It's Monday, April 7th, 2025 and welcome to the spring edition of Hills Review -- the High School East Student Podcast. On Tuesday, Sitabjo Bhowmick explores the negative aspects of this technology and explains why he thinks self-driving cars should be banned. Dancing is a much loved form of expression, so it makes sense that many would want to pursue it as a career. However, with thousands of people auditioning for the same jobs, rejection is more common than success. On Wednesday, Joshua Pollack talks to several dancers – from those just starting out to Radio City Rockettes – about the ups and downs of this profession. The physical and mental demands of orthopedic surgery make it one of the most difficult professions in all of medicine. On Thursday, Kaeri Mukora explores the long, academically demanding path that one must take to reach this goal. Have you ever wanted to learn a new language? Do you like cartoons? In this episode, we take a fascinating journey behind the scenes with Adam Brand, the fourth-generation owner of M&S Schmalberg Flowers, the last artificial flower factory of its kind in America. Since 1916, this family-owned business has been handcrafting exquisite fabric flowers that have adorned high fashion, Broadway, Hollywood, and some of the world's most well-known celebrities and designers. You've likely seen their work without realizing it—on Hamilton, Boardwalk Empire, The Radio City Rockettes, Bridgerton, The Gilded Age, and countless other productions. Their creations have been featured by fashion icons such as Oscar de la Renta, Ralph Lauren, and Calvin Klein, and have been worn by stars including Beyoncé, Scarlett Johansson, and Prince Harry and Meghan Markle.Adam shares the rich history of his family's business, from its early days to the challenges of keeping the craft alive in an ever-changing industry. He also tells the incredible story of his grandfather, Holocaust survivor Harold Brand, whose resilience, perseverance, and sheer determination shaped the company's legacy. You'll hear how Adam found his own path to becoming the next-generation “flower man,” the artistry behind their handcrafted creations, and the game-changing events that transformed M&S Schmalberg forever.Episode Highlights:(3:15) Adam introduces his company and shares its deep history, which began in 1916 with his great-great uncles.(5:59) The remarkable story of Adam's grandfather, Harold Brand—a Holocaust survivor, a man of strength and perseverance, and someone who even survived being shot in the neck during an employee dispute. His resilience and work ethic shaped the company and remain an inspiration today.(16:40) How did Adam become the next-generation “Flower Man”? He shares his deeply personal journey and the pivotal moment when everything changed for him. He also talks about longtime employee Miriam, who has watched generations of the family grow up and whose presence in the workshop brings both joy and nostalgia.(24:35) Ever wondered how these extraordinary flowers are made? Adam walks us through the intricate, all-handcrafted process—an art form that is as meticulous as it is beautiful.(35:42) How long does it take to create a custom flower? The answer depends on many factors. A rush order can be completed in 24 hours, but Adam explains why speed isn't always the best approach.(36:54) In the early 1900s, there were hundreds of artificial flower companies in New York City. Why is M&S Schmalberg the only one left standing? Adam attributes it to luck, magic, and an unbreakable work ethic. He also reminisces about the days when “the streets were alive” with manufacturers like his.(45:20) Adam shares stories of unique custom orders, including how their flowers made it onto Bridgerton.(49:55) Can you recognize a Schmalberg flower when you see one? Probably not—but Adam tells you where to look.(51:28) The phone call they received in 2016 that changed everything—plus a few other game-changing moments that have shaped the company's future.(55:30) What's next for Adam and M&S Schmalberg? What's his vision for the future?(57:10) Is there a question Adam wishes he had been asked? Not really—but he again extends an open invitation for anyone who wants to visit and experience the magic firsthand.(59:15) Want to connect with Adam? To her 769,000 Instagram followers, fitness entrepreneur-turned-brand founder Amanda Kloots feels like a friend who just happens to sometimes star in movies or host TV shows — she wrapped her gig on CBS's "The Talk" when the show ended last year and hosts "Live From The Other Side" on Netflix. Some of her fans have been following her journey since she started teaching fitness classes nearly a decade ago, in 2016. That was when she first transitioned out of her previous career as a Radio City Rockette and Broadway dancer and started building her fitness business, Amanda Kloots Fitness. Earlier this month, Kloots launched Proper, a wellness brand that debuted with five powder supplements. It is the seventh brand to launch in partnership with Ben Bennett's incubator, The Center — its other brands include Naturium, which exited to E.l.f. Beauty at the end of 2023. Bennett and Kloots are striving to create products that appeal to the "everyday woman who comes to my classes, who is really just looking for something to keep her happy and to make her feel her best," Kloots said on this week's episode of the Glossy Beauty Podcast. Proper's first five products include the greens powder Daily Boost, Metabolism + Energy Boost, Digestion + Bloat Relief, Immune Support, and Calming Aid. Each is $28 and, for now, exclusively available direct-to-consumer. And they're brightly colored to represent the idea of "drinking the rainbow," Kloots said. On this week's episode of The Glossy Beauty Podcast, Kloots discusses how the early days of the boutique fitness boom made her social media savvy, what business lessons she learned from past ventures and collaborations, and what's next for Proper.

