Our inner critic often suggests that it's acceptable to grieve significant losses, but we should just push through everyday heartaches like workplace rejections, feeling disconnected in our relationships, being ignored by friends, or being stuck in a job that doesn't fulfill us. Christina Rasmussen, my guest, emphasizes the importance of recognizing and processing this often overlooked type of grief. In our conversation, she will illuminate these lesser-known forms of grief, helping us heal and find a sense of peace and hope in our lives. Christina Rasmussen is an acclaimed grief educator and bestselling author of "Second Firsts," "Where Did You Go?" and "Invisible Loss." Her impactful grief work has been featured on ABC News, Psychology Today, in Women's World, the Washington Post, and the White House Blog. Christina created the Life Reentry process, which launched her on a mission to bring compassion, grace, and validation to thousands while simultaneously establishing an exit from what she termed the Waiting Room.  During our conversation, Christina and I explored different aspects of invisible losses, discussing their origins and the transformative power of shifting one's mindset. We talked about letting go of shame and guilt, allowing one to rediscover one's true self. This shift in perspective can bring hope and inspiration to our lives.

I don't know about you, but I've learned that New Year's resolutions don't work well for me. Eat healthier, exercise more, and have more gratitude—those are the usual go-to's. Maybe it's my Midwestern stubbornness that makes me think, “Don't tell me what to do!” so I end up doing the opposite—eating more sugar, sleeping in instead of going for a run, and complaining more than feeling grateful. It's embarrassing to admit, but it's true. What I've found that works for me is to choose a word for the year, one that will guide me toward more adventure, joy, and truth. This year, my word is love.Today's guest on the Cracking Open podcast, Christina Rasmussen, embodies this word beautifully in her work, relationships, and teachings.Widowed at a young age, Christina was left managing the devastating loss of her partner while also raising their baby and toddler on her own. Initially, all Christina wanted to do was run away from her pain as far as possible, despite her master's degree in guidance and counseling. Four years after her 35-year-old husband passed away from Stage 4 colon cancer, she finally found the courage to confront her grief and created the Life Reentry process, which launched her on a mission to bring compassion, grace, and validation to thousands, while simultaneously establishing an exit from what she termed the Waiting Room.Christina has also published three bestselling books: Second Firsts in 2013, Where Did You Go? in 2018, and her most recent book published in 2024 - Invisible Loss. In this episode, you'll feel the love and wisdom Christina brings as she discusses the concept of “invisible losses”—experiences that are completely devastating yet often difficult to articulate. These losses can sometimes be more perplexing and challenging to navigate than the overt tragedies we face.Christina shares how to honor our invisible losses, using writing exercises she calls “cleanses” to move out of the “Waiting Room”—that place of uncertainty where we feel disconnected from our true selves. We also dive into identifying invisible losses and the three inner narratives we create as we process them: the survivor, the watcher, and the thrive. This episode is full of actionable tips and tools for navigating grief and honoring all the moments that crack us open in life. Christina reminds us that love is the best medicine—not just to heal grief but to embrace any experience that helps us grow.Christina is currently finishing her Master of Fine Arts degree in painting and drawing at the Academy of Art University. Her work on grief has been featured in The Guardian, Oprah Daily, ABC News, Women's World, The Washington Post, and the White House Blog. Some people relate to trauma. Some to grief. But everyone will admit to disappointment, even if you're a chronic minimizer like me. We're not here to exaggerate and inflate anything, and nobody wants to give attention to disappointment so it limits them. That however is my concern. Are we healthfully dealing with disappointments or are we repressing unresolved feelings that are in fact, limiting us? You may be CEO of your company and clearing a million per year, and have unresolved disappointments, from your childhood or last year, limiting you. Maybe they are limiting your performance. Your income. Your relationships. Your fulfillment despite your achievements. This was my focus as I entered into the following discussion with acclaimed grief educator and multiple best selling author, Christina Rasmussen. Christina studied to become a therapist and crisis intervention counselor - even doing her master's thesis on the stages of bereavement, and thought she understood grief. Then, with daughters nine months and two-and-a-half years old, her 31 year old husband was diagnosed with Stage 4 colon cancer and passed away. It was then she truly grasped the depths of sorrow and pain that accompany loss. Four years after Christina's husband died she created the Life Reentry process, which launched her on a mission to bring