Ever wondered how an award-winning musician navigates an entire orchestra of analog synthesizers? Join us on this week's Lost in Sound as Paul sits down with Will Gregory, one half of Goldfrapp and head honcho of the Will Gregory Moog Ensemble. You'll hear about his journey from playing saxophone with Tears for Fears in the '80s to collaborating with industry giants like Peter Gabriel, The Cure, and Portishead in the '90s. Discover the inspiration behind the Moog Ensemble's latest album, ignited by Wendy Carlos's "Switched-On Bach." Gregory sheds light on the unique challenges and nostalgic appeal of using vintage synthesizers, the logistics of live performances, and the thematic choice of making an album about Archimedes, connecting mathematics with music in unexpected ways. The pandemic reshaped his creative process, resulting in compositions that blend literal and abstract interpretations, akin to a film score for an imaginary biopic about the ancient mathematician. Explore the ever-evolving landscape of music consumption with us, as we discuss the shift from detailed jazz albums to the instant gratification of digital platforms like TikTok. Gregory reflects on the impact of these changes on listening habits and the importance of live performances in sustaining the music industry. We also delve into the cultural and artistic shifts of the early '70s, highlighting the necessity of artistic growth and the continuous battle with creative uncertainty. This episode offers an intimate look at the artistic journey and evolution of an innovative musician who has consistently pushed musical boundaries. Will Gregory Moog Ensemble - a Digital Deluxe edition of their debut album, Heat Ray: The Archimedes Project, set for release on Mute on 27 September 2024. Follow Paul Hanford on InstagramLost and Sound is sponsored by Audio-TechnicaPaul's BBC World Service radio documentary “The man who smuggled punk rock across the Berlin Wall” is available now on BBC Sounds. Microphilosophy with Julian Baggini

