Interview by Kris PetersAFI are coming!Formed in 1991 by California high school students Davey Havok (vocals) and Adam Carson (drums, backing vocals), AFI (short for A Fire Inside) began as a hardcore act. After gaining traction in the Bay Area scene and releasing their 1995 debut, Answer That and Stay Fashionable, the band signed to Nitro Records—the legendary incubator for some of punk's biggest names. In the ensuing years, AFI built a steady following through releases like 1997's Shut Your Mouth and Open Your Eyes and 1998's A Fire Inside EP, while they cemented their long-running line-up with the addition of bassist Hunter Burgan in 1997 and, finally, guitarist Jade Puget in 1998.With the release of their fourth studio album, 1999's Black Sails in the Sunset, AFI moved in a new direction, expanding beyond their hardcore roots and venturing into increasingly melodic territory—incorporating elements of gothic rock, horror punk, and even reflective balladry—creating a unique style that would soon make them international stars. In the years following, AFI found significant commercial success, breaking into the mainstream with Platinum-selling albums like 2003's Sing the Sorrow and 2006's Decemberunderground, which topped the Billboard 200. Along the way, the band scored a variety of hit singles, including Girl's Not Grey, Love Like Winter, Medicate, and Miss Murder, which landed atop Billboard's Alternative chart in 2006.Today, with 11 studio albums, 10 EPs, four MTV Video Music Awards, and one GRAMMY® nomination to their name, AFI shows no signs of slowing down, much to the delight of their multi-generational, global fanbase.HEAVY had the pleasure of speaking with drummer ADAM CARSON ahead of the tour. AFI are coming to Australia supporting GREEN DAY with select headline sideshows as well. Musician and filmmaker Dimitri Coats — guitarist for the punk supergroup OFF! and frontman for Burning Brides — joins host Aaron Sagers to discuss his punk rock sci-fi comedy feature film Free LSD, which he wrote, directed and stars in, as well as his own paradigm shifting experience with potential extraterrestrials. Receiving comparisons to Repo Man, Free LSD also stars OFF! singer Keith Morris (from the bands Black Flag and Circle Jerks) in the lead role, and other musicians David Yow (The Jesus Lizard) Autry Fulbright (And You Will Know Us By The Trail of Dead), DH Peligro (Dead Kennedys), as well as Jack Black, Dana Gould, Chelsea Debo, Chloe Dykstra, James Duval, Barry Del Sherman, Chris D., E.R. Ruiz, Gill Gayle, Davey Havok, and S.A. Griffin. MORE ABOUT FREE LSD Keith, an elderly sex shop owner, falls for a younger woman who visits his store looking for a gift. When their relationship turns physical, Keith's failure to perform leads him to a strange erectile dysfunction doctor who offers hope in the form of an experimental drug. The experience gives Keith much more than renewed manhood. It also provides a glimpse into a parallel universe where he is not only the singer of the band OFF!, but also the target of an advanced AI species that will stop at nothing to prevent the group from making a new album, which holds the key to an awakening of human consciousness. _______________________________________________________________ Talking Strange Paranormal Show with Aaron Sagers is a weekly paranormal pop culture podcast featuring celebrity and author interviews, as well as learned experts in all things strange and unexplained. In this episode of Tuna On Toast, Stryker sits down with David Beno Benveniste, CEO of Velvet Hammer Music and Management Group. Beno is the man who signed System of a Down, and he reveals how he discovered the band and what it was like working with Rick Rubin on their albums. Beno's other clients include Avenged Sevenfold, Korn, AFI, Alice in Chains and Deftones. He told Stryker about Davey Havok's greatness, what makes Jerry Cantrell such a great musician, how Jonathan Davis strives for success and why he wanted to work with M Shadows and the A7X guys long before he ever signed them. Beno also shares advice for bands starting out today, as well as the concept of artists as “brands” that