EPISODE 17 - “It's All About Character (Female)” - 01/08/2024 In the film Mildred Pierce (1945), EVE ARDEN manages to steal almost every scene she's in. And, while talking with JOAN CRAWFORD's Mildred about her spoiled, bratty daughter, Veda (ANN BLYTH), she even delivers the film's most iconic line, “Personally, Veda's convinced me that alligators have the right idea. They eat their young.” That is the power of a skilled character actress. Their scenes might be limited, and their names may not be above the title, but with the lift of an eyebrow, the purse of a lip, or the widening of their eyes, they can pull focus and make you forget all about the stars. In this week's episode, we discuss the illustrious careers and lives of some of the finest character actresses to ever work in film. New York-based writer Ashley Reese joins us for our a very special Christmas installment of Denzember as we discuss Penny Marshall's 1996 romantic comedy 'The Preachers Wife'. We discuss the film as a metatextual exploration of Denzel Washington's celebrity image as well as part of Whitney's second leg as an international superstar and actress. We also discuss the film's monumental soundtrack, sung by Whitney herself, an album that remains the best selling gospel record of all time. Finally we discuss the flattening effect of family films of the era (especially those produced by Touchstone/Disney) and how they tend to flirt with societal issues while reaffirming the system that causes them. For our December 2023 Special Subject, we're having ourselves a Monty Woolley Christmas! We look at three Christmas-adjacent movies from the 1940s featuring the anti-Santa in roles big and small: The Man Who Came to Dinner, in which he stars as waspish radio personality Sheridan Whiteside, who takes over the home of a bourgeois Middle American couple; Life Begins at Eight-Thirty, in which he plays a great actor who's been broken by alcoholism; and The Bishop's Wife, in which he adds some New York Bohemian intellectual colour to the holiday classic. We discuss the cultural and political implications of The Man Who Came to Dinner and the uncanniness of Cary Grant and debate the appeal of alcoholism. Then in Fear and Moviegoing in Toronto, we briefly discuss Ernst Lubitsch's Cluny Brown (fully discussed in our Jennifer Jones series) and a new release, a Christmas movie even darker than our Monty Woolleys, William Oldroyd's Eileen, starring Thomasin McKenzie and Anne Hathaway (a rare spoiler-free exchange of impressions from us). And as a bonus, we become possessed by the spirit of Monty Woolley and rant about how much we hate contemporary movie trailers. (No analysis, just invective.) Happy Holidays! Book Vs. Movie: The Bishop's WifeThe 1928 novel by Robert Nathan Vs. the 1947 Classic Cary Grant FilmIt's December at Book Vs. Movie, and we are excited about covering holiday-themed films, including this selection--The Bishop's Wife. The original novella was written by Robert Nathan in 1928 and is the story of a preacher, Henry Boughman, who dreams of building a huge cathedral at the expense of his relationship with his wife, Julia. An angel, Michael, appears to help Henry and his family learn that family & love is more important than status. In the meantime, Michael Falls in love with Julia and is distraught to hear they can never have a “mortal love.” Julia decides to try for another baby to fulfill her needs. The book is an exploration of faith with vivid conversations between the preacher and a Jewish businessman and Professor Wutheridge, who both wish to find out the source of why he is so single-focused on religious expression. The movie features child actors from the recently released It's a Wonderful Life. It took some liberties from the book and focused more on the possible romance of Julia and “Dudley” (Cary Grant in a typically amazing performance).” The film was directed by Henry Koster and stars David Niven and Loretta Young. So, which did we prefer between the original story and the movie? This episode is sponsored by Kensington's newest romance novel by acclaimed South African author Therese Beharrie, And They Lived Happily Ever After, about a romance novelist, Gaia Anders, who has an active dream life. Everything she dreams she puts into her stories doubles as her love life. Gaia's waking life can't compare to her dreams. Her childhood was incredibly lonely, and she is very shy about romance until she meets her best friend's brother, Jacob Scott. The Bishop's Wife will live a wonderful life… Well, once an angel comes to visit. Episcopalian Bishop Henry and his wife are on a quest to raise money for the new Church. Henry has become obsessed with raising funds which is hurting his family life. However, the angel's mission is not to help construct the Church, but alas, to spiritually guide Henry and the people around him. It's all angels in this week's clash.