Can fashion transform reality, or is it more a question of how the real world influences fashion? Dior's response lies in a deeply feminist collection, inspired by the Swinging Sixties, when Marc Bohan was at the helm of the label. South African brand Maxhosa resurrects ancient Xhosa motifs. Mossi, through his clothes and fashion school in the eastern Paris suburbs, hopes to give disenfranchised young people a dream to aim for. All are searching for the holy grail: fashion that's both beautiful and meaningful.
At the campus of the French Fashion Institute, 27 design students from 13 different countries are gearing up to present their year's work before a highly influential audience. The stakes are high: these students are poised to compete with fellow graduates from the prestigious Central Saint Martins school in London. But there's no denying that France still plays an outsized role on the international stage when it comes to fashion, as evidenced by the likes of designers Weinsanto, Pressiat and Alain Paul. FRANCE 24 went to check out their ready-to-wear shows.
Stella McCartney, Marine Serre and Lilia Litkovska are three designers united in their belief that fashion, a notoriously polluting industry that often encourages excessive consumption, can itself be part of the solution. Through their latest ready-to-wear collections for next autumn and winter they showcase more sustainable modes of production, and advocate for fashion that has both style and heart. FRANCE 24 went to check out their Paris shows.
Stella McCartney, Laurence Airline, Vaillant Studio and Litkovska are four fashion labels founded and run by women. Inspired by a desire to always strive for better, these designers propose solutions to the biggest challenges facing fashion today – everything from overconsumption and textile pollution to convoluted supply chains. All four women know that, at its best, fashion can also be used as a weapon for good. FRANCE 24 went to meet them and check out their latest ready-to-wear shows in Paris.

Japanese stylists have been making their mark on the Paris fashion scene since the 1980s, and continue to prove their mastery of the art of merging form and movement. Yohji Yamamoto, Yusuke Takahashi for CFCL, Maiko Kurogouchi and Satoshi Kondo for Issey Miyake – all these designers have a knack for taking the pulse of the planet, and, in turn, proposing new ways of dressing. We went to meet them in this edition of Fashion.

In this edition we meet three up-and-coming fashion designers. Victor Weinsanto studied fashion in Paris before going on to work with Jean-Paul Gaultier. He later went on to found his own exuberant label, this year inviting his drag queen friends to model his latest collection. Meanwhile, Kevin Germanier wants to break with the bad habits of the past: he loves upcycling and breathing new life into old fabric. For Alain Paul, meanwhile, fashion is the work of marrying choreography and clothing to the human body.
"Woman is an active subject of the historical process and cannot be confined to being the object of desire of patriarchy." That was the strident slogan written in letters on the wall of Dior's recent show, where creative director Maria Grazia Chiuri leant into the historically fraught image of the witch. The feminist fight was also at the heart of the offering from Valériane Venance's young label Indépendantes de Cœur, where a cage motif was central. The model within is entirely naked, but simultaneously protected.

In 2010, Ramy Brook Sharp was looking for the perfect, sexy top to pair with her vast collection of jeans - a piece that would pair beautifully with her wide assortment of jewelry and stand the test of time, all at a contemporary price point. In her many attempts to find what she was looking for, Ramy quickly recognized a gap in the fashion space and decided to design her own; alas, the Ramy Brook brand was born. Within six months of starting Ramy Brook and hosting trunk shows around town, Sharp's designs were picked up at Bergdorf Goodman and the rest was history. Through Ramy's signature use of silk fabrics, lively colors, and sophisticated silhouettes, the collection is meant to be a day-to-night solution in a woman's wardrobe. Ramy's designs are inspired by the beautiful, strong women she has admired through her life who demand a timeless, elegant and versatile wardrobe. Her clothing evokes an uplifting, happy, and playful attitude, all while highlighting the sexiness and confidence of the woman who wears it. Ramy Brook is now sold in more than 250 boutiques nationwide, including the Ramy Brook flagship store on Madison Avenue and ramybrook.com. The brand can also be found in retailers worldwide, including Saks Fifth Avenue, Nordstrom, Bergdorf Goodman, Bloomingdale's and Neiman Marcus. Ramy lives in New York City with her husband Rob, two sons Kyle and Dylan, daughter Stevie, and Goldendoodle Baxter. Digital Ambassador and sewing pro Pamela Howard shares fitting and alterations tips, along with her love of pressing and knit garments.
All fashion designers have one thing in common: whatever the challenges, however much the odds appear stacked against them, they find a way to keep working. Yohji Yamamoto, having recently lost two close family members, uses his anger as the force behind a period of contemplation. Meanwhile, Ukrainian designers Svitlana Bevza and Lilia Litkovska ensure they find ways to express themselves through clothes, despite living in a country at war.
France's Victor Weinsanto, Vincent Pressiat and Alice Vaillant encapsulate a new generation of boundless energy and talent; of fashion designers determined to disrupt the sartorial status quo. Not only do they embrace the latest couture innovations, they're also firmly plugged into the zeitgeist – a desire to create fashion that's more responsible, more daring and more free. FRANCE 24 takes a closer look.
The latest ready-to-wear collections in Paris are proof that fashion is art in its own right: mere adornment making way for extraordinary craftsmanship, show after show. At Dior, Maria Grazia Chiuri celebrates the 1950s, specifically the feminism encapsulated by Catherine Dior, Edith Piaf and Juliette Greco. Stella McCartney, meanwhile, offers an equestrian treat, employing everything from mushroom fibres to recycled food waste in her quest for fashion that's not only beautiful, but responsible. FRANCE 24 takes you to the catwalks.
The negative consequences of fast fashion on the planet are multiple. Worldwide, an average of 130 billion garments are consumed per year. This colossal amount has immediate effects on the environment: 1.2 billion tonnes of greenhouse gases are emitted each year by the textile sector (an even greater volume than international flights and marine traffic combined.)* By creating her brand, Patine, Charlotte Dereux wanted to remedy this phenomenon and above all, not duplicate the traditional operation of fast fashion brands to manufacture high volumes of clothing without worrying about their environmental impact and the disposal of stocks. With Patine, quality is preferred to quantity. Did you know that? It would take us 13 years to drink the amount of water needed to make a t shirt and cotton jeans*. At Patine, a B Corp company, Charlotte explains that the steps in the clothing manufacturing process are rigorously studied and chosen according to their environmental impact. The brand's very first piece in 2017, the “Willy” t-shirt, is made of 40% recycled cotton, which allows a much lower volume of water used. In this episode of On the Way, Charlotte tells us about her journey to the creation of her eco-responsible and feelgood ready-to-wear brand, in particular about how it works and how important it is for her to develop the “Patine community”. Very good listening! *According a study published by Oxfam France.

