This month's deep dive Listen Closely album is:Portishead - Dummy (1994)The debut album from the Bristol trio of Geoff Barrow, Beth Gibbons, and Adrian Utley was released during the summer of Blur's Parklife and Oasis's Definitely Maybe. Dummy was a darker, stranger record that would become a trip-hop classic that paired hip-hop, jazz, and electronic textures with Beth Gibbons spine-tingling voice and twangy tremolo guitars that belong in spy movies. The winner of the 1995 Mercury Music Prize, Dummy features the singles ‘Sour Times', ‘Glory Box', and ‘Numb', and is notable for it soulful turntable-sampling, melancholic film noir atmosphere. A modern classic indeed. We delve deep into how the band met, what trip-hop and the Bristol sound was, how the band got their name, how Dummy became hugely popular and a bit of a dinner-party LP ripe for sexy background music in film and more. The hosts of the Nialler9 Podcast (Niall Byrne and Andrea Cleary) present the Listen Closely series of listening parties on the Big Romance's warm Toby Hatchett soundsystem, featuring a focus modern classic album and a chat around it on the last Wednesday of the month. The Portishead - Dummy Listening Party happens Wednesday March 27th at The Big Romance. Thanks to Georgia Hallion for editing the podcast.* Support Nialler9 on Patreon, get event discounts, playlists, ad-free episodes and join our Discord communityListen on Apple | Android | ACAST | Patreon | Pocketcasts | CastBox | Stitcher | Spotify | RSS FeedShow notesSongs played on the Nialler9 Podcast Spotify PlaylistKEXP 25 year anniversary interview in 2019Dummy SamplesPitchfork's review by By Philip Sherburne Hosted on Acast. Adrian Utley is one of the most versatile and creative musicians the UK has produced. His work with artists such as Jeff Beck, Patti Smith and Glenn Branca is testament to this.  Shooting to prominence in the mid 1990s with Portishead, Adrian's beautifully judged, nuanced playing - with its unique jazz and soul sensibilities - set the band apart from their contemporaries in what would become known as the trip-hop scene.  Dummy, Portishead's debut album, would go multi-platinum. The band continues to have a lasting influence in terms of production values, musicianship and sheer style.   Adrian accepted an invitation to join me for this episode of Life on the Fretboard after an online conversation about our shared love of the work of Fred Frith - a pioneer in the improvised and exploratory music scene.  Shortly after, I was invited to film an original 1958 Gibson Flying V. Those of you familiar with my work will understand my trepidation to go it alone with a guitar that was so far out of my comfort zone, so I asked Adrian if he'd like to join me in exploring one of the rarest and pointiest electric guitars known to humanity. I was a little taken aback at the speed with which he accepted. I made a video of us exploring that Flying V: https://youtu.be/VM95mN7eDC0 Once we had finished with the pointy beast, we sat down to record this conversation. Adrian shares his memories of working with Jeff Beck and Glenn Branca and we talk about Adrian's love of all guitars, from vintage L-5s to dumpster-find acoustics. We also chat about learning to love limitations, the Fender Jazzmaster, the best footwear for wah-wah pedal usage, and that solo from the song "Glory Box."  Here's a reminder if you need one https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MnMTK8EdsOc I hope you enjoy this conversation as much as I did. We had the pleasure of interviewing Alison Sudol over Zoom video! London-based, American singer-songwriter and actress Alison Sudol releases her autobiographical new album Still Come The Night via Kartel Music Group. Formerly known under the moniker A Fine Frenzy, this intimate album is an impassioned effort that signals the welcome return of a unique artist, a powerful voice armed with candid lyrics and authentic musicianship. Written and co-produced by Alison with London-based multi-instrumentalist, producer and composer Chris Hyson - half of adventurous collective Snowpoet - Still Come The Night owns its intimate sound to the backdrop at Giant Wafer studios, situated in an area of outstanding natural beauty, nestled between sheep fields in the Welsh countryside. Chris recruited Welsh twin brothers Lloyd and Alex Haines on drums and guitar and engineer Alex Killpatrick to join them at Wafer. There they worked together from morning until midnight, writing song after song, creating a hushed intimacy and sense of space among, even, the many layers of songs with their subtle harmonies and intricate instrumentation. While making the core of the album (those four songs were written by Alison while isolating at her friend's farm with her partner), she just found out she was pregnant when the world suddenly stopped, filming on Fantastic Beasts - the movie franchise in which Alison stars as Queenie Goldstein - had been indefinitely suspended, the tour with Goldfrapp postponed, and for some reason she couldn't taste or smell anything. The mood in London was strange, tense. No one knew how long this thing would last, and the risk for pregnant women. There, without any wifi, set with the changing seasons and the quiet solitude of their borrowed cottage as the backdrop, the first songs of her intimate and introspective yet powerful, poetic record came quickly and quietly. London went into lockdown. Days later, they lost the baby. When Alison began writing Still Come the Night, she knew that she wanted to make an album to process the different stages of grief that she and her partner experienced with the loss of their first baby in pregnancy. This new album spans the emotions of Alison's journey, from the exhilaration of early love into the tightrope walk of excitement and uncertainty of pregnancy and ultimately through the complex and mysterious landscape of grief. Now based in London, Alison Sudol is an American singer-songwriter, musician, actress and video director. Having released three critically acclaimed albums under the name A Fine Frenzy during which she toured with Rufus Wainwright and opened for The Stooges at SXSW. Making her comeback to music as Alison Sudol in 2018 she released two EPs, Moon and its follow-up, Moonlite both co-produced with Yard Act and Gruff Rhys' producer Ali Chant, and featuring Portishead's Clive Deamer and Adrian Utley and John