***Please rate and review us on Apple, Spotify or wherever you get your pods. It means a lot and makes it easy for other people to find us. Merry Clash Christmas to all who celebrate! In line with the festive season, what better way to mark the festive season than by pitting some of the most wondrous winter films against each other? Kicking us off in the red corner we have 1946's It's a Wonderful Life, the timeless classic that follows the life of a frustrated businessman who is visited by an angel. In the blue corner is 1947's The Bishop's Wife. The titles rhyme, what more could you want?***Please rate and review us on Apple, Spotify or wherever you get your pods. The 469th Ellises' Analysis and our first episode in December has us asking you to appreciate the irony of an atheist and an agnostic discussing a Christmas movie about a religious man and an angel. Cary Grant plays that divine being in The Bishop's Wife and he's given the job of trying to fix Loretta Young and David Niven's struggling marriage. It's a tricky story to tell because Young has to have romantic chemistry with Grant, but not too much. Bev doesn't think they walked that tightrope very well, nor was Grant given a role where he could truly excel. We both acknowledge Henry Koster's movie is fun though, even if the laughs didn't tickle us the way they probably made audiences guffaw 75 years ago. Actually, The Bishop's Wife has a layer of sadness to it, as many Christmas classics do. But you have no reason to be sad if you drink coffee. Everybody knows and loves George Stevens's Shane (1953) so much that its fights and characters have become something almost liturgical. Join Mike and Dan as they talk about how what we think of as a star vehicle for Alan Ladd is actually a terrific ensemble movie and how even the film's color scheme has affected our imaginations of the West. Pale Rider, The Departed, The Bishop's Wife, Unforgiven, the swinging doors that Dan's dad installed in their basement, and the poem "To Lucasta, On Going to the Wars" all enter the conversation. The guys also explain why there will never be a Shane 2: The Return. So uproot that stump, grab your soda pop and give it a listen! It's funny that in one's recovery from illness, the "band width" is still nowhere near what it used to be. I used to be able to read a novel by Dostoyevsky one week, then a book by Forde the next, then a novel by Cozzens the next. *Sayonara to that! *Now one is fortunate to be able to read The Runaway Bunny. So hey, I've gone back to reading in three-page spurts. And the perfect author for this "new way of walking, new way of talking" is... Robert Nathan. You remember Robert Nathan. He wrote The Bishop's Wife and Portrait of Jennie, to name just two of his roughly 40 or so fantasy novels. But the thing is, Robert Nathan's novels are all short -- more like novellas -- and they read like pudding, because he was an excellent and simple narrator. Anyway, I'm back to Nathan, like it or not; and today's cast updates you on this charming "Mid-Century" author. It is good to note, too, that Robert Nathan was Jewish but had zero chip on his shoulder. That may be because he was born into a wealthy Manhattan family and didn't feel he had to prove himself in the wider American scene. (We would say today that Nathan was a child of "privilege".) One corollary of Nathan's un-reactive growing up is that he was explicitly favorable to Christianity. You see this in several of his novels, and also in his poetry, which was much acclaimed on the home front during World War II. Well, that's lesson two for 2022, and I hope it's the second of many, for Mockingbird, in our New Year. LUV U.

