John McKay in conversation with David Eastaugh https://thejohnmckay.bandcamp.com/album/sixes-and-sevens McKay's influence lives on; many of the most influential guitarists of the past four decades credit him as a major influence - Geordie from Killing Joke, Jim Reid of The Jesus And Mary Chain, U2's The Edge, Thurston Moore, Johnny Marr and even the two guitarists - The Cure's Robert Smith and Magazine's John McGeoch - who followed him in The Banshees. McKay's burgeoning status as the anti-guitar hero was halted when he and Banshees drummer Kenny Morris - at odds with Siouxsie and bassist Steve Severin - fled the band just after the start of a tour supporting the group's second album, Join Hands. It was a weekly music paper scandal, later the subject of a BBC documentary, and Siouxsie's vitriol working its way into the lyrics of a later Banshees b-side, "Drop Dead / Celebration". Aside from a solitary single on Marc Riley's In Tape label nearly a decade later, no music was heard from McKay again. So it comes as a major surprise to learn of a pile of excellent recordings made in the years just after he left The Banshees, unheard by all but a very few, some of which feature drummer Kenny Morris, plus Mick Allen from Rema Rema, Matthew Seligman of the Soft Boys and longer-term collaborator Graham Dowdall and John's wife Linda . . . the latter three of whom are now sadly deceased. Sixes And Sevens is an historic lost album. Brazenly genius and bearing fair claim as the lost treasure of the post-punk era, the album collects eleven studio tracks, carefully mastered from original tapes. It's a masterpiece which best speaks for itself.
+++ PLAYLIST +++ · 22:54 – SAINT TERESA von DOVES · 22:48 – TO LIVE FOREVER IN A SKYLIT ROOM (EOMAC REMIX) von SUNDEN · 22:46 – CONFETTI von THE LEMONHEADS · 22:43 – BOUGAINVILLEA von TOBACCO CITY · 22:39 – ENDS MEET von PANDA BEAR · 22:36 – RODEO von SOPHIA KENNEDY · 22:32 – WEIGHT OF DESIRE von TENNIS · 22:28 – SADGIRL von LITANY · 22:24 – BIG JET PLANE von ANGUS & JULIA STONE · 22:21 – GOLDEN WOLF von DOPE LEMON · 22:18 – HÜ von ZÜRI WEST · 22:15 – CORAZÓN ADENTRO (ESCORPIO) von ASTROPICAL · 22:11 – ME PASA (PISCIS) von ASTROPICAL · 22:09 – THE NIGHT BEFORE von THE BLACK KEYS · 21:58 – SCHWARZE MAGIE von DIE HEITERKEIT · 21:54 – LEFT BEHIND von DROPKICK · 21:52 – ADORE von CHILD STAR · 21:48 – HAPPY HOUSE von SIOUXSIE AND THE BANSHEES · 21:43 – I CAN'T IMAGINE (WHY YOU FEEL THIS WAY) von SHARON VAN ETTEN & THE ATTACHMENT THEORY · 21:37 – SOMETHIN' AIN'T RIGHT von SHARON VAN ETTEN & THE ATTACHMENT THEORY · 21:35 – EVER FALLEN IN LOVE (WITH SOMEONE YOU SHOULDN'T'VE) von BUZZCOCKS · 21:30 – INDIO von SHARON VAN ETTEN & THE ATTACHMENT THEORY · 21:23 – AND NOTHING IS FOREVER von THE CURE · 21:16 – TROUBLE von SHARON VAN ETTEN & THE ATTACHMENT THEORY · 21:12 – IDIOT BOX von SHARON VAN ETTEN & THE ATTACHMENT THEORY · 21:04 – EVERY TIME THE SUN COMES UP von SHARON VAN ETTEN

What's up, dudes? It's a Siouxsie and the Banshees Christmas, as Rikki Meece from the Sleigh Bells and Mistletoe Podcast and I break down two songs from goth rock band! Yep, it's “Israel” v ”Il Est Né Le Divin Enfant” in the Thunderdome! We talk the band's catalogue, their Christmas music, their look and sound, and definitely their lyrics! In other words, we get into it all! Two songs enter, one song leaves!"Israel" was released as a stand-alone single in between the albums Kaleidoscope (1980) and Juju (1981) on November 28, 1980 by record label Polydor. While touring in Europe in autumn 1980, the band wanted to write a Christmas song to be released on time for December of that year. They composed it on the road, which was quite unusual for them. It was the first time that Siouxsie Sioux and Steven Severin composed a single with guitarist John McGeoch and drummer Budgie. The song was co-produced by Nigel Gray: it prominently featured a 30 singer Welsh choir on backing vocals. It soon became a classic of their repertoire and was regularly performed during encores at each of their tours.Subsequently, “Il Est Né Le Divin Enfant” was released as B-side to “Melt” on November 