recognizing and processing this often overlooked type of grief. In our conversation, she will illuminate these lesser-known forms of grief, helping us heal and find a sense of peace and hope in our lives. Christina Rasmussen is an acclaimed grief educator and bestselling author of "Second Firsts," "Where Did You Go?" and "Invisible Loss." Her impactful grief work has been featured on ABC News, Psychology Today, in Women's World, the Washington Post, and the White House Blog. Christina created the Life Reentry process, which launched her on a mission to bring compassion, grace, and validation to thousands while simultaneously establishing an exit from what she termed the Waiting Room. During our conversation, Christina and I explored different aspects of invisible losses, discussing their origins and the transformative power of shifting one's mindset. We talked about letting go of shame and guilt, allowing one to rediscover one's true self. This shift in perspective can bring hope and inspiration to our lives.
I don't know about you, but I've learned that New Year's resolutions don't work well for me. Eat healthier, exercise more, and have more gratitude—those are the usual go-to's. Maybe it's my Midwestern stubbornness that makes me think, “Don't tell me what to do!” so I end up doing the opposite—eating more sugar, sleeping in instead of going for a run, and complaining more than feeling grateful. It's embarrassing to admit, but it's true. What I've found that works for me is to choose a word for the year, one that will guide me toward more adventure, joy, and truth. This year, my word is love.Today's guest on the Cracking Open podcast, Christina Rasmussen, embodies this word beautifully in her work, relationships, and teachings.Widowed at a young age, Christina was left managing the devastating loss of her partner while also raising their baby and toddler on her own. Initially, all Christina wanted to do was run away from her pain as far as possible, despite her master's degree in guidance and counseling. Four years after her 35-year-old husband passed away from Stage 4 colon cancer, she finally found the courage to confront her grief and created the Life Reentry process, which launched her on a mission to bring compassion, grace, and validation to thousands, while simultaneously establishing an exit from what she termed the Waiting Room.Christina has also published three bestselling books: Second Firsts in 2013, Where Did You Go? in 2018, and her most recent book published in 2024 - Invisible Loss. In this episode, you'll feel the love and wisdom Christina brings as she discusses the concept of “invisible losses”—experiences that are completely devastating yet often difficult to articulate. These losses can sometimes be more perplexing and challenging to navigate than the overt tragedies we face.Christina shares how to honor our invisible losses, using writing exercises she calls “cleanses” to move out of the “Waiting Room”—that place of uncertainty where we feel disconnected from our true selves. We also dive into identifying invisible losses and the three inner narratives we create as we process them: the survivor, the watcher, and the thrive. This episode is full of actionable tips and tools for navigating grief and honoring all the moments that crack us open in life. Christina reminds us that love is the best medicine—not just to heal grief but to embrace any experience that helps us grow.Christina is currently finishing her Master of Fine Arts degree in painting and drawing at the Academy of Art University. Her work on grief has been featured in The Guardian, Oprah Daily, ABC News, Women's World, The Washington Post, and the White House Blog. Transportation is the largest source of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions in the U.S., and makes up about a quarter of all energy-related GHG emissions in the world. Thus, we have ambitious goals when it comes to transportation, such as California's commitment to transition fully to electric vehicle sales by 2035. The U.S. bought over 1 million EVs through the end of 2023, which made almost 8% of all vehicles sold in the U.S. and 20% of auto sales in California. Globally, 9.5 million EVs were sold in 2023, a 31% increase from the prior year. But is this progress fast enough? In today's episode, we talk with Dr. Beia Spiller—Transportation Program Director at Resources for the Future (RFF), a nonprofit that conducts economic and policy research on topics including energy and transportation—about the current state and the future of electric transportation, the related equity and environmental justice challenges we face, and how we can rethink mobility. We then chat with Chris Merola, a film student at USC, and Beth Prakash, a new EV owner in the Bay Area (who is also a presentation designer, check out her website here!), to hear about their experiences driving an EV. You don't want to miss these conversations! 02:36 Interview with Dr. Spiller 33:35 Interview with Chris Merola 46:43 Interview with Beth Prakash 1:00:06 Concluding Remarks If you haven't already, please subscribe to our podcast so you can automatically get access to our new episodes – you can find us on Apple, Spotify, YouTube, or wherever you get your podcasts. Today’s guest is Negin Singh, the Founder and Artistic Director of cARTel: Collaborative Arts LA, and currently the Director of Inspiration (real title) for top Augmented Reality developer DAQRI. She’s been featured on the White House Blog, spoken for the big-wigs at places like NASA, and was named one of the top 30 Indian Entrepreneurs under 30 by India Current Magazine. If you’ve ever wanted to create something in your life – whether it’s theater, a business, a product, whatever – you KNOW how many hoops there are to jump through and how often it is that the good stuff never gets out into the world simply because people don’t have the resources or funds to let their extraordinary talent or vision live. As you’ll hear from Negin, cARTel was formed to solve that problem and take away those barriers that usually end up preventing really fantastic art from every even happening. They’ve put on critically acclaimed concerts, film festivals, circus and theater events, live radio shows, spoken word performances, art installations…most of which have been held in unexpected places like parks, vintage stories, pool parties, living rooms, and pretty much any place that’s anything BUT traditional. Back to DAQRI - if you're anything like me, you read the words "Augmented Reality" and thought...what? Basically, as Negin taught me, AR is where technology meets the “real world.” Think Google Glass and projects like that. The fact that Negin is the leader when it comes to creating such literally life-changing, visionary projects absolutely blows my mind. Negin is actually a friend of mine from college. I’ve had the honor of watching her grow and flourish for the last decade and completely shift the way others think about what it means to CREATE. What's more, is that every step of the way, she's championed other artists, other woman, and even when we were competing for the same roles, she never let me forget what a joy it was just to be "it it" together. In this episode, we talk about body image and fitness experiments, Negin’s tweendom in Dubai (and her most embarrassing childhood memory), capitalizing on what makes you different, recognizing your privilege, and how she turned her frustration with the system she was supposed to prescribe to into a movement so big that their annual music festival got called out by a certain “-chella” festival ;) We also talk about not fitting in, not following rules, and about how you really don’t have to have a degree or background in something in order to succeed at it. If you’re a creative of ANY type, you’ve ever felt different, or you’ve ever wondered how you’re going to get your message out into the world, I think you're going to really resonate with Episode 003.
If you have experienced devestating loss of any kind, this is an episode of Coach Cafe you want to be sure to listen to. Our guest this week, Christina Rasmussen, is a bestselling author, speaker and philanthropist on a crusade to change the way we live after loss. As the founder of Second First and Life Starters both organizations to help people create a pathway back to life after loss, Christina has helped thousands of people rebuild, reclaim, and relaunch their lives using the power of the human mind. Her book of the same name — Second Firsts: Live, Laugh, and Love Again— aims to take her message even further. Christina is the mother of two beautiful girls who watched their father die of cancer and saw their mother alchemize that tragedy into a new life of joy and laughter. Christina’s work has been featured on the Huffington Post, NPR, The Times of India, Beliefnet, The White House Blog, and MariaShriver.com. She is a Hay House author. Christina says this is about the work of Reentry. "If you're lost. . . if you're gone. . . if you can barely absorb the words on this screen. . . I want you to hold this truth in your heart: when it's your time to go, you won't wish you'd spent more time grieving — you'll wish you'd spent more time living."
