Sex and Beauty: The Extraordinary Implications of Darwin's Strangest Idea (Matt Ridley)

In all animals, mating is a deal. But few creatures behave as if sex is a simple, even mutually beneficial, transaction. Many more treat it with reverence, suspicion, angst, and violence. Matt Ridley revisits Darwin's revelatory theory of mate choice through the close study of the peculiar rituals of birds, and considers how this mating process complicates our own view of human evolution. Ridley also explores the scientific research into the evolution of bright colors, exotic ornaments, and elaborate displays in birds around the world. Charles Darwin thought the purpose of such displays was to “charm” females. Though Darwin's theory was initially dismissed and buried for decades, recent scientific research has proven him newly right—there is a powerful evolutionary force quite distinct from natural selection: mate choice. In Birds, Sex and Beauty, Ridley reopens the history of Darwin's vexed theory, laying bare a century of disagreement about an idea so powerful, so weird, and so wonderful, we may have yet to fully understand its implications. Matt Ridley is the bestselling author of The Rational Optimist and Viral: The Search for the Origin of COVID-19 (with Alina Chan). His books have sold over a million copies. Ridley served in the House of Lords from 2013 to 2021 and is a fellow of the Royal Society of Literature, the Academy of Medical Sciences, and an honorary member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences. His latest book is Birds, Sex and Beauty: The Extraordinary Implications of Charles Darwin's Strangest Idea.

A discussion with Matt Ridley on his book Viral: The Search for the Origin of COVID-19, written with Alina Chan, touches mostly on how the lab leak hypothesis is now an officially accepted explanation but how the mainstream media and academia are slow to admit it. The orthodoxy began with the excuse that they wanted to protect science, but they have done, and continue to do, the opposite.  Matt Ridley is an eminent science journalist. Writer of books "The Red Queen"; "Genome"; "How Innovation Works"; "The Evolution of Everything"; "The Origin of Virtue"; "Nature via Nature" and his latest "Viral: The Search for the Origins of Covid-19".  All are available on Amazon. His personal blog is here  Here, he also discusses the importance of "citizen journalists" and scientists in uncovering the suppression of evidence supporting the lab leak hypothesis of COVID-19.  Follow Matt on X @Mattwridley

More than four years after the pandemic began, a source for COVID-19 still eludes scientists and public health officials. The mystery has given rise to a slew of hypotheses ranging from natural zoonotic transmission to lab leaks. But to get to the bottom and find the real source of the virus, you have to start with the evidence. Alina Chan is a scientific advisor at the Broad Institute and the co-author of the book, Viral: The Search for the Origin of COVID-19. She and her co-author Matt Ridley follow one evidence thread to the next in order to get closer to the truth. Alina joins Greg to chat about the two dominant hypotheses on COVID-19's source, the challenges and methodology of identifying a virus' origin, and why it's crucial we find out where COVID-19 came from. *unSILOed Podcast is produced by University FM.*Episode Quotes:The debate over studying high-risk pathogens43:50: There are definitely people who think that all of this research should be banned, but I think that there should be a certain amount allowed to continue. Again, this sort of research, where there's actually any pandemic risk, constitute an extremely small fraction of virology. So, I would say, like, less than even a percent, maybe even less than that. So, most virology doesn't even concern animal viruses. And those that do often do not pose a risk to cause outbreaks in people. But there are these types of research projects that are now becoming more and more trendy around the world, following in the footsteps of U.S. leaders to take these pathogens that could cause outbreaks in people and study them in the labs. And it's unclear where the risk is because some of these labs are doing it at such low biosafety levels. Or is it because there are so many of these high-biosafety labs now, and the work is increasing, yet in these labs there's still room for human error.Public vs. scientists51:56: Your political affiliation doesn't determine anymore whether you think this virus was natural or came through a lab. I would say that the difference between the public and scientists is that scientists, especially experts, tend to lean on priors very heavily, as well as peer-reviewed literature. Is the focus on avoiding retroactive blame or preventing future research constraints?43:03: I think it's both. So, since then, and over the past few years, you've seen so many letters by virologists. Dozens of them have signed letters saying we are totally fine in the U.S. We do not need any more oversight or regulation. We are good at self-auditing and self-inspecting. We don't need any external oversight over our work. So, there's a clear fear amongst virologists that if this pandemic was started by a lab accident in Wuhan, they would become constrained as well, and that people would also perceive them to no longer just be the good guys but to be a source of risk and danger. Why bats carry so many viruses24:45: I think bats, aside from humans, are probably the most interesting mammalian species out there for virologists. It's because these bats have been found to carry so many different types of pathogens, many of which can jump into people. So, like Ebola, coronaviruses, both MERS and SARS were found to have come from reservoirs, for example, but they're quite similar to humans in the context that they live in large groups. So, you go into one of these caves, easily millions of bats in there, but actually, they're quite different. So, they can fly, and so their body has to adapt to handle that really high heat that happens when you're flapping your wings at such a high speed. And that is related to traits in bats that help them to coexist with so many of these viruses. So, these viruses, while they cause very severe diseases in people, in bats, they just live mostly in the gut and don't cause any severe disease. So, bats have this invulnerability in a sense to all these very dangerous pathogens.Show Links:Recommended Resources:Dr. Peter Daszak - EcoHealth Alliance Wuhan institute of VirologyRalph S. In early June, Dr. Alina Chan published an essay in The New York Times arguing what the media once considered a conspiracy: Covid-19 originated in the Wuhan lab. The essay made waves on social media. To some, it was a breath of fresh air from the intelligentsia that validated long-held beliefs about where the costliest pandemic in modern history started. But to others, like our other guest today, it was irresponsible and scientifically misleading. Dr. John Moore is a prominent virologist and professor at Cornell University's Weill Medical College. He penned a rebuttal for “The Nation” in which he argued that The New York Times is badly failing their readers on Covid by publishing Chan's argument. Chan is not a virologist; she's a molecular biologist at Harvard and MIT's Broad Institute. Early on in the pandemic, however, she took an interest in understanding the origins of Covid. She then published a book about lab leak that she claims drew the ire of the media and scientific establishment. In this episode of We The 66, we share BOTH of their perspectives.

