Fact-checking the 2024 election

Donald Trump began his political career with demands to see Barack Obama's birth certificate, based on the false claim that the he had been born outside of the United States. In other words, a lie. The former president concluded his term in office with an even bigger lie, namely that the 2020 election was rigged. In between, Trump fibbed thousands of times about things big and small. And keeping track of these mistruths and exaggerations were political fact-checkers, journalists whose job it is to call out not only Donald Trump's lies – but the lies all politicians tell. Glenn Kessler has been the chief writer and editor of the Fact Checker column for The Washington Post since 2011. In it he examines the “truth behind the rhetoric.”Kessler joined Diane to talk about how his job has changed since Donald Trump entered politics and the challenges of covering the 2024 presidential election.

In Reality is taking a summer break, so this is an episode we've posted before, but I thought that in the middle of a US Presidential campaign, it might be a good idea to review my conversation with Glenn Kessler, editor of the Washington Post's Fact Checker column and arguably the creator of the fact checking industry. In the Post, Glenn and his team have been holding both campaigns to account with equal intensity. Thanks to them, Post readers are now aware, for example, of Tim Walz's exaggerations of his military record, as well as the barrage of conspiratorial falsehoods coming from the Trump campaign. In the conversation, Glenn makes the point that fact-checks can only take us so far. You the reader have to be willing to accept facts that don't conform to your beliefs. That last mile, if you will, of factuality, is not easy to travel. But it's our responsibility as voters in a consequential election, and ours alone. After all, one way to make your vote count—and the only way you control entirely—is to make sure it's based on truth. Website - free episode transcriptswww.in-reality.fmProduced by Sound Sapiensoundsapien.comAlliance for Trust in Mediaalliancefortrust.com

SERIES 3 EPISODE 13: COUNTDOWN WITH KEITH OLBERMANN A-Block (1:44) SPECIAL COMMENT: Did you HEAR Trump yesterday? Did you HEAR HIM TALK? He's in Howell, Michigan, where it might as well be Alabama in the year 1855, where they marched chanting “We Love Hitler, We Love Trump” a MONTH ago, and he came out at the County Sheriff's Office, and behind him with the cops as the props and if he had had ten times the energy and ten times the focus you would have said: what's wrong with Trump? Is he DYING or something? I mean I don't THINK he's dying, I think there are intermediate stages between having every single thing in a presidential campaign turn against you in a matter of two weeks and actually dying, but look if this mumble thing continues, at this rate they're going to have start putting live captions over him. Trump responded to the overture from the RFK Junior camp about dropping out if Trump would give him a role in his cabinet. “I didn't know he was thinking about getting out, but if he is thinking about getting out, certainly I'd be open to it.” RFK's running mate Nicole Shanahan appears to be doing the bargaining. Even she has figured it out: "We run the risk of a Kamala Harris and Walz presidency, as we draw votes from Trump. We draw, somehow, more votes from Trump. Or we walk away, right now, and join forces with Donald Trump…” Translation: bribe us and we'll go away. Looks like what they want is Secretary of Health and Human Services. THE SELF-DEFENESTRATION OF THE POLITICAL MEDIA: The Times really did it yesterday, with no sense of irony, no meta self-reflection: “Kamala Harris's tan suit was a surprising choice, our fashion critic writes.” The Post, meantime, did a DNC factcheck and got half a dozen things wrong: the Post insisted that there was no evidence that Trump ever sent love letters to dictators with Kessler writing “we do not know what Trump wrote to Kim Jong Un,” Media Matters went appropriately nuts. Of course we know. Trump showed them to… Bob Woodward of the Post. The factcheck now has its own factcheck. I recommend to you and will quote extensively from a masterpiece on this topic in The New Republic. Meredith Shiner writes: "after years of watching Morning Joe and searching for their birthdays in the Politico Playbook, they do not see their role as speaking to us, but rather speaking to themselves." Ex-effing-actly. B-Block (26:47) THE WORST PERSONS IN THE WORLD: Jesse Watters has rebirthed birtherism. He's sending "Johnny" to Hawaii to get the real story about Barack Obama's birth certificate