Millions of snooker fans in China witnessed history as 28-year-old Zhao Xintong became the first Chinese player, as well as the first Asian, to win the World Snooker Championship final. Zhao, hailed as "a new superstar", triumphed over Welsh player Mark Williams, a three-time champion, to win the trophy in the final in Sheffield, United Kingdom, with an 18-12 victory on Monday. Zhao is the youngest world champion since Shaun Murphy, who won in 2005 at the age of 22. Overwhelmed by his achievement, Zhao, draped in a Chinese flag, said: "I can't believe what I've done. It's like a dream. I was so nervous tonight—Mark is still a top player and put me under so much pressure. He's the best. This is a very special moment for me, for Chinese snooker, for everyone." The victory ignited an outpouring of jubilation across social media, with fans celebrating the long-awaited breakthrough, including one netizen who said, "Chinese snooker has found its worthy successor." Fans also said Zhao's historic achievement will inspire future generations of young Chinese players. Zhao's success fulfilled a dream that had eluded his compatriot trailblazer Ding Junhui, who narrowly missed winning the title in 2016. That year, Ding became the first Asian player to reach the World Championship final, but he fell short against Mark Selby from the UK. The sport's popularity in China has grown exponentially over the past two decades, helped by the success of Ding, who served as an inspiration for Zhao. Ding congratulated Zhao on Sina Weibo with a poignant post:"It brings me such joy to see that the threshold I once struggled to break through has now become a runway for others—and today, someone finally sprinted all the way to the finish line," Ding said. This glorious moment is the ultimate reward for Chinese snooker fans who've steadfastly supported us and waited for this day," he added. "Zhao's victory isn't just his own—it's the realization of a shared dream that generations of Chinese players have worked toward. I'm thrilled for him, and proud to witness the rise of China's power on this stage."“这一荣耀时刻,是对一直以来支持我们、期盼这一天的中国斯诺克球迷的终极褒奖。” Zhao dominated Sunday's first two sessions at 11-6 and improved his advantage to 17-8 after the third session on Monday. 8。With Zhao just one frame away from making history, the 50-year-old Williams launched a strong comeback, taking four frames in a row at the start of the final session. But the three-time world champion couldn't hold off Zhao any further, as the Chinese player wrapped up the contest by winning the 30th frame with a break of 87. Williams offered high praise for Zhao. I'm glad I'll be too old when he's dominating the game," Williams said. "I've got nothing but admiration for what he's done, coming through the qualifiers. ... There's a new superstar of the game."“我很高兴当他统治比赛时,我已经老了,”威廉姆斯说。“我对他从资格赛中脱颖而出的表现只有钦佩……他是一位新的超级巨星。”Zhao will start next season at No 11 in the world rankings. He has joined nine other Chinese players in the world's top 32, with England the only nation with more players ranked in the top echelon. triumph/ˈtraɪʌmf/v.获胜;战胜outpouring/ˈaʊtpɔːrɪŋ/n.(情感、反应等的)迸发,倾泻compatriot/kəmˈpætriət/n.同胞trailblazer/ˈtreɪlˌbleɪzər/n.

Former French interior minister Darmanin's 'long overdue' apology to Liverpool fans