When we first started our podcast in the spring of 2015, Jim and Richard came from different political tribes. They still do. But during more than 400 shows they've deepened their friendship and learned a tremendous amount from each other, and our remarkable guests. While "How Do We Fix It?" podcast will continue its journey, Jim and Richard's nine years as co-hosts ends with this show. We discuss why the partnership is ending (spoiler alert: it's amicable!) and what they discovered about podcasting, politics, and how to navigate divisions at a time of rigid, painful divides."I feel like when we started, we were a couple of voices in the wilderness, searching for more open-minded conversations, looking for people willing to grapple with facts and ideas that don't fit their comfortable world views," says Jim."One of our last-minute decisions in those early days was to add a question mark to our title," says Richard. "I'm so glad we decided to do that, because fixing the current political mess starts with better listening and more challenging questions."In the years since we started our voices have grown into a movement. Some call it the bridging space with organizations such as Braver Angels, Heterodox Academy, Living Room Conversations, Listen First, Solutions Journalism Network, Common Ground Committee and many more. Media have also changed with the huge growth of podcasting, Substack, and new news sites such as The Free Press. We've enjoyed hearing from a remarkable range of guests. Among the most successful and persuasive experts are humble about their own opinions and accomplishments. They've been open-minded and curious about the views of those who sharply, and sometimes dismissively, disagreed with them. Standout examples include scientist Alina Chan, journalist and author Jonathan Rausch, writer and podcast host Yascha Mounk, and Moni Guzman of Braver Angels. In this episode Richard and Jim get personal and a bit emotional about where they've changed their minds and personally learned from each other. Sam Harris is the subject today and a man who needs no introduction. Although he's come up and he's come on, we've never actually (technically) decoded him. There is no Gurometer score! A glaring omission and one that needs correcting. It would have been easy for us to cherry-pick Sam being extremely good on conspiracy theories, or extremely controversial on politics, but we felt that neither would be fair. So we opted for a general and broad-ranging recent interview he did with Chris Williamson. Love him or loathe him, it's a representative piece of Sam Harris content, and therefore good material for us.Sam talks about leaving Twitter, and how transformative that was for his life, then gets into his favourite topic: Buddhism, consciousness, and living in the moment. That's the kind of spiritual kumbaya topics that Sam reports causing him little pain online but Chris and Matt- the soulless physicalists and p-zombies that they are- seek to destroy even that refuge. On the other hand, they find themselves determined by the very forces of the universe to nod their meat puppet heads in furious agreement as Sam discusses the problems with free speech absolutism and reactionary conspiracism. That's just a taste of what's to come in this extra-ordinarily long episode to finish off the year. What's the DTG take? You'll have to listen to find out all the details, but we do think there is some selective interpretation of religions at hand and some gut reactions to wokeness that leads to some significant blindspots. So is Sam Harris an enlightened genius, a neo-conservative warmonger, a manipulative secular guru? Or is he, in the immortal words of Gag Halfrunt, Zaphod Beeblebrox's head specialist, "just zis guy, you know?".Sam was DTG's white whale of 2023, but we'll let you be the judge as to whether or not we harpooned him, or whether he's swimming off contentedly, unscathed, into the open ocean.LinksSam Harris - Take Back Control Of Your Mind (4K) | Modern Wisdom 661DTG Special Episode: Sam Harris & Meditation is all you needDTG Special: Interview with Sam Harris on Gurus, Tribalism & the Culture WarDTG Special Episode: Interview with Evan Thompson on Buddhist ExceptionalismDTG Interview with Worobey, Andersen & Holmes: The Lab LeakMaking Sense 311: Did SARS-CoV-2 Escape from a Lab? The real reason for spiritual and consciousness maturation that we are destined to learn from this theatre nonsense in early 2020. What tools I use when I'm overwhelmed and stressed. How to bulletproof your mind against amygdala hijacking.   [02:10] COMMUNISM + MIND CONTROL TACTICS Now look, I know it's a touchy subject for media, and probably many are exhausted with this conversation about the pandemic and lockdowns and masks and jabs and medical freedom and Gestapo mind control from the media and the government but this is something that we need to and we must and we get to explore. Otherwise, our children and our children's children will pay the price. Somewhere in your subconscious mind, there's probably already a question why should I listen to josh for the next 10 minutes? Well, I will tell you, because I've spent the past two years just like you, experiencing the nuclear fallout from an economic, mental health, the community split by the acts of what I believe is communism and mind control tactics by the most elite of the elite, who essentially run the world. I'm talking about the powers that be behind closed doors at Vanguard and BlackRock capital. I'm talking about $20 trillion that is managed by Vanguard and BlackRock and probably a lot more that just isn't showing publicly. All you have to do, and don't worry you won't go down the rabbit hole today and there's no tinfoil hat needed, is make the connections between the two largest capital firms in the entire planet, literally in the history of humanity, this much wealth has never been held by such few people. Now, the free market capitalist inside of you and inside of me is celebrating when people succeed, but there is a limit to the succession of financial gain when it comes to creating scarcity and fear, and pain for others. What do I mean by this? Let's dig in. All of the money in the world can be funneled into and out of the largest capital firms like Vanguard, and BlackRock, traced to, and from the federal reserve, which is a private company that is for profit which most people get wrong, and of course, traced to the United States federal government, and then that is where all the money supposedly gets applied to state and local city governments. But you and I both know if you've ever gone to get a driver's license or registration or a permit that the existential energy and every single office whether at a local city or federal level has a flavor doesn't it? It has a flavor of lies and frustration, like an existential pressure that we all can feel whenever we step foot into a government or authority organization. Now the father in me knows that order and structure, and a framework for chaos, which is life is necessary. But you and I also both know that too much structure allows for no flow and no energy to move from point a to point B. In other words, too much control given to too few people will ultimately yield corruption and that is exactly what we are seeing with the financial system. Make sure that you listen to the episode with Robert Breedlove, where he does an incredible job, breaking down the financial system, and the rise of cryptocurrency it is a master class on financial wellness. It's very important for you to listen to this episode.   [05:40] WHY THE TRUTH IS BEING HIDDEN FROM US Now back to the crime of the century. The reason we had to talk about money before that is because money created this CV!9 theater. Period and stop. If you look at the YouTube video interview with Jordan Peterson and Matt Ridley, the author of Viral: The Search For The Origin Of CV!9, titled The Origin Of CV!9, you will learn from the most accurate and observational research of the data that mainstream media is not sharing that there is a smoking gun when it comes to the Chinese communist party and their involvement in the leaking out of this virus that caused so much death and destruction and mind control. And emails now exposed the head of the NIH, the National Institute of Health is quoted: “We can't damage international harmony, we mustn't dampen the reputation of Chinese science.” And this, my friend, is the smoking gun, the Wuhan CV!9 research lab in China. Still to this day, has not released their files about what viruses they were working on at the time of the leak and the outbreak. When the Chinese lab was confronted by the United States government to release their records, they were told no. If this isn't the biggest smoking gun, that should allow natural sacred anger and sacred rage to come forth from you and I and us as a collective, then nothing ever will. What we have gone through over the past 2 and a half years is a vile and disgusting cover-up, to which there may never be forgiveness and tell the truth is exposed. Matt really continues to share with us through his research that conversations were controlled by the communist party in China here in America and censorship that was funded by. The CCP has been rolling out ever since the leak. Now I'm sure this episode is going to get flagged whenever you mention CCP or China or BlackRock or any of the terms I'm talking about automatically the technocrat agencies will flag this episode as a controversy or that you don't have the responsibility in your own mind to protect yourself against me. So they are going to place a huge blue or green or black label on this continent where you're listening or watching it to “keep you safe” and isn't that so disgusting that these technocrat agencies don't believe in you, they don't believe in your own agency and filter of information so they slap warnings on contact like this to “keep you safe “which is essentially hidden censorship. It should not surprise you by now, but there is a silver lining in this, which I will get to you in a moment.   [09:23] CV!9: A POLITICAL DISTRACTION? Essentially, what has been happening is that all media has been controlled and the entire Plandemic was used as a political distraction tool to divide people into pro-mask or anti-mask, pro job or anti-jab pro BLM or anti-BLM and it's all a fucking joke and a fucking lie and you and I both know it. This is divisional language 101. If you look at military tactics of war, the very first thing you do is that you put sides against each other then you confuse them, then you take away their resources, then you control the world and all of its people. Is it so hard to believe that at the highest level your attention is being controlled which will lead to the choices that disempower you and disenfranchise you from your very own freedom? This is why billions of minds were broken because the truth will set us free but in order to have freedom we must have freedom of press and freedom of speech which you and I both know absolutely was under siege over the past 2 and a half years and even more aggressively so now, which is why we're here on this podcast to get the mental physical, emotional, spiritual and financial truth about how we can support our wellness. And wellness starts in the body and in the mind. Head over to the show notes page JoshTrent.com/501 if you want to get all the links and resources and dive much deeper with me into this topic let's move on because I promised you we would get into five core aspects that you can use to bulletproof your mind about anything similar that may happen in the future so let's continue.   [10:55] THE ILLUSION OF SEPARATION So why is this all happening? Let's take a deep breath. I believe this is happening because we are in need of a collective and an individual wake-up call. The quote by Aristotle that Alan Watts has been very famous for is that nature abhors a vacuum. Nature hates a vacuum. Well, the vacuum that is being pulled on us by the media, and by those at the highest levels of power is sucking away our sovereignty and our individuality through the lens of “it's for your safety. The real reason for this pandemic and of this insanity is that we have to crack open so that light can pour out of us and into us. We are living as Paul Levy my guest on episode 503 next week will share in a collective dream. We will go much deeper into this topic next week, which I know you would love. The collective dream is that we are separate. We believe this dream of illusion that there is such a difference between the hearts in our chests, in the air that we breathe and the emotions that we all feel. We are taught that we are separate, but we are not. We are absolutely not separate. We never have been, and we never will be. So in order to come to the truth, we have to experience the vacuum the contrast, the darkness, the opposite of love. I don't know why God made it this way my friend, it makes me sad at times and it's definitely a spiritual maturation process for me to accept, but it is what it is and so what do we do about it now? You've heard me say many times since interviewing my friend and mentor Scott Jackson that we are at cause, but being at cause does not always mean that we are at fault. But it is with our compliance and our talking detail between her legs and wearing the masks and getting the jobs and following orders and hoping it will all go away… This is what perpetuates the darkness and perpetuates the attacks on the mind.   [13:08] STEPS TO BULLETPROOF YOUR MIND So let's talk about how to bulletproof the mind so you can be free of this control, tactic by the media and the highest elite power. The very first thing you must do is to place your phone on “do not disturb.” I know it's a very simple thing, but place your phone on do not disturb, next have specific times that you check social media. Once, twice, maybe three times a day, or just have specific days that you check social media. Next, and this is very very important, whenever you see something on your Instagram Facebook, social media feeds, or news and it makes you feel fear and you'll know you're feeling fear because your prefrontal cortex will shut down and you'll start feeling anger or sadness or rage, immediately unfollow, block, and hide the source that showed you the main control message. I'm talking about CNB, CMS, MBC, Fox, CBC, BCBBB, whatever the acronyms are it doesn't even matter. Any major news outlet – immediately unfollow it. There are only five news outlets globally, and they hide behind subsidiaries. And if you don't believe me just do a quick Google search or search on YouTube for the video titled “This Is Extremely Dangerous to Our Democracy” and you'll see what I mean. It's also in the show notes at JoshTrent.com/501.   [14:40] TAKING CARE OF YOUR BODY TO STRENGTHEN YOUR MIND Next, if you want to bulletproof your mind, you have to care and love for your body. Now look you don't need to buy anything for this but if you have income that you're spending on alcohol, drugs or partying, or anything else that is taking you away from your physical sovereignty I want you to listen really really closely here. JoshTrent.com/Store it's really serious and meaningful to me. I've worked very hard to get the deepest discounts possible to get you all the tools that will fuel and support your physical mental emotional, spiritual and financial health so you can be well and when you're well you're less controllable when you're healthy, you're less controllable. There's two specific products I want you to use. The first one is the Upbeat from Nootopia, and the second one is the Kanna or the MesemBright from LiftMode. Both of these are built to support your new chemistry and make your mind and your nervous system strong. When you combine that with your discipline of putting your phone on “do not disturb” and hiding the fear-based news, you were going to be rock-solid, my friend that is my promise. Another way that you can bulletproof yourself is through breathwork and meditation. As you know, I absolutely love breathwork. It is a core part of my life and you can join me in a three-week program titled Breathe: Breath & Wellness. The new year is coming. It's a perfect time for you to join me in the program you can go to breathwork.io and use the code “PODCAST25” to get 25% off the Breathe: Breath & Wellness program in that program will talk about the many layers you can put into place right away to make you bulletproof physically and mentally from this mind control from the media by just using your breath in the most intelligent way. That's breathwork.io. Use the code “PODCAST25” to support and nourish yourself through your breath. I really like the MitoZen Nasal Spray. It has got oxytocin and Hape. It's very calming. I use it in the evenings to connect with my partner or if I'm feeling stressed. Here's the key if you feel like you're out of your body, you most likely are, and when you're out of your body, your prefrontal cortex is shut down. So when you spray the oxytocin and the Hape into your sinuses, you come back into your body. The prefrontal cortex starts to come back online and you're actually yourself again you can go to JoshTrent.com/MitoZen and use the code “WELLNESSFORCE” to get 15% off the oxytocin and Hape Zen nasal spray. Now look again, you don't have to buy any of these things. I just love them I use them myself and thousands of people in our Wellness + Wisdom Community have purchased them and use them as well so I think they will really really help you.   [17:55] SPARKING MEANINGFUL CONVERSATIONS And I trust that this podcast lit a fire inside of your heart to motivate you to dig deeper in 2023 and have this conversation at the holiday table or with a friend or with a family member who just simply does not know. Maybe they're unconsciously incompetent about it, in other words, they don't even know they don't know this can be your special moment to connect with a friend or a family member that you haven't connected with for a long time and make it a meaningful conversation. Please, share this podcast with someone who literally does not know that they don't know share this crime of the century how this CV!9 theater broke billions of minds and how we can heal collectively. Everything today's at JoshTrent.com/501 from my heart to yours thank you for being here please share this podcast. Please leave us a review at JoshTrent.com/Review. It helps the show expand and rise in the algorithms and I appreciate you being here with me. There's a reason you found me, there's a reason you feel this, there's a reason that we spent time together today, and I'm grateful for that reason. Make sure you tune in next week to episode 503 with Paul Levy talking about Wetiko, the mind virus. On this episode, we talk with Alina Chan, postdoc at the Broad Institute of MIT and Harvard and co-author with Matt Ridley of Viral: The Search for the Origin of COVID-19. SARS-CoV-2 could have plausibly jumped into humans in Wuhan via one of two paths. The first is zoonotic transfer from wild bats to humans, possibly via an intermediate animal host. The second is some kind of lab accident: researchers working on a SARS-CoV-2-like virus accidentally became infected with it and then transmitted it to others in Wuhan. Although early discussions among virologists reached the consensus that the origin was almost surely zoonotic, more recent discussions have started to take the lab-leak theory seriously. Unfortunately, we still lack conclusive evidence in support of either hypothesis. And, as public leaders have co-opted the investigation for nonscientific reasons, the subject of COVID's origin has become practically taboo. Alina's approach is to “follow the data,” leaving no stone unturned, and we believe that it is our responsibility as scientists to do the same. We talk to Alina about her book, as well as the many new things that have been revealed about COVID's origins since its 2021 publication. Towards the end of the chat, we discuss the implications of what we've learned about SARS-CoV-2 for how we should prepare for and deal with future pandemics. We hope that this episode inspires you to seek the best possible explanation of COVID origins. Ep. 29 | Covid 19 and the Chinese Virus Laboratory