because Harris. Amy Kremer, a GOP Committeewoman from Georgia, is the sucker born every minute. A liberal trolls the idiot Jack Posobiec by saying she'll have an abortion and a vasectomy onstage at the DNC and Kremer believes her. And Stephen L. Miller - the "other" Stephen Miller - uses the c-word about Mallory McMorrow with no self-awareness that it's used about him. C-Block (37:10) THINGS I PROMISED NOT TO TELL: It was a lovely day in Fun City yesterday so I was out all day and I walked right past it: the bar out of which George Steinbrenner stepped one night in 1981 after I had spent the day trying to find... Finding your way to the truth is the informal job of the 21st-century citizen. All of us. Show Notes: Tom Hughes initially planned to pursue an MD, PhD, and work on multiple sclerosis, but decided against it due to his poor chemistry skills. Instead, he focused on being an English professor, inspired by his father, who had been an English professor. During his senior year, his brother joined him and encouraged him to pursue his passion for acting. Tom auditioned for two of his favorite plays, The Lion in Winter and The Foreigner, and was cast in both of them. This was a rare moment in life where everything fell in his direction, and he was cast in all of the shows he auditioned for. He then decided to focus on his English major and thesis work. Tom recounts his journey from being a singer in The Pudding to auditioning for a production of Dangerous Liaisons. He was inspired by his love for theater and the Utah Shakespeare Festival, which he had attended every year with his family. After graduation, he moved to New York and started working off Broadway. He auditioned for Harvard's ART Institute and  moved back to Cambridge. In between these years, he met a woman, got engaged and married. They moved back to New York, and Tom continued auditioning and getting small film gigs. He went back to Columbia for a master's degree in organizational organizational psychology, which eventually led to a position at Booz Allen consulting firm. Tom moved on and worked for Duke corporate education for seven years before moving to the Carlsbad California office. They stayed there for another three years before being laid off during a downsizing. This led to establishing his own business, he partnered with another friend and colleague to form a small consulting firm, and this is their 11th year working for themselves.  A Conversation about a Theatrical Background Tom discusses his avocation in the theater, mentioning his father's audiobook recording as a fun outlet. He directed one show and a radio show version of It's a Wonderful Life, but he found this was not for him and decided to stay with acting. Tom's wife is actively involved with the theater, and Tom talks about how she worked on a show during COVID-19 restrictions; this led to a part for Tom which led to directing a radio show.  Tom finds the theater experience enjoyable and has worked with amazing people and talented people in the community. He believes that the experience should be about the show rather than the social aspect.    Community Theater vs. Professional Theater Tom talks about the difference between community theater and professional theater which are two distinct aspects of the arts. Community theater is about the community, where friends perform for the benefit of the community, rather than aiming to become Hollywood stars. Professional theaters are more prepared, have worked before, and have more rehearsal time. They come with a different tool set, such as singers, actors, and professionals who know their craft. In community theaters, people often don't even write down their blocking notes, which can be frustrating for those who don't have the time to practice. Professional theaters have a dedicated team, preparing and working on their craft, and have more time for rehearsal. They also have a better tool set, such as experts in their craft. Mental Models and Acting Tom discusses his mental models and how his way of thinking changed from a junior in college to pursuing theater professionally. He shares two key lessons: the importance of listening and being present for others, which is crucial for success in the industry. He shares a conversation with a colleague about a famous breakup in Hollywood and how it can be difficult to stay faithful without falling in love when playing an intensely romantic role with an attractive actor.  