This discussion is with Dr. Imani D. Owens, an associate professor of English at Rutgers University-New Brunswick. She studies and teaches African American and Caribbean literature, music, and performance. Her research has been supported by a Postdoctoral Fellowship in African American Studies at Princeton University, a Woodrow Wilson Career Enhancement Fellowship, and an NEH funded residency at the Schomburg Center for Research in Black Culture. Her work has appeared in the Cambridge Journal of Postcolonial Inquiry, Caribbean Literature in Transition, the Journal of Haitian Studies, MELUS, and small axe salon. She is currently a faculty fellow at the Rutgers Center for Cultural Analysis. In this conversation we discuss her book Turn the World Upside Down: Empire and Unruly Forms of Folk Culture in the U.S. and Caribbean (Columbia University Press: Black Lives in the Diaspora series) where she charts the connection between literary form and anti-imperialist politics in Caribbean and African American texts during the interwar period.
I am very excited to present my conversation with Chava Green, a women's studies scholar and a Chassidic Jew. Chava's dissertation, “the Hasidic face of feminism," explores how the idea of feminism expresses itself in the Chabad community, both through the Rebbe's teachings and in the lives of Chabad women. In our conversation, Chava and I define feminism and discuss this seemingly paradoxical idea of a "Chasidic Feminist." We hear about her journey to becoming a Chasidic feminist, and dive a bit deeper into her research. We touch on some common struggles that many Jewish women face and how the Rebbe spoke to those challenges. We also speak about sheitels (wigs) and cleaning help, among other things-this is a must-listen! A bit more about Chava: Chava Green received her PhD in Religious Studies from Emory University in May 2024. She has a BA in Women's and Gender Studies from Rutgers University–New Brunswick. In between her undergraduate and graduate work, she lived in Israel for two years studying Judaism in Jerusalem and Tzfat (Safed). Chava lives in Philadelphia with her husband and three children. This coming year she will be a visiting scholar at UPenn in the Jewish Studies department while also teaching classes in the Chabad girl's high school. Mitchell, the authors of Enhancing Inclusive Instruction, join us to explore how student perceptions of inclusive teaching practices align with the growing consensus on what constitutes inclusive teaching. How are they doing? A two part in-depth dialogue about creating inclusive pedagogical spaces to present and teach women's history with Jenevieve DeLosSantos, assistant teaching professor of art history and director of special pedagogic projects at Rutgers University and Ashleigh Coren, women's history content and interpretation curator at the National Portrait Gallery and acting head of education for the Smithsonian's American women's history initiative. In part 1 of this conversation, Coren discusses the importance of engaging with the wide spectrum of art practices by women artists and developing critical pedagogical strategies to facilitate culturally responsive teaching, to approach difficult conversations around race, gender and class and support educators attempting to provide more inclusive content. Part 2 expands the conversation to include additional pedagogical strategies to open up teaching women's histories to broader audiences, set up community norms, manage the approach to difficult traumatic topics that could be triggering, empower communities to help tell broader stories and address the erasure of certain communities. Ashleigh D. Coren is the acting head of education for the Smithsonian American Women's History Initiative and the Women's History Content and Interpretation Curator at the National Portrait Gallery, where she focuses on collections research, student and teacher programs, and public programming. NJFF is the largest student-run folk festival in the country. It has operated out of the American Studies Department at Rutgers University New Brunswick since its founding in 1975. Since then, countless students have interned with the festival, learning valuable skills, and developing relationships with mentors and peers. The people behind the festival are what makes it so unique—the people you don't see on the stage or on the craft path but who are indispensable pieces of this puzzle. Through this podcast episode, you will meet two of these people, a mother and daughter, both Board of Trustees members, who have spent the last few decades volunteering their time, talents, and enthusiasm to the New Jersey Folk Festival. Gillian Dauer is a 2022 graduate of Rutgers University New Brunswick. She interned with the New Jersey Folk Festival from the fall of 2019 to the spring of 2022 in several roles. Elena Rossi is the