But the guys wanted to talk Marvel Cinematic Universe and for that they needed some help. While the movies can be divisive there's no doubting the impact the MCU has had on the movie landscape the last ten plus years and the success of how some of our favourite comic book characters and stories have been realised on film. Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse is Sony Picture Animation's biggest financial success to date. Spider-Verse 2 has almost doubled the global box office of the initial Oscar-winning film.    Movie pundits say 2018's Into the Spider-Verse run on Netflix helped this unique take on the Spider-Man story, grow a large cult following leading to this current film's winning box office. Vulture.com interviewed 4 of the animators who worked on this sequel and said it was a demanding production—working upwards of 11-hour days, up to 100 artists quitting throughout, and having to start from scratch five times due to pandemic-related starts/stops and editorial issues with Phil Lord. My thoughts; it was my favorite theatrical release of June 2023, over several other notable franchises, including Transformers, The Flash, and Indiana Jones.   It made me yearn for more big-budget, superhero, animated films. Visually I noticed it more in this movie than in the first; the mixing of the art styles is incredible-a comic book come to life.    Examples include the scene in the third act when Gwen talks to her father; the background turns into these pastel-like colors. Spider-Punk is introduced, and his appearance is in a style of a collage alphabet often associated with the punk scene. Shading on Miles's face using Ben-Day dots to convey a dramatic scene.    The Spot monologuing and stick figure artwork present in his design.  Once upon a time, I had aspirations of wanting to illustrate comics. I bought 'How to Draw Comics The Marvel Way' by Stan Lee and John Buscema.   I spent hours drawing what I was learning from that book. This film is a love letter to comic book art, which took me back to those days. Other notes-anytime you throw in moms and dads relating to their children and kids wanting their parent's support, I get emotional, which happened several times.    I loved the integration of the past live-action Spider films where you see clips of Andrew Garfield and Tobey Mcguire's turns as Peter Parker, which was unexpected and made these Spider-Verse stories part of the overall Sony Spider-Man universe.    Fast action and, as the first film, contemporary, especially with its Hip-Hop influence and style.   Characters such as Miguel O'Hara's Spider-Man 2099, a motorcycling Spider-Woman, and Pravit Prabhakar were intriguing.   Potential TV and movie spin-offs?   I am here for it. My criticisms-Across the Spider-Verse felt longer than it had to be.   It did what 20 years ago, Peter Jackson's LOTR Return of the King, did and had multiple endings.   It kept going on and on. There should also be an epilepsy warning. The flashing lights and colors might be triggering. This animated lane is a fantastic way to tell this Miles Morales story. Preferably he stays here and does not come into live action, but with the popularity of this character, it is inevitable.  9 out of 10 for me. Thoughts? Comments? Hollywood - Spectacle & Sacrifice: Damien Chazelle's Babylon This week, Mr. Chavez & I continue our close out of 2022 (going into this third week of 2023), with a look at one of the most highly-anticipated films of the year (and one of its most polarizing films and biggest box-office disappointments), Damien Chazelle's Babylon. This is certainly a film that defines cinematic ambition, but also thematic and visual excess; A film of grotesque imagery and questionable plot points, Chazelle's love and fascination for the Hollywood's Silent Era and the slow emergence into "Talkies" is divisive at the very least. Rarely does a film emrege that is as beautiful, overblown, and misguided as this three-hour opus. Featuring Hollywood Stars interpreting the lives of early screen stars John Gilbert (Brad Pitt) and Clara Bow (Margot Robbie), and newcomers Diego Calva, Li Jun Li, and Jovan Adepo, as well as Jean Smart, Flea, Lukas Haas, Eric Roberts, Jeff Garlin, and Tobey McGuire. Incredibly problematic, but definitely worth seeing on the big screen, Chazelle's "Love Letter to Cinema and Hate Letter to Los Angeles/Hollywood" is one of the more fascinating spectacles in recent cinema. At first blush, Sam Raimi wasn't a natural fit to direct a Spider-Man film, and yet his 2002 entry into the series did awesome at the box office and is much-beloved to this day. Two years later, he -- along with Tobey Mcguire, Kirsten Dunst, James Franco, and others -- delivered Spider-Man 2, an even better film than the original that builds wonderfully on its themes, characters, and world. Spider-Man 2 also introduces an iconic villain in the form of Albert Molina's Dr. Octopus, who many Spidey fans were glad to see reemerge, at least in passing, in the MCU. Made for an exorbitant amount of money even then ($200 million) and earning an obscene amount of profit (some four times its cost), Spider-Man 2 is still one of the most beloved superhero films ever, even if it hails from an era when the genre