I don't know about you, but I've learned that New Year's resolutions don't work well for me. Eat healthier, exercise more, and have more gratitude—those are the usual go-to's. Maybe it's my Midwestern stubbornness that makes me think, “Don't tell me what to do!” so I end up doing the opposite—eating more sugar, sleeping in instead of going for a run, and complaining more than feeling grateful. It's embarrassing to admit, but it's true. What I've found that works for me is to choose a word for the year, one that will guide me toward more adventure, joy, and truth. This year, my word is love.Today's guest on the Cracking Open podcast, Christina Rasmussen, embodies this word beautifully in her work, relationships, and teachings.Widowed at a young age, Christina was left managing the devastating loss of her partner while also raising their baby and toddler on her own. Initially, all Christina wanted to do was run away from her pain as far as possible, despite her master's degree in guidance and counseling. Four years after her 35-year-old husband passed away from Stage 4 colon cancer, she finally found the courage to confront her grief and created the Life Reentry process, which launched her on a mission to bring compassion, grace, and validation to thousands, while simultaneously establishing an exit from what she termed the Waiting Room.Christina has also published three bestselling books: Second Firsts in 2013, Where Did You Go? in 2018, and her most recent book published in 2024 - Invisible Loss. In this episode, you'll feel the love and wisdom Christina brings as she discusses the concept of “invisible losses”—experiences that are completely devastating yet often difficult to articulate. These losses can sometimes be more perplexing and challenging to navigate than the overt tragedies we face.Christina shares how to honor our invisible losses, using writing exercises she calls “cleanses” to move out of the “Waiting Room”—that place of uncertainty where we feel disconnected from our true selves.

There are certain experiences that are completely and utterly devastating, yet seemingly impossible to articulate and share. Grief educator and author Christina Rasmussen calls these our “invisible losses”—and they are often more perplexing and difficult to navigate than the overt tragedies we all endure in life. In this podcast, join Sounds True's founder, Tami Simon, in conversation with Christina Rasmussen about her new book, Invisible Loss: Recognizing and Healing the Unacknowledged Heartbreak of Everyday Grief. Filled with unique perspective and compassionate insight, this dialogue explores the place of uncertainty and stagnation known as “the waiting room”; the original self, and how we get disconnected from it; the impacts of an “us vs. them” experience; how to identify your primary invisible loss; three inner narrators—the survivor, the watcher, and the thriver; reclaiming our forgotten “thriver memories”; the cost of seeking approval; saying yes to what you've always wanted to do; cleansing our patterns of fear; the practice of mental stacking; the Life Reentry model; reframing our experiences and taking action from our wisdom; why the place of death is also the place of creation; and more.

Some people relate to trauma. Some to grief. But everyone will admit to disappointment, even if you're a chronic minimizer like me. We're not here to exaggerate and inflate anything, and nobody wants to give attention to disappointment so it limits them. That however is my concern. Are we healthfully dealing with disappointments or are we repressing unresolved feelings that are in fact, limiting us? You may be CEO of your company and clearing a million per year, and have unresolved disappointments, from your childhood or last year, limiting you. Maybe they are limiting your performance. Your income. Your relationships. Your fulfillment despite your achievements. This was my focus as I entered into the following discussion with acclaimed grief educator and multiple best selling author, Christina Rasmussen. Christina studied to become a therapist and crisis intervention counselor - even doing her master's thesis on the stages of bereavement, and thought she understood grief. Then, with daughters nine months and two-and-a-half years old, her 31 year old husband was diagnosed with Stage 4 colon cancer and passed away. It was then she truly grasped the depths of sorrow and pain that accompany loss. Four years after Christina's husband died she created the Life Reentry process, which launched her on a mission to bring compassion, grace, and validation to thousands, while simultaneously establishing an exit from what she termed the Waiting Room. She wrote the book, Second Firsts that became a bestseller. Then, Where Did You Go? Her new book and our muse here is Invisible Loss: Recognizing and Healing the Unacknowledged Heartbreak of Everyday Grief. She's taken her experience and research from severe and tragic loss and brought the same, profound process of healing into our everyday grief and disappointments. She found that it's not the size of the big trauma or little disappointment that matters, but the resolution, and she has a process to help us work through it. Christina is a pure joy. I'm in Florida and just received autographed copies of her book, signed to my mom Joanne, who is just four months past my Dad's death. This inspiring conversation will light up your day. My friends, if you're looking for a conversation that underscores resilience, the power of community, and how to embrace life's fullest potential, this episode is for you.
This week we're asking, "what's stopping me?" Our brains are very good at creating obstacles that seem insurmountable and as Pam says, "the chatter seems very real at the time." We share some of our own self-limiting stories and reflect on the benefit of asking another question, "what is most important to me about this?" We mention Christina Rasmussen's idea of "the Waiting Room," and you can read more about that concept here.Sidebar: our friend and occasional guest, Jim Graziano, could use some support during a challenging time. You can read more about this here and we appreciate your help! For more information about the offerings from V L'Bassi Transformational Coaching, you can find the links here:Schedule a free 3-card reading!Try a mini coaching session! For more details, visit Vee's website.

