It's all about Michigan wine this week on Behind the Mitten, and we are awash in the great grape harvest of 2024. Our first guest is in charge of one of the Midwest's biggest, and arguably most exciting, food festival. The 17th Annual Grand Rapids International Wine, Beer & Food Festival kicks off November 21 through the 23rd. It's a full on extravaganza of food and food related events and presenations at DeVos Place throughout the weekend. Dawn Baker from Show Span joins us and shares all the new things that you'll find this year, including The Vineyard where you can sample over 1000 wines. Beer City Station with over twenty different brewies pouring their liquids, and the Barrel Room where you can try liquors and cocktails. There are mulitple food and drink pairing options, and culinary demonstrations throughout. This is really a fun festival, it is really huge, and it really shouldn't be missed. Then we catch up with Fenn Valley Vice President Brian Lesperance, who shares a little bit about the excellent grape harvest that Michigan experienced this fall. All that lovely sunny weather that we had put our wines on the road to greatness this year, and Fenn Valley is ready. Look for new releases happening throughout the year, and the next few years as they age to perfection. Sip 'n Shop is happening on December 14 2024, where you can, wander the aisles of artisan crafts while enjoying a glass or two. Right after the holiday season look forward to the chili-cook-off at the vineyard which will feature four cook-off categories: Four Legs (beef and pork), Two Legs (Fowl), Vegetarian (non-meat), and Exotic (Seafood or wild game, including venison). Registration will open for the cook-off on December 1st, 2024.Then the ladies stop by from Shady Lane Cellars. Maddie McCandless, assistant winemaker and Kasey Wierzba, Executive Winemaker and General Manager also share a harvest report from the vineyard, which is located in Suttons Bay. Kasey has been at the vineyard since 2013, and brings years of experience in California to the vineyard. Maddie graduated from Purdue in 2019, got a degree in enology in 2021 and worked at Ram's Gate Winery before finding her home in Northern Michigan. This presentation examines the 2023 alliance between Leidos, the international high-tech engineering firm, and NASCAR to build a “Next Gen” Lunar Roving Vehicle (LRV). The paper looks at the adaptation of motorsports culture by the aerospace industry as space exploration grows more privatized and commercialized. Additionally, the presentation looks at the history of NASA's LRV program and how astronauts saw their rovers through the context of automobile racing. Both Leidos Dynetics and NASCAR are relying on particular language, imagery, and historic legacies to justify their partnership while trying to earn NASA's new LRV contract. Dr. Mark D. Howell has been involved with motosports his entire life. As a teenager, he tagged along with the NASCAR Modified pit crew of Brett Bodine, who raced out of Howell's hometown of Dallas, PA. He earned a BA and MA from Penn State, and a Ph.D. in American Culture Studies from Bowling Green State University. His dissertation evolved into From Moonshine to Madison Avenue: A Cultural History of the NASCAR Winston Cup Series, published by The Popular Press/University of Wisconsin Press in 1997. Howell is professor of communications at Northwestern Michigan College in Traverse City. He lives with his wife and son (and two dogs) in the village of Suttons Bay on Lake Michigan. Chris attended two virtual events: Robert Darnton's talk at the Boston Athenaeum about his new book, THE REVOLUTIONARY TEMPER: PARIS, 1748-1790, and Alan B. Farmer's lecture on “Lost Books: The Dark Matter of the Early Modern English Book Trade” at the Harry Ransom Center. On today's episode of the Laser Light Show we sit down with Dr. Rachel Starr. Dr. Starr graduated from Michigan State University in 2000 and has been a part of the Suttons Bay and Elk Rapids Animal Hospitals since September 2005. She enjoys relieving pain and discomfort of an animal and helping restore the family relationship with the pet. Dr. Starr is particularly interested in Veterinary Orthopedic Manipulation (VOM), laser therapy and nutrition. At home, she has an English Creme Retriever named Esca, and a horse named Mickey. Gardening, horseback riding, and volunteering at the school are activities Dr. Starr enjoys outside of work. She also likes to spend time with her husband Jay and three children, Abraham, Jonah and Ari.

