If your workouts are centred around achieving maximum calorie burn - or you’re mega into running but don’t do much to strengthen your hard-working muscles between clocking up those 5ks - it’s time for a rethink. Because all women need to be strength training - according to two of the most esteemed trainers in the business. They are Joslyn Thompson Rule, Nike Master Trainer, women’s strength specialist, author of How To Move It and host of the Fitness Unfiltered podcast, and Andy Vincent, a PT with 20+ years experience in the fitness industry who has extensively studied strength and conditioning, sports performance, nutrition and biomechanics. So, why exactly is strength training so important for women? What do you need to get started? How do you progress your practice? And is there any truth supporting that tired - but still getting traction - notion that lifting weights can ‘bulk you up’? Women’s Health’s Editor-in-Chief Claire Sanderson gets to the bottom of these questions, and more, in today's show.Join Joslyn Thompson Rule on Instagram: @joslynthompsonruleJoin Andy Vincent on Instagram @andyvincentptJoin Claire Sanderson on Instagram @clairesandersonJoin Women's Health UK on Instagram @womenshealthukLike what you’re hearing? On this week's podcast, I catch up with two formidable ladies in the fields of women's health and sport. Stacy Sims, PhD is an expert in sex differences, and globally acclaimed for her research and TED Talk, ‘Women are Not Small Men'. She's dedicated the last 20 years to educating women, and men, on the female body, and how it responds differently to athleticism than the male body. Joslyn Thompson Rule, a woman with many strings to her bow, is a Nike Global Master Trainer, a Sports Therapist, and Coaching Mentor. She draws from her years of coaching women, and young girls as we discuss the benefits of working with the female cycle: how it not only boosts health and training results, but also empowers girls to own their fitness through every stage of the menstrual cycle. I talk about my experiences with puberty, how confusing navigating that time can be, and we discuss why so many girls are dropping out of sport during puberty, after getting their period. I definitely remember skipping P.E. during that early life phase. It's crazy that something that half the population gets is still the cause of such embarrassment. This week's episode is a reminder to start having open conversations with girls about periods and sport early on. To be honest, I spent most of this episode enthralled by Stacy and Joslyn's passion and commitment to this issue. And I learned a lot of things about my body, training, and the menstrual cycle that I didn't know. Even as an adult! Easy listening guys - and as always mad, mad love. You can follow @DrStacySims and @JoslynThompsonRule, and you can follow us @gurlstalk. “It's one thing to say you can do something. It's another to believe that you can. The most important thing is the moment you take the first step. After that, all you need is the will power within you to see it through the end, regardless of your limitations.” – Betina Betina Gozo is a Nike Master Trainer, musician, and the finalist for Women's Health Magazine's Next Fitness Star competition. Vote for her here. She stopped by the podcast today to talk about the emotional benefits of working out, empowering women and what it's like to work at Nike World Headquarters. She also talks about being in a cover band and why Billy Jean is one of her favorite songs to play. Like me, she's Filipino and was raised by a single Mom who taught her all about hard work and dedication. She was super cool to talk to so I know you'll dig listening to the podcast. Some of what you'll learn listening to Betina: Common fears she sees in women and how to deal with them The 5 emotional benefits of working out Advice on how to get started The importance of accumulating small wins The single most important thing to do to get started What to focus on in training (and life) LINKS Women Health Next Fitness Star - Vote for Betina Here http://BetinaGozo.com (BetinaGozo.com) http://Traincanvas.com (Traincanvas.com)
