PUBLIC VERSION. Filmmaker Zach Clark (THE BECOMERS, LITTLE SISTER, WHITE REINDEER) joins Adam and Joe to discuss his career journey and the making of his new Sci-Fi feature. From cutting his teeth in editing and how that impacted his directing craft… to his love and admiration for Russ Meyers and John Waters films… to his drive to go more “hard” genre and the classic films that inspired his alien invasion/body swap/love story/goo covered THE BECOMERS… to how COVID casually worked its way into the writing and shooting of the film… to comfort foods and how he deals with notes from peers… to a hint at his new project (a “castle horror” type film)… Zach is a truly inspiring voice on the indie scene.

Independent filmmaker Zach Clark joins to discuss the work of punk auteur legend Jon Moritsugu and his 1994 cult favorite Mod Fuck Explosion. A riff on classic Hollywood tales like West Side Story, the film is brash, outrageous, occasionally reprehensible, and is (in Zach's words) less about teen angst so much as it simply *is* teen angst manifested onscreen. We first discuss the singular style of Moritsugu as filmmaker, his movies' no-budget charms, and how their hyper-stylized aesthetic, formalism, and performances turn the film's budgetary limitations into distinctive attributes that call attention to the their own artifice. Then, we discuss Mod Fuck Explosion's brilliance as a totem of 90s teen ennui and an interrogation of Moritsugu's career-long targets such as the prison of domesticity, anti-Asian racism, and gender roles. Finally, we discuss why the film's of Moritsugu transcend basic descriptiors like satire and camp, embracing genuine sincerity and uncovering deep emotional truths with a commendable level of vulnerabiltiy. On the back half of the show, we spend some time discussing Zach's new film The Becomers, a 21st century take on science fiction B-movies about body snatching aliens finding love in the time of COVID. For all the glühwein and good cheer, mid-December also marks the darkest part of the year, when families around the world gather to watch their favorite holiday ghost story: A Christmas Carol. Easily the most famous spooky Yuletide movie, it is by no means the only one: Black Christmas was arguably the first American slasher movie; the mischievous creatures from Gremlins squealed their way into many hearts in 1984; and the Alpine Krampus has more credits to his name than Santa has reindeer. For generations, the heart of winter—not Halloween—was when we told unsettling stories around the fire, whether they featured the ghosts of our own pasts or Gryla the Icelandic ogre and her evil Yule cat. This week on Smarty Pants, writer and director Kier-La Janisse offers a primer on how these stories have found their way onto the screen, from annual BBC television specials to big-budget Hollywood bloodbaths.Go beyond the episode:Kier-La Janisse's Yuletide Terror, co-edited with Paul Corupe, is out of print, but her House of Psychotic Women, an “autobiographical topography of female neurosis in horror and exploitation films” was just released in an expanded editionJanisse's documentary Woodlands Dark and Days Bewitched is a thorough history of folk horror, which makes its way to the holidays with movies like Krampus (2015) and Rare Exports (2010), and wintry tales like Marketa Lazarová (1967), The White Reindeer (1952), Hagazussa (2017), and November (2017)You can watch the newest episode of the BBC's anthology series A Ghost Story for Christmas on Britbox. With the winter season fading away, The Winter of Folk Horror is thawing along with it. And while you might think that we're going out with a winter whimper, covering only three titles, we're actually going out with a buttery bang! More on that shortly. But first, Finland. Reindeer are everywhere! And much to the Common Craig's dismay, Santa is nowhere to be found. But amongst all of these reindeer, it's that special white variety of which you may want to take notice. If not, you may just fall victim to its vampiric powers, in The White Reindeer (1952)! From snowy Finland, we travel to Oregon. And there we find one of the most hopeless, depressing towns in the history of cinema. The inhabitants are probably so despondent, because at any second they could become a meal for an ancient creature with ties to cannibalism. You know, I've heard nice things about Oregon, but Antlers (2021) may delay a visit even further. And then from there, on to Iceland and the terrifying aspect of livestock horror. Do you know where YOUR butter comes from? And how to reveal its potentially evil origin? If you're not sure how to answer those questions, you should probably listen to our discussion on Tilbury (1987). Until you do, stop licking that butter!

Surprise Johnson Insertion This week Mick and Graham go to "Hellboy" and back (which is pretty easy given that the cinema is just a short walk away), to report on Neil Marshall's euphemistically-described troubled production.  Is it as bad as the internet's made out, or do they want to give it a big hand? Off the Shelf sees a very different kind of folklore film in the shape of "The White Reindeer" - a Finnish vampire-witch-were-reindeer movie (it's a genre, OK?), that has been reissued on Blu-Ray by Eureka. Then Mick cleans up after another Eureka title with Lewis Teague's "Cujo", in which Stephen King shows us a very bad doggp indeed.  Next week's Eclectica has been turned into dust by a snap of Thanos's fingers, but we'll be back in two week's time for Avengers: Endgame!