compassion, grace, and validation to thousands, while simultaneously establishing an exit from what she termed the Waiting Room. She wrote the book, Second Firsts that became a bestseller. Then, Where Did You Go? Her new book and our muse here is Invisible Loss: Recognizing and Healing the Unacknowledged Heartbreak of Everyday Grief. She's taken her experience and research from severe and tragic loss and brought the same, profound process of healing into our everyday grief and disappointments. She found that it's not the size of the big trauma or little disappointment that matters, but the resolution, and she has a process to help us work through it. Christina is a pure joy. I'm in Florida and just received autographed copies of her book, signed to my mom Joanne, who is just four months past my Dad's death. This inspiring conversation will light up your day. I’m so happy to introduce you to today’s guest, Dr. Lisa Shulman. As I told her at the beginning of our conversation, had I found her work when I experienced the loss of my husband in 2006, I may not be doing the work that I am doing now. I thanked her for doing her work and for writing her book Before and After Loss because the way she describes the impact of loss and grief on the brain is truly life-changing for all of us. When I first found her book I thought, how come I didn’t know about this before and how come my community doesn’t know about her? Dr. Shulman and I have a wide reaching conversation about her own experience of grief when her husband died to her research and need to understand, as a neurologist, just what was happening to her brain as she experienced grief or as she calls it, emotional trauma.  Like me, she had much professional experience with grief before her own experience, so she anticipated that she would have an easier time than others because she had been close to the experience, but as she learned you don’t really know how it actually feels until you are walking in those shoes. Dr. Shulman explains why our Survivor self kicks in after emotional trauma to keep us moving through the world, and in many cases, high-functioning. It’s how we continue to go to work, take care of our children, maybe even make big life changes and take risks. It’s in this mode that we start to believe that we’re “ok” and so do the others around us. I had chills when she talked about the depression that comes with grief wasn’t the problem. The real problem as she understood and experienced it was the utter disorientation and loss of self-identity, one of the big invisible losses that I talk about in my book Second Firsts and in my Life Reentry classes. It took a long time for her to unpack and understand that was what was going on. Because, as you know if you’ve experienced the death of a loved one, you’re not only grieving the person that you lost but also the person that you were in relation to them.   “When you understand how the emotional trauma of loss impacts the brain, it normalizes the experience and you feel less alone. We are all having very similar experiences, right down to the kinds of dreams that we have.” ~ Dr. Lisa Shulman   Dr. Shulman explains that it’s the same brain pathways whether you are experiencing the death of a loved one, losing your job, or go through a divorce. No matter the loss, it’s alll tied up in the brain’s evolutionary patterns for our survival in the face of threat. Grief is felt in the same place of the brain no matter what loss you are experiencing. She approached her grief as a neurologist and wants to normalize the experience of grief for everyone. As she explains, when you understand how emotional trauma impacts the brain, it normalizes the experiences and helps us to feel less alone. While of course everyone’s experience is different, it’s also true that we are having very similar experiences, right down to the kind of dreams that we have.  Dr. Shulman wants everyone to know that the experience of loss is a normal response of the brain and that there are extremely powerful, tangible things that we can do for ourselves to promote our healing.  She believes that the more we understand that we can promote positive neuroplasticity for ourselves we can truly being to heal.  I hope that you’ll listen and let me know what you think of this conversation. Please comment below or share with me on social media. Please share it with your friends and family, and be sure to tag me if you share it on social media so that I can say thank you. Today, I’m doing something a little different than I have done before. While many listeners are likely familiar with my story and my work, I’m aware that maybe you don’t! So, today I thought that I would “introduce” myself to you in case you’ve been wondering what happens beyond the podcast or how I came to do this work.  Fourteen years ago, I lost my thirty-five-year-old husband to cancer, leaving me with two young girls to raise. I felt lost, frustrated, and alienated by our culture’s outdated “time heals all wounds” approach to grieving. As I’ve described many times in my weekly newsletter and in my first book, Second Firsts, I felt like an alien on earth. I felt like I no longer belonged here and nothing made sense.  