Dean's Chat is so excited to welcome back student doctor Miko Fogarty! As a current 4th year student at the Samuel Merritt University College of Podiatric Medicine, she shares unique insights into what her 4th year has been like traveling the country for her externship programs and what she is most excited for in the future.  In this interview, Drs. Jensen and Richey dive deeper into Miko's previous career as a professional ballerina. Born in London, Miko Fogarty is a former award-winning professional ballet dancer and a current podiatric medical student. Aftertraining at the Indiana Ballet Conservatory in the U.S. and Jinushi Kaoru Ecole du Ballet in Japan, Mikojoined the Birmingham Royal Ballet as the youngest artist in 2015 and toured around the United Kingdom dancing in performances such as Swan Lake, Romeo and Juliet, Midsummer's Night Dream, and the Nutcracker. Miko has received worldwide recognition for her performances. She was awarded the Gold Medal at theMoscow International Ballet Competition and was a Prize Winner at the Prix de Lausanne in Switzerland. Other accolades include the Silver Medal from Varna International Ballet Competition, a Bronze Medal from YAGP New York Finals, and two Gold Medals from the World Ballet Competition. Although Miko's dance career was flourishing, she could not ignore her goal of pursuing a college education and discovering more about the intricacies of medicine and healthcare. She started at Feather River College and Contra Costa College, where she earned her Chemistry and Biology Associate's Degrees before transferring to the University of California, Berkeley in 2018. Miko graduated with honors in Integrative Biology in 2020 while also researching brain cancer therapies at the University of California, San Francisco. Currently, Miko is a podiatric medical student studying to become a foot and ankle surgeon in California. Miko found her passion for teaching classical ballet in Thailand when she gave her first ballet class in 2016. Since then, Miko has continued to teach and has coached hundreds of students of all levels. She has taught masterclasses in New Zealand, Panama, Mexico, Australia, Taiwan, Singapore, Malaysia, Indonesia, and the Philippines. Miko is also active on social media with over 230,000 followers on Instagram and 29 million views on Youtube and was listed as one of “The Most Influential People of 2011” in Dance Spirit Magazine. "I don't even know what episode it is. Season 3 Episode 36? There's so many episodes in Season 3, who thought this was a good idea!" exclaims Christi as it is indeed Episode 36 "Do-Si-Do and Do-Si-Don't". In order to stretch the season out as much as possible this week, Abby threatens that the girl's performance at In10sity Dance Buffalo Invitational will determine if they go to nationals or not. This is weird for many reasons. For one it's pretty clear who will and won't be going already, but also as long as you have money pretty much anyone can go! But we need to stretch out the Mackenzie and Asia rivalry just a teensy bit more to get people invested in Raising Asia, so the pressure is on.Abby reveals that Dance Spirit Magazine is looking to highlight one of the girls to showcase what the day in the life of an ALDC member is really like. Of course the girls they select is Maddie, though a little prodding by Jill reveals it was Abby who actually insisted on Maddie. Jill sporadicly shows up at Melissa's house during the photoshoot to try and convince the magazine to feature Kendall, though her persistence is met with annoyed looks. Jill gets a minor win when Kendall is paired up with Maddie for a duet, though Holly seems confused as to why Jill is excited at all.Jill knack for the spotlight continues at competition where she dawns full cowboy gear in honor of the country themed group dance and does a little dance, "Mackenzie taught her". Oh Jill, never change (maybe take off the chaps). Quotes“Hylands in their permanent spot [on the Pyramid]! I just never realized how much at the bottom they were. Oh it's always. And what's funny about it is Holly always talks about how Nia was at the bottom of the Pyramid. No, it was Paige and Brooke." (10:20-10:35 | Christi & Kelly)“She is saying insane things to the children. Although at this point our kids aren't even phased. Uh uh, I don't think they are. I think it goes in one ear and out the other” (12:40-12:50 | Christi & Kelly)“If you ever got called into that studio by yourself, it was an instant vomit trigger." (29:16-29:22 | Christi)“Boy Christi, you're going to fuck it all up in Jackson Square next week, no need to worry. Throwing your drink! Ugh, what a waste of a good hurricane." Cat was living in LA for the last 4 or 5 years and was teaching at Movement Lifestyle, Millennium, IMMAspace and Edge Dance Studio. She believes in the power of self-love and breaking the stigmas of mental illness.. She is very passionate about mental health, the younger generation (ie: age appropriate dance, positive training, etc), and being open and honest about things in dance such as abuse, misconduct, etc. Cat isn’t afraid to say what she believes in and is working her hardest to be a good person instead of just a good dancer.  Cat’s also been known for her mouth but as she shed layers of her ego, She is trying to discover how to communicate with kindness and lead by example rather than preach. Trying to evolve from the inside out and hoping to inspire others to do the same, her classes are very heavily based on self-love. She gets deep.   Follow Cat:www.catcogliandro.comInstagram @cat_cogliandroInstagram @catastrophe_danceCat Cogliandro on YouTube  Follow us:Learn more: Dance Your LifeLearn more: Maxt Out Dance CompetitionInstagram @maxtoutdanceMaxt Out on FacebookTikTok @maxtoutdanceSign-up for our FREE Maxt Out at Home Dance Classes!  Follow Joanna:Learn more The Get Up GirlJoanna Vargas on InstagramJoanna Vargas on FacebookTikTok @joannavargasofficial