can build relationships with fans over years. Velvet Hammer also co-created the Sick New World festival. Beno reveals how that event came together and what the future holds for it. Hey Listener, put on a black t-shirt and ask your mom if you can listen to this podcast while she drives you to the show because today we're talking with stand up comedian Giles Chickering from Hambone and the Guy/Zorse Industries about punk, emo, and metalcore from the early to mid 2000s. It's an interesting conversation as we talk about being 10 years apart in age and how that affected the way we discovered bands, what bands we liked from the same time period, and where we don't overlap musically. Topics this week include: The Adventures of Hambone and The Guy. The Fast and the Furious franchise is Giles' Star Wars. Shout out to Uncle Norm for those Beavis and Butthead VHS tapes. The internet, a Blackberry, a girlfriend, a driver's license, and a car aka the entire world has changed. FUSE: shaping a teenage boy's musical tastes. “My mom has seen Underoath 4 times”. Manually inputting album tracks to your desktop computer. An unplanned dive into Pauly Shore films. Warped Tours of yore. Giles is worried about how socially irresponsible $uicide Boy$ are for the youth of America. Viewing the Black Parade as a boy and as a man. Ticketmaster is pure evil and you're going to pay for it. The band that opened for Idles sucks (Injury Reserve). Being the old guy in the back of the room in a BANE hoodie. How have the Red Hot Chili Peppers not been canceled? Blink 182 and bands that are adjacent. We love concept albums. Standing at the barrier for Puddle of Mud in 2022. Davey Havok's sexuality and getting his arms blacked out. Thursday, an introduction to Post-Hardcore. Giles Hearts Haley. Forever Taking Back Sunday. Not old and white trash enough for Hatebreed. Every Time I Die: The best at being a band until they weren't. If a concert looks like a prison riot, then it's a good band. Tricked by Christians. Coping with the pandemic via nostalgia. The era of cookie cutter venues. Riot Fest was made for Giles and fat guys in the Midwest that wear black t-shirts and drink beer (me).
I Don't Wanna Hear It Podcast195 - Ghoulie Ghoulie Ghoul, Where Are You?: An I Don't Wanna Hear It Halloween SpecialThis Halloween, Jerry Lonely and the rest of the gang have a mystery to solve.
On this Call Your Ghoulfriend edition of Slashers, Micah exposes himself within mere moments and we are not talking about his tender love organ… The film this week? The 2007 cult classic, Trick 'r Treat, by writer/ director, Michael Dougherty. We could mention that the film was also produced by Bryan Singer, but we don't want to draw the wrong audience to this lovely little episode… But on the topic of the much-maligned X-Men director, this film features Anna Paquin, who played Rogue in like 20 things, Brian Cox from X2, and Dylan Baker from Spider-Man. You might remember the latter played Curt Connors (aka “The Lizard”) before Rhys Ifans. If you want a good horror comic, that MF murders his own son– it was gnarly. Back to Trick 'r Treat, some call it an anthology, while others a nonlinear narrative. I wonder if these turds mention Season's Greetings on this episode. Y'know, the animated short that gave birth to Sam and a bunch of candy-corn-flavored placenta? Also, did you know that Sam is short for Samhain? Must be a big Davey Havok fan… *badumtiss* The film is a clear love letter to horror creators like John Carpenter, Mary Lambert, Brian De Palma, and tons of other who are not worth the metadata to type, but trust us, they are legit AF. Since Jake is writing this description from the shadows, he will mention that there is a comic adaptation as well, written by Marc Andreyko and illustrated by Mike Huddleston Grant Bond, Christopher Gugliotti (who also did The Texas Chainsaw Massacre), and Fiona Staples. Punk Goes Pod is back, and this week they're discussing "When We Were Young" by Adele, as covered by Andy Black for Punk Goes Pop 7. Discussions also surface around the topics of weaponised nostalgia, Satanic musicals, and Sam makes a plea to Davey Havok.