President of the New Jersey Folk Festival Board of Trustees, and mother to Catherine and Gabrielle Rossi. Elena has been heavily involved with the Folk Festival since her daughters served as interns, but she has been a fan of the festival since its inception in 1975. Gabrielle Rossi is a member of the Board of Trustees. She was a student intern with the festival at Rutgers from 2010 to 2014. She went on to earn a Master's in Nonprofit Management from Columbia University, and is now a doctoral student at Rutgers-Newark in the School of Public Affairs and Administration. Gabrielle is also the founder of The Dream Project, which facilitates cross country fundraising bike rides for college students. Jennie Collucci is a New Jersey based paranormal investigator and team historian with The ParaSight Experience. She is from Rochester New York and began investigating the paranormal while attending Rutgers University (New Brunswick, NJ) from which she graduated in 1990 with degrees in Chemistry and French Literature.Before joining ParaSight, Jennie investigated both in The United States and Europe at such varied locations as the Sherlock Holmes Museum in London, The Biltmore Hotel in Coral Gables Florida and White Hill Mansion in Fieldsboro NJ. Julia Kunin (b. 1961) is an artist living and working in Brooklyn, NY. Her work explores themes including queerness, the body, and the natural world. She earned a B.A. from Wellesley College (Wellesley, MA) and an M.F.A. from The Mason Gross School of the Arts, Rutgers University (New Brunswick, NJ). As we head into the 2022 Midterm Election we invited Kelly Dittmar to talk to us about the status of women in politics. Kelly is an Associate Professor of Political Science at Rutgers University–Camden; and Director of Research and Scholar at the Center for American Women and Politics (CAWP) at the Eagleton Institute of Politics. She is the co-author of A Seat at the Table: Congresswomen's Perspectives on Why Their Representation Matters and author of Navigating Gendered Terrain: Stereotypes and Strategy in Political Campaigns . Dittmar's research focuses on gender and American political institutions. Dittmar was an American Political Science Association (APSA) Congressional Fellow from 2011 to 2012. At CAWP, she manages national research projects, helps to develop and implement CAWP's research agenda, and contributes to CAWP reports, publications, and analyses. She also works with CAWP's programs for women's public leadership and has been an expert source and commentator for media outlets including MSNBC , NPR, PBS, the New York Times, and the Washington Post. The Women's House of Detention stood in New York City's Greenwich Village from 1929 to 1974. In The Women's House of Detention: A Queer History of a Forgotten Prison (Bold Type Books, 2022), writer, activist, and historian Hugh Ryan explores the history of queerness, transness, and gender nonconformity by reconstructing the little-known lives of incarcerated New Yorkers. He makes a clear case for prison abolition and demonstrates how the House of D, as it was colloquially known, helped define queerness for the rest of the United States. From the lesbian communities forged through the Women's House of Detention to the turbulent prison riots that presaged Stonewall, this is the story of a jail, the people it caged, the neighborhood it changed, and the resistance it inspired. The United States is entering its fourth month of an infant formula shortage, and disturbing new numbers released Friday show the situation hasn't gotten any better. According to Datasembly, more than 70 percent of infant formula is out-of-stock across the country, affecting millions of families. That's up from 43 percent just a few weeks ago—and in many states, the percentage is even higher. In February, Abbott Nutrition, the largest manufacturer of infant formula in the country, shut down one of its largest plants in Sturgis, Michigan and recalled its products due to contamination problems. And this exacerbated pandemic supply chain issues. The plant was shut down after four babies were reported having rare bacterial infections last fall. Two of the infants died. The babies had reportedly consumed formula from the Abbott plant, but after an investigation, the FDA found no conclusive evidence that the strains came from that plant. Last Wednesday, while testifying to a House of Representatives Oversight Panel, the head of the FDA Dr. Robert Califf, detailed the “egregiously unsanitary” conditions of Abbott Nutritions' plant in Michigan. On Tuesday, Abbott announced that it will begin reopening its Michigan plant by June 4, with some formula expected to start rolling out by the end of June, although full production of the plant will take longer. In the meantime, President Biden's Operation Fly Formula has announced its fourth additional shipment of infant