On June 1st, 1948, Mary Virginia Carpenter stepped off Texas-Pacific train 31 in Denton and stepped into oblivion. “The world swallowed her up,” Texas Ranger Lewis Rigler later said of the 21-year-old's disappearance. There was little to no trace of Virginia, that much is true, and the likely suspect's involvement couldn't be proven or even clearly ascertained. As the years went on, however, that suspect, the person who is thought to have seen her last, became an even more likely one. Still, nothing solid against him could ever be found. Esta semana, Ariana Charrúa, microfonista del canal A24, decidió denunciar a un acosador. Gracias a la denuncia de Ariana, quien recibió agravios y agresiones en las redes sociales durante varios días y a pesar de eso mostró pruebas del acoso. Sofía Rigler, una maquilladora del mismo canal, reveló que este acosador le tocó la cola en dos oportunidades, pero que no se había animado a decir nada hasta ahora. Gracias a ellas, también Malena Dip, que trabajó con este acosador hace 8 años, reveló que fue víctima de situaciones similares y dio su testimonio: "Cuando tuve mi entrevista de trabajo fui con el currículum y me dijo que no hacía falta que leyera el CV, que me contrataba porque era linda", contó. Eso fue seguido de amenazas, abusos de poder y otras actitudes misóginas que terminaron con su renuncia. Pero eso no bastó. También Federica Guibelalde, ex locutora de La Batidora y El exprimidor, rompió el silencio y confesó, después de muchos años, que sufrió acosos y renunció porque no soportó más la situación, además de expresar su solidaridad con Ariana Charrúa y reconocer su la valentía. “Empecé a trabajar muy joven y recién recibida tuve que vivir mi propio tormento en el ámbito laboral porque las conductas machistas las asumíamos como normales", dijo. "El motivo de este pequeño testimonio es acompañar la lucha por los derechos de la mujer, hoy como madre de cuatro nenas", agregó. ¡Las pibas no nos callamos más! No aguantamos más, no nos hacemos más las boludas, no dejamos pasar más los abusos, acosos y violencias que sufrimos en la calle, en el trabajo, y en la propia casa, con la excusa de que son normales, inevitables...de que es lo que nos toca por tener cuerpos feminizados. Pero para eso, las pibas necesitamos más voz. Y los medios de comunicación aún sostienen lógicas patriarcales que nos obligan a tener lugares secundarios, menores, a cobrar menos, trabajar más, tener que renunciar por ser madres o sentir que algo nos falta para llegar a puestos de poder, como sí llegan nuestros compañeros varones. Lo sufrimos especialmente las más jóvenes. En los medios, las voces de varones superan ampliamente a las de mujeres, las discusiones sobre política o economía nos aparecen vedadas, o nos tenemos que resignar a dar el tiempo, la humedad, el tránsito… Según relevamientos internacionales realizados desde 1995 por la WACC: “Sólo el 24% de las noticias que circulan en tele, radio gráfica y redes sociales a nivel global tienen a mujeres como protagonistas. Además, cuando aparecemos, mayoritariamente lo hacemos como víctimas. No como especialistas de política, de economía”. Según un monitoreo reciente de Nos Quemaron Por Brujas, en las radios argentinas pueden pasar 50 minutos sin que se escuche la voz de una mujer. Y entre las 6 y las 10 de la mañana, en AM y FM se escuchan sobre todo voces de varones: el 69% por ciento de los programas son conducidos por hombres. Los estereotipos de género siguen vivos en los medios, que construyen y son parte de una desigualdad estructural que es política y es simbólica. Para cambiar esta situación, necesitamos más feministas en los medios, más perspectiva de género en los abordajes, más trabajo para periodistas mujeres… Las feministas tomamos los medios y nos metemos en donde nos mandaban a callar. Frente a los discursos que nos construyen como “fanáticas de los boliches”, “fiesteras” para desacreditar nuestras voces y para justificar nuestras muertes, decimos ya no más. Frente a los pactos entre machos que mantienen silenciadas a las mujeres que han sufrido acoso en los medios, manteniendo por detrás prácticas que sostienen y mantienen la opresión a mujeres, travas, trans y lesbianas y que al acosador lo perdonan o evitan denunciarlo. Nosotras escribimos, hablamos y contamos nuestras propias historias. There are myriad reasons why young people are abandoning conservative principles, one of which is that our publicly funded schools are run by and our children are taught by fools who revile truth. Neil Rigler, an English teacher at Deerfield High School in Deerfield, Illinois, is one such teacher. June 1, 1948. Denton, Texas. 21-year old Virginia Carpenter takes a train trip from her hometown of Texarkana to enrol at the Texas State College for Women. That evening, Virginia is dropped off at her dorm by a cab driver, who claims he last saw her speaking with two unidentified males. Virginia is never seen again and it would be three days before she is reported missing. Over the next several years, there would be numerous twists and turns, including alleged sightings of Virginia and suspicions about her cab driver. It is even theorized that Virginia’s disappearance might be connected to the infamous Texarkana Moonlight Murders, which took place in her hometown two years earlier. I've been working with Jane Rigler for a while - I've been helping her with some technical options for her performing rig, and I've been a guest lecturer at some of her classes at the University of Colorado in Colorado Springs. I've also had the chance to see her perform several times, and she is a stunningly good flute player. She also pushes the instrument to its limits, creating multi-timbred soundscapes with her flute and Ableton Live. I was really curious to find out how she became the player that she is, so the last time I visited UCCS I asked her to do an interview. It turns out that she's been listening to the podcast, and also has her students listening to it for class. Cool! She was game for the chat, and I was blown away by the result. This is a great way to kick off our second year of podcasts, and I'm grateful to Jane for the opportunity.
