"Get more comfortable with silence. There's an exercise in improv where you count from one to ten. It forces you to pause, process, form, and then speak."This week on the How to Thrive podcast, Claire and Helen are joined by Jess Rogers, a conversations and improv trainer, and founder of Tama Learning. Jess will already be familiar to those who joined us at How to Thrive Manchester, where she brought the house down with her session on improv for managing change. She'll be doing it all again in London in October. Her day job sits across a spectrum from classic learning and development, all the way through to performing and teaching pure improv with groups like Banana Hut Gang and Blanche Improv in London. Everything she does, she says, comes back to conversations. In this episode, Claire and Helen talk to Jess about what improv actually is, why “yes and…” is widely misunderstood, and how accepting someone else's reality before adding your own perspective can transform the way you show up.We also explore the surprising overlap between improv skills and the skills that underpin every high-performing team. It's also one of the most joyful conversations we've recorded! We hope you enjoy it as much as we did.More about Jess:LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/jess-rogers-she-her-86766ba2/Tama Learning: https://tamalearning.com/With thanks to our sponsors:Lewis Silkin — a full service law firm that works closely with organisations to help protect and enhance what matters most. Imagine a place that dares to speak truths many are afraid to say. A place that celebrates communities too often forgotten and tells the stories rarely heard. Dr. Laura Scherck Wittcoff sits down with Raymond O. Caldwell, Artistic Director, and Johannah Maynard Edwards, Managing Director, of The Fountain Theatre — a nonprofit performing arts organization in Hollywood, California, that has been producing bold, socially conscious theater for 35 years. Raymond and Johannah share how they found each other through what Johannah calls a "cosmic poof," how they're navigating the transition from the theater's founding leadership into a new generation, and why they believe cultural institutions must serve as places to practice humanity in a post-pandemic world. From the Living Ticket model that removes price barriers to community dramaturgy that develops new plays inside faith communities and neighborhoods across Los Angeles, this conversation is a masterclass in mission-driven, human-centered arts leadership. Founded in 1990 by Deborah Culver and Stephen Sachs, The Fountain Theatre was created as a creative home for artists from diverse cultural backgrounds. Its mission is to develop and present bold new plays and unique interpretations of established works that reflect the cultural richness and social issues of contemporary Los Angeles and the nation. The Fountain Theatre has built a reputation over more than three decades for producing thought-provoking performances and supporting voices that may not always be heard on traditional stages. The organization is also known for presenting flamenco performances and running educational outreach programs that connect young people and communities to the arts. Johannah Maynard Edwards, Managing Director Prior to joining The Fountain, Johannah served as Executive Artistic Director of the National Women's Theater Festival in Raleigh, North Carolina, where she produced, directed, and championed hundreds of productions by artists of underrepresented genders. A nationally recognized leader in arts accessibility, Johannah received the Kennedy Center's LEAD Award for Emerging Leaders and is Chief Ambassador for PAAL, the Parent Artist Advocacy League. She is passionate about developing new sociopolitical work and fostering equitable, inclusive spaces for artists and audiences alike. Raymond O. Caldwell, Artistic Director Prior to The Fountain, Raymond was the Artistic Director at Washington DC's Theater Alliance for six seasons, where he directed, developed, and produced socially conscious, thought-provoking programming that transformed the region and had a global impact. Under his leadership, Theater Alliance was chosen to lead an American Arts Envoy with the U.S. Department of State. He devised and directed new work with 23 artists and activists from Bangladesh, Nepal, India, and the United States exploring what inclusion, diversity, equity, and accessibility mean on the global stage. Raymond was a faculty member and resident director at Harvard University's Department of Theater Arts, holds an MFA in Acting and New Play Development from Ohio State University, and a BFA in Acting from the University of Florida. Prescribed burns are carefully planned fires on public lands to help reduce the risk of wildfires in communities. They're often conducted by by government agencies such as the Bureau of Land Management, but new groups of community members are now getting involved. Prescribed Burn Associations, also known as PBAs, are local groups of community members, land owners and other volunteers that conduct prescribed burns on private land. They also work closely with certified burn managers for planning, securing permits and more to prepare the site for fire. Chris Adlam is a regional fire specialist for Oregon State University's Extension Program. Aaron Krikava is an organizer for the Rogue Valley PBA. They both join us to share more on what PBAs are and the impact they have had in Oregon.
"We've all got lots of stuff we should do. Should exercise more, should eat healthier, should do this, should do that. We end up shoulding all over ourselves. Just have a challenge and go - I will learn from this."We are absolutely delighted to welcome Andy Green to the How to Thrive podcast this week. Andy is a neuro-strategist, leadership and culture specialist, TEDx speaker, and the bridge between the veterinary and legal worlds in more ways than one.Andy spent 27 years as a clinical vet before stepping back from practice to focus full-time on leadership, coaching and culture - work that had been quietly growing alongside his clinical career for years. That transition didn't come easily. When he finally told his fellow directors, he was in tears. It struck at the very core of who he thought he was.In this episode, Claire and Helen talk to Andy about the striking parallels between how vets and lawyers define themselves by their profession, what it really takes to separate your identity from your job title, and why curiosity and vulnerability are more closely linked than most people realise. In October 2023, Rural Voice co-founder and host Kerri Miller traveled to Little Falls to talk about social isolation in greater Minnesota. Community members said it's easy to feel disconnected and alone, especially if they struggle with some kind of mental health challenge. This September, Miller took the same question to Wadena. Social isolation is when a person objectively doesn't have relationships or contact with others. It's similar to loneliness, which is when people subjectively feel isolated. Both are rampant in rural communities, especially among older residents. And because social isolation is tied closely to other health outcomes, it has implications for all. Rural Voice in Wadena Wadena residents swapped stories of recognizing isolation in their community. They also shared ideas for combatting it, which ranged from systemic overhauls, like bringing in more therapists, to more personal interventions, like how churches and community organizations can respond to neighbors who seem alone. How can parents create an emotionally safe space for their child when their home is no longer secure? Environmental crises like the LA fires have displaced families, leaving parents navigating uncertainty while trying to comfort their children. Today, I'm joined by fellow pediatrician Dr. Harvey Karp, who experienced the loss of his own home, to discuss how we can support children in processing trauma and building resilience after life-altering events. We discuss: How parents can support children through difficult experiences by acknowledging their emotions, using age-appropriate language, and allowing them to express their fears and grief in a safe environment. That acknowledging emotions and using age-appropriate language can help children express fears and grief in a safe environment How to help them regain a sense of control and security after traumatic events To connect with Dr. Harvey follow him on Instagram @happiest_baby and check out all his resources on https://www.happiestbaby.com and purchase his best-selling book The Happiest Baby on the Block We'd like to know who is listening!