In the early days of the pandemic a lot of attention was paid to the fact that the Chinese city of Wuhan, from which the virus emerged, contained a biological research laboratory that had been experimenting with coronaviruses. But this was met by political and scientific reassurance that the virus was more likely the result of an evolutionary leap and had spread via a food market. Those who persisted with the laboratory hypothesis were criticised for being anti-Chinese or 'conspiracy theorists' and their views were largely excluded from mainstream media reporting and ‘flagged' as outliers on social media sites. The fact that President Trump, who had been pushing strange ‘cures' for Covid, also entertained the lab-leak theory, made many of his opponents feel it was probably incorrect. This week's guest, journalist Matt Ridley wasn't so sure, and he set about with a co-author, molecular biologist, Alina Chan, to investigate. Their 2021 book ‘Viral' laid out the case for and against the lab leak theory in great detail.Meanwhile the administration of President Biden started to review the evidence, as a series of scientific and congressional inquiries put ‘lab escape' back on the mainstream news agenda. Today more and more experts are entertaining it.So what's the real evidence - and could it be that political bias may have stopped us looking dispassionately at the cause of greatest public health emergency of the century? You can buy Matt Ridley's book - and thousands more - from the Scandal Mongers own online bookstore - part of a profit-sharing collaboration between podcasters and independent book stories. https://uk.bookshop.org/p/books/viral-the-search-for-the-origin-of-covid-19-alina-chan/6158390?aid=12054&ean=9780008487492Andrew Lownie.twitter.com/andrewlowniePhil Craig.twitter.com/philmcraigYou can also get in touch with the shows hosts via...team@podcastworld.org (place 'Scandal Mongers' in the heading please)This show is part of the PodcastWorld.org network. In their book Viral: The Search for the Origin of COVID-19, they detail the history of coronavirus research at the Wuhan Institute of Virology, as well as the cover-up that followed the COVID-19 outbreak in Wuhan. In our conversation with them, Chan and Ridley explained the professional risks they took to pursue this line of inquiry. “For Alina, this took huge courage,” Ridley said. “She's at the start of a brilliant scientific career at a brilliant institution, and she had to be really tough. It's a remarkable story of human courage.”As the lab leak theory becomes more widely discussed and accepted, much of Chan and Ridley's work has been vindicated. In February 2023, FBI Director Chris Wray told Fox News, “The FBI has for quite some time now assessed that the origins of the pandemic are most likely a potential lab incident.” The Energy Department released a low-confidence report with a similar conclusion, and just last week, the head of China's CDC said that a lab leak should not be ruled out. So how did the media and the scientific community get the COVID origins debate so wrong?