This episode debuted exactly four years ago, and I could think of no better show this year to honor my all-time favorite movie, Frank Capra's It's a Wonderful Life (1947) through the eyes of two women with close ties to its creation. If Mr. Capra didn't write it, why do I call it “Frank Capra's It's a Wonderful Life? It's because that's how the movie was marketed, which helps explain why the film got only a so-so reception when it was first released. Most of Mr. Capra's pre-World War II movies were so sweet-hearted that they later earned the moniker “Capracorn,” not meant as a compliment. It's a Wonderful Life is one of the most critically acclaimed films ever made. Nominated for five Academy Awards including Best Picture, recognized by the American Film Institute as one of the 100 best American films ever made, and placed number 11 on its initial 1998 greatest movie list, it also ranked number one on its list of the most inspirational American films of all time. Think about that. In light of the fact that hundreds of thousands of movies have been made, this is a jaw-dropping achievement. By the end of the Second World War, though, the mood of the movie-going public had shifted, as I wrote about the making of the movie in National Review a few years ago HERE. The next day after it was published, an appreciative email from a woman named Mary Owen arrived in my inbox. Turns out, Mary is the daughter of actress Donna Reed, who played Mary Bailey, the wife of James Stewart's George Bailey. I thanked her for the lovely email and we had a few back-and-forths. After my podcast was up on two feet and spreading around the world (110 countries and counting), I thought it would be fun to have her on the show to talk about her mother's role in this now-international favorite Christmas movie and to learn some back story to her mother's career and her commitment to writing back to the G.I's who wrote to her from the trenches and the gun turrets of World War II. The interview segues nicely into the next one, a rich conversation with actress Karolyn Grimes who played Zuzu, one of the four Bailey kids. Remember Zuzu's petals? This was a real treat for me who loves the movie so well, and I know it will be for you as well. I learned, among other things, how much Mrs. Grimes suffered as a teen when her mother died and then the next year her father was killed and she became a ward of the state—then “rescued” by an aunt and uncle in Missouri, which was an unhappy home situation. Karolyn also played Debbie, the daughter of David Niven and Loretta Young in another Christmas favorite, The Bishop's Wife. For those of us who can't gobble up enough trivia and true stories about It's a Wonderful Life, Mrs. Grimes is a treasure trove of first-hand memories and insights! Yes, I was star-struck, okay? Is that so wrong? Merry Christmas! If you would like to send us an of year donation please go to: paypal.me/patrickcoffin
Everyone has seen A Christmas Carol, The Bishop's Wife, and It's a Wonderful Life--but Mike wanted to talk about a lesser-known Christmas film that he thinks deserves more viewers: Roy Del Ruth's It Happened on Fifth Avenue (1947). Join Mike and Dan as they talk about what makes the film so weird, compelling, and satisfying--and how the film asks its viewers to think about the ways that you can only hurt the ones you love. So open that manhole, climb on down, put on the millionaire's dressing gown, light a cigar, and give this one a listen! We finally did it! We watched 20 Christmas movies! This time it's the classic classic claaaaaassic MIRACLE ON 34TH STREET _________________ MIRACLE ON 34TH STREET (1947) synopsis from Rotten Tomatoes: In this Christmas classic, an old man going by the name of Kris Kringle (Edmund Gwenn) fills in for an intoxicated Santa in Macy's annual Thanksgiving Day parade. Kringle proves to be such a hit that he is soon appearing regularly at the chain's main store in midtown Manhattan. When Kringle surprises customers and employees alike by claiming that he really is Santa Claus, it leads to a court case to determine his mental health and, more importantly, his authenticity. _________________ All the movies we watched: WHILE YOU WERE SLEEPING (1995) DR. Book Vs. Movie: The Bishop's Wife The 1928 novel by Robert Nathan Vs the 1947 Classic Cary Grant Film It's December at Book vs Movie and we are excited about covering holiday-themed films including this selection--The Bishop's Wife. The original novella was written by Robert Nathan in 1928 is the story of a preacher, Henry Boughman, who dreams of building a huge cathedral at the expense of his relationship with his wife Julia. An angel, Michael, appears to help Henry and his family learn that family & love is more important than status. In the meantime, Michael Falls in love with Julia and is distraught to hear they can never have a “mortal love.” Julia decides to try for another baby to fulfill her needs. The book is an exploration of faith with vivid conversations between the preacher and a Jewish businessman and Professor Wutheridge who both wish to find out the source of why he is so single-focused on religious expression. The movie, which features some child actors from the recently released It's a Wonderful Life, took some liberties from the book and focused more on the possible romance of Julia and “Dudley” (Cary Grant in a typically amazing performance.” The film was directed by Henry Koster and stars David Niven and Loretta Young. So, between the original story and the movie--which did we prefer? This episode is sponsored by Kensington's newest romance novel by acclaimed South African author Therese Beharrie And They Lived Happily Ever After about a romance novelist, Gaia Anders, who has an active dream life. Jacob is a workaholic with no time for relationships, but he crushes hard for Aiden and wonders how he can get her attention. Take Cary Grant, cast him as a literal, from heaven, with supernatural powers angel trying to seduce the wife of a stuck up, cold, neglectful bishop, and then throw away any lascivious or even interesting ideas that inspires in you when you consider it, and you'll have the shockingly lifeless The Bishop's Wife. It's definitely not the Best Picture that should have been for 1947, but find out what was in this episode!