I talked to Will Gregory and Graham Fitkin when they visited St Georges in Bristol in 2018 to perform with Will Gregory's Moog Ensemble, Will Gregory is best known as half of Goldfrapp and is also a composer and producer. Graham Fitkin a composer, pianist and conductor best known for his minimalist and postminimalist work. Our conversation contains gems for both synth geeks and those like me who don't know much except what we like. And if you're thinking what has this got to do with philosophy?, just take a listen and if you're still asking by the end, I'd suggest your conception of philosophy might be too narrow. I'm very excited about today's show because our guest deejay is Adrian Utley! Most likely you know Adrian from Portishead, the band that put trip hop on the map late last century. Or you many know Adrian more recently for the work he did with Will Gregory for the soundtrack to the motion picture Arcadia, which I featured on the first episode of SOUNDWAVE. Adrian is a man who cares deeply about his craft and his love of sound and music is expressed in any project he is involved with. I want to give special thanks to Charles Hazelwood for putting me in contact with Adrian. After Charles's mix for SOUNDWAVE went live I asked him who he knew personally who might be interested in participating in the show and he suggested Adrian and Hannah Peel (who will be our guest deejay on next week's show). It's little things like that that make this show feel special and more intimate. At least to me, anyway. Okay, time for me to wrap this up. With the death of Ahmaud Arbery breaking news a few weeks ago, there is a familiar resonance of outrage among black people in America. People are mad all over again, history continues to repeat itself. Will Gregory and Travis McMichael ever see their day in court for the death of Ahmaud?  The protests and uproar of blacks did lead to an arrest, but how far will that go?  And were we, black people, too quick to judgement of the father and son?Is our anger a little displaced?  With all that is being said and those things not being said, it is time for black people to educate themselves on all the facts and not just some of it.  Was it a citizens arrest gone wrong or a blatant attempt at another black life?  It stinks of past cases like Trayvon Martin, Eric Garner, Michael Brown, Sandra Bland; but not every case is the same. Now, the investigation is being done with more and more unfolding, some of which we may not like- what do we do about this?Hosea 4:6 For lack of knowledge, my people perish. It's understandable the sentiments felt or shared, but have we been a little overzealous about things?  Did we take the time to do some investigating ourselves before picketing? Historical events fueled by racism, police brutality towards blacks, etc., continues to lead emotions of all watching how this thing will turn out, but while we know that white people can be racists, can black people be racists too? And with another presidential election on the way, the pandemic COVID-19 halting all campaign efforts, here is another strategy to win our votes: the Ahmaud Arbery case.James 1:19 Let every person be quick to hear, slow to speak, slow to anger.Proverbs 18:2 A fool takes no pleasure in understanding, but only in expressing his opinion.Be mindful the things you stand to say or do in the midst of anger for you might have to retract them later; and outrage rarely ever leads to sound actions, it sometimes leads to stupid decisions.----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------Thank you for listening - Follow me, Sade Graham on Instagram & Twitter or look me up on Facebook.Artwork design & logo by Dana Givens.                                                             Website: https://www.danagivens.com/   Social: www.instagram.com/danagivens/ Original music produced by professional musical production company, SweatBeatz. Website: http://www.sweatbeatz.com/   Social: www.instagram.com/ricspice/ & www.instagram.com/diasekou/----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Set in 1958 in the writer's hometown of Nottingham, where many of those who had arrived on the Windrush had settled, Shebeen shines a light on a community under siege on the eve of the St Ann's race riots. Shebeen is directed by Matthew Xia and is currently on at the Theatre Royal, Stratford East. Christo and Jeanne-Claude are celebrated for their ambitious sculptural works that intervene in urban and natural landscapes around the world and temporarily alter both the physical form and visual appearances of sites. This summer the Serpentine Galleries presents a major exhibition of the artists' work, which draws upon their use of barrels to create artworks. Simultaneously, Christo presents The London Mastaba, his first outdoor, public work in the UK. The sculpture takes inspiration from mastabas - benches with two vertical sides, two slanted sides and a flat top - which originated with the first ancient civilisations of Mesopotamia. It will float on The Serpentine lake in Hyde Park from 18 June to 23 September. Measuring 20m in height by 30m and 40m, the sculpture consists of 7,506 horizontally stacked barrels, specifically fabricated and painted in shades of red, white, blue and mauve. BBC 2's Japan's Secret Shame tells the moving story of 29 year-old Japanese journalist Shiori Ito, who in May 2017 shocked Japan when she went public with allegations that she was raped by a well-known TV journalist. Following Shiori over a year, the film portrays the consequences Shiori faced by speaking out in Japanese society.

Music is integral to both the cinematic and gaming experience and there are a growing number of artists turning their hand to composing for film and games. Speaking at SXSW in Austin, Texas in March 2018, we brought together a fantastic panel to discuss the world of live score and the bridges being formed between the worlds of music, film and gaming, chaired by Joel Mills from the British Council’s Music team. Our conversation features Adrian Utley (Portishead) who shares his experiences, including as co-composer of the score for Arcadia (2017) with Goldfrapp’s Will Gregory. Stuart Brown from the British Film Institute brings the commissioner’s perspective as he talks us through pictures and stories from previous BFI projects. Creative producer and programmer Laura Ducceschi talks about live score gaming project Dear Esther. Read more: http://music.britishcouncil.org/projects/film-and-music/sxsw-film-music-and-gaming

October 16th, 1984. Lépanges-sur-Vologne, France. Christine Villemin was in her home doing housework while her 4 year old son, Gregory, played in their yard. At some point she went to check on him but he was nowhere to be found. An anonymous call to Gregory's uncle revealed the terrible truth. The caller claimed to have taken the young boy and thrown him into the river. Hours later, little Gregory was recovered from the river. An investigation into the Villemin family revealed that harassing calls and letters went on for years prior to the murder. The caller was nicknamed "The Crow" after a controversial French film from 1943 titled, 'Le Corbeau'. Why did things escalate from harassment to murder? For decades, police and prosecutors worked to solve this crime. In 2017 a major announcement changed the direction of the case. Will the mystery finally be solved? Will Gregory's killers finally be brought to justice?