“The trust we have in each other and in our institutions is a measure of social health around the world.”, Todd Rose Die Kompetenz heutiger (wissenschaftlicher) Eliten waren ebenfalls in früheren Episoden ein Thema. In this episode, Chan says that more than three years after the start of the pandemic, there still has been “no credible investigation” of the origins of Covid, the continuing resistance among some scientists for a full investigation, the key role that Twitter has played in the investigation, and her views on the wet market,  lockdowns, masks, and Anthony Fauci, and why she's still pushing for a full investigation. (Recorded April 3, 2023.)

The question of the SARS-CoV-2 origin: whether it was a zoonotic spillover from a wet market, or an engineered virus that escaped from the Wuhan Institute of Virology, is seemingly a debate that will never go away. Most interestingly, while scientists with specific domain expertise seem to be building a consensus towards the former, public opinion appears to be trending towards the latter. This delta between expert and popular opinion has been helped along by the frothy discourse in mainstream and social media, with most figures that we cover in this podcast dead-set certain that it came from a lab. Most recently, Sam Harris hosted on his Making Sense podcast the molecular biologist Alina Chan and. science writer Matt Ridley, spokespersons for the lab leak case, and authors of "Viral: The Search for the Origin of COVID-19". To a layperson, and certainly to Sam, they put forward a rather watertight case. Intrinsic to the arguments advanced were the ideas that (a) experts in the area were refusing to engage with and unable to answer their arguments, and (b) a strong implication that there is a conspiracy of silence among virologists not just in China but internationally, to suppress the lab leak hypothesis. So, as a case study in the public understanding of science, it seems like a pretty pickle indeed. To help unravel the pickle(?) in this somewhat special episode, we are joined by three virologists who are amply qualified to address the topic; both in terms of the evidence and whether they are involved in a conspiracy of silence.Kristian Andersen is a Professor in the Department of Immunology and Microbiology at Scripps Research. He focuses on the relationship between host and pathogen, using sequencing, fieldwork, experimentation, and computational biology methods. He has spearheaded large international collaborations investigating the emergence, spread and evolution of deadly pathogens, including SARS-CoV-2, Zika virus, Ebola virus, West Nile virus, and Lassa virus.Prof Michael Worobey, is the head of the department of Ecology and Evolutionary Biology at the University of Arizona. His work focuses on the genomes of viruses, using molecular and computational biology, to understand the origins, emergence and control of pandemics. Recently, his interdisciplinary work on SARS-CoV-2 has shed light on how and when the virus originated and ignited the COVID-19 pandemic in China and how SARS-CoV-2 emerged and took hold in North America and Europe.Prof Edward "Eddie" Holmes, is an NHMRC Leadership Fellow & Professor of Virology at the Faculty of Medicine and Health at Sydney University, a member of the Sydney Institute for Infectious Diseases, a Fellow of the Australian Academy of Science and a Fellow of The Royal Society. He is known for his work on the evolution and emergence of infectious diseases, particularly the mechanisms by which RNA viruses jump species boundaries to emerge in humans and other animals. He has studied the emergence and spread of such pathogens as SARS-CoV-2, influenza virus, dengue virus, HIV, hepatitis C virus, myxoma virus, RHDV and Yersinia pestis. All three researchers have specialist expertise and decades of experience directly applicable to tracking viruses and their adaption to humans, and, fair to say, are fairly eminent in their fields (Eddie in particular!). Further, they are among the relatively small set of researchers collecting and analysing primary evidence on the origins of SARS-CoV-2, communicating their findings in top-ranked journals, including Nature and Science. In this episode, Chris and Matt put to this trio of Professors the claims rasied by lab leak advocates to see what these (damn conspirators) experts have to say for themselves.LinksSam Harris Making Sense

Megyn Kelly begins the show with a deep dive into the origins of COVID-19 - was it from a lab leak, or from nature? On one side is Tulane virologist Dr. Robert Garry, who discusses why he says science points to COVID-19 originating from nature, the importance of the furin cleavage site, what was actually happening at the Wuhan lab, the experimentation with gain-of-function research, why Garry originally said it was not natural then changed mind, his personal conversations with Dr. Collins and Dr. Fauci, why he believes the wildlife market caused the "spillover," and more. Then Dr. Alina Chan, molecular biologist and MIT and Harvard scientific advisor, joins to discuss why she says science points to a leak from the Wuhan lab as the origin of COVID, what the reversal by scientists shows, the lack of transparency about the process, why Fauci and Collins would have wanted to clamp down on the lab leak theory, lack of evidence for both natural and lab origins, China's ongoing blame game, scientific naivete, why there might be suppression of data that could tell us more about the origins, and more. How do you tell the difference between truth and lies? The answer involves a careful process of seeking knowledge that may contradict our long held beliefs. In this episode, our hosts share two conversations with expert guests who changed Jim and Richard's minds about how they approach topics central to our understanding of politics, science, and society.Journalist and scholar Jonathan Rauch is the author of the best-selling book, "The Constitution of Knowledge". He makes a stirring case for the social system of checks and balances used by scientists, lawyers, business leaders, and researchers to turn disagreements into verifiable facts. Alina Chan is a Canadian molecular biologist specializing in gene therapy and cell engineering at the Broad Institute of MIT and Harvard, where she is a postdoctoral fellow. Chan is the co-author of "Viral: The Search for the Origin of COVID-19."When she and several other scientists raised the possibility that the SARS CoV2 could have escaped from a lab, Chan's research was dismissed by many leading scientists and mainstream journalists. Some declared that her work was "a conspiracy theory." But Chan continues to ask crucial questions. The world needs to know the true origins of the pandemic in order to prevent the next dangerous virus from causing a future pandemic. A full and open investigation was never done. Both of our interviews underline the need for nuance, curiosity and open-minded approaches to the world's great problems. The "global network of people hunting for each others' errors is far and away the greatest technology ever invented," Rauch tells us. The constitution of knowledge, he says, "is a global conversation of people looking for truth, and more especially, looking for error."Recommendation: Richard is reading "Broken News" by political journalist Chris Stirewalt. This new book provides a crisp, passionate, well-judged argument of how the media rage machine divides America. Reporters in newsrooms are incentivized to write news stories that are full of emotion and anger. These reports very often get the most clicks and social media attention. This emphasis on anger and rage has polluted journalism, Stirewalt argues. Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.

I'll be posting about one of these a week for several months. When you've read them all, I'll ask you to vote for a favorite, so remember which ones you liked - SA] Introduction   Alina Chan and Matt Ridley's Viral is a book about the investigation into the origins of the COVID-19 pandemic. In case you haven't been following, there's been a shift in the scientific consensus on this topic. For about the first year of the pandemic, it was widely accepted that SARS-CoV-2, the virus behind COVID-19, had a natural origin, meaning that it first spread to humans naturally from an animal (also called a zoonotic origin). Any suggestion that it could have come from a lab was dismissed as a conspiracy theory. Then, sometime around spring 2021 something changed. Well-known, respected scientists began to voice the opinion that SARS-CoV-2 might have come from a lab, or that it's at least a plausible hypothesis that deserves an investigation. The scientific consensus abruptly shifted from “definitely natural origin” to “both natural origin and lab origin are viable hypotheses that should be investigated.” Viral is a deep dive into this issue from all angles, covering the basics of virology, the history and epidemiology of the COVID-19 pandemic, the response of scientific and governmental institutions, and various pieces of evidence for both hypotheses. It doesn't contain any new, bombshell revelations, but it's a neat, accessible summary of the scattered bits of information that have been uncovered since the start of the pandemic. In this review I'll try to distill some of the most important information and discuss my own interpretation of it.  I enjoyed the book and recommend it to anyone interested in the topic. However, many of the authors' points (especially on technical issues) have counterpoints from other scientists who lean more heavily towards the natural origins hypothesis. So I think it's best to include the book as part of a “package-deal” recommendation, rather than presenting it as a perfectly objective source. The last section of this review will include some more recommended sources to check out, including writing from advocates of the natural origins hypothesis with counterpoints to claims made in the book. I'll also link one here in case you don't make it that far. In my view, the book actually deals with two separate topics. The first is the object-level question – where did COVID come from? The second is the meta-level question – what can we say about the ability and willingness of different institutions to answer the question of the pandemic's origins?