This week on 5.6.7.EIGHT, Aleksandra sits down with Kathryn Morgan, an accomplished ballerina who, in spite of an autoimmune illness, has become a multimedia dance superstar — running a YouTube channel nearing 160,000 subscribers, recording her own podcast, and writing a regular column for Dance Spirit Magazine. Kathryn studied at the School of American Ballet, danced for the New York City Ballet, and is currently a soloist at the Miami City Ballet. Morgan also serves as a judge for the Youth America Grand Prix. Kathryn’s story is one filled with determination, perseverance, and reinvention. Kathryn, who saw an early rise to ballet prominence, was hired onto the New York City Ballet at the young age of 17, but just years later, she was diagnosed with an autoimmune disorder that forced her to step away from the stage for 7 years. However, in her time away, Kathryn birthed an incredible online presence and has ultimately now found her way back to the stage. On the podcast, Kathryn walks through her entire journey and recaps incredible lessons that she’s picked from her eventful life, which are many.   Moving Quotes: “[With critics] you have two choices. You can either agree with them or disagree with them. And it’s a matter not of what they think but of how you react to it." “Don’t let other people put you down… It’s not me trying to prove [my critics] wrong. It’s me trying to prove to myself that, no, I’m not any of that. And I have more to offer. And that’s no matter what field you’re in." “I know so many people have big ideas and goals, and yes, you need to think positive. But if you don’t act on those goals — if you don’t go for it — you can’t just wish things into happening.” “[In auditions], the judges only see 50 percent of your solo. Because during the other 50 percent, they’re looking down, writing. So, if something goes wrong, don’t let it throw you off… Mistakes don’t necessarily count against you. It’s how you handle them." “If you want to be a dancer, you have to have the proper training. It’s not one of those careers you can wish to happen. You’ve got to put in the work for it."  [On overcoming adversity] “I didn’t want to tell that little 3-year-old me that you’re done. I’ve worked my whole life to be in this industry, and just to have it end was not an option for me. So, I was going to try and stay relevant however I could."   Bullet Points (w/ timestamps) - Highlighting key topics discussed: 2:16: Kathryn walks through her entire story, from her quick rise to her sudden fall to finding unforeseen success in a new arena to being reunited with the artform she loves. 11:24: Kathryn speaks on the origins of her personal branding and discusses how her YouTube topics come to be. 13:10: Kathryn describes the mixture of emotions she felt as she, after 7 years, made her return to dance with the Miami City Ballet. 14:52: Morgan discusses how she stayed in dance-ready shape through her time away from the ballet spotlight. 17:10: Morgan shares what she believes may be the source of her entrepreneurial “go-getter” spirit. 18:38: Kathryn discusses what she hopes others will learn from her incredible life journey and gives some wise words on fighting back against adversity. 21:37: Kathryn shares a hilarious story about an on-stage blunder during a rather emotionally-charged scene. 24:37: Kathryn gives some details around her quarterly subscription box, full of themed ballet goodies. 27:52: Kathryn shares some tips on leaving a lasting impression in the audition process, including one extremely valuable piece of advice that she has learned since being in the judge’s chair.  33:47: Morgan, who has traveled quite a bit, gives some advice on staying healthy and dance-ready while enduring long bouts of travel.  41:56: Kathryn rounds out the podcast by discussing what people can do, practically, to achieve their dreams in dance or in entrepreneurship.  Bullet List of Resources –  Kathryn Morgan Personal Website YouTube Instagram

Glenn Douglas Packard was born the eldest of three in Detroit, MI to Roger and Paulette Packard. When Glenn was 5 years old, his father convinced the family to pack up all their belongings and move to a run-down farm in Michigan, where Roger saw a potential future in the dairy business. As Glenn was growing up into adolescence and the farm grew profitable, he began working in the family business in Clare, MI. Eventually, Glenn went on to study Dairy Management at Michigan State University. On one of his vacation trips back home, he suffered a horrible accident with a 4-wheeler. With a compound factor to his right tibia and fibula leg, his doctors insisted the only option was to amputate his leg from the knee down. After months of fighting the infection, which had spread through his entire body, due to the open wound, countless surgeries and a steel rod places in his leg, Glenn had to relearn how to walk. Invertigo Dance Theatre was recently named by Dance Spirit Magazine as one of the “top six trend-setting companies to watch in LA.” Founded by choreographer Laura Karlin, Invertigo uses dance to tell compelling stories and create deep connections with communities. One of the most fascinating aspects of Invertigo is that they perform with live musicians, and even use musicians who double as dancers in their productions. One of my goals with this show is to bridge boundaries and showcase a wide variety of musical styles and perspectives. As a musician, it's easy to overlook the symbiotic relationship between music and the movement arts. To that end, I'm delighted to present this interview with Laura Karlin and my first inside look at the inner workings of a dance company, Invertigo Dance Theatre, with their innovative use of live music and musicians as integral components of their performances. Their upcoming production of “After It Happened”, a piece inspired by the aftermath of the Haiti Earthquake, and set to premiere at the Ford Theater in Los Angeles this Friday, Sept. 30.