He also shares a lesson from a classmate, Glenn Kessler, who taught him that no way of working is always right. There is no style, approach, or version of oneself that will be right everywhere. Being a professional means doing what the job calls for, and it is freeing to feel like an asset and get rewarded for it. Acting Coach and Consultant Tom talks about his work as an acting coach and developing listening skills. In group settings, such as meetings, online learning, and virtual meetings, listening is crucial for effective communication. However, many people are not paying attention to others, leading to unsatisfying experiences and hindering learning. In coaching, listening and reflecting are essential for helping individuals think through their thoughts. Practicing listening and turning off the "I'm planning my response mechanism" can help create a more authentic and engaging interaction with the audience. By practicing and hearing people, one can create a more authentic and memorable experience for both the actor and the audience.  Tom started his consulting practice with a partner, Jared Blake, a Harvard EDD. During the COVID-19 pandemic, he and Blake started working independently, but later reconnected and decided to work together. They formed an entity and started marketing together, serving well-known brands like Nike. They both teach for various schools, including corporate education and the Texas A&M Executive Education program. They also provide individual coaching and advisory work on leadership development and coaching for clients. Influential Courses and Professors at Harvard Tom shares his experiences with courses and professors that have shaped his life. He mentions his experience in an organic chemistry course, where he was told that it probably wasn't for him.  He also took a class from Joe Harris on Norse mythology. He was also accepted into a graduate seminar with Barbara Lewalski, who was a brilliant and challenging professor. Tom also talks about his experience working in law as an undergraduate, and why he decided this path was not for him after working on a murder case.  Timestamps: 02:31 Acting career and personal life 09:49 Career transitions and theater involvement 15:29 Professional vs. community theater experiences 21:04 Acting techniques and personal growth 26:32 Active listening and its importance in professional settings 31:45 Career transition and leadership development with a Harvard MBA 35:45 Academic experiences and career choices 41:28 Legal system, theater, and personal experiences Links: Website: www.appianleadership.com LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/tom-hughes-5955a7/ Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/appian_leadership/ Utah Shakespeare Festival: https://www.bard.org/

SEASON 2 EPISODE 28: COUNTDOWN WITH KEITH OLBERMANN A-Block (1:43) SPECIAL COMMENT: I call for the immediate arrest of Congresswoman Marjorie Taylor Greene, representative of the 14th district of Georgia, for violating 18 US code 871 – “Threats against the President and Successors to the Presidency.” Greene has posted to social media video of a direct threat to harm or kill Joe Biden, made by a man who when asked about that threat of personal violence replied “I don't regret nothing I said. I (effing) mean it, bro." Greene's own ignorance of the federal code dealing with threats against the President is no defense. 18 U-S code 871 quite clearly states that the threat does NOT have to be first-hand. Greene does not have to have said it, she merely has to have distributed the threat. Though she helpfully began her distribution and promulgation of the threat against Biden's life with her own statement: “I agree with this man.” At some point we have to break Greene - and the fascist right's - dance along the cliff-edge of political violence. Just two weeks ago she rightly complained that violent threats against her had gotten a weak three-month sentence. Now, the threat she distributed should be met by her being charged, arrested, convicted, and sentenced to the maximum of five years. Because occasionally the Justice System works. "Enrique" Tarrio broke the January 6 record with a 22-year sentence (though take the odds and bet on Trump getting more). And let's hear it for my new hero, Secretary of the Navy Carlos Del Toro, who was born in Cuba and who accused political ignoramus and stunter Tommy Tuberville of more than even endangering national security by holding up military promotions. “For someone who was born in a communist country," said Secretary Del Toro, "I would never have imagined that actually one of our own senators would actually be aiding and abetting communists and other autocratic regimes around the world.” And there is more on the 14th Amendment, now the flavor of the month in the media. Michigan's Secretary of State Jocelyn Benson makes an