(There's some background noise in this episode, and we hope it's not too distracting.)This week we continue our conversation around resistance, control, and surrender. We share our ideas around a concept called "the waiting room." (Vee references a book, "Second Firsts," which is written by Christina Rasmussen.) Our own inner waiting rooms can be a place of refuge and also a trap of avoidance. What's one small (or not so small) thing you're avoiding? What would change for you if you could loosen the grip of resistance and begin to welcome the relief of surrender? For more information about the offerings from V L'Bassi Transformational Coaching, you can find the links here:Schedule a free 3-card reading!Try a mini coaching session! For more details, visit Vee's website.

It has been a few weeks since we've had a new episode and this one is a short one about self-compassion. I also talk about why I took a break from writing the weekly letter (don't worry, it will be back soon) and how healing it has been to take a pause from one pursuit to make space for another. When author and pioneer in the field of grief Christina Rasmussen tragically lost her beloved, she found herself faced with the pressing question: “where did you go?” Listen in and discover a NEW way to view death as not the end - but as a continuing.
Inside of all of us there lives an identity, a personality that is always hidden. Only a small percentage of people are able to show up in the world exactly as they are because it can take a great deal of courage. So, today, let's try to express our true selves even if it's in a small way. Start with one choice to reveal a part of your hidden self. Maybe it's wearing a color that you love, painting a wall in a color no one else would normally choose, or in any other way that makes sense to you. I'd love to know what you think. Please share it with your friends and family, and be sure to tag me if you share it on social media so that I can say thank you. I talk about making sure that in your life, in your relationships, with your family, your friends, and with yourself that you honor the open sea perspective and the knowing that you have because of the losses that you've experienced. You are not here to settle. You are here to live the life that you're supposed to have. “What a shame finally to reach the open sea, but settle for a modest jug of water!” - Excerpt From: Rumi. “Rumi's Little Book of Wisdom.” I'd love to know what you think. The holiday season is upon us and so are the complex feelings that can come with it. I talk about the contrast of the happiness of the holidays and the pain of loss, anxiety, and worry that can plague so many of us. I also talk about the importance of trusting that we can show up as ourselves without always preparing so much. I want you to try to make space for both sadness and joy during this time. They are two sides of the same coin. I'd love to know what you think. Please share it with your friends and family, and be sure to tag me if you share it on social media so that I can say thank you. For those who follow me on Instagram, you see that I often post photographs of the sunrise and I feel that there's something really special about it. There is some kind of connection between us and the sun, almost some kind of communication. When I am watching the sunrise, I feel that each day gets a fresh start. As if someone is telling me that the day is going to be ok. Everything is better for those few moments. On today's episode I am talking about reentering after a long quarantined year. Why it is important to not assume that you are the same person you were when you went into quarantine. You may think that you are the same because you have been with yourself all this time. It is hard to detect change when you are in constant interaction with yourself. I am going to ask you to consider that you are different. Reentry back to life is going to feel like you have just left a dark room and you walked into a very sunny world without your sunglasses. Even that is a gross understatement of what life reentry is after being in the Waiting Room for such a long time. Enjoy this solo episode and make sure you go out and experiment with something new. Something new and something easy. Sunglasses won't be enough for the effect of the sun light on your eyes after being in the darkness for what felt like an eternity. Hey you BEAUTIFUL SOUL!!!It's so good to have you here and listening in on these conversations about leading a better life. And today you are in for a true TREAT with my dear, wonderful friend, Christina Rasmussen! She is the multiple-time best-selling author of Second Firsts, Where Did You Go? And the newest book, Invisible Loss. She is the host of the "Dear Life Podcast," in fact, here is a link to OUR PODCAST together on that. She is the founder of The Life-Reentry Institute which has helped literally hundreds of thousands of people turn their grief into a launching pad for the next experiences of their lives. She got her masters in grief therapy and worked as a therapist helping others move through their grief when, at age 34 her beloved husband died of pancreatic cancer, leaving Christina with her two young daughters and a certainty that grief wasn't being dealt with in the best way possible. So she did something about that. She studied neuroscience, neuroplasticity, and used that to map out behaviors that people can take to transform their grief. We talk about some of that here, as well as life, serendipities, spirituality, business, and a whole host of many, many other things. It was my honor to have Christina on the show, and even more to have her as a friend. Please know that you are loved and deserving!Chip ❤️