Parish. Her acting credits include the Fantastic Beasts And Where To Find Them franchise and the critically acclaimed TV series Transparent and Dig. We want to hear from you! Today's guest deejay is Jonathan Ammons, a journalist, radio producer, and musician living in Asheville, North Carolina. You can find his music on Bandcamp and listen to his radio show from WPVM and Pacifica Radio Network at the Dirty Spoon. Jonathan is yet another amazing person I was introduced to through my old friend, Steve Howard (listen to Steven's SOUNDWAVE mix here). Meeting Jonathan is one of the unexpected pleasures in the evolution of SOUNDWAVE. I launched SOUNDWAVE to help cope with the stress of the pandemic. In the first few months of COVID-19 it seemed that stepping outside your house might kill you. If that wasn't terrifying enough, my family was scattered about the country so for a long time it was just me and my dog. That took a toll on me and my usual distractions, music, reading and television, could not hold my interest at all. In fact, they annoyed me or angered me. The only thing that provided any comfort was ambient, classical, experimental and instrumental music. I reasoned that if that music was giving me solace it might help others as well so I launched SOUNDWAVE. Very soon afterwards I decided to invite the talented people I know who might enjoy or, more importantly, need to share a mix of their own. And that very quickly led to asking my friends who they knew personally who might want to participate in the show. That decision introduced me to such wonderful people as Adrian Utley, Hannah Peel, Charles Hazlewood and Jonathan. I don't really know Jonathan, though. We've just had a few email exchanges arranging today's show but through his mix I feel I know him more intimately than I might know him through a dozen conversations. That's all projection, of course, but that is the power of music. It bypasses the rational and hits on emotional truths, which is why I launched SOUNDWAVE in the first place. Charles put me in contact with Portishead's Adrian Utley and Hannah Peel. Adrian's mix was lovely and Hannah's mix is no less so. On today's show Hannah will take you to some very surprising places and she begins her mix with a track from Joni Mitchel. So unexpected! You're in her capable hands so enjoy the journey. I know you're going to love today's show. As I said, I was unfamiliar with Hannah but I've been getting up to speed. And you should, too, because Hannah's music is also unexpected. Her songs can be delicate and achingly familiar. She''ll paint impressionistic music with swathes of sound but will also delight you with covers of pop songs from the ‘80s performed on music boxes. I catch myself singing Soft Cell's “Tainted Love” constantly thanks to Hannah. Join us again next week when our guest deejay will be Jonathan Ammons. I'm very excited about today's show because our guest deejay is Adrian Utley! Most likely you know Adrian from Portishead, the band that put trip hop on the map late last century. Or you many know Adrian more recently for the work he did with Will Gregory for the soundtrack to the motion picture Arcadia, which I featured on the first episode of SOUNDWAVE. Adrian is a man who cares deeply about his craft and his love of sound and music is expressed in any project he is involved with. I want to give special thanks to Charles Hazelwood for putting me in contact with Adrian. After Charles's mix for SOUNDWAVE went live I asked him who he knew personally who might be interested in participating in the show and he suggested Adrian and Hannah Peel (who will be our guest deejay on next week's show). It's little things like that that make this show feel special and more intimate. At least to me, anyway. Okay, time for me to wrap this up. My family and I are going to take a little but much needed vacation and get away from the wildfires and earthquakes that have wracked California. I hope you are safe and well. See you next week. Set in 1958 in the writer's hometown of Nottingham, where many of those who had arrived on the Windrush had settled, Shebeen shines a light on a community under siege on the eve of the St Ann's race riots. Shebeen is directed by Matthew Xia and is currently on at the Theatre Royal, Stratford East. Christo and Jeanne-Claude are celebrated for their ambitious sculptural works that intervene in urban and natural landscapes around the world and temporarily alter both the physical form and visual appearances of sites. This summer the Serpentine Galleries presents a major exhibition of the artists' work, which draws upon their use of barrels to create artworks. Simultaneously, Christo presents The London Mastaba, his first outdoor, public work in the UK. The sculpture takes inspiration from mastabas - benches with two vertical sides, two slanted sides and a flat top - which originated with the first ancient civilisations of Mesopotamia. It will float on The Serpentine lake in Hyde Park from 18 June to 23 September. Measuring 20m in height by 30m and 40m, the sculpture consists of 7,506 horizontally stacked barrels, specifically fabricated and painted in shades of red, white, blue and mauve. BBC 2's Japan's Secret Shame tells the moving story of 29 year-old Japanese journalist Shiori Ito, who in May 2017 shocked Japan when she went public with allegations that she was raped by a well-known TV journalist. Following Shiori over a year, the film portrays the consequences Shiori faced by speaking out in Japanese society.

Miles Davis - trumpeter, composer, bandleader - is championed by Adrian Utley of Portishead. "He's always been really important in my life, right from early on when my dad used to play him. It was part of the atmosphere of our house." From the early years with Charlie Parker and on via Kind of Blue to playing in front of 600,000 hippies on the Isle of Wight, Miles Davis was a musician who never stood still. "Always listen for what you can leave out," he used to say, and Portishead's seminal nineties album Dummy seems to have taken advice from the man. According to Adrian Utley, "The darkness and the sense of space is the thing that I have assimilated from Miles ... he's in my DNA." With Richard Williams, author of The Blue Moment: Miles Davis's Kind of Blue and the Remaking of Modern Music,. Presented by a sceptical Matthew Parris, and produced by an enthusiastic Miles Warde.
