It's July right now and I am spending a lot of time camping, so to prepare I recorded this episode in May. I decided to plan ahead so I could just enjoy nature and time away without stressing about having podcast episodes due. This is actually very relevant to the guest and topic today, which is why I mention it. I prioritized what I wanted and needed for my own wellbeing in July and planned ahead to make it happen. My guest, Robynn Powers, is a health coach, personal trainer, nutrition coach, pre-and-post natal exercise specialist, and group fitness instructor who works with moms to help them implement daily strategies to improve their energy, strength, and confidence. It's all about prioritizing and deciding on your own self care. Robynn and I have a wonderful conversation about moms - but really this can apply to everybody - choosing to prioritize their health needs for the benefit not just of themselves but their families too. Robynn has several pieces of advice on how to re-balance busy mom lives so things can get done without sacrificing mom health, but her single biggest piece of advice is sleep. Get more sleep. Sleep well. What she says makes a lot of sense because sleep affects everything in our lives from focus to hormones. She acknowledges that we can't just get more sleep all at once but we can start small, with just going to bed a half hour earlier every night, and weigh the long term benefits of sleep over the short-term gain of a half hour to ourselves. But we also talk about mindset, about choosing ourselves as a priority, and about how to make new choices stick. Robynn's advice and knowledge is so practical and useful that I know everyone will benefit from hearing it. Small changes can make such a large difference to our overall health and we are worth it.About Robynn PowersRobynn Powers is a Health Coach with a BA in Psychology and a certified Personal Trainer, Nutrition Coach, Pre/Post-natal Exercise Specialist, and Group Fitness Instructor who helps busy Moms implement daily strategies to improve their energy, strength, and confidence. She is passionate about helping Moms become the healthiest versions of themselves so that they can feel good in their bodies and feel free to live their lives the way they deserve to, without taking time away from family or making the journey to health too complicated. She is a Health Coach and a Mom, helping other Moms identify what is keeping them stuck and helping them transform their overall health...and get BIG results in spite of what they've been able to achieve in the past.—Learn more about Dr Michelle Tubman and Wayza Health:Website: www.wayzahealth.comFollow me on Facebook and InstagramLearn more about Robynn Powers:Website: www.simplyembellishedlife.comInstagramFacebook

My guest @megbie growing up, exercise and Megan did not mix. Her friends used to invite her on trails at the time and she could not bring herself to even attempt it. She felt it better to stick to her “typical” asian upbringing, focusing on education and getting a great start on her career as a lawyer. The stress of this career would catch up to her and after some time took a toll on her mental state. Needing a change in her life to hopefully change the trajectory of her life, the next time her friends invited her on a hike, she begrudgingly accepted. One of the first experiences she had with hiking was the many steps to Lion Rock in Hong Kong. The view and feeling of reaching the end was the spark Megan needed to to start her fitness journey. From here, she began ultra trail running around the globe in places like Peru, Canary Islands, Japan, and Korea to name a few. In 2019, Megan was diagnosed with breast cancer, and sadly a second diagnosis in 2021. This made Megan have to readjust and take a step back from ultra running for some time. The Wellness Paradox

In episode 24 we're joined by Thomas Hammett, a physical therapist who has a unique perspective for the role fitness professionals not only play in the physical therapy ecosystem, but also in the overall medical continuum.  Although Thomas is a traditionally trained physical therapist, the clinical model he oversees and proliferates employs the use of fitness professionals (exercise specialists as he calls it) in the intake and ongoing treatment of all patients that come into the clinic. This very novel model he presents not only enhances acute patient outcomes and leads to greater clinic profitability, but more importantly improves long-term patient outcomes (with respect to chronic disease and disability). This is, in effect, the lifestyle medicine paradigm we've talked about so often on the podcast. Treating the “whole person” as Thomas puts it, rather than just the issue at hand. What's most exciting for fitness and exercise professionals is the opportunity this presents for those of us with the right skill set. As Thomas points out, the vast majority of physical therapists not only want, but need, strong relationships with fitness and exercise professionals to augment what they can do within their scope of practice and the time they have for treatment. With this in mind, Thomas points out that physical therapist relationships could be a great gateway for fitness and exercise professionals into the healthcare delivery system. In our discussion, he'll not only layout the importance of this to overall population health but also present a framework through which fitness and exercise professionals can make these relationships a reality. Our Guest: Thomas Hammett, DPT, DipACLM Thomas Hammett is a medical leader and consultant focused on building better medicine. Based on his own challenges in physical therapy practice and medical management, Thomas has found a distinct set of opportunities to guide the medical profession to move into the preventive realm of care. In order to move medicine towards a value-based model, medical professionals must make a commitment to adopt new practice techniques better suited to addressing the needs of the public. Thomas works with medical professionals by laying out roadmaps for this change and guiding teams to create innovative solutions to the unique challenges they face. Thomas currently serves as the Director of Clinical Services for Pinnacle Medical Wellness. As the Director of Clinical Services, Thomas helps to manage the daily operations of Lifestyle Medicine-focused clinics for multiple medical groups, and provides consulting and training for clinicians and leaders in adopting Lifestyle Medicine practice. He has received an advanced board certification in Lifestyle Medicine by the American College of Lifestyle Medicine (ACLM). Most recently, Thomas has begun collaboration with Jeff Young, Kinesiologist to build a suite of resources, called the Medicine to Fitness Institute, for fitness professionals and medical providers to help build the bridge from medicine to exercise. To wrap up his bio, Thomas wanted to include a personal quote about his “why”: “We have a distinct duty to fulfill the call to action to change medicine. We have a population that is not well served by the medical model. We have highly trained medical professionals that burn out not due to the gravity of the challenge of their work, but due to a set of systemic issues that prevent good medical care and outcomes. The only way that we can change our situation is to stand up, visualize a better system together, and endeavor to make continuous improvement with our peers. This is an opportunity that I wake up every day hungry to pursue.”

