Individuals may contribute to the fund immediately. "Even as recovery efforts begin, I am deeply aware that many of our own members, leaders, and community partners are among those most affected. In fact, I am personally awaiting news on the safety of family and friends, including several AFN leaders who live in the impacted areas. This storm has challenged us in ways we never anticipated, but it has also revealed the true solidarity of our community. Joe Tolbert Jr is an organizer, executive, minister, writer, and commentator whose work and passion lie at the intersection of art, culture, spirituality and social justice. Joe T. was born in Knoxville, Tennessee, but had a balanced mix of urban and rural upbringing. His Father's family in Georgia were a tight nit group of people who always gather around Grandma's house. Being out in the country at Grandma's, Joe T's cousins would always want to rouse him by calling him the city cousin. A really nostalgic memory that he shares is; His dad would load him and his siblings up in the car and go on long road trips, spending quality time together. Leaving Knoxville, to attend graduate school in New York City, then returning to Knoxville, Joe struggles to adjust to the rapid growth of his home town. Joe for a long period of life never considered himself to be Appalachian, until some friends with the Stay Project, pointed out the fact that he indeed lives in the Appalachia Mountain range. He is now proud to represent a wider understanding of what it means to be Appalachian ( or Affrilachian ). In 2023, Joe was named Waymakers Collective's first Executive Director, driven by his personal belief that art and community can be a powerful force that can create real change. Alex Wilson conducts this interview with his grandmother and former Kentucky State Representative, Marie Rader. Coming from humble beginnings on Horse Lick Creek in Jackson County, Marie has always been one to defy all odds stacked against her. She shares a story of her childhood telling about how her mother would pin her dress tail under a table leg while working in their family's store, before the family moved up to Sand Gap. She has made it a point to involve herself with anything she could to better the community, and has never shunned hard work. Playing a key role in getting the road established up to Rocky Hill (McCammon Ridge Road). After the passing of her husband and her being 52 years of age, Marie decided to run for State Representative. With most of the State politicians being men, and her being one of only three women in the Republican Party, the odds were definitely not in her favor. She worked hard, traveled from county to county and developed good relationships with everyone she possibly could. With a heart for the people and a drive to get things done, Marie held her position for 22 years before retiring. In her time as State Rep. Marie had a huge role in the new road up Big Hill and also the new Highway 30 on the south end of Jackson County. Though Alex conducted the interview, we here at Appalachian Imagination found it an honor to be a part of preserving a conversation between a man and his grandmother. Thank you for being patient while we took a little break through the month of July! We hope you enjoyed listening back to some of the older episodes. It is truly an honor and privilege to do each and every interview with our wonderful friends and neighbors. In this short ad free episode, Jason talks about logging and harvesting trees. From the very first European settlers, logging and harvesting timber has been a crucial part of shaping the world we live in. The pioneers would happen up on the place they chose to settle, cut and hew logs, and build homes and other buildings to raise their families in. Dragging the logs with oxen or horses and mules, then they would soon raise a house. Logging became more industrial after the invention of the saw mill, and also saw a big boom with railroads. Though it saw somewhat of a decline during the Civil War, it never stopped. In the early 1900's the boom continued, then had a big increase during WW2. We challenge you to look around your home one day, and see how many wood items that you spot in your home. Anything that you find made of wood at some point in time was brought out of the forest by loggers. If you would like to share with us all that you found, tell us about it in the Questions section of this podcast. We thank God for his wonderful bounty, that we should be good stuarts of! Our good friend, and returning guest, Evan Lakes joins, Jason and his son Carter for this episode. They talk a little about fishing and how it is a good clean and fairly cheap hobby that can actually put food on the table. Then as it often does the conversation turns to movies and TV shows that all of the guys enjoy. Written by a fellow Kentuckian, Robert Kirkman, The Walking Dead held a big segment of this episode. It is one of Carter's favorite shows to watch. With the dialogue meandering through several topics, the subject of the Moon landing was brought up. There are so many theories on the matter and opinions vary greatly. Do you think Neil Armstrong and Buzz stepped foot on it? Another famous Kentuckian that was brought up was Charles Manson and how he was so charismatic and twisted in his thinking. Jim Jones and the Koolaide was also talked about. Hunting, Fishing and Healthy Habits. Justin tells us about Mouth taping/Hostage Tape. His health routines may seem a little weird to some folks, but Justin really puts his heart into being a healthier person. He says the tape took a couple of days to adjust to but he has really slept well since. Good sleep is when our bodies recover and is really important to our overall health. Jason gives an update on the garden his family has been growing. Working hard to use no chemicals, it is labor intensive but well worth it with good healthy results. They have started a fruit and berry orchard with blackberries, strawberries, raspberries, grapes, an apple tree and blueberries. They have also planted a lot of different vegetables that they will process and put away for future use and maybe even sell a few at the local Farmer's Market. The conversation then switches over to fishing. Justin has done some fishing in his time but isn't a fan of eating them. His family would take him to Florida once a year fishing as a child and he burnt out on the taste of fish through those trips.