This episode is about environmental alarmism. Alarmism means exaggerating danger and thereby causing needless worry or panic. These days the media is flooded with proclamations and predictions of ecological catastrophe. There is no doubt that our environmental challenges are many, and huge, and they certainly do present dangers. But are they being seen in the context of broader developmental challenges and associated trade-offs? Or in the context of humankind's past achievements, and our ability to adapt? And is alarmist rhetoric the best way to motivate action to deal with them? Among the people offering answers to questions like these, is this month's guest on The Case for Conservation Podcast, Matt Ridley.Matt was, until he retired last year, an elected member of the UK Parliament's House of Lords. (The Origins Podcast will appear every other Thursday.) Matt Ridley is a veteran journalist and science writer, with a training in genetics. He is also a Conservative member of the House of Lords in the UK. Matt and I were able to discuss his training, and his move from scientist to journalist, as well as the spectrum of his experiences in his various roles. We then moved on to the centerpiece of our dialogue: His newest book, Viral, written with geneticist Alina Chan. Together they produced what I view to be a masterpiece of science writing and detective work, exploring the origins of Covid-19. Our discussion, like the book, allowed us to illustrate a lot of the science related to the virus, and the current pandemic. There are numerous surprises. One of the most remarkable was the realization that much of the important detective work uncovering the possible origin of the pandemic came from self-trained internet sleuths who were able to uncover masters theses, as well as online registries that had either not been referenced in the professional literature, or incorrectly referenced. One comes away from the discussion with the realization that we still do not know for certain the origin of Covid-19, in spite of claims to the contrary. Recent, highly publicized scientific articles suggesting the Wuhan Seafood Market as the origin still have to deal with the fact that no direct evidence of the virus has yet to be uncovered from any of the animals at the market. At the same time, there is clear evidence that the Wuhan Virology Institute was working on Covid viruses, including viruses from bats that had caused Covid-like symptoms coming from a cave located far away in China. Neither Ridley nor Chan advocate any particular scenario for the current outbreak. But it is clear that open, transparent discussion of the available evidence is very important if the world is to understand better how this pandemic started, and how to possibly head off, or prepare for the next one. I found our discussion, and the book, incredibly informative, and Matt is a lucid and experienced explicator of both science, and social issues. In February 2020, The Lancet, a leading British medical journal, published a statement by more than two dozen scientists condemning the hypothesis that COVID-19 had leaked from a Chinese lab — effectively halting scientific inquiry along those lines. But a handful of researchers refused to rule out the so-called “lab-leak” theory and soon found themselves shunned and ostracized by their colleagues.Alina Chan, a molecular biologist and then-postdoctoral fellow at the Broad Institute of MIT and Harvard, was one such researcher. This week on Banished, host Amna Khalid talks with Chan about the politicization of science.More from Booksmart Studios: This is a public episode. Finding out where it came from and how it first jumped into people is an urgent priority, but early expectations that this would prove an easy question to answer have been dashed. Today's guest is molecular biologist Dr. Alina Chan, a fellow at the Broad Institute and co-author of Viral: The Search for the Origin of Covid-19. She has been one of the most prominent commentators on the origins of COVID-19 and has attracted controversy for encouraging more serious consideration of the possibility that the pandemic began through an accident at a virology lab. She has been credited for changing the discussion about the issue and causing scientists and the media to pay more attention to the possibility of a lab accident than they were previously. In this episode we discuss:- The various possible ways the pandemic could have begun and why "lab leak" and "natural origin" can be somewhat misleading terms- How the politicization of the debate has gotten in the way of having a serious discussion about the facts, since the right is committed to the lab hypothesis and the left does not want to consider a hypothesis that the right is so committed to- What the actual evidence we currently have is (not much)- How investigations into COVID-19's origins have been compromised- What the stakes of finding the truth are, and how people's worldviews and narratives are threatened by conclusions they don't like- What a "lab accident" would look like and why it could easily come from well-intentioned research intending to stop pandemics, rather than nefarious attempts to manufacture a bioweaponThe articles in the Los Angeles Times and Science suggesting that the virus is unlikely to have been released from a lab are here and here. Nathan's own article on the origins of COVID-19 is here.

A new virus descended on the human species in 2019 wreaking unprecedented havoc. Finding out where it came from and how it first jumped into people is an urgent priority, but early expectations that this would prove an easy question to answer have been dashed. Nearly two years into the pandemic, the crucial mystery of the origin of SARS-CoV-2 is not only unresolved but has deepened. In this conversation based on the uniquely insightful book, Viral: The Search for the Origin of COVID-19, Matt Ridley reviews how he and his co-author Alina Chan have tried to get to the bottom of how a virus whose closest relations live in bats in subtropical southern China somehow managed to begin spreading among people more than 1,500 kilometers away in the city of Wuhan. They grapple with the baffling fact that the virus left none of the expected traces that such outbreaks usually create: no infected market animals or wildlife, no chains of early cases in travelers to the city, no smoldering epidemic in a rural area, no rapid adaptation of the virus to its new host — human beings. To try to solve this pressing mystery, Ridley delves deep into the events of 2019 leading up to 2021, the details of what went on in animal markets and virology laboratories, the records and data hidden from sight within archived Chinese theses and websites, and the clues that can be coaxed from the very text of the virus's own genetic code.

How Do We Fix It?