PRESS REVIEW – Tuesday, May 6: The Peruvian press are searching for answers after 13 miners were found murdered in an underground shaft. Also: French Justice Minister Gérald Darmanin finally apologises for the police's violent treatment of Liverpool football fans during the 2023 Champions League final in Paris. Snooker has a new world champion: controversial Chinese player Zhao Xintong. Plus, we look at the best and worst of billionaires' fashion at the Met Gala. There's shock in Peru after the bodies of 13 miners were found in an underground shaft. The grisly murders came to light on Sunday with the discovery of the bodies in a shaft operated by Peru's largest gold mining company in the Pataz region. The New York Times explains that the region has seen growing conflict over access to ore recently as gold prices soar amid illegal mining and organised crime. The Peruvian press are leading with the story. El Comercio, a Peruvian daily, calls the attacks bloody and cruel. Peruvian President Dina Boluarte held a press conference on Monday, announcing the suspension of mining for 30 days. El Comercio's editor reacts to her speech, saying that rather than reassuring the public, her message did the opposite. It confirmed the disorientation in the government about how to address the very serious situation of violence and crime in Peru. Another Peruvian daily La República, meanwhile, headlines with the face of the man believed responsible. Miguel Rodriguez Diaz, aka "El Cuchillo", was identified by the president as one of those responsible. The paper reports that he fled to Colombia shortly after her press conference. He had been inexplicably released by the public ministry. Rodriguez Diaz is known for his ties to criminal organisations in the Pataz region, where 39 deaths linked to illegal mining have occurred since 2023. Rodriguez Diaz is allegedly responsible for the murder of four people at another mine last year. Here in France, Gérald Darmanin has issued an apology to Liverpool football fans. As FRANCE 24 reports, Darmanin is French justice minister but back in 2022, he was interior minister amid the French government's chaotic handling of the Champions League final in Paris between Liverpool and Real Madrid. On that day, police fired tear gas and pepper spray at thousands of supporters, injuring many, as authorities blamed rowdy fans. In his interview, Darmanin admitted that France was not ready to host the final, which was moved from Russia in the midst of the war in Ukraine. The editor of Sud Ouest, a large regional paper in France, sees some shrewd ulterior motives in Darmanin's apology. The editor wonders if the apology is an attempt to wipe the slate clean ahead of presidential elections in 2027, in which he intends to run. "When one has one's eyes on the Elysée Palace, you need a political do-over," it says.In the Liverpool press, it's a different story: Liverpool Echo offers a measured response, noting that Darmanin offered his first full and frank apology for the way Liverpool fans were treated. Empire of the Kop, a news service run by a group of Liverpool fans who are professional journalists, are far more sceptical. They call it a "long overdue" apology, but remind us that Liverpool fans' patience actually prevented a frightening situation from getting worse. Furthermore, in his apology Darmanin said he expected a war of hooligans and for this publication, that's an unfair generalisation of fans from both Real Madrid and Liverpool. In other news, snooker has a new world champion! The Global Times reports that 28-year-old Zhao Xintong from China has won the World Snooker Championship after he defeated the three-time world champion, Welshman Mark Williams, in a thrilling final on Monday. His victory is a complicated one. Zhao returned recently to the sport after a 20-month ban over match-fixing that involved 10 Chinese players in 2023. He did not match-fix himself, but was party to another player who did. This is why his victory is somewhat muted in snooker circles. However, for The Independent, there is no doubt he will reach stratospheric levels of popularity in China, where snooker, a quaint British invention, is immensely popular. However you feel about him, Zhao is changing the face of snooker. The Telegraph calls him the Roger Federer of the snooker world. Finally, the press are focusing on one of the biggest events on the fashion calendar. The Met Gala celebrated Black dandyism in New York on Monday. Business Insider offers us a best and worst dressed list of billionaires at the event. On the best dressed list: Wendy Murdoch and her daughter Grace. The former wife of Rupert Murdoch and her daughter were charming in elegant white and gold outfits. On the worst dressed list: Norwegian tech billionaire Gustav Witzoe, in a white blazer cape hybrid with a briefcase of rose petals. Star Wars legend George Lucas also disappointed with his boring navy suit, while Kim Kardashian put together an unimaginative ensemble. Finally, Australian billionaire Anthony Pratt is not doing Australia's reputation for low fashion any favours, as people are disappointed with his lime-green eyesore! It turns out that money does not always buy good taste! You can catch our press review every morning on France 24 at 7:20am and 9:20am (Paris time), from Monday to Friday.

