Thom Francis introduces us to poet Don Maurer who shared his work at the Poetic License Poetry Reading & Open Mic at the Fish Market in Troy on November 13, 2023. That night Don read his poem “Unnatural Acts,” that inspired a painting by Phil Palmieri in the exhibit. He also read “Nauset Beach, Cape Cod, 1840” and “Long Johns on the Line,” a poem on the changing seasons. Poetic License is a joint project of the Hudson Valley Writers Guild and Upstate Artists Guild that brings together regional poets and visual artists. For 2023, the exhibit was on display at the Fish Market in Troy and the Honest Weight Food Co-op in Albany. +++ Poetic License 2025 is almost here and the HVWG and UAG are very excited to welcome everyone to this year's exhibit featuring almost 40 pieces of art inspired by over 20 poems. This year we are heading back to the Fish Market in Troy with four events taking place throughout September including collage workshops, a poetry reading, and special reception during Troy Night Out. On Tuesday, September 30, the work will move across the river to the Honest Weight Food Coop for the months of October and November where we will have even more opportunities to view the art and take part in community events. For more information on the Poetic License project, see the artwork, and to read the poems that inspired it, go to https://www.poeticlicensealbany.com/
Brian pops in to help review the newest Hallmark Channel movie, Catch of the Day. ABOUT CATCH OF THE DAY:On the eve of becoming a NY executive chef, Sophie returns home to help her family's flailing restaurant and runs into Cam, an old crush who makes her question everything.AIR DATE & NETWORK FOR CATCH OF THE DAY::August 30, 2025 | Hallmark ChannelCAST & CREW OF CATCH OF THE DAY::Emilie Ullerup as SophieMichael Rady as CamKatie Lee Biegel as AbigailBRAN'S CATCH OF THE DAY SYNOPSIS:We're in a fancy kitchen. “Yes, Chef!” The head chef is anxiously waiting for a big review to drop. Sophie chimes in and says it doesn't matter what The Times thinks. Nice thought, but no one's buying it.Cut to fisherman Cam, who runs Easton's Fish Market. He's short-staffed but making it work. The review comes in — four stars! Sophie is promoted to sous-chef.She calls her sister to share the big news, but things aren't great back home. Their family restaurant is bleeding money, and her sister is ready to sell. Sophie says she'll think about it. Abigail suggests she come back, help out, and stick around for the 4th of July.Sophie asks for time off. It doesn't go well. She's never asked before, but three weeks turns into just ten days. When she arrives, she's horrified to find… frozen fish! She heads to the docks for fresh fish, promptly falls into a net, and gets rescued by Cam. Surprise — they already know each other. They even kissed back in 7th grade. Banter sparks, and Sophie goes on her way.Back at the restaurant, tensions rise between the sisters. Abigail's been grinding to keep the place alive, and Sophie swoops in buying pricey fish like that's the magic fix.Meanwhile, Sophie keeps crossing paths with Cam. A local blogger spreads the word that a big-city chef is back in town, which makes Sophie's boss furious. The sisters start interviewing potential managers. One guy is a perfect fit — but before he can commit, Cam (unknowingly) offers him a better-paying job. Perfect Cam means no harm, but Sophie's frustrated.Later, she apologizes, and sparks fly. They finally kiss. The next day, she cooks him dinner, sharing her dreams. Her boss wants her to cook for someone opening a restaurant in Vegas — a chance that could change her career. When Sophie leans in for another kiss, Cam pulls back. He doesn't want to stand in the way of her dreams. The Vegas dinner starts rocky, but Sophie nails it. She's offered the head chef role.Just as she's ready to rush out of town, she can't find Cam — until she learns he's been secretly framing her old photos. What a guy. They say their goodbyes. But when Sophie's about to board the helicopter, she can't go through with it. She quits. She chooses to stay, help run the now-thriving family restaurant, and, of course, be with Cam.She tells her family, finds Cam, and they seal it with some very good kisses.

Farmers need more money - so says the National Farmers' Union which says the incoming Government should increase the agriculture budget. Over the next few weeks as well as hearing from politicians about what they propose for farming, the environment and rural communities, we're also going to hear from rural and wildlife groups about what they think incoming MPs should be focusing on. Starting with the NFU which launched its manifesto at the end of last year. Fishermen in Looe say the closure of the Plymouth Fish Market is a disaster for their industry. Now the day catch has to be sent around 30 miles further, to Brixham Harbour for auction. The Looe Harbour Commissioners are trying to help the fishermen by transporting the fish to Brixham. Our topic for the week is vets. While they'll still be involved in a emergency, the role of a farm vet has changed a lot over the years. They now work with farmers on whole herd health. But that doesn't make the job any easier and as we'll hear this week recruiting vets in rural areas can be a challenge.Presented by Charlotte Smith and produced by Beatrice Fenton.