interesting revelation: “Secretaries of states of multiple states are having conversations. I'm talking with folks in Pennsylvania, with the secretary of state in Nevada and even in Maine; people in Georgia of course – my colleague Brad Raffensberger – just to get a sense of what the facts are” and she added that a group of states quote “likely need to act in concert, if we act at all.” B-Block (21:10) THE WORST PERSONS IN THE WORLD: I'm somewhat limited by a throat infection, but here are Anthony Rendon of baseball's Angels who can't play due to a string of injuries (it happens) but refuses to talk about it (it's inexcusable), Washington Post "Fact Checker" Glenn Kessler, and the Saudi Prince who's trying to choose our president for us and whose exports to this country we should cut off and whose assets here we should seize. C-Block (29:12) THINGS I PROMISED NOT TO TELL: Yesterday was the 15th anniversary of the night the Republican Party and Tom Brokaw got me fired as the co-anchor of MSNBC's 2008 Presidential Debate coverage because the Republicans told Brokaw do this or McCain won't show up for the debate you inherited when Tim Russert died and Brokaw really wanted a second career after Brian Williams had buried his first career alive and threw me under the bus even though I had welcomed him to our MSNBC campaign coverage when NBC had literally benched him for the '08 campaign.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Greg Dworkin has a theme today, but it wasn't UFO-mania, or even Rudy Colludy's confession. Seems the Ron DeSantis campaing is sinking like a stone. Staff are being cut (some more pointedly than others), plagued by an horrific burn rate, terrible polls, and of course, his latest “education” disaster (which, thank God, even some conservatives find appalling) all combined to leave “DeSantis in Disarray.” In other good news, apparently there were eight subpoenas served in TFG's Perv-a-Lago documents case. Even better, the youngs are smart and have their heads screwed on right. Tommy Tuberville is a jerk for many, many reasons. But there's at least one new one that Glenn Kessler thinks is important enough to call him out about, but refuses (for some strange reason) to invoke the “dreaded” Pinocchio count for. We headed back to Ohio for more on their convoluted ballot initiative battle. Depending on who you are, Ohio's Gop either desperately wants you to believe the August vote is about abortion and nothing else, or alternatively, not about abortion at all, thank you very much. And speaking of heading back, we pulled a procedural U-turn to revisit our own wild speculation about the effect of a government shutdown on the lunatic Gop's impeachment plans. Did you miss any of The Rich Zeoli Show this week? It's ok. We forgive you. But now is your chance to catch-up on all the action: On Tuesday night, Pennsylvanians elected Democrat John Fetterman to the U.S. Senate. With 94% of the vote reporting, according to the Associated Press, Fetterman leads Dr. Mehmet Oz 50.5% to 47.1%. In the state's Gubernatorial race, Democrat Josh Shapiro easily defeated Republican Doug Mastriano—current reporting has Shapiro leading by over 700,000 votes. Why did Republicans underperform in Tuesday's midterm elections? Did abortion play a larger role in Pennsylvania than many were expecting? Did candidate quality doom Republicans? Henry attempts to select a film for today's Movie Mystery Clip, but Rich and Matt have never heard of his choice, “My Left Foot"—it's likely no one else on the planet has heard of it either! The segment quickly devolves into chaos. Marc Joffe—Policy Analyst at the CATO Institute—joins The Rich Zeoli Show to discuss his latest editorial for National Review, “Is the Biden Administration Creating a Medicaid Fiscal Cliff?” Joffe writes: “By continuing to needlessly extend the Covid-19 state of emergency, the Biden administration is making Medicaid even more financially unsustainable than it already was.” According to data from the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS), more than a quarter of “Americans are now enrolled in Medicaid or CHIP.” Could this rapid expansion lead to single-payer healthcare? Read more at: https://www.nationalreview.com/2022/11/is-the-biden-administration-creating-a-medicaid-fiscal-cliff/ The Washington Post's Glenn Kessler awarded President Joe Biden a “bottomless Pinocchio” for not only making grossly misleading statements but repeating the falsehoods routinely. For example, Biden claimed he has spent “more time with Xi Jinping than any other head of state” and has traveled more than “17,000 miles with him.” Kessler points out that not only are these claims false, but he has repeated the claim 21 times! According to the WaPo, Biden has also lied about the price of gas, student debt forgiveness, and Social Security cost-of-living increases. Clarice Schillinger—former candidate for Pennsylvania Lieutenant Governor & Executive Director of Back to School U.S.A.—joins The Rich Zeoli Show to discuss her latest opinion editorial at Broad + Liberty, “The Pennsylvania GOP is a Dumpster Fire.”Read more at: https://broadandliberty.com/2022/11/09/beth-ann-rosica-and-clarice-schillinger-the-pennsylvania-gop-is-a-dumpster-fire/