Can ready-to-wear collections help us answer key questions about who we are and how we should live? On exiting the latest Rick Owens show, the answer from Montreal-based fashion duo Matières Fécales was a resolute "yes". Fashion can imbue life with meaning, even if it's merely an aesthetic project, as with American label Enfants Riches Déprimés. Meanwhile, after running his label Xuly Bët for 30 years, Lamine Kouyaté laments that more has not changed in the world since he set out to design.
If there was one word to describe the latest round of ready-to-wear offerings for summer 2023, it would be freedom, a desire to liberate bodies – and minds – from all forms of restraint. Japanese designer Yohji Yamamoto rejects any fashion that treats women like dolls rather than people, while his compatriot Hidenori Kumakiri reimagines military uniforms and French designer Mossi Traoré finds inspiration in binmen's uniforms. Meanwhile, French stalwart Isabelle Marant does what she's always done, championing fashion that transcends space and time.
Like it or not, people make snap judgments about your appearance. How can you use this tendency to your advantage for your personal brand? My guests today use their specialized knowledge to help professionals make powerful first impressions about their personal brands without needing to say a word. Some people might consider personal style to be an expression of vanity. This mom-and-daughter duo debunks that theory by diving into the science of first impressions, color theory, and visual communication. The human mind loves to categorize and make quick decisions. Unfortunately, this process is not always accurate. Snap judgments may not be fair, but they happen all the time. That is why it's so critical to understand the non-verbal statements we make by what we wear. By understanding how style communicates your values, you can better align your appearance with your personal brand to make your messaging congruent. Understanding the messages of a stiff white collar or a relaxed sweater can mean the difference between establishing authority, trust, or neither.About the Guests:Alison is a national style and image consultant with clients across the country. Misbah Mitha has run a successful business as a fashion designer for 33 years. The pandemic was the first time where she sat with no work. A friend and neighbour, who was well aware of her cooking skills, bumped into her during his walk one evening. He suggested that she become a home chef as that was the need of the hour. Her husband, a retired banker, was sceptical at first. That made Misbah even more determined! She discussed the idea with her school friends. All fans of her cooking. One suggested brand names for her. Another chose the final one: Tadka Tales. The customers of her fashion business were the early adopters of her cooking. As life comes back to near normal, Misbah's fashion business took off again. Her home chef business is thriving too and she now runs two businesses. The need of a friend's son who had gone to Amsterdam to study, made Misbah launch dehydrated gravies and that's where her future focus is. Though she knows she can never stop making her butter chicken, white chicken pulao, chicken mayo sandwiches and other crowd favourites. Her husband? He became her biggest supporter once she decided to embark on this journey and is very happy to be her chief taster. This year's ready-to-wear winter collections are all about love and seduction: the delicate balance between what's shown and what isn't. Vaquera has found inspiration in the iconic black latex jumpsuit worn by Maggie Cheung in the 1996 film "Irma Vep" directed by Olivier Assayas. Victor Weinsanto, meanwhile, showcases an extravagant corset-and-cape look for "Emily in Paris" star Philippine Leroy-Beaulieu. Finally, the Love Brings Love exhibition offers a moving homage to late iconic designer Alber Elbaz.

Back in Paris, we take a look at the latest offerings from Yohji Yamamoto and Christelle Kocher, who both place diversity and cultural exchanges at the heart of their work.

With war raging in Ukraine, it's not easy to know how to speak about fashion – if at all. The best answer is to face the paradox. Thanks to the French Federation for Haute Couture and Fashion, Ukrainian designer Lilia Litovskaya is now safe in Paris. At Balenciaga, Demna Gvasalia, who fled a Kremlin-backed civil war in Georgia in 1993, offers up a hostile backdrop for his collection. Labels Marine Serrre, Atlein, Benmoyal and Germanier, meanwhile, are championing freedom of expression with their eco-friendly offerings.
War may have broken out in Europe, but the world of fashion has decided that the show – that is, next winter's ready-to-wear Fashion Week – must go on. Financial interests no doubt played a large part in that decision, but so too did the conviction that now isn't the time to be stifling artistic expression. For the occasion, Dior takes advantage of technological innovation, Caribbean duo Botter defend coral reefs and the French Institute of Fashion encourages its students to embrace virtual reality.