This week's Happy Half Hour takes place from one of the best perches in all of San Diego: Top of the Market. It's a fully windowed and partially outdoor restaurant, separate and with a more fine dining or special occasion bent than its counterpart downstairs, the equally beloved and lauded Fish Market. To our front is sprawling views of Coronado and the bay. Directly to the right, the Midway, and to the left, a bunch of hotels, docks, and the Coronado Bridge. We sat down with Top of the Market's executive chef, Robin James, who is, in my opinion, the most San Diego San Diegan to ever do it. His first cooking job was on the line at the iconic Anthony's Fish Grotto. After that, he got his cooking degree at the Art Institute and became the executive chef at The University Club and Bali Hai. These days, he's slinging creative seafood dishes at Top of the Market. But what makes him deeply San Diego, despite his life resume and of course being born here, is that his parents met while working at Jack-in-the-box. Come on. He's a living local legend, and we get the story of his parents' meet-cute in the episode. In addition to his hometown bonafides, James is a serious cook with an Escoffier tattoo, who is consistently trying to take things to the next level. He said he was always a tinkerer, experimenting with ingredients, often ones that don't seem to make much sense together, to see what happens. He said he did a lot of that during Covid, while temporarily laid off from work, itching to create, and now he's stretching his wings more with his seafood menu. One of his more surprising dishes on Top of the Market's current list are seared sea scallops with Spanish chorizo, dehydrated mushrooms, and big white beans. Scallops, mushrooms, and beans isn't a dish I knew I wanted, but now I can't stop thinking about it. James is also cooking an Alaskan halibut on the menu with many green, spring flavors, and served with a punchy tzatziki heavy on the cucumber; he also has a seared octopus served over hummus with pickled red onions and mandolined radishes. There are crudos, and on the opposite end of the spectrum, there's a chocolate cake a-la Elvis, with bananas, bacon and honey. James assured us there are plenty of classics on the menu, too, like Top of the Market's famed cioppino, a hearty fish stew the restaurant has been serving for decades. There's good drinking at Top of the Market, too, James assures us, and the wine list is evidence of that. James and his team have been running thrice yearly wine dinners with top California producers—the next is in September, with Grgich Hills. In the meantime, they also have one of San Diego's best wine steals: a list of 30 bottles of wine for $30, every Tuesday. We're not talking two buck chuck or plonk; this is from the real wine list, made specially available for those extra fun people who want to clink glasses on a Tuesday. We also talked the news in this episode: Baja came up big in the reveal of Michelin's first guide to Mexico. The French tire company gave one star to Animalon (Javier Plascencia and Oscar Torres), Damiana (Esteban Lluis), and Conchas de Piedra (Drew Deckman and Hugo D'Acosta). Many other Baja California restaurants were recommended or named bib gourmands. Taste of Little Italy will be returning on June 18 and 19, 2024 with over 40 restaurants. And OB's Gianni Buomono Vintners is moving away from its long-held Newport Ave. spot. It'll be opening near Sports Arena soon.
With so many teams aiming for a Wild Card spot, Miami should find themselves as big time trade partners. But what does that say about the future of the Marlins?Episode NotesThere are terrific teams so far and there are bad teams so far... and about 20 teams in the middle. (1:06) When a wedding gift evolves into a lifelong passion, it's a story worth uncorking. Join us as we raise a glass with Catherine Montest, who takes us on a spirited journey from receiving her first bottle of fine wine to diving deep into wine clubs and vintner adventures. Her insights remind us that, like a fine wine, relationships and palates mature beautifully over time. Our conversation isn't just about the bouquet of a good Bordeaux; it's a toast to the connections we cherish and the moments we share.(7:48) On a different note, we're squeezing in some melodious charm with Kevin Solecki, Pittsburgh's own accordion virtuoso, who brings his tunes and tales to our ears. Kevin's fingers dance over the keys, telling a story of tradition and triumph, from his performances at Wholey's Fish Market to his thriving Carnegie Accordion Company. (13:44) And if your taste buds are tingling for more local flavor, Abby O'Connell is your guide to the culinary landscape of Spirits and Tales, from divine brunches to dinners that dazzle against Pittsburgh's Oakland skyline. Plus a party sandwich recipe that will have locals drooling. Don't just listen—become part of the narrative by sharing your own recipes and revel in the rich flavors of our region.Send us a Text Message.Support the Show.

Historically Thinking: Conversations about historical knowledge and how we achieve it
From its opening in 1822, the Fulton Market was an essential part of life in old New York, selling vegetables grown on Long Island, fruit harvested in Cuba, lobsters taken from the waters of Maine, chickens raised in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania, and oysters–and fish–hauled forth from New York harbor itself. Over the decades Fulton Market became known as Fulton Fish Market, dominated by wholesale dealers in fish that came not only from New York Harbor, but from all over the world. What Chicago became for beef, New York became for fish. “A business that specializes in fish,” writes my guest Jonathan Rees, “has to regularize an inevitably uneven supply through a mixture of knowledge and technology.” Rees's book The Fulton Fish Market: A History is therefore not simply the story of the creation, life, and decline of a New York place, but a description of that place where community, politics, economy, nature, and culture all came together on the New York waterfront. Jonathan Rees is Professor of History at Colorado State University-Pueblo. This is his third appearance on the podcast; he was last on in episode 222 to describe the strange career of Harvey Wiley. For Further Information Previous conversations with Jonathan were about refrigeration, and the purity and nutritional value of mass-produced food. It doesn't take too much of a guess to figure out why he's now writing about fish markets. Jonathan Rees and I talked briefly about Joseph Mitchell, a legendary New Yorker columnist not least because he eventually had a case of writer's block so massive that it transcended the metaphor "block". Here is Mitchell's book Up in the Old Hotel, in which the Fulton Fish Market is essentially a supporting character, if not primary character, and more on those thirty years without writing.

With his father's mentorship and determination, he began shaping his own path within the culinary world. Vic's journey took a pivotal turn when he ventured into television with his show "Eat Drink Italy with Vic Rallo." He took a unique approach by filming the show entirely in Italy, showcasing not only the delicious cuisine but also the wine, architecture, culture, and history that make Italy so captivating. The show's success helped him build his personal brand and further establish his reputation in the industry.