3:05pm- Last week, the Pennsylvania Supreme Court ruled that election officials cannot count mail-in ballots that are incorrectly dated. On Sunday, Senator Bob Casey Jr. (D-PA) warned that “hundreds of mail-in ballots have been reported as incorrectly dated.”    3:15pm- With recent polling indicating voters prefer Republican candidates in the November 8th midterms, Democrats have begun to emphasize their belief that democracy could fall under GOP leadership. Will their unsubstantiated hysterics be enough to change the minds of swing voters?   3:25pm- On Friday, President Joe Biden stated he wanted to shutdown coal plants “across America.” While speaking at a rally for Governor Kathy Hochul at Sarah Lawrence College in New York, Biden also vowed to end drilling for oil domestically. Recognizing the President's proclamations to end domestically produced fossil fuels could be harmful to Democrat candidates just days before the 2022 midterms, White House Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre claimed, Biden's “words were twisted.”    3:40pm- Charles McElwee—Editor of Real Clear Pennsylvania—joins The Rich Zeoli Show to discuss his latest editorial, “Voter Sentiment in PA Suggests a Republican Year.” McElwee warns that due to presumed complications with mail-in ballots and a divided Pennsylvania Supreme Court, the U.S. Senate race between John Fetterman and Dr. Mehmet Oz could end with a series of lawsuits that are ultimately heard by the U.S. Supreme Court.    4:05pm- The Washington Post's Glenn Kessler awarded President Joe Biden a “bottomless Pinocchio” for not only making grossly misleading statements but repeating the falsehoods routinely. Will those proclamations hurt Democrats in the November 8th midterm elections?   5:10- While speaking at the United Nations, Secretary-General Antonio Guterres stated that Russia's war in Ukraine has “exposed the profound weakness of our fossil fuel addiction”—warning that the world is on a “highway to climate hell.”   5:30pm- Chef Boyardee was awarded The Gold Star from the United States military for his tireless efforts to keep American troops fed during World War II. Who knew?    5:45pm- House Democratic Whip James Clyburn said that if Republicans win big in the 2022 midterms, it could be the end of the world—then, while on Fox News, he denied ever saying it, but did compare voting for Republicans to voting for Nazis…   6:05pm- Rich finds out he is being bumped for Temple basketball! The CDC’s Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices (ACIP) is scheduled to meet on Wednesday and Thursday to discuss, amongst other topics, whether to include the Covid vaccines and other vaccinations into their child and adolescent immunization schedule. According to WBOY, the CDC is considering adding the vaccine to their schedule in order for it to be covered under the federally-funded Vaccines for Children (VFC) Program and other programs. In order for vaccines to be covered under health plans, shots must be approved by the CDC director, and appear on the CDC’s immunization schedule, according to a document from the CDC. According to the CDC, VFC is a federally funded program that provides vaccines to children at no cost to families. The CDC’s immunization schedule for kids is seen as a recommendation for parents and physicians on when certain vaccines should be administered. The schedule also serves as a building block for school districts nationwide, many of whom chose to follow these guidelines as requirements for children to enter public schools. The inclusion of the Covid-19 vaccine on this schedule could give the green signal for school districts to enforce mandates on their students, with some schools across the country pausing their mandates over low vaccination numbers in minors. Many European nations have said that Covid vaccines are not necessary for children. https://thepostmillennial.com/abc-news-investigative-producer-disappears-after-fbi-raid?utm_campaign=64487 ABC News investigative producer disappears after FBI raid, was working on book about Biden’s