(They would eat fish twice a day for seven days straight.) The Bowman's have been doing a little fishing and storing them away in the freezer. Neither of the guys are much on hunting but they share a few stories of that as well. Jason enjoys eating wild game and Justin doesn't enjoy anything that tastes gamey. Both agree that hunting is a good thing and promote it even if they're no good at it. Justin and Jason, start this episode off by paying tribute to Stringbean Akemon. They touch a little on who he was and discuss the Annual Stringbean Bluegrass Festival that is held at the Stringbean Memorial Park, in Gray Hawk Kentucky. Talking about music there is no way Randy Hayes could be left out of the conversation. Randy was not only Keith Whitley's guitar player he was also his friend who was alongside KW for the entirety of his career. Keith Whitley's music still carries a huge impact on country music. Jason being a musician, told about the Gemini Jam, a music festival that he and his wife Amy had played just a few days ago. The Gemini Jam is one of the many shows that is held by Bash On The Branch Promotions in Redlick Kentucky. The episode then gets caught up in a whirlwind discussion about favorite and most influential musicians throughout the history of modern music. The guys tried to build a Mt. NOT ALL HEROES WEAR CAPES! This is a very special episode in honor of Memorial Day. Papaw Paul joins us once again to host this great episode with two, local members of the D.A.V. Danny Robinson served in the USAF from 1976-1980. With his family being very supportive of him joining, Danny spent his time working as a mechanic on F4 Fighter Jets. The only thing that he didn't enjoy was washing planes and dealing with PD680 cleaner. Though he was never deployed over seas Danny holds his time in the service near and dear to his heart. Danny would never be one to say it but he has played a huge roll in the progress of the local D.A.V. and the Jackson County Veterans Park. Jim Bryant served in the US Army for a total of 22 years. His mother in no way wanted him to join but when Jim was 17 years old she finally took him and signed him up. He spent some time in Vietnam and also served 11 years in Germany. He worked as a mechanic throughout his military career and always viewed it as a job that he signed up to do. Monday, May 27, 2024 at the Jackson County Veterans Park in McKee Kentucky. The local chapter of The Disabled American Veterans (D.A.V.) will hold a ceremony honoring all of our Veterans who never made it home from war. The ceremony begins at 11:00am and everyone is welcome to attend. SUPPORT YOUR LOCAL D.A.V.!!! This is a very special episode for Mental Health Awareness Month. Justin having suffered with anxiety throughout his life conducts this episode with three guest who have dealt with a lot of the same issues. One third of all adults have reported either anxiety or depression. 301,000,000 people in the world have anxiety disorders. Bethany Isaacs who is a registered nurse, tells that her first bought with anxiety happened when she was 22yrs old, and that lead to depression. Being a mother she says that her children helped her to hold on. Getting it through it she first gives credit to God. She has also attended therapy, recommends worrying about one thing at a time, genetic testing, counseling, a letting go journal, and the 5 senses technique (touch, taste, smell, see, hear) *Mental disorders lead to physical disorders. Kody Bingham says that anxiety started with her in high school and really hit her hard with the passing of her dad in 2014. She never told anyone until she had all four of her children. Kody's mother talked her into going to the doctor and that helped a lot. Until she and one of her kids was involved in a head on collision. It then came back and she is still working through it mentally. She knows that God spared her and her child and she reccomends talking to someone about it. *Trauma really increases anxiety. Brittany Rose who is Justin's cousin, feels that it is a family trait passed down. Her problems with anxiety started in high school and got worse with time. Brittany remembers vividly her first panic attack, during which she thought she was having a heart attack. She had to quit her job when her daughter was 2 due to anxiety and her mother would have to help her with several everyday tasks for a period of time. She is now off of medication and is still attending therapy. She recommends Church and building a relationship with God, as well as genetic testing, and therapy. *You care more than you should. *The you before anxiety, is who you are. One when he peed in the trashcan at grandma's house, another when he drank a bottle of rubbing alcohol, and some other wild sleepwalking events. Justin, himself suffered one incident that involved sleepwalking. Waking