    Ivy Insights

The Modern Jewish Girl podcast is a truly relatable and inspiring podcast that I eagerly look forward to every week. Jenna, the host, shares messages of Jewish thought that are both short and sweet, yet incredibly rich with meaning. It's no wonder that this podcast has garnered a perfect 5-star rating from me.

One of the best aspects of The Modern Jewish Girl podcast is Jenna's ability to make complex Jewish concepts accessible to people of all backgrounds and levels of observance. She gets straight to the point in each episode, delivering insightful teachings without overwhelming the listener. Even as someone who is not religious, I find myself eagerly soaking up Jenna's words of wisdom and feeling inspired by her passion for Judaism. Her book, which chronicles her journey towards becoming more religious, is also highly recommended.

While there aren't many negative aspects about The Modern Jewish Girl podcast, one possible downside could be the brevity of each episode. Although they are light and airy in nature, some listeners might desire longer episodes that dive deeper into certain topics. However, given Jenna's straight-to-the-point style and the fact that her teachings are easily digestible in shorter snippets, this may not be a problem for most listeners.

In conclusion, The Modern Jewish Girl podcast is a gem that offers insight into Judaism and spirituality through Jenna's engaging storytelling and teachings. Whether you're already well-versed in Judaism or just curious about it, this podcast has something to offer everyone. I highly recommend giving it a listen and also checking out Jenna's book for an even deeper dive into her personal journey towards greater religious observance.

What is Chasidic Feminism? with Chava Green

I am very excited to present my conversation with Chava Green, a women's studies scholar and a Chassidic Jew. Chava's dissertation, “the Hasidic face of feminism," explores how the idea of feminism expresses itself in the Chabad community, both through the Rebbe's teachings and in the lives of Chabad women. In our conversation, Chava and I define feminism and discuss this seemingly paradoxical idea of a "Chasidic Feminist." We hear about her journey to becoming a Chasidic feminist, and dive a bit deeper into her research. We touch on some common struggles that many Jewish women face and how the Rebbe spoke to those challenges. We also speak about sheitels (wigs) and cleaning help, among other things-this is a must-listen! A bit more about Chava: Chava Green received her PhD in Religious Studies from Emory University in May 2024. She has a BA in Women's and Gender Studies from Rutgers University–New Brunswick. In between her undergraduate and graduate work, she lived in Israel for two years studying Judaism in Jerusalem and Tzfat (Safed).  Chava lives in Philadelphia with her husband and three children. This coming year she will be a visiting scholar at UPenn in the Jewish Studies department while also teaching classes in the Chabad girl's high school. Chava is passionate about bridging her academic work to the Jewish community and to a popular audience. Her writings can be found on TheJewishWoman.org. Key Takeaway: The Jewish people stood at Mt. Sinai like "one man with one heart." This is because we united in our ratzon (will) to receive the Torah for the greater good. (The heart is the place of free will, where our true inner will lies). This unity enabled us to receive the greatest blessing: the Torah. It is easier to unite and make peace with each other when we realize that we are all connected.