A crucial step in preventing the next global pandemic will be knowing where this one came from. Did SARS-CoV-2— the virus that causes Covid-19— jump from animals to humans, or was the outbreak the result of a lab leak? The world still doesn't know the answer. This episode is part two of our wide-ranging interview with Alina Chan, a postdoctoral scientist who co-wrote an explosive online paper in May 2020. She argued that scientists and governments should investigate whether a virus from a laboratory in Wuhan, China caused the pandemic.“It's not about holding one country accountable, because we are all accountable for this,” Alina tells us. “We're all in this together.”In this episode, we discuss the need for much greater transparency when viral outbreaks occur. The world needs to adopt new policies and strategies to prevent or mitigate future outbreaks. Proposed solutions include: more regulation of scientific experiments— including “gain of function” research, better lab safety standards, greater international oversight of groups that study how viruses cross species barriers, and a global treaty governing viral research.Alina Chan co-wrote “Viral” with British science writer Matt Ridley. “Unfortunately, there are no enforceable international biosafety and biosecurity standards,” they write. Their newly-published book has prompted further controversy and pushback from some well-known scientists. We think a full airing of the questions raised by Dr. Chan's research is central to our mission at “How Do We Fix It?”Recommendation: Jim is reading "In the Heart of The Sea: The Tragedy of the Whaleship Essex”, by history writer Nathaniel Philbrick. Two years after the known human case of COVID-19, the mystery of the origin of SARS-CoV-2 remains unresolved. Did the virus emerge from an animal in nature, or could it have accidentally leaked from a research lab in Wuhan, China? Shockingly, the world appears to be no closer to knowing the crucial answer. In this first of two episodes, we get a brief explanation of the growing controversy from our co-host, Jim Meigs, who has written about allegations of a scientific cover-up. Molecular biologist Alina Chan, a postdoctoral fellow in a gene therapy lab at the Broad Institute, is our interview guest.Dr. Chan first became widely known last year for suggesting that COVID-19 could have escaped from a laboratory. Her early research was called a "conspiracy theory" by leading scientists and mainstream media journalists. But in recent months, expert views of this mystery have decisively changed.Alina Chan and British science writer Matt Ridley — a past guest on How Do We Fix It? — are the co-authors of the new book, "Viral: The Search for the Origin of COVID-19." Our next episode will include part two of our interview with Alina Chan. We believe that finding the answer to how this virus first spread will be a vital part of preventing the next pandemic. On this week's #SWYSI we are joined by Matt (Lord) Ridley, the distinguished journalist and businessman best known for his articles and books on science, the environment and economics. In this episode he discusses his important new book: "Viral: The Search for the Origin of Covid-19" To quote from the book's description: "Understanding how Covid-19 started is more important than we know for the future of humankind. Determining whether the virus came from nature or from a lab will help us to safeguard against the next pandemic. "This disease will forever punctuate modern history. It has led to the deaths of millions, sickened hundreds of millions and affected the lives of almost every person on the planet. We now know that Covid is here to stay. "Genetic engineering expert Dr Alina Chan and renowned science writer Matt Ridley examine the origins of SARS-CoV-2, the virus responsible for Covid-19, using their formidable skills to scrutinise arguments and rigorously analyse the sprawling data. Viral is a fascinating account that takes in pangolins, horseshoe bats, internet sleuths and misleading scientific papers. It details the evidence and investigates hypotheses for the virus origin, chief among them a potential laboratory leak or a natural spillover. "Science has made great strides over the last decades. Chan and Ridley give an insight into the proliferating pathogen research and virus hunting around the world. Whatever the source of the virus, the world needs to adopt new policies and strategies to prevent or mitigate future outbreaks. "Set in the caves and mineshafts, food markets and wildlife smugglers' stores, laboratories and databases of China and elsewhere, Viral is a page-turner that reads like a detective novel and goes deeper into the deepest mystery of the day than any other work. This is the book on the search for the origin of Covid-19." In Episode 219 of Hidden Forces, Demetri Kofinas speaks with Matt Ridley and Alina Chan. Alina is a Canadian molecular biologist specializing in gene therapy and cell engineering at the Broad Institute of MIT and Harvard and Matt is a British science journalist who has written countless bestselling books on subjects ranging from evolution, to innovation, to genomic science. They are the co-authors of an electrifying new book titled “Viral” that grapples with the mystery of how Covid-19, a virus whose closest known relatives live in bats residing in subtropical southern China, somehow managed to begin spreading among people more than 1,500 kilometers away in the city of Wuhan, while leaving none of the expected traces that such outbreaks usually create. Instead, nearly two years into this pandemic we're presented with a trail of evidence that increasingly points towards the Wuhan Institute of Virology and the so-called “Lab Leak Hypothesis” as the most plausible source of the outbreak. This is a critically important conversation to be having and Matt and Alina have made an invaluable contribution to it by working tirelessly and at great risk to themselves and to their careers in order to bring clarity to many of the facts and much of the evidence in support of the lab leak hypothesis—a theory that was consistently attacked and discredited by various actors, both wittingly and unwittingly, in the earliest days of the pandemic. We normally release the second half of our episodes for our subscribers only, but because of how important this conversation is and because of how much Matt and Alina have sacrificed in order to educate us all on the origins of Covid-19, we thought it was only right to do as much as we can to share as much of their work as possible. What is the truth? The zoonotic hypothesis or the The Lab leak theory? Quotes below from CNN. Through much of 2021, the lab leak theory gained momentum. In March of this year, Dr. Robert Redfield, the former director of the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and a career virologist, told Dr. Sanjay Gupta that he thinks Covid-19 originated in a lab in Wuhan, China. WHO report's number of pages dedicated to the lab leak theory. "The total: annex and main report, for the laboratory (hypothesis) was about four pages out of 313 ... and in those four pages the title of the section was, 'Conspiracy Theories.' " Critics say that the WHO study was flawed even before the WHO team landed in Wuhan in January 2021. From the outset, the Chinese government had to agree to the terms of the WHO's study, including which scientists were selected to go to China, which locations would be visited, and what primary data could be accessed. Alina Chan, a molecular biologist at the Broad Institute of MIT and Harvard points out, "All of the original analyses had been done by Chinese scientists before the WHO came in." Will we ever know the complete truth of the Origins of the Covid 19 virus that has taken over the world? Why am I being told to "Trust the Science" when the scientists cannot even find the truth of the origin? Can we trust something if it is based upon a lie? This is just my opinion.