up naked at a friends house with no clothes in sight. From there it all kind of spirals out of control. Justin sets the woods on fire. Twice. Jason's brothers also set the woods on fire once. Melvin (Blue) Lakes, was born in 1947 and lived in Sand Gap, Kentucky until he was 10 years old. His family then moved to the city of McKee and has owned the Lakes Funeral Home since. After retiring from the Health Department, he then ran for the office of Coroner and held that title for 21 years, and in all that time he worked in the funeral home as well. Blue shares a few stories of childhood, with one of those being, how he got the nickname Blue. Another story he shared was about him and another letting the chickens out of the coop. It is a very funny story ending with a couple kids getting their tails tanned. He also shares a few stories of how things used to be in Jackson County. One of those stories is why the theatre in Sand Gap closed its doors. Mr. Lakes has always been a pillar of the community and we are thankful to have had him as a guest. He has never failed to show love and kindness to everyone he meets. We thank God for his mercy and Kindness! We thank you for listening and all of your support! Out of the past~We were gifted a campaign poster from 1957 by Tina and Doyle Turner! The poster read as follows~For Sheriff-VOTE FOR GEORGE W. FELTY A Man Who Has The ABILITY, NERVE and COURAGE To Work Day and Night To Stop the Crime Wave that is Threating Jackson County. Republican Primary May 28, 1957. Though most of us don't remember George being the sheriff or being part owner in the theatre that once graced Sand Gap, Kentucky. A lot of people still remember him in his later years, driving at very low rates of speed through Jackson County. Sure folks would be a little upset if they got behind him in traffic, but otherwise we have never heard an ill word spoke of him. Justin has memories of him giving him candy and quarters as a child. Jason remembers traveling to McKee with his grandpa after George got his license revoked and his papaw picking him up and taking him to Mckee. George alway dressed sharp and greeted folks with a smile. The week this episode was recorded, Jackson County lost a lady who was loved by all who knew her, Mrs. Judy Anderson. She had taught Spanish at Jackson County High School for a number of years and left a positive impact on a lot of children. We send prayers for peace and comfort to all who are troubled by her passing. Healthy Habits~Justin has been lifting weights and pushing muscles to the limits. Jason and Amy have been getting ready for planting season. The guys go on to talk about several other things including the Eclipse taking place on April 8th. The song is titled Sweet Home Kentucky and can be found on all streaming platforms. In this interview Justin and Jason get the full rundown on Shane's musical journey to date. As you will hear he in his powerful vocals and the skills he has on guitar, Shane is loaded with talent! Out of the past~Doyle's store was robbed in Sand Gap in the year 1993. First off we want to thank all the men and women who have served or are serving in the United States Military! They have all put their life on the line to protect our freedom and we are forever grateful for each and every one. Jim sat down with Jason and shared his story of life in the United States Army. He has lived in several other countries while serving and also fought in the Vietnam War. Jim along with some other veterans a few years back set out to get a Veterans Memorial built and established in Jackson County, Kentucky. Their efforts were a huge success! The Jackson County Veteran's Monument and Memorial is in memory of and to honor the men and women of Jackson County that have served this great nation to preserve the freedom we enjoy today. The pentagram shaped memorial's 5 sides represent all branches of our military. Army, Navy, Coast Guard, Air Force, and Marines. The Jackson County Veterans Memorial is located at- 20 McCammon Ridge Road-McKee, Kentucky 40447 GPS:37.41898,-83.96929 Thank you to the JCDC and all the inmates who maintain the beautiful park! When you visit, please be kind and respectful. Toward the end of this episode Jim gives us a couple of wonderful stories as a bonus! The first is a more detailed Storie of The Pigg cemetery. Three Brothers are buried there side by side that died within six months of each other from an STD they picked up in New Orleans during the Civil War. The second story is of a lady that Jim's grandfather found who had passed away while traversing through, what is now part of the Daniel Boone National Forest. Her name was Matilda Hurst (Tildy Hump). She was of a drifter type nature and the story goes that, her husband had left her years before, taking their young daughter with him. After that Tildy spent her life, waking through Eastern Kentucky in search of her husband and child. We thank God for each and every story that we are able to preserve! Out of the past- The guys spoke a little more about World War 2. US President proposed speed limit of 40mph across the nation in order to cut down on the use of rubber, oil, and gasoline. Though that doesn't seem very fast 40mph was a high rate of speed for a Model T or Model A Ford. Folks today would surely panic if such were even suggested. Healthy Habits-The benefit of Dandelions. They are heart healthy and also good for the liver. Shilajit tastes horrible but really has a lot of benefits. It is good for vitality, the liver, has anti-cancer properties, and is also good to help regulate blood sugar. Whether it be a few chickens in the yard to