This episode originally aired April 8, 2024.Hi everyone, welcome back to another episode of The Chai on Life Podcast. I'm Alex Segal and I am so excited about this conversation with Rebbetzin Yehudis Golshevsky. We're in a difficult time for the Jewish people. We just marked 180 days since October 7 — six whole months since Israel and the Jewish people were attacked on Simchat Torah. It's hard to believe. It's so hard to know that every single day, 134 hostages still remain in captivity, our soldiers are still fighting and our people are at riskThere is increased antisemitism around us. Incredible gaslighting about what Israel is doing in self-defense and just to survive and protect its people, our people. It's truly a painful moment and it can be confusing to know where to turn or where to find hope. This conversation with Rebbetzin Golshevsky, I hope will help you find some comfort. In our conversation, we speak about:-Rebbetzin Golshevsky's path to becoming a profound Torah teacher-How to connect to Nisan and Pesach during this unique time we're in and how we can extract so much meaning out of it-How to become joyful at this time-Why things may look so gross and ugly on the outside right now and what that means for the Jewish people-The process of redemption — what we can look to for hope-How to free yourself from something personal you're working on...and so much more! If you would like to learn more about Rebbetzin Golshevsky and SHIVITI and get on the school's mailing list for classes, visit https://shiviti.org.il/.To reach out to Rebbetzin Golshevsky directly, you can email her at Yehudis@shiviti.org. More about Rebbetzin Golshevsky:Rebbetzin Golshevsky founded and is the director of SHIVITI, a school in Jerusalem for women. Children Deserve Therapy: The Case for Child-Centered Play Therapy

In this episode of the Play Therapy Podcast, I address a question from Yehudis in New York about the growing belief that child therapy should be a “last resort” and that the focus should be on working with parents instead. I discuss why this perspective is misleading and share several compelling reasons why child-centered play therapy (CCPT) is essential for children, even when their external circumstances remain unchanged. I explain how CCPT gives children power and control, making them the agents of change within their families, and how they benefit from the four universal outcomes of CCPT: self-regulation, emotional vocabulary, self-esteem, and worldview. I also talk about the importance of advocating for CCPT and why many therapists who favor working with parents may simply lack the training or understanding of how powerful and transformative child-centered therapy can be. This episode is a rallying call for play therapists to confidently communicate the value of their work and continue advocating for children's right to healing, growth, and therapeutic support. This episode combines the two. Recently, Yehudis Stokes, Marjorie Robb, and their colleagues published a paper on the perspectives of youth, caregivers, and other stakeholders on implementing trauma-informed care in an inpatient mental health program. Yehudis Stokes is a Registered Nurse at the Children's Hospital of Eastern Ontario and a Clinical Nurse Specialist with the Psychosocial Oncology team at Princess Margaret Cancer Centre, and Marjorie Robb is the Acting Chief of Psychiatry at Children's Hospital of Eastern Ontario and the Division Chief of Community-Based Psychiatry. Yehudis Sherman--Jewish Single Mothers/Widows/Divorcees Rediscover Joy on Shabbos-No More Loneliness

Are you a single mother, widow or divorcee who dreads shabbos (shabbat)? Do you cry at the thought of having to spend shabbat alone, without your kids or anyone else to keep you company? Yehudis Sherman felt the exact same way. After her divorce, she discovered, first hand, the loneliness that many women experience when they spend shabbat isolated from their families. In response to this situation, she created an organization called Mishpachtainu, to help other women, like herself, celebrate shabbat with joy, unity and the warmth of community. Mishpactainu is located in the Boro Park section of Brooklyn, but Jewish women from all over attend Yehudis' shabbat meals. She has a home that sleeps over 10 women, so out of town guests are welcome. Yehudis' shabbat table is beautifully decorated, and she cooks all different types of foods to accommodate everyone's diets (gluten free, etc.) In addition to the shabbos meals, Yehudis offers a food pantry to provide women with basic household items from ketchup and napkins to tablecloths and makeup. Mishpachtainu has helped many women make the turn around from lonely and depressed to supported and happy. They build a new network of friends from the women that they meet at Yehuds' shabbat table. There is a significant cost in running Mishpachtainu. Yehudis is in need of financial donations, as well as donations of goods and services. For more information about the organization, and how to donate, visit mightymoms.love You can also donate via Zelle: donate@mishpachtainu.org To learn more about Mishpachtainu, visit: https://www.mishpachtainu.org/You can also email me, and I will put you in touch with Yehudis: atrebbetzins@gmail.com --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/vera-kessler/message