On the third season premiere of the Red Church Door podcast, our host Colin Chapman sits down (on Zoom) with Polly Ingraham (https://www.pastorswifeblog.com), author, high school teacher, and wife to an Episcopal Bishop (the Rt. A. Robert Hirschfeld, Episcopal Church of New Hampshire). Polly shares stories of how she and Bp. Rob met, what it is like to be married to a member of the Clergy when one was not raised in that faith, and what the Church might be able to learn from her experience. After spending a year in the Memoir Incubator program at Grub Street in Boston, Polly recently completed a book manuscript about her life as a clergy spouse and the evolution of their unusual marriage and is actively seeking representation. (Note: In the episode, Colin mentions the manuscript as if it had a title and release date - this was an error.) At the top of the show, Colin welcomes his own clergy partner, Christie Everett Chapman, as she reflects on how growing up as a pastor’s kid made the idea of marrying a clergy person unappealing.

It's Christmas in May on The Podcast Goes To. This week, Bob and Matt talk about the overtly religious and slightly disturbing holiday classic "The Bishop's Wife." Cary Grant plays an angel who gets off on cucking bishops. What exactly is the job description of an angel? Are their any limits to the angel's powers? Is dating a human really what an angel should be doing with his time? We talk 1940's special effects, from self-refilling wine glasses to self-decorating Christmas trees. Plus, a little video game and spoiler-free Avenger talk. Matt dishes on his Weinstein Company experience and previews a special episode celebrating the show's first ten episodes.
Join Adolfo on this solo adventure as he discusses some of the cherished Holiday Hollywood classics such as:A CHRISTMAS CAROL (1938)HOLIDAY INN (1942)THE BISHOP'S WIFE (1947)SCROOGE (1951)WHITE CHRISTMAS (1954)A CHRISTMAS STORY (1983)and more!

Happy holidays! It's time for another Christmas movie pick to celebrate, and we're jumping back to 1947 to talk about Henry Koster's “The Bishop's Wife.” Join us — Pete Wright and Andy Nelson — as we dive into this perennial classic starring Cary Grant, Loretta Young and David Niven. We talk about how the film works for us and compare that with what we were expecting, considering neither of us had seen this film before. We chat about the brilliant Niven, the casual and awesome Grant, and the loving Young playing the titular character. We spend some time deliberating on the title itself, and express some confusion about why it's called what it's called and how that affected our opinions and expectations of this character. We chat about the release strategy of the movie and how they increased profits by changing its title. And we look at in context of it being a Christmas movie and where it stands for us. It's a delightful holiday film that has some great light comedy paired with a more serious tone, and we have a great time talking about it. Tune in!* * *Hey! You know what would be awesome? If you would drop us a positive rating on iTunes! If you like what we're doing here on TNR, it really is the best way to make sure that this show appears when others search for it, plus, it's just a nice thing to do.
