Debut novelist Giselle Vriesen read fantasy books as an escape when she was a teen on Salt Spring Island, but she never saw her heritage reflected. Young adult fantasy is a popular book genre, but it's often rooted in Greek, or other western mythologies. On this episode of This is Vancouver Island, she talks about building worlds based on mythology from her own Jamaican, Chinese, and European-Canadian backgrounds — and how she couldn't help but include some rainforests and oceans too. Her first book, called Why We Play with Fire, is out now.

Not Just Cute, the Podcast: Intentional Whole Child Development for Parents and Teachers of Young Children

This is the third episode in a nine-episode series!  (Find them all here.)  In this episode, we're digging into why we play for brain development and real learning.  There are many people who say they support play for young children, but question whether or not we need play in school, or who might argue that play is important, as long as we get the work of learning done first.  So today, we'll talk about why play and learning aren't as separate as people might think. Not Just Cute, the Podcast: Intentional Whole Child Development for Parents and Teachers of Young Children

I'm excited to be kicking off something special today.  For years, I've been speaking at workshops and conferences about the power of play in the early learning environment, which sparked the series of parent letters I've written, called Why We Play.  This month, I'll be sharing a special podcast series with the same name: Why We Play.  Every Tuesday and Thursday in February, you'll find a new episode sharing the science and stories behind why we play, evidence that play is not just cute, it's incredibly powerful. This Why We Play podcast series is long overdue – I'm so excited to jump into a topic I'm SO passionate about and to share some fascinating, compelling research that I absolutely love nerding out on.  I hope you'll join me for the whole month of February. Whether you're a champion for play or a playful learning skeptic, this series is just for you. Find Show Notes at https://notjustcute.com/podcast/episode62

On this week's episode of 64, I interviewed Coach Wilder about the chess scene in Detroit, and about scholastic chess in America. Coach Wilder describes his role as a "motivational speaker" for his students during tournaments, and discusses his goals for his own chess improvement. We talk about [Aviv](https://twitter.com/AvivOr) and [Ev](https://twitter.com/evyatron) behind their backs! HOHOHOH Actually we just regerutate some advice that they gave us. ### Player's perspective (3:00) Choose a character class/playbook/concept that can stand on its own - has enough power to influence the story/combat, can survive alone, has some ability with communications. Avoid min-maxing, go broad. Play to whatever strengths the system, and world, call for. Talk a lot with your GM - if they're not into doing matrix runs in a cyberpunk game, there's no point in aiming for a hacker. [The Sprawl](http://www.ardens.org/games/the-sprawl/) Player motivations - [Why We Play](https://dwarves.podiant.co/e/365abc29b5e3c2/) ### GM's perspective (9:10) Re-plan everything for one. Everything is personal, there's nothing else. Avoid balance, it's a harmful concept. Give lots of useful items, favours, blessings. Go wild. You can do the type of things they have in movies and books - throw him to jail, have him escape. Play a whole date with someone. Tailor the adventure to this specific character. Relationships are key. Have tons of major NPCs, in various social circles. Sessions will be slow-paced. If you want to search for something, you can't do it while the players talk amongst themselves. ### Taking the load off (27:05) Uri: Pathfinder session. This week I will be speaking with Sarbjit “Sab” Singh, Founder of Sports Doing Good, I’ve loved their mission to gather and promote the best stories in Sports – no statistics or highlight reels, just Sports Doing Good. Plan to tune in and look forward to remembering and getting back to Why We PLAY.https://www.spreaker.com/show/mtp-dave-briglioSports Doing Good, a property of The Kaur Group, is built on the idea of sports being fun, inspirational and being a tool for positive social change. The concept and practice of corporate social responsibility and social entrepreneurship are now rooted firmly in the mindset and actions of thousands of individuals, companies and organizations around the globe. Their website is part of a movement to both drive the growth of and highlight the good work already being done by those in and around sports.Their goal is to have Sports Doing Good be a portal housing original content and excerpts from and links to the increasing number of articles, websites, video, and other sources that showcase the good in sports and and its relation to social responsibility. They aim to celebrate those concepts, activities, events, and individuals by highlighting them for a wider audience. Much of the news today, whether sports related or not, is incredibly negative and increasingly polarized, biased, and quite annoying. At SDG, they are trying to refocus some of the discussion on the good related to the world of sports.About Sab: He was born in Brooklyn, NY and raised in Rockville Centre on Long Island, played soccer here and there (still does). He graduated with honors from Georgetown University with a BSBA in Finance and earned MBA and JD degrees from Emory University. Sab is a proud and active alum of all three institutions. He is an experienced business strategy and market research professional. He’s taught entrepreneurship and business planning in the sports management program at NYU’s Preston Robert Tisch Center for Hospitality, Tourism, and Sports Management. And at St. John’s University he taught “Philosophy, Principles, and Organization of Sport Management”.In this episode, you’ll hear…•The need to bring sports, social responsibility and development together•The use of sports to improve our lives and the lives of individuals and communities worldwide.•Some amazing stories of sports organizations that are “Doing Good”

WHY We Play – Part 2 People don't fit nicely into categories, and we're in the people business. So, what if we looked at things differently?  Once we know why people do things, we can anticipate what they enjoy doing and what they consider fun. Once we know that, we can add game elements, mechanics, and dynamics that they'll actually enjoy, that will cause them to want to play. Today's episode is Part 1 of an outtake from a recent webinar that Sententia hosted with Jonathan Peters, PhD entitled Why We Play. You'll hear Jonathan explain the 16 WHYS that we use at Sententia. For many people, the 16 WHYS feels, looks, sounds like something they've gone through before. But it's actually quite different. Jonathan tells us why it's different, and also introduces you to the 14 WHYS that relate directly to gamification and how and what each of us defines as FUN. After all, wouldn't it be better if people wanted to engage in your programs rather than being prodded and pushed? If you'd like a copy of the whitepaper that Jonathan references in the program, simply email me guru@sententiagames.com and ask for The 16 Whys Whitepaper. Today, enjoy Part 2 of this program. If you missed Part 1, look back in the archives and be sure to listen. I look forward to your comments and questions.   About Jonathan Peters, PhD: Jonathan Peters, Ph.D. Is an international speaker and writer.
