The idea for this episode was sparked by the quote"Surround Yourself With Women Who Would Mention Your Name in a Room Full of Opportunities" A lot of times, especially as entrepreneurs, solopreneurs, mompreneurs, we get caught up in the comparison game and it can be super discouraging and disheartening. As we wrap up 2021 on the homestretch of Q4 - we can look at the numbers and feel like we haven't done as well or been as successful as others who *seem* to be crushing it across the board. This episode is a sort of exposé of the reality behind the Smoke & Mirrors of Social Media and why having a ton of followers doesn't always mean what you think.Michelle shares some of her experiences dealing with women, some good, some not so good, why healthy competition is normal and good for us, but why it's important to see the signs when someone is a one-way street and not willing to give back to help you in return. You know them; everything is all about them, big ego, ME ME ME ME, they talk about supporting other women but in the end, are self-serving and opportunistic. She shares insights from a recent article in the New York Times by Elizabeth Harris: "Millions of Followers? For Book Sales, ‘It's Unreliable". The article cites the example of Billie Eilish and why having a huge social media following doesn't necessarily = sales, In many cases, celebrity books are huge flops. The article goes on to explain that perhaps the books don't provide anything beyond what they've already put on Instagram (the same old story kind of thing). It could be that the followers (the ones who aren't bots, or paid for) aren't terribly engaged with what they post to begin with.Crucially, executives say, there is also an increasing awareness in the industry about the difference between the number of followers and how engaged they really are. (Check the likes and comments; they're often from the same group of people with little authentic dialogue or engagement that spurs conversation in the thread - often just a bunch of cheerleading quotes from people in their pod.)Michelle shares how she's experienced this first-hand with this podcast. Ironically, some of the most downloaded episodes were guests who did NOT have a large social following, and the episodes with others with hundreds of thousands of followers were among the least downloaded. The episodes where the guest spoke on fresh topics and shared organic content had much further reach, engagement and response than others that were repeating the same story that they'd told on every other podcast interview they'd done. There's a big difference between repurposing content and regurgitating it; the first is a smart marketing tactic, the latter can come across as a bad marketing pitch in a world where we are constantly inundated with ads and Rule of 7 content that is over-saturated and a turn-off to our information overloaded brains. She shares the experience of attending a LinkedIn Live co-hosted by a handful of *big name influencers* on the platform with a combined following of around 500,000 - less than half of 1% of their audience showed up for the event. Not what you'd expect, and that's exactly the point; smoke and mirrors.Rather than get caught up in the comparison game, focus on examining your year, your efforts, your work, your goals and tactics and celebrate YOUR growth, regardless of how small or insignificant it may seem to others! We did just that and here's what we found: a 113% increase in newsletter subscribers,115% increase in visitors to our website, 192% increase on social media, and a 487% increase in podcast downloads! Thank you ALL for your support - we appreciate each and every one of you!Thank you for listening! Please leave a rating & review on Apple Podcasts. Joe Mullings is one of the top minds and visionaries in talent search, specifically in the world of med-tech, who has revolutionized story-telling as a means to draw top talent to top organizations; Google & Johnson & Johnson were his first clients. The question he strives to answer for everyone seeking a career change or new role is "IF I go to work for this company, WHO will I become?"Joe believes that every individual should evaluate four things when considering a new opportunity: Market, Product/Service, Leadership & Mission and he breaks it all down in this episode. We talk about the value of surrounding ourselves with high-value people and building our network around them and the power that holds for us, the importance of finding real value and fulfillment in our work and how critical that is for staying power, and why mission and LIVING UP TO IT is critical for leaders - it only takes a few bad seeds in an otherwise great organization to bring it to it's knees if it's not nipped in the bud.We also deep dive into over-legislation as a result of the Me-Too Movement and it's impact on mentorship for women who are often already at a career disadvantage because of starting families and everything that entails, and why removing mentorships for women is causing females to miss out on opportunities, relationships, and important networking that can change the path of their career, bringing more female leaders to the forefront of U.S. companies. (Click here to read his article on this important topic.)Joe shares a valid and interesting perspective on defining, or attempting to define, bullying and toxicity in the workplace and how critical it is to understand the difference between attacking a problem vs. a person and why the latter is never acceptable. We also talk about his venture into the world of video & television production and how Artificial Intelligence, Robotics and Tech will affect our future world of work, and why staying ahead of tech and being forward-thinking, flexible, continually learning and upskilling and being willing to reinvent ourselves will be critical to staying relevant, particularly for those who are subject to the negative impact of ageism in the workplace.Joe also shares what I feel is one of the most profound and thought-provoking answers to my closing