Afghanistan withdrawal An award-winning ABC News national security investigative producer has seemingly gone missing following an FBI raid on his home in April for unclear reasons. James Gordon Meek was in the process of writing a book on the Biden administration's controversial withdrawal from Afghanistan when his neighbors spotted armored vehicles outside of his home, and he hasn't been heard from since. Meek, 52, was best known for his breaking news stories on high levels of corruption within the US military. His bombshell report of the Army’s coverup of the fratricidal death of Pfc. Dave Sharrett II in Iraq landed Meek a meeting with then-President Obama. He seemed to be at the height of his career, with nine years at ABC, a newly-released documentary on Hulu, and a book on the way. That's why so many are baffled at his mysterious and uncharacteristically abrupt disappearance. It was on April 27 of this year when police cruisers and unmarked utility vehicles were spotted blocking the street outside of Meek's Arlington, Virginia apartment building, according to a Rolling Stone report. That was around the time of his last online activity, with one last "like" being sent from his Twitter account on May 2. Since then, he's been silent. An FBI representative confirmed that agents were present that morning "at the 2300 block of Columbia Pike, Arlington, Virginia, conducting court-authorized law-enforcement activity." "The FBI cannot comment further due to an ongoing investigation," they said. A federal magistrate judge signed off on the search warrant the day before the raid. In accordance with a new policy enacted last year, federal prosecutors are not allowed to seize journalists' documents without approval from the Deputy Attorney General, meaning that Biden-appointed Lisa Monaco had to have given her blessing if that's what the raid was for. Despite the bureau's involvement, Meek has not been charged with any crime. Anonymous sources claimed to Rolling Stone that federal agents found classified information on Meek's laptop, but the contents of said information are unknown at this time. His lawyer, Eugene Gorokhov, responded to the claims. "Mr. Meek is unaware of what allegations anonymous sources are making about his possession of classified documents. If such documents exist, as claimed, this would be within the scope of his long career as an investigative journalist covering government wrongdoing. The allegations in your inquiry are troubling for a different reason: they appear to come from a source inside the government. It is highly inappropriate, and illegal, for individuals in the government to leak information about an ongoing investigation. We hope that the DOJ [Department of Justice] promptly investigates the source of this leak." Still, no comment on where exactly his client is. https://hotair.com/ed-morrissey/2022/10/19/abrams-you-can-fight-inflation-by-aborting-more-babies-you-know-n504398 Stacey Abrams suggests having an abortion as solution to inflation: 'Economic realities of having a child' Democratic Georgia gubernatorial candidate Stacey Abrams was criticized on Wednesday after suggesting that having an abortion could be a solution to high inflation and claiming that "having children" is why people are worried about the price of gas and groceries. https://twitter.com/i/status/1582726622859624449 - Play Video 0:00-1:32 Abrams made her remarks a day after President Biden pledged that if Democrats keep control of Congress, he will codify in January the federal right to abortion once granted by the recently overturned Roe v. Wade Supreme Court decision. At no point during the speech did the president, who was a freshman senator nearly 50 years ago when Roe v. Wade was decided in January 1973, mention inflation or the economy. The same day, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) rejected a New York Times poll that found voters believe the economy and inflation are the top two issues facing the nation, calling it an “outlier.” Abrams said at the end of September that there was "no such thing" as a fetal heartbeat at 6-weeks. https://thepoliticalinsider.com/fake-news-zelenskys-famous-quote-of-need-ammunition-not-a-ride-never-happened/ Fake News: Zelensky’s Famous Quote of ‘Need Ammunition, Not a Ride’ Never Happened A senior official claims that a famous quote by Ukrainian president Volodymyr Zelensky appears to be fake news, war propaganda. The quote about needing ammunition helped catapult his credentials as a defiant wartime leader. The revelation came amidst a sprawling report by the New Yorker on the Biden administration’s support for Ukraine, which is far more