I realized that even my training as a grief counselor had not prepared me for what I was feeling and experiencing. I felt like I had also died that day and had to find a way to create a whole new life, and the model for grief that I’d been taught didn't explain that or show me the way out. So, I set out to understand what I was experiencing and the Life Reentry® Model is the outcome of that search. I hope you’ll listen to this episode where I walk you through how, and why I created The Life Reentry® Model through which I have led thousands of people through. I myself practice the principles of Life Reentry daily. It’s more than just a class or theory, it’s a way of seeing and living your life. It was fun to remember the early days of these classes and how we were one of the first using Zoom, well before we all became very familiar with it this past year!   “There is no going back to the person you were before loss. There is only going forward. Being stuck in the in-between, in the Waiting Room, is where we suffer, play small, and repeat old patterns and behaviors that keep us just surviving instead of thriving in our new life. Many people spend years in the Waiting Room, thinking that this is their new life.” ~ Christina Rasmussen   Life Reentry begins with a person stuck between two worlds. This is a place we call The Waiting Room—a psychological space one retreats to after great loss. It is a gap between lives—the life that has been forced into the past by grief and loss, and the new life that has yet to begin. The Waiting Room is not a physical place, but rather a mindset. It’s a holding pattern—safe, comfortable, but inhibitory. It keeps us out of danger, but also out of our life.  After spending the last ten years teaching and educating hundreds of thousands of bereaved people through classes, workshops, and my two books, I made the discovery that it wasn’t the traditional loss of death that kept the bereaved and non-bereaved people in a repetitive cycle of grief, but the invisible, non-validated and untold losses from the earlier chapters of their lives.  I call these Invisible Losses. What I uncovered through my time with people was the multitude of Invisible Losses that kept pulling people back into, and staying stuck in the Waiting Room. I discovered an undercover world of grief. What plagued my class participants and emotionally imprisoned them long term more than anything was these invisible, mistakenly perceived smaller experiences that are not traditionally considered significant. These are the losses that society fails to recognize, mirror back, or validate.  When everything looks the same on the outside, yet everything has changed on the inside, we break. We break in half. This is the duality of loss. In this short episode, I explain in more detail what Invisible Loss means and what they look like in our everyday lives (there are multitudes).    My mission is to bring forth a new way of speaking about and embracing loss and also to help our communities understand that living after loss is equally important as grieving.    If you are feeling stuck in a place between the life you left behind and the life you so wish you can have… If you feel stuck in the Waiting Room but don’t quite know why... If you have gone through something difficult, invisible, untraditional, or a big loss and have struggled to find your way back... If you feel like you should be farther along in processing your grief but just can’t seem to move through it... If you are ready to look at your life, behaviors, and patterns and create a new life and way of being…   I’d like to invite you to join me for my next Life Reentry for Invisible Losses course. Having studied bereavement and even doing her master's thesis in it, Christina Rassmussen thought she knew grief. Then the tragic loss of a child and then her husband to cancer and being left with the loss of a future and a young family to tend to, she found herself not finding answers or help from traditional therapy so she returned to her studies and found a new way. She describes grief as a gap you can get lost in, between your past with someone and your future without them. The way she speaks of the experience of loss is like no one else, blending personal experience, neuroscience and hope. If you've lost someone or know someone who has, this episode will open your eyes to healing and a whole new way of processing grief. This week I am talking to Christina Rasmussen about her book ' Where Did You Go? A Life-Changing Journey to Connect with Those We've Lost'. In her first book, Second Firsts, grief educator Christina Rasmussen helped countless readers cope with and rebuild their lives after loss through her Life Reentry program, drawing on both her professional expertise and her personal experience of becoming a widow at age 35. Still, even after rediscovering joy, she wrestled with one persistent question: where did you go? Like so many of her clients, she continued to wonder what had become of her husband—and whether there is any hope of connecting with our loved ones after they have passed on. Now in her second book, Where Did You Go? A Life-Changing Journey to Connect with Those We've Lost, Rasmussen reveals not only that the answer is “yes,” but that we all have the ability to reconnect with our lost loved ones—while accessing a timeless consciousness that can profoundly change our lives here and now. Books about the afterlife generally fall into one of two categories: spiritual or science-based. Rasmussen—who grew