This is an extended version of a programme first broadcast on Sunday 28 May 2023.Ronnie O'Sullivan OBE is currently ranked the number one snooker player in the world, and is widely regarded as one of the finest players in the history of the sport. He has won the Masters a record seven times and he jointly holds the record for winning the World Snooker Championship seven times. Since 1997 he has held the world record for the fastest 147 break, leading to his nickname 'the Rocket'. Ronnie grew up in Essex and his father gave him his first snooker cue when he was seven. He took to the game immediately: he was playing on a full size snooker table when he was just eight, and two years later he was beating adult players. By the age of 12, he was winning cash prizes in local tournaments, and was soon earning more than his teachers. Ronnie turned professional when he was 16, and quickly established himself as a star player and a fans' favourite - but he has also made headlines away from the snooker table, with accounts of his depression and struggles with alcohol and drugs. For many years he has kept his physical and mental health in check through his passion for running. He received an OBE in 2016 for services to snooker. The qualifying rounds took place from 3 to 12 April 2023 at the English Institute of Sport in Sheffield. The 15th and final ranking tournament of the 2022–23 snooker season, it was organised by the World Snooker Tour and sponsored for the first time by car retailer Cazoo. It was broadcast in the United Kingdom by the BBC, in Europe by Eurosport, and elsewhere in the world by Matchroom Sport and other broadcasters. The total prize fund was £2,395,000, of which the winner received £500,000.Ronnie O'Sullivan was the defending champion, having defeated Judd Trump 18–13 in the 2022 final. He made a record 31st Crucible appearance, surpassing the 30 appearances by Steve Davis, and reached a record-extending 21st quarter-final—also becoming the first player to compete in 100 matches at the Crucible—but lost 10–13 to Belgian player Luca Brecel. Crucible debutants at the event were Fan Zhengyi, Jak Jones, Pang Junxu, Si Jiahui, and Wu Yize. Si, aged 20, became the first debutant to reach the semi-finals since Andy Hicks at the 1995 event and the youngest player to do so since O'Sullivan at the 1996 event. Brecel came from 5–14 behind in the semi-finals to defeat Si 17–15, the first time a player had won a match at the Crucible after trailing by nine frames. Brecel went on to defeat Mark Selby 18–15 in the final, winning his first world title, first Triple Crown title, and fourth ranking title. He became the sport's first world champion from mainland Europe. The event's main stage produced 90 century breaks. For the second time, after the 2008 event, two maximum breaks occurred at the main stage of the tournament: Kyren Wilson made a maximum in his first-round match against Ryan Day, and Selby became the first player to make a maximum in a World Championship final. O'Sullivan made both his 1,200th century in professional competition and his 200th Crucible century at the event. The qualifying rounds produced another 135 centuries, including a 115 break by Ng On-yee, the highest by a woman in the tournament's history. This recording reflects the Wikipedia text as of 00:51 UTC on Thursday, 26 September 2024.For the full current version of the article, see 2023 World Snooker Championship on Wikipedia. This podcast uses content from Wikipedia under the Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike License.Visit our archives at wikioftheday.com and subscribe to stay updated on new episodes.Follow us on Mastodon at @wikioftheday@masto.ai.Also check out Curmudgeon's Corner, a current events podcast.Until next time, I'm standard Aditi.

featured Wiki of the Day

fWotD Episode 2660: Snooker Welcome to Featured Wiki of the Day, your daily dose of knowledge from Wikipedia’s finest articles. The featured article for Friday, 16 August 2024 is Snooker.Snooker (pronounced UK: SNOO-kər, US: SNUUK-ər) is a cue sport played on a rectangular billiards table covered with a green cloth called baize, with six pockets: one at each corner and one in the middle of each long side. First played by British Army officers stationed in India in the second half of the 19th century, the game is played with twenty-two balls, comprising a white cue ball, fifteen red balls and six other balls—a yellow, green, brown, blue, pink and black—collectively called 'the colours'. Using a snooker cue, the individual players or teams take turns to strike the cue ball to pot other balls in a predefined sequence, accumulating points for each successful pot and for each foul committed by the opposing player or team. An individual frame of snooker is won by the player who has scored the most points, and a snooker match ends when a player reaches a predetermined number of frames. In 1875, army officer Neville Chamberlain, stationed in India, devised a set of rules that combined black pool and pyramids. The word snooker was a well-established derogatory term used to describe inexperienced or first-year military personnel. In the early 20th century, snooker was predominantly played in the United Kingdom, where it was considered a "gentleman's sport" until the early 1960s before growing in popularity as a national pastime and eventually spreading overseas. The standard rules of the game were first established in 1919 when the Billiards Association and Control Club was formed. As a professional sport, snooker is now governed by the World Professional Billiards and Snooker Association. The World Snooker Championship first took place in 1927, and Joe Davis—a key figure and pioneer in the early growth of the sport—won fifteen successive world championships between 1927 and 1946. The "modern era" of snooker began in 1969 after the broadcaster BBC commissioned the television series Pot Black, later airing daily coverage of the World Championship which was first televised in 1978. The most prominent players of the modern era are Ray Reardon (1970s), Steve Davis (1980s) and Stephen Hendry (1990s), each winning at least six world titles. Since 2000, Ronnie O'Sullivan has won the World Championship seven times, most recently in 2022. Top professional players compete in regular tournaments around the world, earning millions of pounds on the World Snooker Tour—a circuit of international events featuring competitors of many different nationalities. The World Championship, the UK Championship and the Masters together make up the Triple Crown Series and are considered by many players to be the most highly valued titles. The main professional tour is open to both male and female players, and there is a separate women's tour organised by World Women's Snooker. Competitive snooker is also available to non-professional players, including seniors and people with disabilities. The popularity of snooker has led to the creation of many variations based on the standard game but with different rules or equipment, including six-red snooker, the short-lived "snooker plus" and the more recent Snooker Shoot Out version. This recording reflects the Wikipedia text as of 00:02 UTC on Friday, 16 August 2024.For the full current version of the article, see Snooker on Wikipedia. This podcast uses content from Wikipedia under the Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike License.Visit our archives at wikioftheday.com and subscribe to stay updated on new episodes.Follow us on Mastodon at @wikioftheday@masto.ai.Also check out Curmudgeon's Corner, a current events podcast.Until next time, I'm neural Matthew.