26, 1982. The tune for this carol can be found in R. Grosjean's Airs des noêl lorrain (1862), where it is called 'Ancien air de chasse', and it is indeed the case that an old Normandy hunting tune 'Tête bizarde', though in 6/8, is melodically very similar. The Shorter New Oxford Book of Carols editors postulated that the tune is an 18th century composition in a rustic style. The text of this carol was first published in Dom G. Legeay's Noêls anciens (1875-6). Most Common translation is from Edward Bliss Reed from 1930.Synths? Check. ‘80s Goth videos? Yup. 19th century carol with a quasi-canon? Definitely! So put on your makeup, grab your mic, and sing along with this post-punk goth episode! Spinning Out (another music podcast) We talk to artists about their favorite albums and go on wild tangents. This is a podcast where we talk to guests about their favorite albums. This week on the pod we're joined by Doug Gillard of Guided By Voices. We talked about Siouxsie and the Banshees' 1980 album, "Kaleidoscope." We also chat about growing up in Ohio, Doug's first bands and our Charlotte connection. On top of playing in Guided by Voices, Doug has also spent time in Death of Samantha, Cobra Verde, Nada Surf and so many others. We chat a lot on the episode about one of his first bands with his friend Frasier Sims, Children's Crusade. He's currently working on releasing their discography on LP, in one place for the first time on November 15th on Splendid Research. It's totally remixed, remastered and is a total gem that complements this episode really well. So if you like early proto-goth, punk, or post-punk then keep an eye out for that in the coming months. Guided By Voices just released their newest album, "Strut of Kings," which you can pick up now. This week we're discussing the remaining albums by Siouxsie and the Banshees. This era covers 1984-1995, into their subsequent break up. While there are still plenty of beloved albums in this era, this is also where some complications hit the band. One of which being their brief stint with The Cure's Robert Smith on guitar. It's not all good, folks, but there's still great stuff to be had here. Be sure to check out part 1 of our Siouxsie episodes, which is episode 190.Closing track: "Running Town" from Hyaena (1984)Patreonhttps://www.patreon.com/everyalbumeverMerchhttps://pandermonkey.creator-spring.com/Mike's EP:Pander Monkey on Bandcamp, Spotify, Apple,Instagram:Mike @pandermonkeyAlex @everyalbumalexTom @tomosmansoundsHistory Tom's stuff:Music on Spotify, ApplePodcast on SpotifySubstackWebsiteMike's Picks:Hyaena (1984) -- Best Album, Personal FavoriteSuperstition (1991) -- Worst Album, Least FavoriteAlex's Picks:Tinderbox (1986) -- Best Album, Personal FavoriteSuperstition (1991) -- Worst Album, Least FavoriteAlbums we discussed this episode...Hyaena (1984)Tinderbox (1986)Through the Looking Glass (1987)Peepshow (1988)Superstition (1991)The Rapture (1995)

WE'VE GOT BATS IN OUR BELFRY!!!!! Grey would be the colour if we only had a way to colour-coat episodes. It's Goth Month here on Pod Like a Hole, so get out your choker, get your eyeliner, and pick a safeword , we are covering Siouxsie and the Banshees and it is getting DARK. It is Intern Eric's final pick of the season, and does he go out with a bang or a whimper? You be the judge. It's the 1980 record that brought Siouxsie to a new level of rock. Listen as your boys pick apart the ground breaking licks from John McGeouch, basslines from Steve Severin, and poundings from Budgie. And vamping up front, is the true queen of the dungeon, Siouxsie Sioux. Your hosts go into the history of the band, discuss at what point post-punk became goth, and how inspirational this band ended up being. Then its a track by track review of Juju. It's a whole episode of pain and pleasure. The bitter and the sweet. Enjoy. This week we're discussing every album by Siouxsie and the Banshees from 1978 to 1982. Aside from being one of the most influential bands in modern music, Siouxsie Sioux and the Banshees played a major role in pioneering goth music, along with Bauhaus and the Cure.
