Independent filmmaker Zach Clark joins to discuss the work of punk auteur legend Jon Moritsugu and his 1994 cult favorite Mod Fuck Explosion. A riff on classic Hollywood tales like West Side Story, the film is brash, outrageous, occasionally reprehensible, and is (in Zach's words) less about teen angst so much as it simply *is* teen angst manifested onscreen. We first discuss the singular style of Moritsugu as filmmaker, his movies' no-budget charms, and how their hyper-stylized aesthetic, formalism, and performances turn the film's budgetary limitations into distinctive attributes that call attention to the their own artifice. Then, we discuss Mod Fuck Explosion's brilliance as a totem of 90s teen ennui and an interrogation of Moritsugu's career-long targets such as the prison of domesticity, anti-Asian racism, and gender roles. Finally, we discuss why the film's of Moritsugu transcend basic descriptiors like satire and camp, embracing genuine sincerity and uncovering deep emotional truths with a commendable level of vulnerabiltiy. On the back half of the show, we spend some time discussing Zach's new film The Becomers, a 21st century take on science fiction B-movies about body snatching aliens finding love in the time of COVID. The Becomers is out on VOD today! In this episode, I had that privilege of chatting to Amy Davis from the podcast Generate Joy. We unpack what habits are, why they matter, how we can make them and how they can bring us closer to God and help us disciple our kids. Amy shares that the word habit used to be a trigger word for her. She thought it was restrictive and meant there would be no time for fun. But after implementing simple habits, she discovered the opposite. Habits created freedom in her day to do more of what she loved. They helped her in her relationship with God, and helped her point her kids to Jesus. If you've been on the fence about implementing habits, this episode will totally shift your mindset. I pray this episode blesses you as much as it did me! XO Deb Connect with me on Instagram, or join the Facebook community here. Email me: heymamasmission@gmail.com or join the weekly newsletter here. In our fast-paced Western culture, it's too easy to run to the next “thing” and dismiss the meaning of the previous activity, event, or season. But is this healthy for our souls? Take breastfeeding, for example. Or sending your kids off to kindergarten. Or for your kids, leaving their grandparent's house after an extended vacation. Perhaps moving to a new house. Every one of these moments are beautiful, but also have an end, a transition that includes a goodbye. In this episode, theologian and professor Amy Davis Abdallah joins us to provide a framework for putting meaning to all of the life transitions we experience on a daily, weekly, monthly, and yearly basis. The author of Meaning in the Moment: How Rituals Help Us Move Through Joy, Pain, and Everything in Between, Abdallah describes how rituals can shape our family and form the hearts of our kids.In this episode, Amy describes:The meaning and purpose of a ritualHow we've embraced cultural rituals, yet rarely think of them for our own lives Simple ways you can create rituals for your kids to honor life transitionsHow simple rituals can help us hold grief and joy at the same timeShow Notes:Order a copy of Meaning in the Moment by Amy F. Today's episode touches on some highly sensitive but really important topics--domestic abuse, relapse, and death to name a few. It is a story that must be told so the shame and stigma of violence and addiction loses its power over us individually and as a collective. Part one of Amy's story describes how it all began---the addiction, the rock bottom, and the journey into early sobriety. Stay tuned for Part two, where we discover what was behind the curtain of her tumultuous marriage and how she has survived abuse, loss and single parenting. More About my:Amy Davis is a sober single mother and interior designer. After spending her twenties and early thirties partying, she realized she would never live up to her full potential nor have her “happily ever after” if she kept on the same path. And on the outside it looked like she found it. But behind closed doors it quickly became a marriage fueled by domestic violence, drug and alcohol addition, financial secrecy, pathological behavior, and extreme familial enablement. After fleeing her marriage with their three year old daughter during covid, she navigated the often unfair and very expensive world of family law using every dollar she had with the support of her family and friends to secure full custody, never giving up hope he would find sobriety and peace. But one month after her divorce was finalized, her ex-husband died from a drug overdose exposing widespread financial deception and enablement, leaving her and her daughter drowning in devastating grief, loss, and confusion. Catapulted back into the legal worlds of family law and estate and probate law, the past 15 months have been very dark, but time and healing, have allowed light to pierce that darkness giving way to moments of joy and excitement for the unknown inspite of difficulties. She is learning that speaking up about her experience is taking away her story's power over her while also helping others. Amy is passionate about de-stigmatizing the taboo topic of domestic violence which often victim-blames and bringing awareness to how dangerous, and sometimes deadly, enablement is when it comes to both domestic and substance abuse. She is also learning that “Happily Ever After” has nothing to do with what is on the outside, but everything to do with one's own character, honor, morality, ethics, self-love, self-respect, and self-forgiveness. On this episode of the podcast, I talk with Dr. Amy Davis Abdallah about her new book, Meaning in the Moment: How Rituals Help Us Move Through Joy, Pain, and Everything in Between. It's a conversation about the power of ritual and how rituals help us find meaning and direction as we face endings, middles, and new beginnings. Among the topics we discuss: Why some people fear and might be suspicious of "ritual" How we already ritualize (though we may not call it that) Fascinating psychological research on the power of rituals, and how even calling something a ritual may increase its potency. How our rituals may go wrong and become "empty" What sorts of things we should ritualize, and what it means to create powerful rituals. Dr. Abdallah shares a powerful story about living in NY during 9/11, and the role rituals played in the aftermath. She also takes time to lead us in an exercise at the end. Welcome back to our show! We are so excited to be back after taking a summer break! We have some amazing stories to share with all of you. Our first show this season is very special. Amy Davis, a longtime friend of both of us, joins us on our show today. Her story is full of both heartbreak and patient love; it is so inspiring and full of twists and turns. Amy's story sometimes seems like a novel. Amy grew up in OKC with her mom and step-dad. She was told many things about her birth father which led her to believe she would never get to know him. That all changed one day when he reached out to her while she was an adult. He explained the situation in a whole new light. Their story of reconnection and reconciliation is so beautiful, and could only be explained because of a Heavenly Father who has always been looking out for her and writing her story. You will love the grace and love that comes through in this powerful conversation! #afrayedknotpodcast #reconciliation #friends #family #nevergiveuphope #Psalm46:10BestillandknowthatIamGod

Also, we're hosting our 2023 Bird of the Year party in Nashville, Tennessee! More information to come.