Yehudis grew up in London as part of the Charedi (Ultra-orthodox) Jewish community. When she disclosed her experiences of sexual abuse by a family friend, she and her family were punished and faced ostracisation.   In 2011, Yehudis set up a charity supporting other Jewish victims of sexual abuse across the UK, providing them with information that was otherwise inaccessible to them. Through her work in the sector, she developed a working group to establish the Sexual Abuse & Sexual Violence Awareness Week, the first of its kind in the UK. The week focuses on amplifying the voices of those with lived experiences and prompting resources, services, and campaigns about sexual abuse and sexual violence.   #ItsNotOk Yehudis chaired the Met Police Independent Advisory Group for Rape & Serious Sexual Offences, ensuring victims from all cultures and communities are represented in policing and referral pathways were established for victims that engaged in the criminal justice system. Little is known about many others, because with time Jewish women were taught that whatever they do must be done in a quiet manner of tzenuah. Unseen and unheard. And how the sanctity of a synagogue remains even after the space is not being used as a synagogue any longer. Plus, making sure grass doesn't grow in a functioning shul.

Rabbi Jacobson will discuss the following topics: Chassidus applied to Zos ChanukahWhy is it called by that name and what is its significance? Since we increase in light each night, why do we stop at eight? What's special about the eighth candle that it's light endures for the entire year? Chanukah discourses compare the dedication of the altar to the extra support we give a child to launch their education. How does this apply to a survivor of childhood abuse and neglect: how can they gather strength to be productive? Does the precedence of a Shabbat candle over a Chanukah candle indicate that a natural flame is greater than a miraculous one? Why do Hillel and Shammai disagree according to the explanation that they lit one eighth of the oil each day? Were the Chashmanayim righteous people or murderous mutineers who usurped the kingdom that belonged to Judah? Why don't we emphasize the vital role of women in Jewish history, as in Yehudis in the Chanukah story? Lessons from VayigashDid Yaakov do anything wrong by leaving his parents for 20 years? Why did Yosef say “is my father still alive” instead of “is our father still alive”? Why and how do we celebrate Hei Teves? Can I still give to your Gift of Meaning Campaign? Crowdfunding follow-up: How should we prioritize our charities? What can be done about people not treating others kindly? How to rekindle my connection to Torah? Regarding the recent abortion case being brought to the U.S. Supreme Court, what is the Torah's view on the matter of viability? Please comment on Dr. Feldman's passing Chassidus question: How do we reconcile Tanya that says we should learn from Joseph to overlook the evil others do to us to all the statements in Tehillim where Dovid prays for the downfall of his enemies?

So unlike the neon fluorescent holiday lights of other cultures, the Chanukah candle illuminates a small humble glow. This points to theessential nature of our kulturkampf with the Greeks, a battle of character vs.image and meaning vs. appearance. Chanukah sensitizes us to that which liesbeyond the eye, and that which transcends the pettiness of a gaudy display. Thistheme cast new light on the story of Yehudis and the celebration of women onChanukah until this very day.

My guest this week is survivor, thriver and activist, Yehudis Fletcher. Now, full disclosure, this podcast was recorded on the understanding that we'd be talking about Yehudis's journey to where she is today, rather than delve into the specifics of the abuse she was subjected to as a teenager - Yehudis has spoken and written about that extensively and there's more than enough available online to find if you'd like to learn more for context. We talk here about her background as a Charedi Jew, the coverup of the abuse by the community who should have protected her and how that has led her to fight extremism not only within Ultra Orthodox jewry but within the wider community as well. We discuss the parallels between her experiences & the recent Netflix tv phenomenon, Unorthodox and she quite rightly smashes some misconceptions I had about both her background and the work she now does so well, within organisations such as Migdal Emunah - a support service for survivors of sexual abuse - and Nahamu - an organisation Yehudis founded to ensure that members of all religious communities have access to education, autonomous choice & the ability to exercise this choice without intimidation, coercion or undue influence. The poem we discuss can be found here - nahamu.org/kinah-from-a-survivor-of-child-sexual-abuse/ Migdal Emunah, the support service for survivors of sexual abuse & their families is migdalemunah.org.uk Nahamu, Yehudis's organisation that battles extremism within religious communities is nahamu.org and Yehudis has also shared the website for Women's Aid, who work to make women & children safe - it's womensaid.org.uk -- If you'd like to support Sod's Law you can become a Sod's Law patron at patreon.com/sodspod from as little as £1 /$1 a month - there are different tiers including ad-free episodes, giveaways and more!
