In this episode of the Intimate Marriage Podcast, Alexandra Stockwell, MD, interviews her husband, Rodd Stockwell, MD, and Victor Mangona, MD. Together with Victor's wife, Kate Mangona, MD, they have an honest and open discussion about how to support an ambitious wife. The men share the nuanced (and rarely articulated) experience of being married to a driven, ambitious, and growth-oriented woman–the challenges and the gratifications. Rodd and Victor share their thought processes, including initial skepticism and eventual support they've felt while navigating their wives' forays into personal growth and coaching. Ultimately it's been something that has had a profound and welcome impact on each of them and their relationships. The husbands are wonderfully frank in describing how they perceived their partners' personal growth journeys, and the consequent adjustments inspired within their marriages. This episode abounds with valuable insights on how to cultivate deeper emotional, sensual, and erotic intimacy with your spouse. Also in this episode: The transformational impact personal growth of one spouse can have on the other, and on the marriage as a whole. Importance of supporting each individual's passions and pursuits in service of a sustainable and fulfilling marriage. 2023 UPDATED TRAVEL TIPS Don't let photos fool you. Traveling with any amount of littles is stressful which is why I updated my Traveling with Littles Tips. Don't even mention that Cata did not even have a ticket 24 hours before the flight and executive decisions had to be made. TRAVELING WITH LITTLE TIPS 1. It is never about the destination. Always about the journey. I've found this to be deeply true. If we can enjoy the journey, the destination becomes wherever we are at all times. The destination never lasts forever, yet the journey is infinitely present. If we can imagine this, we can create it. 2. In the blink of an eye, emotions will fly. Notice how the face of the tiniest changes drastically from photo one to photo two. If we can accept this, chaos feels so much lighter. This is normal and expected. This is normal and expected. Repeat after me next time your toddler flings themselves on the ground, the other passenger gives you a look, or your preteen rolls their eyes. “This is normal and expected.” 3. Forgiveness & self-compassion are key. We may do things or say things we are not proud of while our littles are jumping out of their seats, touching the airport bathroom floors, and creating waterfalls of French fries and applesauce. The same goes for our spouse. As parents, we sometimes forget we are on the same team and experience fits of emotions while exchanging uncalculated words. This is normal. Accept it. Give yourself what you need in the moment. Forgive everyone. Move forward. 4. GIVE EVERYONE THE BENEFIT OF THE DOUBT! We never know what may have happened to them earlier that day or week. We do not know the hardships they carry nor the emotions they feel. If you can't do this, come talk to me. 5. Carry bags of skittles to hand out to all who help you along the way. The airline staff will love you. Friendships will be made.
Dating your spouse or having date nights with your significant other is a ubiquitous concept in our culture at this time. However, only a few people pull it off. Sometimes couples don't honor this commitment and don't make it a non-negotiable. Sometimes, even when people do it, they feel like it's a chore. But why is it important to have date nights with your partner? Dr. Kate Mangona, today's guest, will explain it to us in detail. Dr. Kate Mangona is a board-certified pediatric radiologist and a certified life and marriage coach under The Gottman Institute. Besides, she's a super mom and married to Dr. Victor Mangona. Together with her husband, they are a powerful couple in the physician community. These are some of the topics we cover during the episode: - Kate's experiences when having her first coaching session- Establishing date nights with your spouse- The most essential ability to have a successful relationship- Indicators that suggest a couple may need coaching - Aha-moments that couples experience when fixing their relationship- Suggestions for being more present with your partner and family- Decoding the concept of power coupleIn essence, letting go of the ego and thinking as a unit rather than individual pieces are two factors that every healthy couple embodies. Moreover, a help-first and forgive-first mindset is crucial in every connection. If you get your relationship right, the world opens up. For example, you can give more of yourself to your patients, kids, and other projects. You will come from strength and abundance. I hope you get a ton of valuable data from this episode. I know I certainly did. Until next time. Be phenomenal. “It doesn't matter if you argue or have fights. Like, all couples argue and have fights. What matters is if you can repair them.” - Dr. Kate MangonaIn This Episode: - Welcome back to another episode of the Limitless MD podcast- The reason Kate started to branch out beyond medicine- Kate's experiences when having her first coaching session - How did Kate find the time to engage in different projects? - Relevance of outsourcing chores in order to focus on what's vital- Establishing date nights with your spouse - The most essential ability to have a successful relationship - Indicators that suggest a couple may need coaching - Aha-moments that couples experience when fixing their relationship- Suggestions for being more present with your partner and family- Decoding the concept of power couple - Where to find Kate's podcast- Reflections about being in a committed relationship- Best ways to work with Kate Resources: - Join our Free community of high-performing physicians: the Physician Wealth Accelerator https://limitless-md.mn.co/- https://vikramraya.com/programs/ - Sign up to my email list - https://vikramraya.com/- Apply to work with Vik and book a clarity call here - https://bit.ly/3CXuigz- Group Coaching...

