"Automated Paradise" The Bristol-born Jon Klein got his start with the late-seventies post-punk outfit Europeans. After their break-up he formed the porto-goth band Specimen, who put out a handful of winning singles, but splintered before an album could be released. In 1987 Klein joined Siouxsie and the Banshees and went on to record three records with them: Peepshow, Superstition and The Rapture. Although Klein left the band in 1994, from there he moved from strength to strength, playing and recording with Shriekbak, Thomas Dolby, Talvin Singh and Space Tribe. He toured with Sinead O'Connor as her lead guitarist in 1995 and he played everywhere from Pinkpop to Glastonbury to Lollapalooza. Klein is one of those guys who has always stayed busy: he played in the band SNAIL, toured Southeast Asia as the musical director for Dr. Penguin's Magic Circus, went to art school and knocked out a degree in Fine Art and Critical Theory, has his own production company called Ground Control, co- produced an album for Fangoria, which hit Number One in Spain, composed soundtracks for film and theatre companies and played in the supergroup, Spammed with Horace Panter, Rat Scabies and Terry Edwards. He's also a filmmaker, an international fine artist and he is a member of the Tuned In Community Music Project with Jah Wobble. Klein and Jah Wobble have put out several fabulous albums, including A Brief History of Now and their latest effort, Automated Paradise. A jittery blast of searing post-punk and cultural dread, Automated Paradise finds Klein in fine form, slashing brilliantly away through each composition with fiery resolve. www.bombshellradio.com (http://www.bombshellradio.com) www.stereoembersmagazine.com (http://www.stereoembersmagazine.com) www.alexgreenbooks.com (http://www.alexgreenbooks.com) IG + BLUESKY + THREADS: @emberspodcast Email: editor@stereoembersmagazine.com

Mainstream culture in the 1980s was a Ronnie Reagan wet dream. Conformity and corporate consolidation made for a rough time for unique artists looking to have their voices heard. Luckily, there was college radio, and a glowing underground rock scene featuring a truly eclectic collection of bands. ATTT is honored to welcome back our good friend Jeremy Levy and pod newbie David Robinson. Jeremy and David lived the life of College Rock, as DJs and scenesters in the late 80s and early 90s in Columbia, Missouri, one of America's premier college towns with a great local radio station. Top Ten Essential College Rock Bands takes us back to those heady times when being weird was a Kool Thing, if you knew about it. What happens when punk stops trying to shock and starts trying to haunt? In this episode, we revisit The Scream, the extraordinary debut album by Siouxsie & the Banshees. Nearly fifty years on, it still feels unlike anything else released during the first wave of punk. Sparse, unsettling and fiercely original, The Scream pointed towards post-punk before the genre even had a name. From John McKay's jagged guitar work and Kenny Morris's restless drumming to Siouxsie's commanding, enigmatic voice, we explore how the band created an atmosphere that was as important as the songs themselves. In this episode I am in discussion with Dr. Andrew Webber.https://www.facebook.com/share/1F15mx4ea3/https://buymeacoffee.com/lownoiseWhy buy me a coffee?Low Noise is proudly ad-free. YUH 264 - Laurence Hedges returns to Yeah Uh Huh with his third and final volume on the legendary British punk band Siouxsie and the Banshees. This time he covers the last three albums in the band's discography, Peepshow, Superstition and The Rapture. In between the recordings, Siouxsie performed in Tim Burton's 1989 box office smash Batman, partied with Jane's Addiction and Ice T as part of the very first Lollapalooza lineup and did side projects with John CAle and The Creatures. Laurence has realized a level of celebrity in Great Britain, having made appearances with the famed rock journalist John Raab and longest standing Banshee guitarist John McKay. Frontfiguren Siouxsie Sioux var – og er – noget helt særligt. Hendes tekster er mørke, konfronterende og ofte ubehageligt ærlige. Hun skrev ikke for at behage. Hun skrev for at udfordre. For at stille spørgsmål.

The August 1991 issue has a few pop culture topics to go deep on. Guns 'N Roses gets covered with a What Now concert review AND a review of Danny Sugerman's very pretentious-sounding book about them in the brand-new column Read It (though probably don't; it only earns one pip as the month's book bomb). Paula Abdul gets a bomb review of her new album Spellbound AND name-checked as "Paula Abdrool" in the Keanu Reeves/Alex Winter cover Q&A. Otherwise, we get a lot of material we might like more coverage on, like: Siouxsie And The Banshees' Superstition; Ethan Hawke's Mystery Date hair; Tori Spelling's 18th birthday party; and what Anne L. could not have foreseen would be an incredible revolving door of BulletBoys. You don't need an extra arm à la The Dark Backward to enjoy our commentary on all of the above and more!QUICK LINKS

Our guest today is a drummer, percussionist and songwriter who cut his teeth on the St Helens cabaret circuit, at just 13 years old. However that would prove to be a world away from the groundbreaking career he would pursue in the world of Post-Punk and alternative rock. Peter Clarke is better known professionally under the name of Budgie. A self taught timekeeper, his unique style has lent itself to the likes of The Slits, The Glove, The Creatures and of course imperial phase of Siouxsie and the Banshees. Over the last 40 odd years Budgie has laid down the rhythm for alternative music and now he has written a book about his life, his journey through the music industry and most importantly his understanding of self. The Absence is much more than a rock n roll diary its an honest exploration of the factors that drove him from obscurity to fame and the very edge of control. Its an honest and unflinching look at a life that until now has only ever been glimpsed from the outside. We are delighted to welcome the musical pioneer that is Budgie to the show. Before all that Deb gets caught sneaking out of a film premier by Pauline Black and then has a smashing time with Phillip Glass. John McKay in conversation with David Eastaugh https://thejohnmckay.bandcamp.com/album/sixes-and-sevens McKay's influence lives on; many of the most influential guitarists of the past four decades credit him as a major influence - Geordie from Killing Joke, Jim Reid of The Jesus And Mary Chain, U2's The Edge, Thurston Moore, Johnny Marr and even the two guitarists - The Cure's Robert Smith and Magazine's John McGeoch - who followed him in The Banshees.