formula from overseas, in an effort to offer caregivers some relief during this continuing shortage. But for now, the desperate searching for infant nutrition continues for so many. We spoke to Sarah Cosley who lives in Dubuque, Iowa, and started a Facebook group called the Infant Formula Shortage Support Group to connect with other parents struggling to find baby formula. Early American literature scholar Elisabeth Ceppi's thought-provoking new book, Invisible Masters: Gender, Race, and the Economy of Service in Early New England (Dartmouth College Press, 2018), rewrites the familiar narrative of the relation between Puritan religious culture and New England's economic culture as a history of the primary discourse that connected them: service. The understanding early Puritans had of themselves as God's servants and earthly masters was shaped by their immersion in an Atlantic culture of service and the worldly pressures and opportunities generated by New England's particular place in it. Concepts of spiritual service and mastery determined Puritan views of the men, women, and children who were servants and slaves in that world. So, too, did these concepts shape the experience of family, labor, law, and economy for those men, women, and children—the very bedrock of their lives. Early American literature scholar Elisabeth Ceppi's thought-provoking new book, Invisible Masters: Gender, Race, and the Economy of Service in Early New England (Dartmouth College Press, 2018), rewrites the familiar narrative of the relation between Puritan religious culture and New England's economic culture as a history of the primary discourse that connected them: service. The understanding early Puritans had of themselves as God's servants and earthly masters was shaped by their immersion in an Atlantic culture of service and the worldly pressures and opportunities generated by New England's particular place in it. Concepts of spiritual service and mastery determined Puritan views of the men, women, and children who were servants and slaves in that world. So, too, did these concepts shape the experience of family, labor, law, and economy for those men, women, and children—the very bedrock of their lives. This strikingly original look at Puritan culture will appeal to a wide range of Americanists and historians. Elisabeth Ceppi is a Professor of English at Portland State University. Professor Ceppi's research focuses on early American representations of unfreedom and what they reveal about how concepts of liberty, authority, and obedience entwine with hierarchies of gender, race, and class. Jerrad P. Pacatte is a Ph.D. candidate and School of Arts and Sciences Excellence Fellow in the Department of History at Rutgers University-New Brunswick. A social historian of gender, slavery, and emancipation in early America and the Atlantic World, Jerrad is currently completing his dissertation, entitled “The Work of Freedom: African American Women and the Ordeal of Emancipation in New England, 1740-1840” which examines the everyday lives, labors, and emancipation experiences of African-descended women in late-colonial and early republic New England. Jonathan Holloway, the President at Rutgers University, recently gave a speech to the Faculty Senate at Rutgers University-New Brunswick, a member of the Big Ten Conference. The speech caught national attention when he told the group “ For too long the entire Rutgers community has been laboring under the illusion that athletics will generate enough revenue to pay for itself and, then, in time turn a profit. Let me disabuse you of that claim. While I would be thrilled if athletics were to cover all of its expenses, it is highly unlikely that it will. Only 2 percent of major college athletics programs run in the black, and not many more than that break even. The better way to think about athletics is that it represents a commitment by the university that helps tell a compelling story about this institution—one that will inspire applicants, alumni, and friends to learn more about we have to offer as a university in 2022. In this regard, the story-telling capability of athletics far outstrips any other thing that we do at Rutgers." Is that an appropriate summary of where athletics should fit into a campus? Or can we find different ways to define how athletics fits into the campus and its culture? My guests today have led three different institutions, and have written two books on leadership and the presidency: their new book is called “Leadership Matters: Confronting the Hard choices Facing Higher Education”, as well as their previous book, “How to Run a College”, both from Johns Hopkins Press. Joseph King is the past president at Lyon College (MO) and Brian Mitchell is the current president of Academic Innovators, and a past president at Bucknell University (PA) and Washington and Jefferson College (PA).