Show NotesToday is the 50th episode of "The Art of Medicine with Dr. Andrew Wilner." Many thanks to every listener and viewer, whether this is your first episode or their 50th! Thanks for your support!I'm so happy to share this special program with Kate Mangona, MD, who I daresay radiates enthusiasm and encouragement with every breath. Kate is a pediatric radiologist, Certified Life Coach, mother of 3 (all under five years old), married to a physician in private practice, and host of the podcast, "Medicine, marriage, and money." We discovered something unexpected in common during our chat before I pressed the record button—both of our spouses are from the Philippines!Kate describes herself as a "former perfectionist" and seems to have life all figured out. On today's show, I asked her how she does it. Kate explained her approach to balancing family, work as a pediatric radiologist, coaching, and, not the least important, taking care of herself. Just speaking with Kate made my day!Not to give it all away, but one of her secrets is not to try and be perfect at everything (except her medical work!). Her advice: "Think and share."Please listen to this 20-minute program and let me know what you think. If you would like to get in touch with Kate, you can find her on social media (@katemangonamd) and her website: https://www.medicinemarriageandmoney.com/.If you haven't already, please subscribe! Episode 87 - Today I'm going to do something a little different. I'm bringing you two of my most popular talks from the recent Marriage and Money, M.D. Summit. We had over 1300 people register for the conference, and the speakers did an absolutely phenomenal job! Today we ask, "Can you really have it all?"This first conversation is with Drs. Nii and Renée Darko. They met in medical school and married after a 10-year courtship. When they realized they were drowning in almost $700,000 of student loan debt and living paycheck to paycheck without much in savings and zero investments, they made a pact to pay off their student loan debt in 15 years. In only 3 short years, not only were they free of student loan debt, but during their debt payoff, they cash flowed several rounds of infertility treatments and quit their jobs to become entrepreneurs, starting 3 businesses. Our next speaker is Dr. Kate Mangona. She and her husband Victor, are active and passive real estate investors in over 3 thousand multifamily units and single-family rentals and they lead a Multifamily Masterclass course where they teach others how to passively invest in real estate to grow their wealth as they sleep. Kate hosts the Medicine, Marriage & Money podcast and leads the Medicine, Marriage, & Money Coaching Program where she helps married women physicians with children spend less time arguing with their spouse, and more time reigniting the sparks once felt during their honeymoon. Jennifer Kasten, MD, MSc, MSc is a practicing pediatric pathologist with degrees in medicine from the Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons, infectious disease epidemiology (CID) from the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine, a year’s postgraduate work in the mathematical modeling of infectious disease at Oxford University, and a master’s in the history of medicine and science, also from Oxford University. That’s a lot of school. Given her education, and pithy sense of humor, she created a Facebook page to clarify COVID-related issues, first for friends and family, and then some posts went viral and she has turned into a phenomenon. If you don’t follow her, you should. We recorded two episodes. The first was updates on COVID – what we’ve leaned in the 11 months since last we spoke. We discussed the new variants, and how this affects R naught, long-term sequelae, long hauler syndrome, and which countries handled the virus best and why. Somehow we even get into Federalism. If you like this episode, make sure to check out the next one where we discuss the vaccines. Also, I am now part of a network. The Doctor Podcast Network, where all of the podcasts cater to a physician audience. For instance, Dr. Kate Mangona has a podcast called Medicine Marriage and Money. Check it out! Please SHARE! In this episode, Lara talks with Dr. Kate Mangona who shares some of her best tips when it comes to medicine, marriage, and money. Dr. Mangona shares from her personal experiences as a physician, mom, and coach. "I grew up being very frugal with how I spent my money, but also just wanting to save it and not necessarily invest it. And what I've learned from that is saving is not a way to build wealth. It's not a way to build legacy. It's not a way to create this blanket of security for your family." -Dr. Kate Mangona