In this episode, Ted Stryker welcomes Davey Havok to the Tuna On Toast studio to celebrate life and 30 years of AFI! For this episode, it's the Avocado on Toast studio :) Stryker and Davey cover so much ground, from AFI, Blaqk Audio and Dreamcar, to funny late night Hollywood stories and a ton more! Davey tells Stryker how he injured his throat during quarantine, what the diagnosis eventually was, and how it's healed. The guys talk about the big New Years Eve Blaqk Audio Show coming up and Davey actually surprises Stryker with his answer to the question about Blaqk Audio rehearsals (or lack thereof). He explains how he and Jade Puget get ready for their BA shows. Davey tells Stryker a great story of his Katy Perry encounter including a situation that went down at her show when Davey was rocking a beautiful raspberry red Marc Jacobs suit. Davey then explains to Stryker why he constantly creates, where that passion comes from, and what album he received for his 5th birthday. Davey discusses with Stryker growing up in Ukiah with guys like Adam Carson, Jade and Nic 13 and the life journey that took him there. Davey tells another great and funny story about the time he met Green Bay Packers quarterback Aaron Rodgers in Hawaii. Davey and Stryker talk about when AFI moved to Berkeley, and the first time playing 924 Gilman Street and jumping on stage to play a few songs during a Rancid show. Stryker and Davey then discuss early AFI albums and what the legendary concert booker Stormy Shepherd told Davey when he asked her to book AFI. Both Stryker and Davey attempt to recall a night many years ago in Hollywood that involved supermodel Alessandra Ambrosio and the very fun Chambers Brothers. Davey talks about meeting with and signing to a major label and what that experience was like. The guys chat about the All Hallow's EP, the Total Immortal video, The Art of Drowning, Sing the Sorrow and decemberunderground and what the avalanche of success was like. Davey and Stryker also chat about Dreamcar and the possibility of creating more music with Tony Kanal, Adrian Young and Tom Dumont. Davey reveals to Stryker his favorite AFI album and the guys talk about the upcoming AFI bodies tour. The new AFI merch (some designed by Skinhead Rob Aston) is fantastic, be on the lookout for the different releases to celebrate 30 years of AFI. So much ground was covered, the above text are just a few of the highlights of the interview. Davey is such a powerful and sweet man that has always stuck to his guns. He is a true artist and a great dude. Thank you so much for watching this episode of Tuna on Toast.....Avocado on Toast.

We had the pleasure of interviewing Hunter Burgan of AFI over Zoom video! AFI's unshakeable connection with their audience is a testament to the band's knack for reinvention, renewal, and exploration, anchored by an unblemished authenticity. AFI songs are embedded in the spiritual DNA of a legion of supporters, and these new songs are further demonstration of AFI's unwavering commitment to artistic exploration, a dark conjuration of an uncapturable muse. The band initially summoned a steady subcultural groundswell in the mid-90s, devoid of careerist ambitions. The band first made music as teenaged misfits in an obscure Northern California town, steadily assembling a dense catalog over the years marked by its diversity and authenticity. Davey Havok, Adam Carson, Hunter Burgan and Jade Puget keep their eyes fixed on the present and future, ensuring their position as a uniquely vibrant artistic force remains steadfast and strong.Like similarly artistically-minded iconic bands, AFI's ever-evolving identity has kept their sound, themes, and overall image fresh. A place in rock n' roll history assured by magical musical androgyny, both post-modern and timeless, AFI remains guided by the flames of authenticity and determination that defined their first ten albums and are sure to drive the next ten and beyond. Hello AFI fans, we're back! On March 15th, Blaqk Audio released a new album named Only Things We Love. Since we're a podcast devoted to discussing everything about the band AFI, we couldn't ignore this release created by AFI's Davey Havok and Jade Puget. We're sorry it's been a while since our last episode, but thanks for sticking with us and we're excited for AFI's future! You can click here to download the episode, or subscribe to our podcast on iTunes by clicking here. We hope you enjoy the episode!