provide eggs or raising a garden and canning, we suggest you do as much as you can for yourself to be a healthier human! Sports- The Lady Owls of Owsley County to it all the way to Rupp Arena, however they were beat out of the tournament by Bowling Green in the first round. UK was defeated by Oakland in the NCAA tournament. Softball and Baseball season are fast approaching and we ask you to get out and support your home teams. SPRING IS HERE! Though the weather is mighty iffy in early Spring, it gives us a few days here and there to get out and do things. Justin tells a story of taking a little trip to the Sagg Hollow Golf Course to play 9 holes one evening. As he reached the 9th he heard screaming from a pond down over an embankment. It was a good thing he was there, for he helped a taller, older gentleman up out of the water. Jason, Amy, and some of their crew took a walk in the woods on one of the nice warm days. Amy discovered some Turkey Tail Mushrooms, however they had dried out and were no longer usable. We encourage you to get out, get some Vitamin D (sunshine), learn something new, and take a break from being in the house. The Winter Blues are hard to Shake but a little Sunshine is all it takes! With a quick look back at 1942, and some history of early McKee Kentucky. This episode kicks off the new format that has been laid out to give you all a better and more informed listening experience. Justin and Jason speak a little on Mr. George Felty and some of the memories of him. George was a great person and always dressed sharp when he went to town. At one time he was sheriff and part owner in the Sand Gap Theater. George Candee was a very interesting character who had part in the founding of McKee. It was an article covered in the episode that was written by Jess D. Wilson and provided to us by The Jackson County Sun www.jacksonsunky.com In the 1864 election President Abraham Lincoln got every vote in Jackson County, Kentucky except 10. Healthy Habits- Justin has started using shilajit and Baha Gold sea & mineral salt, with great results so far. Jason and Amy tried mullein tea and are firm believers in the benefits of mullein. Props to Jory Bowling and Jennifer Cathcart for for all the all of the wonderful information that they share with the world. In the Appalachias this week-The good and bad of daylight savings time. Will they do away with it in Kentucky? Congratulations to the Owsley County Owls this week for taking it to Rupp Arena this week! The big topic covered this week is what the Daniel Boone National Forest has to offer, as well as The Heidelberg Locke and the Fitchburg Furnace, and a little on Morel mushrooms. With one living on the hill and the other living in the holler, Ben Parker and Jason have been friends since childhood. They share stories of riding mules and horses, rope burns, and wrestling with them. They go on to discuss the Pigg Cemetery (a historical cemetery in Jackson County) and some of the history of it. 3 brothers died of the same disease during the Civil War. The graves are all covered with massive stones. The conversation goes into several different subjects all leading into what Ben is doing now. Justin gives us a run down on his health routine. Being a self proclaimed “health and wellness nerd” Justin sits down with us to discuss a topic that is near and dear to his heart. He talks about his own health struggles in his life, what caused them, what he's doing and what you can do to help make your health a top priority. He explains the benefit of hydrogen water, grounding, breathe work, cold and heat immersion and gene testing to have you feeling a level of wellness that you might not have experienced before in your life. Remember folks, you're only as wealthy as you are healthy. The good Lord gave us these vessels to take care of, and it's our job to make sure that task is carried out. This is the interview as heard on the Dial and Deal show on WWAG 107.9fm. Artimus has had a full life in the music industry and shows no signs of quitting anytime soon! In the year of 1974 he was recommended by the legendary Charlie Daniels to the band Lynyrd Skynyrd to take the spot of the original drummer Bob Burns, due to health reasons. Artimus tells the story of his father being killed in a plane crash and after he signed the wrongful death papers on his dad, he put his last dollar in gas to go record the song Saturday Night Special. Many stories are shared in this episode and some were really emotional. The plane crash that took the lives of band members Ronnie Van Zant, Steve Gaines, Cassie Gaines, and road manager Dean Kilpatrick has had a big impact on the music scene since that day October 20, 1977. The latest project that Artimus is working on is titled Anthems: Honoring the music of Lynyrd Skynyrd it is a collaboration of the Artimus Pyle Band (A.P.B.) featuring several big name stars in the music industry. Dolly Parton, Sammy Hagar, Marty Raybon, Ronnie Dunn, and Jarrod Niemann, just to name a few! It has been put together with labor and love from the folks at Get Joe Records. Rob Williams, Papaw Paul, and Jason sit down for a conversation that is a true adventure through the history and life in Sand Gap, Kentucky. Though you can't tell it now in the 1940's Sand Gap was a booming town! With several mining companies and multiple coal temples, all businesses were doing really well back in the day. They talk about the Moore Holler~ it had electricity while most of Jackson County was still without. Some of the mines had tram systems to haul out coal and others used mules to pull their load. The miners worked long hard hours and got paid