Simply Worth It: Physician Negotiations with Dr. Linda Street
We spend a lot of time on the specifics of our contracts, but today we're going to pivot and focus on the reason behind our negotiating efforts - the personal priorities that drive our decisions. In the negotiating process, we really have the opportunity to tweak our schedules so they work for us, our families and our spouses. Sometimes it feels like the job invades every part of our lives, and we end up with very little time to nurture our relationships. How do we make time for those relationships, and plan ahead for it in the negotiating phase? What are some of the side effects of being overwhelmed by all our responsibilities? In this episode, I'm joined by pediatric radiologist, relationship coach and host of Medicine, Marriage and Money, Kate Mangona. She shares how she prioritizes her marriage as a busy doctor, entrepreneur, mom and physician's wife. Three Things You'll Learn In This Episode Why attending physicians can negotiate for a healthier work-life balanceDuring training, our family takes a backseat to our careers. When we become attending physicians, we have more leverage. We can tweak our schedules to create more time to date our spouses, and spend time with our children. How to ease resentment in our relationships Stop keeping score of how often your spouse does certain tasks. Keeping score can be exhausting, and it can cause resentment and put a strain on the relationship. Remember that you're on the same team, there's no need to play offense and defense. The importance of prioritizing Everyone has unique things that matter most to them. What we do on a day-to-day, week-to-week basis has to reflect those priorities and this starts in the process of negotiating our contracts. It's easier to achieve balance when we lead with what we value. Guest Bio Kate is a pediatric radiologist, relationship coach and host of Medicine, Marriage and Money. One thing few outside of medicine realize are the unique challenges doctors face in their personal relationships. Marriage, especially to someone without a background in medicine, can be especially difficult due to the unique responsibilities and expectations placed on doctors for their jobs. In some ways, life isn't all that different for physicians trying to juggle work and home life except that work can be extremely chaotic and unpredictable. Unusual hours, call, and administrative work that can find its way into the home is stress that can strain any relationship if the couple isn't careful. Your Thoughts Are Key to Winning Marriage According to my guest, Dr. Kate Mangona of the Marriage, Medicine, & Money Podcast, the most important takeaway in her experience is realizing that the relationship will be exactly how you perceive it. This means that you need to understand your partner and recognize that they may be seeing a situation in a different way than you. You have to be empathetic to their viewpoint and also intentional about communicating with them to understand why they feel the way they do. Maybe you just need to ask them what they are feeling to period since guessing often leads to disagreements and hurt feelings. Don't Be Defensive Fundamentally, how you are feeling will shape your relationship. If you think someone is controlling then you will become defensive. In fact, being defensive is a perfectly normal and predictable reaction to many situations and conversations we have that have any element of disagreement. But we must try our best to understand our partner and their point of view because maybe they aren't being controlling but protective for some reason we don't know. A great example is someone who is upset every time we make a purchase and complains that we are wasting money. Perhaps they are just being cheap but maybe they were mentally keeping track of expenses so that the two of you could afford to go on a special surprise vacation. It is important to better understand the situation and partner rather than jump to becoming defensive. What Are the Stakes? All of these strategies are so important because we rely on each other for support through the unending stressors that accompany life. Whether it is at work, the children, or extended family, we will encounter challenges that are so much easier to handle with someone trusted at your side. Strong relationships take work and understanding but come with a lot of joy and fulfillment that make it worth while. Failure to be mindful of our personal relationships and marriages in medicine can lead to divorce, substance abuse, and even suicide as we have discussed previously on the show here and here.