Usually when bands release an album and the hype wears down, there's the long wait that follows before fans can finally get their hands on some new material, but every now and then an act can surprise us all with a small taste of what's to come in the form of a single or EP and that's what AFI have done with their new offering The Missing Man EP. The new collection of songs showcases what the band are truly capable of when they use their 27 years of experience together (20 for this week's guest co-host) and offer up five new songs that are unique, but still with that signature AFI tone. Guitarist Jade Puget joins Browny to talk about their decision to release an EP rather than waiting for a full-length album and his response really goes to show the band are certainly looking out for their fanbase (new and old). The pair also discusses Jade and frontman Davey Havok's straight-edge hardcore side project XTRMST and what the current state of that band is (if you didn't know about it, oh boy you're in for a treat when you hear the song we've got playing). Talking about New Music, there is plenty of it this week from Alpha Wolf, Justice For The Damned, Void of Vision and Emigrate, throwbacks from Angels & Airwaves, The Offspring and more... #WoSUATW #AFI #JadePuget #TheMissingMan #XTRMST #Punk #Rock #Hardcore #Sevendust #AlphaWolf #JusticeForTheDamned #VodOfVision #AngelsAndAirwaves #AvA #TomDelonge #Emigrate #Rammstein #BringMeTheHorizon #BMTH #LoFire #TheOffspring #Music Podcast #Podcast #AustralianBands #WallOfSoundAU

Here's a charming talk with Davey Havok and Jade Puget from AFI. We start in the present, with their strong 2017 effort "The Blood Album" and wind up going all the way back to 924 Gilman St., the heart of the East Bay punk scene, which also included bands like Jawbreaker and Green Day. In between, we discuss how Davey and Jade's healthy lifestyle (they're both straight edge; Davey is vegan) led to AFI's longevity. For information regarding your data privacy, visit acast.com/privacy

My quest alongside Jeff Cork to discuss all things relating to the band AFI have led us to this recent side-project from two members of AFI called XTRMST. As a straight-edge, hardcore experiment, XTRMST might give some AFI fans hope of listening to a screaming Davey Havok once again. On this episode of the podcast, Jeff Cork and I discuss our passionate thoughts on the success of XTRMST's debut, self-titled album. Be sure to let us know in the comments below what you'd like to see from our AFI podcast in the future, and thanks for listening! This week we have a very special episode: our unofficial Awful Band Spotlight on AFI. Devyn Trujillo (voted “most goth” by the AFI message boards) and Travis Duscay (voted “most frequent guest” by me) help turn what was supposed to be an episode on “Love Like Winter” into something much bigger. We discuss the band’s interesting career arc, from classic albums like Shut Your Mouth, All Hallow’s EP, and Black Sails in the Sunset to the random electronic elements of the homophobe trolling(?), “post-goth,” nu-wave anthem in question. We cover the many voices of Davey Havok, the Duchovny-esque lyrics on this track, and Devyn remembers knowing, even at 12, that the band’s credibility had been damaged by Sing The Sorrow. Also: insufferable AFI fans, making life-long friends on their message board, camping out overnight to see the band, Sing The Sorrow-era press releases, and Warped Tour stories from both sides of the railing. Good Music: Daughn Gibson’s “The Pisgee Nest,” All Human’s “And So Peter Dances,” and Frank Sinatra Jr.’s “Black Night.”
We're back with a new episode of the AFI-analysis podcast A Fire Inside Out! We've done the impossible, we've seen frontman Davey Havok in the flesh. Yesterday I dragged co-host Jeff Cork to see a Blaqk Audio at the Turf Club in the Twin Cities and then dragged him back into our recording studio to talk about the experience. On this week's episode, we're also joined by fellow concert-goer and AFI superfan Grant Bullemer. So what did Cork think of his first concert with Jade Puget and Davey Havok? How was the music? And just how much did he dance the night away? Check out the podcast to learn all about it! You can listen to the show below or you can subscribe and review the show on iTunes.

This week there are only two 'Cocks representing, lucky for it's the two Rob's! Now both Rob's are proud owners of both next gen systems. They talk about Don't Starve, Dead Rising 3, Killzone Shadow Fall and the great value of PlayStation Plus. While they wait for more great games to start coming out, they cover some news and offer opinions on Titanfall being 6v6, PlayStation Now and the topic of the week Steam Machine. Then for some reason they talk about their own separate dealings with Glenn Danzig aka Louis Syfer.
In a very special episode presented by 6131 Records (www.6131records.com), I sit down with the vocalist of AFI, Davey Havok, for an extended chat. We speak directly about theatre, being creative regardless of your circumstances and how he has handled criticism over the years. I have never heard Davey open up this much about various aspects of his life and I couldn't thank him enough for this opportunity.