He is generally recognised as the sport's first world champion from outside the United Kingdom and he remains the only world champion from the Americas.  He was runner-up in two other world championships, losing 21–25 to John Spencer in the 1977 final and 6–18 to Steve Davis in the 1983 final. At the 1983 tournament, Thorburn became the first player to make a maximum break of 147 in a World Championship match, achieving the feat in his second-round encounter with Terry Griffiths.Ranked World Number one during the 1981 - 1982 season, Thorburn was the first non-British player to top the snooker world rankings. He won the Invitational Masters in 1983, 1985, and 1986, making him the first player to win the tournament three times and the first to retain the title. Chris retired from the main professional tour in 1996. Inducted into Canada's Sporting Hall of Fame in 2001 and the Snooker Hall of Fame in 2014, he competed later in his career in Snooker Legends events and on the World Series tour, winning the 2018 Seniors Masters at the Crucible Theatre at age 70. He retired from competitive snooker after the 2022 seniors.#HeartTransplant#EbsteinsAnomaly#RareCondition#HealthJourney#LifeChangingDiagnosis#MentalHealth#Vulnerability#SelfCompassion#PostTraumaticGrowth#MedicalMiracle#BBCSports#Inspiration#Cardiology#Surgery#Podcast#Healthcare#HeartHealth#MedicalBreakthrough#EmotionalJourney#SupportSystem#HealthcareHeroes#PatientStories#CardiologyCare#MedicalJourney#LifeLessons#MentalWellness#HealthAwareness#InspirationalTalk#LivingWithIllness#RareDiseaseAwareness#SharingIsCaring#MedicalSupport#BBCReporter#HeartDisease#PodcastInterview#HealthTalk#Empowerment#Wellbeing#HealthPodcast#ChronicIllness#The grinder#Snooker#BilliardsCheck out our new website at www.whostomanddick.Check out our new website at www.whostomanddick.comCheck out our new website at www.whostomanddick.com

fWotD Episode 2543: 1984 World Snooker Championship Welcome to featured Wiki of the Day where we read the summary of the featured Wikipedia article every day.The featured article for Sunday, 21 April 2024 is 1984 World Snooker Championship. The 1984 World Snooker Championship (also referred to as the 1984 Embassy World Snooker Championship for the purpose of sponsorship) was a ranking professional snooker tournament that took place between 21 April and 7 May 1984 at the Crucible Theatre in Sheffield, England. The event was organised by the World Professional Billiards and Snooker Association, and was the eighth consecutive World Snooker Championship to be held at the Crucible since the 1977 event. The event featured 94 participants, of which 78 players competed in a qualifying event held at the Redwood Lodge in Bristol from 1 to 13 April. Of these, 16 players qualified for the main stage in Sheffield, where they met 16 invited seeds. The total prize fund for the event was £200,000, the highest total pool for any snooker tournament at that time; the winner received £44,000.The defending champion was English player Steve Davis, who had won the title twice previously. He met fellow-countryman Jimmy White in the final, which was played as a best-of-35-frames match. Davis took a significant lead of 12–4 after the first two sessions; although White battled back into the match, Davis eventually won 18–16, becoming the first player to retain the title at the Crucible. Rex Williams secured the championship's highest break, scoring a 138 in the 12th frame of his first-round loss to White. Eight century breaks were made during the competition, the fewest since the 1978 event. The tournament was sponsored by cigarette manufacturer Embassy, and broadcast by BBC.This recording reflects the Wikipedia text as of 00:53 UTC on Sunday, 21 April 2024.For the full current version of the article, see 1984 World Snooker Championship on Wikipedia. This podcast uses content from Wikipedia under the Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike License.Visit our archives at wikioftheday.com and subscribe to stay updated on new episodes.Follow us on Mastodon at @wikioftheday@masto.ai.Also check out Curmudgeon's Corner, a current events podcast.Until next time, I'm Ivy Standard.