We both recently headed to the Midwest for some family & friend time. Chris went to Chicago and met up with Colleen, our guest on Episodes 27 and 145. We had a browse in Women & Children First, a legendary feminist bookstore and one of Chicago's oldest indies, after which we had lunch across the street at Lady Gregory's, an Irish pub named after the legendary Irish dramatist. Chris also got to visit one of her favorite used bookstores, Frugal Muse in Darien, IL, where she found two copies of THE RED GARDEN by Alice Hoffman (it's a book on our Scarlet Summer Bingo! Card). Emily headed to Michigan to celebrate her daughter's birthday and gifted her a Little Free Library! They went on a Biblio Adventure together to Blue Vase Book Exchange in Interlochen, MI, a used bookstore with a computer inventory database (so convenient!). Emily also got to visit Bay Books in Suttons Bay, MI where she discovered the books of Viola Shipman, a local author. Shipman is actually the pen name of Wade Rouse whose grandma inspired his writing so he writes under her name. What an amazing way to honor her. We also finished a few books. Chris feels quite accomplished for having finished ULYSSES by James Joyce. Phew! As she says in the episode, it is everything that everyone has ever said it is. Emily read THE RED GARDEN by Alice Hoffman, a collection of related stories that contain a few “Easter Eggs” that'll show up in her forthcoming novel, THE INVISIBLE HOUR, which comes out in August. She also read THE BETTER HALF by Alli Frank and Asha Youmans, who will be our guests on Episode 186. As for upcoming reads and Biblio Adventures, we'll both be reading THE SCARLET LETTER by Nathaniel Hawthorne this week and are looking forward to our Biblio Adventure to Concord, MA. Valdez posted his 24th straight quality start, tying Jacob DeGrom in 2018 for the longest single-season streak. He gave up six hits and struck out eight with one walk. The Tigers were shut out for the second day in a row and club-record 21st time this season, tying them with the 1973 New York Yankees and 1976 Chicago White Sox for most by a team with a designated hitter. Jeremy Pena had three hits for the Astros and scored twice. Cubs 5, Mets 2 – Cubs hound Bassitt, beat NL East-leading Mets 5-2 Chris Bassitt had his shortest start in three months, failing to get through the fourth inning as the NL East-leading New York Mets lost to the Chicago Cubs 5-2. Tennis – Carlos Alcaraz: 19, US Open champ, No. 1, unique Carlos Alcaraz is the U.S. Open champion and the No. 1-ranked player in men’s tennis at age 19. And he is exhausted. He tells The Associated Press on Monday that he is not quite sure how he managed to play and win so many tough and long matches in a row to earn his first Grand Slam title. He also says he considers himself a unique player who can hit a lot of different shots and never gives up on a ball. He grew up admiring Rafael Nadal and Roger Federer but is not interested in comparing himself to either. NBA – Wolves reprimand Edwards for homophobic social media remark The Minnesota Timberwolves have reprimanded star guard Anthony Edwards for homophobic comments he made on an Instagram video and later apologized for. Timberwolves president of basketball operations Tim Connelly says the team is “disappointed in the language and actions” Edwards displayed in an Instagram video. Edwards made a disparaging, profane comment about a group of men on a sidewalk he recorded from a vehicle he was inside. Edwards deleted the post and apologized for his remark. Nikola Jokic, Kevin Durant, Rajon Rondo and Kobe Bryant are among players who’ve been disciplined by the NBA in the past for anti-gay language. Soccer – US Soccer investigation into NWSL misconduct nearing end U.S. Soccer says an investigation into alleged abuse and misconduct in the National Women’s Soccer League is expected to be completed by early October. The investigation led by former acting U.S. Attorney General Sally Yates was initiated last fall after North Carolina Courage coach Paul Riley was accused of sexual harassment and coercion by two former players. Riley was fired and league Commissioner Lisa Baird stepped down in the wake of the players’ claims. U.S. Soccer and the NWSL and its players union announced separate investigations. Boston Marathon – Boston Marathon to welcome nonbinary athletes to 2023 race Nonbinary athletes will be able to run in next year’s Boston Marathon without having to register as members of the men’s or women’s divisions. Race organizers announced the change on Monday as registration opened for the 127th running of the prestigious race next April 17. The Boston Athletic Association says it’s been working to expand opportunities for nonbinary people — not just for the marathon but for the BAA’s other events. It says nonbinary athletes can submit entry applications if they’ve completed a marathon as a nonbinary participant during the current qualifying window. Races around the U.S. increasingly are adding nonbinary divisions and offering equal prize money. NASCAR – Hamlin chasing NASCAR driver’s title, owner’s championship Denny Hamlin the driver finds himself in the most enviable of positions heading into Saturday night’s race at Bristol. His second-place run at Kansas Speedway over the weekend nearly ensured his spot in the next round of the playoffs. Denny Hamlin the owner? He’s feeling even better. The car he was chasing down in the waning laps of Sunday’s race happened to be the No. 45 driven by Bubba Wallace for 23XI Racing, which is owned by Hamlin and Hall of Fame basketball star Michael Jordan. The victory pushed the team into the next round in the race for the lesser-known owner’s championship.