wasn't so well-worn and readily-accepted. Today I want to talk about the generosity of men and how it often gets us into trouble and turns us into manginas. And many generous men don't seem to have the word "no" in their vocabularies. It's often said that for a young man to have his father in his life it's generally a good thing because masculine traits are passed down from one generation to the next. But in some cases the qualities that get passed down can be detrimental for the next generation of men. It all depends on many factors including large generational and cultural gaps. My own father is forty years older then me and grew up in Eastern Europe during and after the second world war. He was brought up in a communist country where people tried to live up to the fantasy of collectivist ideals. And women generally are more collective then men and men are more individualistic. So in some ways the battle between collectivist communism and individualistic capitalism in the twentieth could be seen as a fight between a male and female psychology. Women want the safety of numbers by being part of collect and to treat each other fairly in the outside world but in their private lives that's usually where they show their true nature. From what I've seen, men in general tend to be themselves more in public spaces with other people around. And then tend to go home and are fake around their wives trying not to rock the boat and find themselves spending the night in the dog house. But getting back to this idea that generous men are flawed. I think that generous men that are always wanting to help out other people just for the sake of being do gooders are rewarding women for their narcissistic behavior more then they are helping them. I think that men shouldn't bend over backwards to help strangers. I don't care how many times you've watched uncle Ben die in the first Spiderman film with Tobey McGuire. With great power a man shouldn't be forced to take on great responsibility. With great power a man should be free to do whatever the fuck he wants. Why should a successful male be forced to look out for others when others aren't looking out for his best interests? As you've commented, that kind of story requires years of setup. It was much more intuitive to me to assume that the next Avengers movie or Captain Marvel 2 would be Kree/Skrull War. Surely, Carol is not going to wrap that whole thing up in the first Captain Marvel movie. She's going to need her new Avengers team mates to help her no matter how powerful she is. This event could accomplish again what Infinity War did, bringing the Avengers, the Guardians of the Galaxy and Captain America together in the backdrop of a space adventure. What do you think? X-Men” and “X-Men: Dark Phoenix” don't all those storylines sound about the same, myself being a geek, I know they are different.  Do you think it would be the correct move since cinema goers and hardcore geeks have seen one live action version of The Dark Phoenix that did not go over so well and one that hasn't even debuted in cinemas that is all ready getting artistic mud thrown at it, wouldn't it make sense when Feige has creative control over the X-Men to do a “House of M” film first since a lot of people have gotten to know Scarlet Witch and perhaps will have more emotional investment because of her Disney Plus series storyline and then in let's say for argument sake five years just lump “The Dark Phoenix” and “Avengers v. Granted we all knew  months before the Disney/Fox deal  that FF was cancelled because of the film rights situation because Jonathan Hickman basically confirmed  that the comics were canceled over the  film rights still being at Fox(they canceled the comic the same year Fan4stic was released), and not because of the Marvel PR story about the comic having “low sales” but it just irks me that Marvel can be so petty  but  how do you feel about it? And we have also now seen the red and black costume being worn in Europe- which from the early set photos last year made it look like he was just wearing it in New York (to me at least).So I'm curious who he gets this suit from, as I expect Nick Fury will provide the stealth suit he gets - but the red and black costume looks absolutely like a Tony Stark design. Mostly it's become/becoming a trend in the superhero genre. Examples: Black Panther, Wonder Woman, and others that haven't been released or announced yet like Black Widow and Shang Chi.Now, I am not saying it's a bad trend, in fact I have enjoyed immensely the diversity in front of and behind the cameras for these films recently.I guess I also feel, though, that just like for years movies in general, as well as superhero ones, have been helmed by Caucasian males; is it not seen as “right” in today's society for films with a Caucasian lead to be directed by a director of different race/sex? For example can't there be like a Captain America or Iron Man movie directed by say a Ryan Coogler? And just like for many years women led films have also been helmed by male directors. How about a woman directing a male led film? I loved the idea that was thrown around a while ago for Patty Jenkins to direct a Superman movie.Those are just some superficial examples.