The Rockettes are America's best known dance troupe — and a staple of the holiday season — but you may not know the origin of this iconic New York City symbol. For one, they're not even from the Big Apple!Formerly the Missouri Rockets, the dancers and their famed choreographer Russell Markert were noticed by theater impresario Samuel Rothafel, who installed them first as his theater The Roxy, then at one of the largest theaters in the world — Radio City Music Hall. The life of a Rockettes dancer was glamorous, but grueling; for many decades dancing not in isolated shows, but before the screenings of movies, several times a day, a different program each week. There was a very, very specific look to the Rockettes, a look that changed — and that was forced to change by cultural shifts — over the decades. This show is dedicated to the many thousands of women who have shuffled and kicked with the Rockettes over their many decades of entertainment, on the stage, the picket line or the Super Bowl halftime show. This show is a re-edited and remastered version of our 2014 show with a new introduction -- in honor of the upcoming 100th anniversary celebration of the dance troupe which would become the Rockettes.Join us on Patreon for extra podcasts and lots of other goodiesShare your love of the city's history with a Bowery Boys Walks gift certificate! Good morning from Pharma and Biotech Daily, the podcast that gives you only what's important to hear in the Pharma and Biotech world. Today's episode covers a range of news and developments in the industry. Let's get started.## Evelo Biosciences shuts down after clinical setbackFlagship-backed microbiome biotech company Evelo Biosciences is shutting down after facing a clinical setback and laying off staff. The company, which focused on developing microbiome-based therapies, was unable to find a viable alternative to its closure. This news comes as several biotech M&A deals are being announced, although fewer oncology deals have been made this year compared to previous years.## Freeline agrees to take-private deal with SynconaGene therapy company Freeline has agreed to a take-private deal with Syncona after making cuts. This acquisition adds to the string of bargain buyouts and reverse mergers in the gene therapy sector. Meanwhile, fewer biotech companies are going public this year, with only three IPOs taking place in the third quarter. However, there are still many startups waiting in the queue.## Medtronic CEO downplays impact of obesity drugs The CEO of Medtronic, Geoff Martha, downplays the impact of obesity drugs on procedures and devices. Despite the surging demand for GLP-1 agonists, Martha argues that the hit to medtech firms like Medtronic will be minimal.## Index Pharmaceuticals discontinues trial for cobitolimodIndex Pharmaceuticals has decided to discontinue a Phase 3 trial for cobitolimod in ulcerative colitis following a negative review by an independent data monitoring committee. Digital tools can play a crucial role in supporting patients in their search for specialists and care. These tools can narrow down the initial search, identify healthcare professionals with the required expertise, and empower patients through tailored resources.## Google and NBCU offer behind-the-scenes look at Macy's Thanksgiving Day ParadeGoogle and NBCU have partnered to offer a behind-the-scenes look at the Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade through custom ads. The ads feature the Radio City Rockettes and showcase the AI-powered features of Google's Pixel 8 smartphone. The slow adoption of sustainability standards among agencies and production companies is having a negative impact on the entire marketing communications supply chain.## Gene editing, mRNA, and cell therapies promise new medicinesThe text discusses the progress in gene editing, mRNA, and cell therapies, highlighting their potential to revolutionize medicine. The giant Stephen Miller balloon has been cancelled, however. Steve KG Bannon says, No! You're the fascists! Donald Trump adds that to the list of vermin he will need to annihilate. The press wonder what that means for “Trump vs. Biden ‘24” ™ The Wisconsin supreme court may strike down legislative maps to end Republican dominance. Democrats have made gains in many elections this year. Republicans will need to move quickly to make none of that matter. President Joe Biden is thankful for the success of the US-lead deal to release 50 hostages from Hamas. No matter how many are backing the deal, it isn't over until those hostages are back home. Meanwhile, their families continue to wait. Of course, it is not as simple as that. The families of the hostages are spurring anger for caring about their families too much. Here and around the world the “kidnapped” poster feuds rage on. Iranians have become desensitized to the question of Palestine.