We are back for the 2nd part of this important discussion with the PT Dr's, Dan & Alex. Having established in part 1 the prevalent bias and deep-rooted fitness misconceptions that continue to impact the wider industry, and recognising the ever-increasing public health needs, we go deeper down the rabbit hole to weigh up the role of client referral to other qualified specialists. In a never-ending information age, we will likely benefit from a more analytical fitness workforce who can think critically and seek reliable scientific evidence before laying down a solid, unbreakable knowledge and belief construct that strongly influences their coaching and behaviours. So, let's get to it: referral and critical thinking! Guest biographiesDr Alex De Lyon: an internationally accredited Personal Trainer and Health & Exercise Specialist with over 14 years of experience in health and fitness. He holds a PhD in the field of Sport & Exercise Science, an MSc in Sport & Exercise Psychology, and a First-Class degree in Sports Coaching & Performance. Gaining muscle, losing weight, adding definition, burning fat, getting injured. What? One of these is not like the others, yet all can be outcomes of an exercise program. You work out because you want to make changes to your body; NO ONE wants to get injured but that is exactly what happens if exercise is done incorrectly or if an exercise program is not designed for your specific needs. Designing exercise programs is a combination of science and art; a good coach has to know the science of how the body adapts to exercise along with the art of selecting exercises that are fun, effective and, most importantly, greatly reduce the risk of injury both during exercise as well as when you go outside of the gym to participate in your favorite activities.  Dr. John Rusin is a physical therapist and strength coach who has created the Pain Free Performance Specialist education program for fitness professionals. Dr. Rusin develops conditioning programs for professional athletes in many sports, travels the world to teach fitness professionals how to design exercise programs and is now visiting the All About Fitness podcast to share insights with you on how you can get the most out of your workouts while greatly reducing the risk of injury. On this episode John shares a unique story about how he got started on his fitness journey, what motivated him to become a performance coach and provides some strength training tips that you can use right away in your own workouts. If you love lifting heavy stuff and want to continue working hard no matter how old you become, then this episode of All About Fitness is for you! To see AWESOME exercises that you should be doing, follow @DrJohnRusin on Instagram - that's how I first learned about him, his content is great and definitely worth your time. Having believed, you were marked in him with a seal, the promised Holy Spirit, who is a deposit guaranteeing our inheritance until the redemption of those who are God's possession- to the praise of his glory.”   Ephesians 1:15–23 “For this reason, ever since I heard about your faith in the Lord Jesus and your love for all the saints, I have not stopped giving thanks for you, remembering you in my prayers. I keep asking that the God of our Lord Jesus Christ, the glorious Father, may give you the spirit of wisdom and revelation, so that you may know him better. I pray also that the eyes of your heart may be enlightened in order that you may know the hope to which he has called you, the riches of his glorious inheritance in the saints, and his incomparably great power for us who believe. That power is like the working of his mighty strength, which he exerted in Christ when he raised him from the dead and seated him at his right hand in the heavenly realms, far above all rule and authority, power and dominion, and every title that can be given, not only in the present age but also in the one to come. And God placed all things under his feet and appointed him to be head over everything for the church, which is his body, the fullness of him who fills everything in every way.”   Ephesians 2:8–10 “For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith – and this not from yourselves, it is the gift of God – not by works, so that no one can boast. For we are God‘s workmanship, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do.“   Ephesians 2:13 “But now in Christ Jesus you who once were far away have been brought near through the blood of Christ.“   Philippians 1:6 “being confident of this, that he who began a good work in you will carry it on to completion until the day of Christ Jesus.”

Thom Rieck is an Exercise Specialist at the Mayo Clinic Healthy Living Program. He’s a Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist, Certified Personal Trainer and PEAK Pilates Instructor. He has been working as a personal trainer for over 10 years and he’s also an avid motorcyclist.    Tom has been riding since the age of 2, believe it or not, when his father took him out on his ’74 Honda CB 250 in a car seat. He now rides a 1995 BMW K75S, all on his own.   Thom is currently working on a book called “Strength and Fitness for the Motorcyclist”. As an expert in exercise and the effects on the body, who is more qualified to give advice on staying fit to get the most out of riding a motorcycle? Thom says that motorcycles are designed to withstand city commuting, long trips and rough terrain, yet it is our bodies that can limit our riding endurance. His goal is to share his knowledge and experience to become your own personal trainer. He gives great advice about mobility, flexibility, cardiovascular and resistance training for the adventure rider. It isn’t about going to the gym every day, or spending hours working out. He says just taking 20 to 30 minutes a day will mean a longer life and better health.
