We continue our series called #Franklymydear on films inspired by Mary Shelley's classic novel Frankenstein with our penultimate installment. This week we're examining an independent production filmed right in one of our guest's backyard. THE ANGRY BLACK GIRL AND HER MONSTER delivers a smart and disarmingly thoughtful approach to the Frankenstein scenario, repositioning the narrative in the modern, rural south and tackling some pretty heavy themes. It follows Vicaria, a brilliant young student who theorizes that death is merely a disease awaiting a cure. When she resurrects her brother following his untimely death, she unknowingly releases a horror upon the community, although it is not immediately the horror you might imagine. The film is a compelling portrait of the power of identity in the face of systemic obstacles and systemic abuses that -- despite its heavy subject -- leaves a remarkably hopeful statement with us.We're joined by new FoGger Chris Clark and Quarterly Queen Jess Fischli to discuss this impressive film as well as for a Patron-only segment of "Whatcha"s. Happy Black History Month! And, as such, Happy Black Director's Month here on Progressively Horrified. We're starting off hot with a new take on the Frankenstein story, "An Angry Black Girl and her Monster". In a way, it's a little bit of a "what if Moon Girl and Devil Dinosaur was a horror story?" but it's also got a little bit of "The Wire" flavor to it. It's clearly made with not a lot of money, but some excellent casting choices. Some of the direction late in this one is a little puzzling, but we think it's still very much worth a watch! ★ Support this podcast on Patreon ★

With allusions to the murders of Tamir Rice and Trayvon Martin, affecting depictions of violence against Black communities, and examples of intergenerational trauma, TABGAHM strikes an emotional chord. It also has moments of humor and joy that make it an enjoyable watch (and rewatch). This movie hasn't gotten a lot of press in the horror community, but it should Check it out on Shudder. The novel FRANKENSTEIN OR THE MODERN PROMETHEUS was written back in 1818, by Mary Shelley, and since then the story has become one of the most famous stories of all time. And Frankenstein's Monster is one of the most iconic creatures to ever been created. Films, plays, and spin off novels have been made of it. And in many cases, the story has been used as the basis of other tales. The new movie THE ANGRY BLACK GIRL AND HER MONSTER (2023) is just another example.Vicaria (Laya DeLeon Hayes) lives with her widower father. Years earlier her mother was murdered in a random shooting and most recently, her brother Chris (Edem Atsu-Swanzy) was killed in a drug related gang hit. Science is Vicaria's thing, and she has learned how to bring back the dead. Unfortunately, her brother Chris comes back yet isn't the young man she used to know. The movie was written and directed as the feature length debut for Bomani J. Story. The film's cast also includes Denzel Whitaker and Chad Coleman among others. Released earlier in the year in a limited run, the film quickly landed up on VOD and the Shudder television network. Chosen as a contest winning film by listener and podcaster Amy for the Halloween movie discussion, your co-hosts take a look at this new Frankenstein take and give their thoughts on it.