extensive than previously known and includes operational planning at the highest levels. But Zelensky’s famous line – “I need ammunition, not a ride” – and the fact that it may have been completely fabricated and promoted by the media ad nauseam casts a further pall on a war narrative that has at times seemed crafted by the heavy hand of a former actor. From the New Yorker: Two days into the invasion, the Associated Press reported that Zelensky had rejected a U.S. offer to evacuate him from Kyiv, saying, “I need ammunition, not a ride.” A senior U.S. official said, “To the best of my knowledge, that never happened.” The official added, “But hats off to Zelensky and the people around him. It was a great line.” If you’re searching for evidence that the American media are perfectly fine with helping to perpetuate falsehoods in the war effort in Ukraine, you need look no further than the Washington Post and fact-checker Glenn Kessler. Kessler analyzed the claim that Zelensky had uttered the quote: “I need ammunition, not a ride.” Though he admitted the claim was not easily verifiable, he concluded using Zelensky’s press secretary that “the quote, even if not accurate, reflects the moment.” At least he tried. The rest of the media simply ran with it. This isn’t the first time stories coming out of Ukraine had proven to be completely orchestrated in an effort to drum up emotional support from the United States. Around the same time as the Zelensky ‘ammunition’ quote, a story was developing about a defiant group of 13 Ukrainian border guards defending Snake Island in the Black Sea who reportedly told a Russian warship to “go f*** yourself” after being ordered to surrender. The 13 Ukrainian border guards were initially widely reported as killed as the Russian warship opened fire with barreled guns and aircraft bombing Snake Island. Zelenskyy said during a press briefing that the guards died “heroes” and even said the 13 would be posthumously awarded the title of Hero of Ukraine. It was later reported they were still alive and in Russian captivity. Then, of course, there is the infamous ‘Ghost of Kyiv‘ propaganda promoted by some prominent figures here in the United States. Some, like Rep. Adam Kinzinger, were so willing to believe the story they promoted fake images of a meme-character known as Samuel Hyde. It’s breathtaking the number of stories like the Zelensky ammunition fairytale that have been thrust upon the American people as a means to justify the absurd level of financial and military support being offered to Ukraine at our expense. Fox News host Tucker Carlson has seemingly had enough, eviscerating Zelensky for making further outrageous demands for financial aid while the United States economy, and the American people, are suffering. https://twitter.com/i/status/1580717198703611904 - Play Video “Zelenskyy is now shaking down our cowardly Congress for more cash at the very moment our own economy and our own borders are collapsing,” Carlson added. Georgia Democrat candidate for Governor Stacy Abrams claimed ultrasound technology was developed to allow men to control women's bodies. She told a panel discussion, "There is no such thing as a heartbeat at six weeks. It is a manufactured sound designed to convince people that men have the right to take control of a woman's body." Washington Post "fact checker" Glenn Kessler sprang to action... to defend Abrams. FWIW, "fetal heartbeat" is a misnomer. The ultrasound picks up electrical activity generated by an embryo. The so-called "heartbeat" sound you hear is created by the ultrasound. Not until 10 weeks can the opening and closing of cardiac valves be detected by a Doppler machine. Which prompted a response from an actual doctor: Radiologist Pradheep J. Shanker quickly pointed out that Kessler has no idea what he is talking about: "Glenn… This is scientifically and medically incorrect. 100%. Ultrasound can't detect electrical activity. Who told you otherwise?" He said the NPR article Kessler cited was wrong. “Ultrasound only detects density and motion. It cannot detect any electrical activity at all. This is a scientific fact,” Shanker declared. “It is true that the valves in the heart develop later. However, the cardiac muscles that are located in the embryological heart are contracting. They are in fact moving inward and outward. That is how you define a beat.” He conceded that a fetal heartbeat isn't the same as a fully developed adult heartbeat but added, “the cardiac tissue is contracting, which is literally what a beat is. To say otherwise is scientific misinformation, and cannot be treated otherwise.” Much like the former candidate for Senate in Missouri lost his race after making comments about "legitimate rape" not leading to pregnancy, Abrams probably had made these comments to political allies. And she probably never had pushback from those folks. Unchallenged ideas are easy to hold.  