What began as a childhood curiosity became a budding career,  photographing some of the worlds best ballet dancers. Gene attributes his introduction to the world of ballet to his wife through her involvement with ABT (American Ballet Theater). His informal conversation with renowned ballerina, Julie Kent, piqued his interest in the art form and then began to attend more ballet performances. Around that same time, Gene was given permission to photograph performances of ABT's studio company and after two years was invited to photograph the main company, which led to other requests for similar work. His images have appeared New York Times, Washington Post, Wall Street Journal and all the major dance publications both here and abroad. In March 2020, Gene retired from studio photography and is currently working on his first book in collaboration with retired ballerina and dance writer, Gavin Larsen. As Boss Moms, we go through many challenges that lead to us forgetting to take care of ourselves. The truth is, we're the best version of ourselves and moms and business owners when we dedicate some time to focusing on ourselves.   Why is the self-care component so important, and how does it tie in with mental health? How do we learn and transition into the self-care component?   In this episode, the founder and owner of AK! Fitness brand Amanda Kloots joins me to talk about the life challenges a Boss Mom faces, how to take back control and why self-care is not selfish.   I believe that I am the best version of myself as a mom when I feel fulfilled in myself too. -Amanda Kloots   3 Things You'll Learn in This Episode   - Leveraging your time How can we leverage our time properly so we can spend it with our family and to take care of ourselves?   - Growing your business with self-care in mind Can we scale our businesses so it can run by itself?   - Find your own outlet As Boss Moms, it can be difficult to find our own outlets, how do we find what fills our cups?   Guest Bio   An Ohio native, Amanda brings her infectious and inspirational attitude to everything that she does. A former Broadway dancer and Radio City Rockette, Amanda performed on a variety of stage, film and tv productions for over seventeen years. Amanda's love of dance and fitness led her to work and lead classes at one of New York's premiere fitness studios with regularly sold out classes teaching upwards of 12 hours a day. Amanda developed the jump rope method after years of trying different ways to stay in great shape. She fell in love with the jump rope after discovering it's the quickest, most effective way to get a full body workout, and spent years creating ways to use it for more than just jumping. In 2016, Amanda decided to focus full time on her AK! Fitness brand – her signature classes featured jump ropes and dance mixed with cross training to create a unique full body workout. In addition to the AK! Fitness brand, Amanda and her sister Anna launched the apparel company Hooray For® that celebrates positivity and donates proceeds to non-profit organizations worldwide. Amanda's first memoir, co-written with her sister, was released in June 2021 and is set to become a movie. The title, “Live Your Life”, tells of her ninety five day struggle and love story with her husband Nick Cordero. Most recently, Amanda wrote, executive produced, and starred in the CBS holiday movie “Fit for Christmas” in December 2022. Kloots currently resides in Los Angeles with her son, Elvis. How well can you keep your spirits up in the face of hardship?   Today we talk with Amanda Kloots, a ray of sunshine, former Broadway Dancer and Radio City Rockette, fitness instructor, and author who encourages people to live their lives to the fullest.   Amanda's late husband, Nick, died in 2020 from Covid and co-infections. Listen in to hear all about his death and legacy, as well as how she stayed positive in the face of death, and parenting after loss. Topics We Discuss:   [2:30] Amanda's grief and loss experience losing her husband. He got sick during the pandemic and then caught hospital infections that ultimately took over him 95 days later.   [5:39] How Amanda's positivity kept her going even when doctors told her on multiple occasions that her husband was going to die in an hour.   [10:14] The power of love. Amanda would sing, dance, and encourage her husband whenever she was able to see him and she could tell it boosted his spirits.   [12:54] Nick's legacy. His story caught the world's attention because he fought for so long to make sure Amanda and their son Elvis would be okay. Amanda and Elvis were able to move into a new home. She and Nick's mom became very close, and Nick died a rock star like he always wanted to be.   [15:52] Amanda's family support. Her siblings, especially her brother, really stepped up to help her and take care of her and Elvis after Nick died. It impacted their familial relationships deeply.   [19:10] Signs, synchronicities, Biblical ties, and beliefs. Milestones of his illness coincided with Biblical days like Easter weekend. Nick's energy swept over Elvis on a few occasions. Amanda talks to him and dreams about him. Mediums have described Nick's energy field to Amanda and it's been the same as what she's seen.   [27:02] Parenting a toddler who lost a parent. Amanda tries to keep Nick present in their lives by talking about him with Elvis. Her new children's book is a great tool to talk to kids about death and loss. She is sure that Elvis dreams about Nick and encourages others to go to sleep intending to see their loved one.   [32:29] Amanda's grief journey. Losing a spouse is a lifelong journey, especially when you are left to parent a child you once shared. Her philosophy has become to just do and go for things because you never know what could happen.   [34:39] Nick's song “Live Your Life”. Amanda helped him write the lyrics because he couldn't figure it out on his own. It took on a whole new meaning after he died. ***********************************************   SUPPORT DR. Laura CasselmanTake a walk with me down Fascination Street as I get to know Laura Casselman. Laura had a dream at the age of 3 to become a Radio City Rockette. Fast forward 20 years, and a lot of hard work.... SHE DID IT! In this episode we chat about how this was even possible, and what she decided to do after her Rockette career ended. Laura is currently the CEO of JVZoo, co-founder of VidaStreet, and co-founder of Hestla Trades. She explains what all of these entities are, and what they do. Of course, we discuss Laura's new book Trust Your Increments: How Small, Consistent Steps Can Lead to Massive Success. Along the way, we discuss what it is like for women in the workforce, and what both men & women can do to help make things a little more equal in that area. Laura shares the absolute worst job-related story I have ever heard, and we talk about how to move on from something like that. She shares some tips on how to reframe some of life's jealous moments into some of life's inspirational ones. Plus, Laura explains the difference between 'Work / Life Balance" and "Work / Life Harmony".This show is part of the Spreaker Prime Network, if you are interested in advertising on this podcast, contact us at https://www.spreaker.com/show/4068452/advertisement

In 2011 I started a business as a stylist. I'd moved to New York City for my career in theater after a Broadway tour, Radio City Rockettes, and all that jazz.   [The below timeline is not covered in the episode and included here for backstory.]   In 2014 a friend who worked at a top publisher told me that my style course, “had to be a book.” She'd told everyone in her office my principles and they were using them daily–women needed this. I told her that sounded like a lot of work for very little money. We were both right.   In 2016 I began writing the book in fits and starts, always “let's just get through one more launch, just a little more income so we aren't burned out and *then* I'll write the book.”   By 2020 I decided *then* was never going to come. I had to take the leap. I hired a book coach and in 2021 they introduced me to a top agent. My book went to auction and my dream was coming true.   For a year I absolutely adored the writing process (which most authors bemoan) yet was traumatized by the publishing process (which I had never heard anyone mention–as explained in the episode now I know why.) One year later, and it was all for nothing.   Worse, it almost cost me everything.   This is part 2 of 3 in sharing that story. Please begin with last week's Part 1: Silent vs Silenced.    This is a story of creative and financial heartbreak, shared to protect others from it.    It's the episodes I have wish I had heard from just one person, to have any idea what I was risking when I decided 7 years ago that maybe I would in fact like to write a book.   Links mentioned in this episode: March 2021 texts about securing literary agents April 2021 video explaining what that validation meant + the respect I instantly attached to them (Instagram is awkward for long videos so you can also listen on YouTube) June 2021 official author celebration The first time I “saw” my book in my local bookstore. (Wild this was so long ago I was still wearing a mask for everyday errands.) Want to learn how I survived this season without burning out? Join the wait list for new free resources coming this summer.   If you know any author, creative, or aspiring this could bless, please share it with them and if you do so on Instagram tag me @HilaryRushford so I can thank you for doing what I wish someone had done for me.   If you're an author and want to share your experience after listening to next week's final episode (I understand the desire to share with someone who can relate), DM above or write books@deanstreetsociety.com. All correspondence will of course remain anonymous..