We're honored to welcome one of music's greatest living musicians, Budgie! In this sprawling conversation we cover all the bases - coming up in Liverpool with Big in Japan, joining The Slits for their revolutionary album Cut, and joining Siouxsie and the Banshees where he would stay until the bitter end in the mid-90s. He also married Siouxsie and did their side project The Creatures for many years as well. Last year he teamed up with podcasting partner (and fellow legend), former Cure drummer Lol Tollhurst and super producer Jacknife Lee (both former guests) to release the album Los Angeles, one of the best of the year. Budgie touches on his entire career including working with Robert Smith in the Banshees, drumming with the Indigo Girls, and everything else. He's one of the best to ever do it! YUH 153 is "Siouxsie and the Banshees The Early Years" by Laurence Hedges! Our guest's first book is a fresh take on the early years of one of our favorite bands. From middle class Chislehurst Kent, young Susan Ballion would take the train into London to follow bands like the Slits and the Sex Pistols, never expecting her own career to far exceed the accomplishments of her mentors. Some 37 years later, the ill-described "Ice Queen" continues her wildly successful return to the stage, a tour Laurence caught twice and recounts with us... and you. Our third episode on the inimitable Siouxsie Sioux, we might be good until Laurence publishes his next volume on the band in June of next year. YUH 149 is Aaron's Audio Edibles Vol. 13 - Juju by Siouxsie and the Banshees with Herman De Tollenaere! Siouxsie's 4th album, release in 1981, might have defined a genre that lives on today in such bands as the Cure, My Chemical Romance, Marilyn Manson and Garbage... that being the type of music identified by critics as "Goth". But don't say that Siouxsie, who has always fought vehamently against stereotypes. Once again, punk rock journalist/musician Herman De Tollenaere joins us on All Saints Even to break down an album that even our judicious co-host Aaron could not find a flawed track on. That's right! The 4th Annual Gothtober is here!Takeshi and Santos kick it off with Wednesday and Siouxsie and the Banshees - Juju
This week's record is packed with venom, darkness, and plenty of ass-kicking - Siouxsie and the Banshees' "Juju."Siouxsie and the Banshees' influence is irrefutable, and their fingerprints are all over the advent of goth rock (whether or not they dig that idea is another story haha).Cody and Hilary discuss the addition of two key members, bringing the Banshees to arguably their most formidable lineup. From their thoughts on the idea of voodoo, to a track revolving around a serial killer, Siouxsie has never shied away from speaking her mind on topics that others may dance around. "Juju" is a record that proudly shows its teeth, and we are amped to share some of its story. Thanks for listening! Joseph Brooks was instrumental in shaping the entire Los Angeles music and club scene for decades. His impeccable musical taste became his job and nowadays, he'd be called an influencer. In 1981, with partner Henry Peck, he opened the groundbreaking alternative record store Vinyl Fetish, known as much for their sarcastic clerks as for the import records they stocked. In store appearances by artists befriended in the UK before they became famous, like Siouxsie And The Banshees, Duran Duran and Depeche Mode put the store on the map. Soon, Joseph and Henry started their first club The Veil, devoted to death rock, which later became known as goth. From there, Joseph either conceived of and/or spun discs at the hottest clubs in town: Fetish, Glam Slam, Sin-A-Matic, English Acid, Cherry and more. In this episode, Joseph and hostess Pleasant Gehman compare notes from the Hollywood underground during the 80's and 90's and into the early two thousands. They reminisce about Dee Dee Ramone's last performance ever at Club Makeup, talk about Hollywood's early 80's punk and goth scenes and much more. Learn more about your ad choices. Miki and Budgie met a long time ago – was it after a Curve show?Miki with Red hair, Budgie with blonde they were a good Match!Struck up many enlightening conversations!!The lost evenings with Donald - hairdresser to the stars.Budgie drank in Heaven (Underneath the Arches) Picked up a date but didn't realise it, Not green, but pleasant, especially after a few Manhattans! We were all young then! Emotional Babies!Budgie and Lol love Miki's Memoir! Honest and Authentic - which it's hard to Be. Miki and Lol shared the same streets of London but never met.We walked everywhere - no phones - no way to contact Like a homing pigeon Budgie always found his way home Miki followed the tube stations - Roaming with Emma but no walkie-talkie in 5 years! Complex Band relationships suffer from outside pressure and from people with chisels. Lol empathises 100 % Miki's experience with Emma - as his with Robert. Will we all ever speak again? Is Morrissey bitter? Many memoirs end with courtroom drama. Malcom was a rotter says Lydon. Morrissey needs an editor says Lol! That's a complement says Miki – it's a proper Mills & Boon. Miki haunted by Mike Hedges' old house in France. Lol recalls a depressing Disintegration. But Pool table respite with Simon and the funny cue ball. Lol loved Miraval. The Slits loved being looked after at Ridge Farm Studios. Budgie met Viv again at a Berlin book festival - they had cake and tea and grown-up conversations. Miki is happy she had the band but happier in her new job - she's had the best of both worlds. Lol wanted to be present for his son and so no touring thru' his teens. We love writing as much as making music - Lol ran away at the destruction of the band. He came to America and America saved him.____‘God Bless America' – Irving Berlin.