fWotD Episode 2480: John Spencer (snooker player) Welcome to featured Wiki of the Day where we read the summary of the featured Wikipedia article every day.The featured article for Sunday, 18 February 2024 is John Spencer (snooker player).John Spencer (18 September 1935 – 11 July 2006) was an English professional snooker player. One of the most dominant players of the 1970s, he won the World Snooker Championship three times, in 1969, 1971 and 1977. He worked as a snooker commentator for the BBC from 1978 to 1998, and served for 25 years on the board of the sport's governing body, the World Professional Billiards and Snooker Association (WPBSA), including a stint as chairman from 1990 until his retirement from the board in 1996.Born in Radcliffe, Lancashire, Spencer started playing snooker on a full-sized table at age 14 and compiled his first century break aged 15. He was conscripted for National Service at age 18, and lost interest in playing snooker for over ten years before taking it up again in 1964. He reached the final of the English Amateur Championship for three years in a row, claiming the title at his third attempt in 1966. He turned professional in 1967—the same year as his amateur rivals Gary Owen and Ray Reardon—and won the world title as a debutant at the 1969 World Snooker Championship, which was staged as a knockout tournament for the first time since 1957, following a series of challenge matches from 1964 to 1968. Spencer defeated Owen 37–24 in the final to become the first World Champion of snooker's modern era. His title defence in 1970 ended with a 33–37 loss in the semi-finals to Reardon, the eventual winner. He secured his second world title at the 1971 World Championship in Sydney, Australia, defeating Warren Simpson 37–29 in the final to become the first player to win the world title at a knockout event staged overseas. He reached the final again in 1972 but lost 31–37 to Alex Higgins. He won his third world title in 1977, beating Cliff Thorburn 25–21 in the final to become the first player to win the World Championship at Sheffield's Crucible Theatre, where the tournament has been staged annually ever since. Spencer's other notable victories include the inaugural Masters in 1975, where he defeated Reardon on a re-spotted black in the deciding frame of the final, the inaugural Irish Masters in 1978, and three editions of the BBC's Pot Black series. In 1979, he became the first player to compile a maximum break at a professional tournament, although it was not recorded as an official maximum because the pockets on the table had not been measured against the required specifications. One of the first major professional players to use a two-piece cue, Spencer was noted for his unusual cue action and immense cue power. His later career was severely affected by the ocular version of myasthenia gravis, which was first diagnosed in 1985 and had symptoms including double vision. He made his last Crucible appearance at the 1986 World Championship, losing 7–10 to Higgins in the first round. His last notable achievement in professional play was reaching the quarter-finals of the 1987 British Open at age 51, where he lost 3–5 to Jimmy White. He retired from professional competition in 1992 because of ill health, but continued to perform in exhibition matches and served as chairman of the WPBSA for another four years. Diagnosed with stomach cancer in 2003, he died in a hospice near Bolton on 11 July 2006, aged 70. The trophy for the World Seniors Masters tournament was named in his memory in 2018.This recording reflects the Wikipedia text as of 00:03 UTC on Sunday, 18 February 2024.For the full current version of the article, see John Spencer (snooker player) on Wikipedia. This podcast uses content from Wikipedia under the Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike License.Visit our archives at wikioftheday.com and subscribe to stay updated on new episodes.Follow us on Mastodon at @wikioftheday@masto.ai.Also check out Curmudgeon's Corner, a current events podcast.Until next time, I'm Arthur Neural.

Ronnie O'Sullivan OBE is currently ranked the number one snooker player in the world, and is widely regarded as one of the finest players in the history of the sport. Barry Hearn is a promoter who has been at the forefront of some of the biggest snooker, boxing and darts events in the last 40 years. He played a central role in turning snooker into a television phenomenon, and as a boxing promoter he represented Chris Eubank and Nigel Benn. He later turned darts players, including Phil 'The Power' Taylor, into household names. Barry was born in Dagenham in East London in 1948 and grew up in a council house. At school, he enjoyed playing cricket and football, but freely admits he wasn't good enough to become a professional player. Instead, he became an accountant and when one of the companies he worked for asked him to find some investment properties, he bought a chain of snooker halls. Barry took advantage of the snooker boom of the 1970s - which started after the BBC began televising competitions - and signed a young Steve Davis. Steve went on to win the World Snooker Championship in 1981 and Barry formed his company Matchroom the following year. He consolidated his success by moving into boxing and then introduced darts to a mainstream audience. In 2021 Barry was presented with a Lifetime Achievement Award at the Sport Industry Awards, and also handed over the chairmanship of Matchroom to his son Eddie. His daughter Katie also works for the company. Barry is reluctant to retire just yet, and remains company president, where his new role has given him some more free time to enjoy one of his favourite activities – fishing.