by the ton and not buy the hour. They also discuss life during the Great Depression, vigilantes with bundles of switches, horrific accidents due to the coal industry, Jim Bob throwing dogs in the fire, a few Bear tales and so much more. Rob began his career as a school teacher, retired as principal from Sand Gap Elementary, taught at Berea College, and now runs his own construction company. Being 58 years of age Rob is the guy with eleven lives. He has survived being shot, falls, and so many other things, but surviving everything he is a wealth of knowledge on local history and is glad to share his stories with anyone who will listen. The human race all too often relies on the conveniences of modern medicines. While better, more natural remedies are often right under our noses and some of them growing in our yards. Did you know, that the cambium layer of willow bark can work as a pain reliever can help with headaches? Did you know the dreaded dandelion is edible and is really good for heart health? With some research and hiking, you will find that Mother Nature has provided us with an almost full medicine cabinet. Cures/Remedies for upset stomach, headaches, allergies, things for the nervous system, topical solutions, and the list goes on and on. Our good friend and Medicine Man, Jory joins us again in this episode,to give us a lot of insight on things that nature has to offer in the way of medicines. We do strongly suggest that you do your own research, and are in no way responsible for any mistakes that you or any individual may make, while harvesting or preparing any wild grown food or medicine. With some studying and walks through nature, you will find that the Appalachian Mountains have everything needed for life. There's foods and medicines growing in the wild. Fresh clean water. Timber for shelter. Coal and wood for fire. Fresh clean air and so much more. We thank God for nature's bounty and the lessons we learn through life! The week of January has been a cold one here in Eastern Kentucky! We have had temperatures as low as -7, snow, and wind that would chill you to the bone. As with any other time of year we have still went to work to provide for the family. The roads have been slick but thankfully we have made it safely back and forth. Jason speaks on survival and talked a little bit about the Donner party, who had a horrific experience because they weren't prepared. Caught in a blizzard on their trek across America, they ate their mules, the family dog, and some of them even turned to cannibalism. Appalachians have been known for survival from the early settlers right up till now. This episode was short due to weather but we will be back in full swing next week. Mules- The mule, a hybrid animal, being a cross between a horse and donkey, was the backbone of civilization for centuries. Pulling traits and physical characteristics from each parent, the mule was made for work. They are a sure footed animal, that are good on the trails, and are really strong, which made them good in the fields, pulling plows and tilling land. In the early days of America they were used to pull wagon trains, logging, pack animals, mining coal, borax, salt and almost any job when power was needed. They were used in times of war as well, pulling cannons and artillery to battle, and I am certain they were used in the calvary as well. In those days a mule was a very treasured animal,a key element in survival. If folks couldn't plant enough food they would starve. They had to use them to pull the logs to build homes, and other structures. The mule was also used to move freight from place to place and make things more available to people in remote areas. Mules in the Bible- In biblical times the mule first appears In the book of Genesis 36:24 When Anah found the mule. Then in the book of 2 Samuel 18:9 Absalom, David's son, got hung in the oak tree riding his mule. King David and all of his sons rode mules. I'm not doing a complete bible study here, but I strongly suggest you open the Good Book, and study it for yourself. Washington's mules- George Washington raised mules at his home at Mt.Vernon. Spain's Charles III sent Washington two jacks as a gift but only one of them survived the trip across the Atlantic ocean. Washington ordered his overseer of Mt. Vernon, John Fairfax to bring the jack named ‘Royal Gift' from Boston, home to Virginia.Washington eager to populate the south with mules, charged a service fee of five guineas per mare. Royal Gift lived at Mt.Vernon from 1785-1793. His death resulted from a bad handler who had driven him too hard and left him lame. He did however sire a son named Compound to carry on his legacy. Fifteen years after receiving, Royal Gift from Spain, Washington had a herd of sixty mules at the Mt. Vernon plantation that were used to plow the fields and pull wagons. 40 acres and a mule- 40 acres and a mule was part of Special Field Orders no. 15, in the year of 1865 The government promised forty acres and a mule to the freed slave families, and as the government often does, it didn't deliver on its promise. The forty acres and the mule could've provided a substantial living for those families in my opinion. Mules in 21st century- Though used for centuries and treasured by many the need for a mule faded when the Industrial Revolution came, and brought the tractor. In today's world, very few people use the mule to tend crops, but there are some enthusiasts who still treasure and raise mules. Choice horse shows still have classes dedicated to mules and there are a few mule/donkey shows that are still in operation. We thank God for all of his amazing animals!