We also hear that a network of independent researchers called D.R.A.S.T.I.C. came together to work towards to discover the true source of the virus, and in doing so, confirmed that the closest relative of SARS-CoV-2 is actually a virus that Dr. Shi Zhengli of the WIV partially sequenced back in 2016, and further, that the virus is connected to a mystery pneumonia suffered by six men from Yunnan, China, back in 2012. Not because of science or factual information. Rather, these scientists did NOT want to look like they were supporting President Donald J. Trump.  Back in May of 2020, Dr. Alina Chan was pushing hard to get the scientific community to look into the Wuhan Lab. Rather than showing an interest in science, facts or information gathering, it made her a target of scientists looking to squash any talk that the pandemic could have originated from a lab. In fact, those scientists, without a shred of information, rushed to downplay the possibility, publishing a letter in The Lancet that cast such notions of a lab leak was "xenophobic" and "anti-vax." Vanity Fair recently reported The Lancet statement effectively ended the debate over Covid-19's origins before it began.  This is not science. This is, as former CDC Director Dr. Robert Redfield said he believes the pandemic originated in the lab and that those who moved to shut down the lab leak theory were "very anti-science."  We went for another 12 months listening to the so-called scientific experts only to find they would rather allow their emotional hatred for a president prevent them from embracing the scientific method. They became willing stooges, perpetrating a lie embraced by top public health officials, the Democrat party and the mainstream media.  The episode wraps with a short clip from Arch Bishop Sheen about how communists have to remove God so the "state" can replace him. I ask the question, based on how the last 12 months have been orchestrated with a world-wide psyop, are we not seeing the fruits of what happens when citizens are made to believe the state is infallible and not to be questioned?  Be sure to like and follow The Alan Sanders Show on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram! Katherine Eban is an investigative journalist and contributor to Vanity Fair. Her latest article is ”The Lab-Leak Theory: Inside the Fight to Uncover COVID-19's Origins.””You can't make a correction unless you know why something happened. So imagine—if this is a lab leak—the earth shattering consequences for virology. For the science community, for how research is done, for how research is regulated. Or if it is a zoonotic origin, we have to know how our human incursion into wild spaces could be unleashing these viruses. Because COVID-19 is one thing, but we're going to be looking at COVID-25 and COVID-34. We have to know what caused this.” Thanks to Mailchimp for sponsoring this week's episode. Nick talks to genetic engineer Alina Chan, PhD. She is working on engineering new forms of gene therapy using viral vectors to target diverse patient populations. In addition to her core scientific focus, Alina has recently investigated genomic data related to SARS-CoV-2, the virus responsible for the COVID19 pandemic. They discuss the basics of virus biology, including what kind of virus SARS-CoV-2 is and how it infects human cells. They also talked about the published research on this virus that has come out in the past year, Alina's recent investigations into the origins of this virus and why it's crucial for humanity to understand exactly how this virus originated, as well as new variants that have emerged, and where this virus might be going.USEFUL LINKS:Download the podcast & follow Nick at his website[www.nickjikomes.com]Support the show on Patreon & get early access to episodes[https://www.patreon.com/nickjikomes]Sign up for the weekly Mind & Matter newsletter[http://eepurl.com/hFlc7H]Try MUD/WTR, a mushroom-based coffee alternative[https://www.mudwtr.com/mindmatter]Discount Code ($5 off) = MINDMATTEROrganize your digital highlights & notes w/ Readwise (2 months free w/ subscription)[https://readwise.io/nickjikomes/]Start your own podcast (get $20 Amazon gift card after signup)[https://www.buzzsprout.com/?referrer_id=1507198]Buy Mind & Matter T-Shirts[https://www.etsy.com/shop/OURMIND?ref=simple-shop-header-name&listing_id=1036758072§ion_id=34648633]Connect with Nick Jikomes on Twitter[https://twitter.com/trikomes]Learn more about our podcast sponsor, Dosist[https://dosist.com/]ABOUT Nick Jikomes:Nick is a neuroscientist and podcast host. Hi, joining me today on the podcast is Alina Chan, a Post Doctorate researcher at the Broad Institute of MIT and Harvard. Alina has made headlines over the past year for being one of the advocates of investigating all plausible explanations of Covid-19. Specifically, she has drawn the ire and fury of some scientists and the Chinese government for suggesting that the pandemic could be the result of a lab leak from a virology lab in Wuhan. She talks today about the evidence that she and other scientists have found that suggests that the hypothesis might be true and why natural causes might not be as apparent an explanation as one may think. Take a listen and judge for yourself.

Since the beginning of the coronavirus pandemic, the prevailing wisdom from government officials and much of the scientific community is that the SARS-CoV-2 virus originated in an animal and at some point jumped to humans. The idea that it might have accidentally escaped from a lab has been widely dismissed as conspiracy theory, partly because it was easily conflated with inflammatory rhetoric coming out of the Trump administration. But plenty of scientists and policy have quietly taken the so-called "lab-leak hypothesis" seriously and now that the volume has been lowered on some of Trump's more dangerous distortions they're starting to talk about it.    Two experts that have been talking about it all along are Dr. Alina Chan, a molecular biologist at the Broad Institute of MIT & Harvard, and Dr. Filippa Lentzos, a biosecurity expert and senior research fellow at King's College London. Together, they spoke with Meghan about what we do and don't know about the origins of the virus, why knowing the origins matters in the first place, and, above all, why people have such difficulty separating the idea of a deliberately released bioweapon, which no serious person has suggested, with the possibility of an unintentional lab spill-over, for which there is plenty of room for questions in this case.   Guest Bios:   Dr. Alina Chan is a recent Human Frontier Science Program fellow with 12+ years of research training in medical genetics, biochemistry, synthetic biology, and vector engineering. At the Broad Institute of MIT & Harvard, Dr. Chan is currently researching next generation AAV vectors for human gene therapy. During the COVID-19 pandemic, Dr. Chan began to investigate problems relevant to finding the origins of the SARS-CoV-2 virus and spearheaded the development of the COVID-19 CoV Genetics (covidcg.org) browser for scientists worldwide to rapidly track emerging SARS-CoV-2 variants by locations and date ranges of interest. Follow her on Twitter @ayjchan.   Filippa Lentzos, PhD, is a Senior Research Fellow at King's College London, where she has a joint appointment in the Department of War Studies and the Department of Global Health & Social Medicine. She is also an Associate Senior Researcher within armament and disarmament program at the Stockholm International Peace Research Institute, a biosecurity columnist at the Bulletin of the Atomic Scientists, an editor of the social science journal BioSocieties, and the NGO Coordinator for the Biological and Toxin Weapons Convention. Her May 5, 2020 article on the need for a credible investigation into the virus's origins appeared in the Bulletin of the Atomic Scientists. Alina Chan is a post-doctoral fellow at the Broad Institute. Since the spring of 2020 Chan has been prominent in online (and “offline”) discussions as to the nature of the origins of SARS-Cov-2. Her argument is that there needs to be more openness to alternative possibilities of the origin of SARS-Cov-2. She is a co-author on two preprints related to SARS-Cov-2: SARS-CoV-2 is well adapted for humans. What does this mean for re-emergence?