McKay's burgeoning status as the anti-guitar hero was halted when he and Banshees drummer Kenny Morris - at odds with Siouxsie and bassist Steve Severin - fled the band just after the start of a tour supporting the group's second album, Join Hands. It was a weekly music paper scandal, later the subject of a BBC documentary, and Siouxsie's vitriol working its way into the lyrics of a later Banshees b-side, "Drop Dead / Celebration". Aside from a solitary single on Marc Riley's In Tape label nearly a decade later, no music was heard from McKay again. So it comes as a major surprise to learn of a pile of excellent recordings made in the years just after he left The Banshees, unheard by all but a very few, some of which feature drummer Kenny Morris, plus Mick Allen from Rema Rema, Matthew Seligman of the Soft Boys and longer-term collaborator Graham Dowdall and John's wife Linda . . . the latter three of whom are now sadly deceased.

Sixes And Sevens is an historic lost album. Brazenly genius and bearing fair claim as the lost treasure of the post-punk era, the album collects eleven studio tracks, carefully mastered from original tapes. It's a masterpiece which best speaks for itself.

«Sharon Van Etten & The Attachment Theory» ist unser brandneues Sounds! What's up, dudes? It's a Siouxsie and the Banshees Christmas, as Rikki Meece from the Sleigh Bells and Mistletoe Podcast and I break down two songs from goth rock band! Yep, it's “Israel” v ”Il Est Né Le Divin Enfant” in the Thunderdome! We talk the band's catalogue, their Christmas music, their look and sound, and definitely their lyrics! In other words, we get into it all! Two songs enter, one song leaves!"Israel" was released as a stand-alone single in between the albums Kaleidoscope (1980) and Juju (1981) on November 28, 1980 by record label Polydor. While touring in Europe in autumn 1980, the band wanted to write a Christmas song to be released on time for December of that year. They composed it on the road, which was quite unusual for them. It was the first time that Siouxsie Sioux and Steven Severin composed a single with guitarist John McGeoch and drummer Budgie. The song was co-produced by Nigel Gray: it prominently featured a 30 singer Welsh choir on backing vocals. It soon became a classic of their repertoire and was regularly performed during encores at each of their tours.Subsequently, “Il Est Né Le Divin Enfant” was released as B-side to “Melt” on November 26, 1982. The tune for this carol can be found in R. Grosjean's Airs des noêl lorrain (1862), where it is called 'Ancien air de chasse', and it is indeed the case that an old Normandy hunting tune 'Tête bizarde', though in 6/8, is melodically very similar. The Shorter New Oxford Book of Carols editors postulated that the tune is an 18th century composition in a rustic style. The text of this carol was first published in Dom G. Legeay's Noêls anciens (1875-6). Most Common translation is from Edward Bliss Reed from 1930.Synths? Check. ‘80s Goth videos? Yup. 19th century carol with a quasi-canon? Definitely! So put on your makeup, grab your mic, and sing along with this post-punk goth episode! In this sprawling conversation we cover all the bases - coming up in Liverpool with Big in Japan, joining The Slits for their revolutionary album Cut, and joining Siouxsie and the Banshees where he would stay until the bitter end in the mid-90s. He also married Siouxsie and did their side project The Creatures for many years as well. Last year he teamed up with podcasting partner (and fellow legend), former Cure drummer Lol Tollhurst and super producer Jacknife Lee (both former guests) to release the album Los Angeles, one of the best of the year. Budgie touches on his entire career including working with Robert Smith in the Banshees, drumming with the Indigo Girls, and everything else. He's one of the best to ever do it! Joseph Brooks was instrumental in shaping the entire Los Angeles music and club scene for decades. His impeccable musical taste became his job and nowadays, he'd be called an influencer. In 1981, with partner Henry Peck, he opened the groundbreaking alternative record store Vinyl Fetish, known as much for their sarcastic clerks as for the import records they stocked. In store appearances by artists befriended in the UK before they became famous, like Siouxsie And The Banshees, Duran Duran and Depeche Mode put the store on the map. Soon, Joseph and Henry started their first club The Veil, devoted to death rock, which later became known as goth. From there, Joseph either conceived of and/or spun discs at the hottest clubs in town: Fetish, Glam Slam, Sin-A-Matic, English Acid, Cherry and more. In this episode, Joseph and hostess Pleasant Gehman compare notes from the Hollywood underground during the 80's and 90's and into the early two thousands. They reminisce about Dee Dee Ramone's last performance ever at Club Makeup, talk about Hollywood's early 80's punk and goth scenes and much more.  Learn more about your ad choices.