up in a small Greek town where religion permeated daily life, but who fell in love with neuroscience and psychology while studying in Europe and the United States—merges the metaphysical with the scientific in Where Did You Go?, delving into quantum physics and brain science to make the invisible visible, and illuminate some of our most pressing spiritual questions. “When a loved one dies, we can open a door between this world and the next. It only closes when we don't look for it, when we don't observe it and when we don't believe it's there,” writes Rasmussen. “When we walk through this door, we go on a journey to an invisible place.” A step-by-step guide to journeying to the other side—as well as a groundbreaking exploration of what happens after we die—Where Did You Go? leads readers through practical exercises that serve as tools to help us experience the unseen world for ourselves, connect with our loved ones, become comfortable with the experience, and trigger it whenever we desire—no psychic abilities required. “The death of a loved one brings forth an opening just wide enough for us to squeeze in and seek our own truth, to seek the multi-dimensional world where you will find your beloved,” writes Rasmussen. “You want to be a part of it. You want to go inside this place your beloved has gone, reach for their hand, and let them give you a tug. And in that reaching, you find not just them but the place from which you've come, the place you belong.” Christina Rasmussen is an acclaimed grief educator, the author of Second Firsts and  Where Did You Go?. “Is there any way to make the friends that feel left behind after grief understand? For me, almost all of my relationships have fallen away because as you said in your book Second Firsts, what used to connect me to most of the people in my life is simply no longer there. I tried with a couple of really treasured relationships to explain over and over again that it wasn’t personal. That I was a different person. That the old me was gone, but people kept trying to get me back to being “myself,” which meant my old self. I tried to find new connections between us but all that’s there is a ghost of an old connection. After some time they would try to get back to what used to connect us be it work, or faith or so on and it just doesn’t work. And I want to scream, I’m sorry but I just don’t care about this! I’ve said this in every kind way I can and I’d like to see where we can connect now, but they are not interested in that. I feel resentment, fear and anger coming from them because they sense the change. They feel left behind. They just don’t understand.” - Ann In This Episode I Talk About: That so many people feel the same way, you are not alone! The more I tried to make them work, the more I felt the anger, resentment and frustration Why you have to not force this and let go of those relationships My personal experience of letting relationships go That you may need to change your life in a practical way - do you need to move? Do you need to try new things and to meet new people that match better who you are now? Christina Rasmussen had a master's degree in counseling and psychology, but nothing prepared her for the death of her 35-year-old husband in 2006. Marni Henderson and her sons had just 15 months to make memories and say goodbye after her husband was diagnosed with a brain tumor. Today, we're talking about Marni's decision to pull her sons out of school to spend time with their dying father, what it's like facing big milestones after loss, and one of my favorite books—Second Firsts—that led Marni to get trained as a Life Reentry Practitioner. She's also talking about the annual widow's retreat she leads that's going to Belize this year! Also this week, I'm giving you a grounding question to ask yourself in the aftermath of loss: What is still true about me? In Feb 2015, I did a 5-day symposium consisting of 25 interviews with powerful and inspiring women sharing their stories and advice for transcending life’s struggles, fears and doing it their own way. We got so much incredible feedback on the interviews, we decided to turn it into a podcast. At times during the interviews when you hear us refer to the series or interviews that have already been done, keep in mind these interviews have been repurposed and may not follow the original order – but stay tuned because we’ll be airing four each month on Mondays alternating with fresh new episodes called “Ask Liz” every Wednesday. About Christina Rasmussen: Christina Rasmussen is on a crusade to change the way we live after loss. As the founder of Second Firsts, Christina spends her time speaking, coaching and helping thousands of people to rebuild, reclaim and re-launch their whole lives — using the most powerful tool for personal reinvention: the human mind. Before creating Second Firsts, Christina worked as a therapist + crisis intervention specialist. But after losing her husband to colon cancer, Christina experienced the agony of sudden loss, firsthand. With two daughters in tow, she began the tender process of transforming her tragedy into a new career, a renewed sense of purpose, and a life of joy + laughter. Second Firsts was born. In this episode, Christina shares: 1. Importance of choosing yourself 2. The relationship between fear and safety 3. What’s on the other side of “the dream”?