Get exclusive content here!: https://thepetekalinershow.com/See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Sam and Emma host Ryan Grim, DC Bureau Chief at The Intercept, to round up the week in news. Then, they're joined by Matthew Film Guy! First, however, Sam and Emma dive into the Indiana AG's investigation into the 10 y/o rape victim's doctor, the Secret Service deleting texts from 1/6, Starbucks Workers United's new series of complaints to the NLRB, and Joe Biden's arrival in Saudi Arabia, before diving deeper into the response from GOP Leadership in Ohio and Indiana (and nationally) to immediately question the story of a 10 y/o's rape, despite its common occurrence in Ohio, before shifting to a “well it's not really an abortion if it's a child” talking point in the wake of the story's confirmation. Then, they're joined by Ryan Grim as they dive into Eric Swalwell's questioning of Catherine Glenn Foster, CEO and President of Americans United for Life, comparing the right's rhetoric to that of the Salem Witch trials (whose legal authors happened to have been cited by Justice Alito) in how they define concepts in a way that determines their outcome (if it's legal it's not abortion, if it's illegal it is), looking back to Todd Akin's statements on “legitimate rape” and the immediate backlash he faced in comparison to today's embrace of fundamentalism. Expanding on this, they take on the tactic of fear-mongering with medical professionals, as seen in the attacks on the 10 y/o's abortion provider, and how they seek to pretend some reproductive care is legitimate while clearly attempting to eradicate any access to such care, then shifting the conversation to the role of the US media and how ill-fitted it is to respond to this moment, from the Washington Post's Glenn Kessler's legitimization of the right's attempts to undermine this story (even though children under 15 receive abortions about once per week in Ohio) to the greater issue of media having no actual access to emerging stories – especially when potential sources are under intense legal pressure to stay silent. Next, they dive into state-level fights to preserve abortion, including Kansas' attempt to latch on to the “medical freedom” talking point, despite its role in undermining trust in medical care, and look at how this evangelical fundamentalism will continue to target social groups they want to police. Wrapping up the interview they tackle the Democrats' inability to take responsibility for Manchin and Sinema, both in terms of getting them on board with the party and disciplining them for their departures, and set up what to expect for the upcoming midterm election. The great Matthew Film Guy then joins as he discusses his discovery of the niche early 2000s indie production “Mean Girls,” discusses his ever-burgeoning film projects, and dives into the work of Hou Hsiao-hsien. And in the Fun Half: Sam and Emma discuss the Biden Administration's response to Roe being overturned, the importance of Janeane Garofalo, and the threats against Pramila Jayapal that seem to fly under the media's radar. Tim Pool doesn't believe the pregnant 10-year-old was raped, Sam and Emma tackle the lie of the “last liberal,” Ben Shapiro's pretend ignorance of his stochastic terrorism having a genuine impact on the well-being of trans people, and Snooki becomes a central endorsement in the PA Gov race. In the first episode of Not Censored Yet, we fact check the Washington Post's Glenn Kessler and expose his fabrication of an alternative truth. Kessler uses outdated sources to pretend as if a member of ANTIFA didn't murder a Trump supporter on August 29th 2020 (story's source was from June 22nd, 2020). Kessler then suffers from availability bias when he forgets to hit the rewind button when covering an interview with (now) President-elect Joe Biden and possibly fails to understand basic conversational English.

How many Pinocchios this time? That's what Glenn Kessler decides. President Trump keeps the chief writer of the WashPost's The Fact Checker blog very busy. Kessler tells Brian Stelter about the Post's measurement of Trump's 3,000 "false or misleading claims" and gets into the debate about whether to call something a "lie." Kessler also explains why he prefers "divided government" and what he misses about previous administrations. To learn more about how CNN protects listener privacy, visit cnn.com/privacy