question for all of my guests: As a leader, what quality of a gentleman/woman do you feel is most important to emulate and why? There's definitely a dash of 007 meets Thomas Crown in Joe Mullings . . . but he's not acting.Thank you for listening! Please leave a rating & review on Apple Podcasts. Today was yet another milestone in my broadcasting journey - I hosted my first ever LinkedIn Livestream Guest! My guest is Steve Turner, founder of Bring Back the Trades Inc, a New Hampshire nonprofit organization which believes that skilled trades is a worthy option for students. Its primary mission is to equip students who are pursuing post-secondary education to acquire the knowledge of a professional trade through community engagement and education. They are dedicated to promoting and educating the public to the need for skilled trades professionals. We discussed the serious need for skilled tradesmen, a need that existed before the pandemic but has now reached critical levels, how we need to re-write the narrative and remove stigmas associated with vocational educations and skilled trade schools, what needs to change to make women feel welcome & safe in the trades, and what Steve is doing to try to help bridge the gap and support students who choose a trades based career and education vs. the traditional college route. Visit his website to learn how to apply for his scholarship program (open to all trade school students in the US) and to become a corporate sponsor for this fast-growing start-up, Bring Back The Trades!YOUR HOST: Michelle HorlbogenHER MISSION: To foster civility, respect, and integrity (with a dash of sartorial elegance) in the boardroom and beyond.HER STORY: Two days after reporting ethical concerns to her employer, Michelle was fired. For today's episode, I interviewed 2X author Heather Monahan. Heather's new book, "Overcome Your Villains", published by Harper Collins Leadership, is launching this month (November 2021). I invited Heather on the show to share her inspiring story from making it to the C-Suite, to being fired by a workplace villain, to her successful career as an entrepreneur and to chat about her new book.Heather talks about how she launched her personal brand about five years ago, (which is likely one of the reasons she was fired, as there were a few envious villains at work who resented her success with her brand), and how she was able to leverage that platform she had created for herself after she was fired. Heather wrote and self-published her first book "Confidence Creator" just five months after she was fired, or, as she would say, after SHE fired HER villain. Heather talks about what she's learned from both male & female mentors in her career, the importance of trusting you gut, not only in business, but in our personal lives, as well as the experience and knowledge she's gained both as a self-published author and a traditionally published one.For anyone who purchases her new book during pre-sale, Heather is offering an add-on gift bundle valued at $500.00 for FREE. In this episode, Melanie shares how, as VP of Marketing for a luxury automotive group, she launched her idea to leverage social media, not just as a company, but for the personal brands of those on the sales team, by creating and hosting a Social Media Workshop to provide the tools, know-how and ideas they would need to create their own social media brand. After struggling with buy-in from the team, Melanie found the two main reasons professionals are often hesitant to create a personal presence on social: 1.) Fear and 2.) Lack of know-how & confidence. In true leadership style, Melanie decided to walk the talk and set out on her own personal brand journey in social media marketing to be an example for and encouragement to her team. Then the pandemic hit and 90% of the staff at her dealership were laid off. That was when Melanie decided she needed to go all-in on her personal brand, so that, in the event that she, too, found herself unemployed, she would have a professional digital footprint and brand, not just in her industry, but as a powerful presence on platforms like LinkedIn. Melanie employed her three critical pillars: having a strategy, providing value-added content, and being consistent. It paid off - in about a year, she went from 3,000 followers to 89,000! She keeps it real by admitting the amount of work and time involved (it's a full-time job) and that success doesn't happen overnight; you have to commit to the long-haul, create a routine and be fully committed to reap the benefits.Melanie shares the struggles many of us faced when the pandemic hit - of becoming a remote worker overnight, with the additional stress of having to manage remote learning for her two young daughters. She decided early on to channel her efforts toward building the narrative she wanted told about herself online (which she reminds us is within our power to do as well), as a strong, independent woman and mother, and to be an example to her daughter's as she forged her way down that new path of building her personal brand, which is now her professional one as well. Melanie also used that unique time with her daughter's to write and publish her children's book, a project they were closely involved with from start to finish. The biggest leap of faith and most important risk Melanie took during the pandemic was to leave her corporate role and, with the support of those closest to her, launch her company Melanie Borden, LLC. She shares how she had wanted to do so seven years ago, but multiple factors caused that plan to go awry. When I asked her what the incredibly successful Melanie would tell her 18 year-old self, she replied "Trust your gut!". I couldn't agree more.Melanie's goal is to help others avoid the "Trial and Terror" experience she had in navigating social media as a newbie by offering her highly successful strategies and services. "This voice in my head keeps saying "Keep Going, Do NOT give up"...I'm very purpose driven, and I know that I DO have a purpose...and I cannot give up on my life's...on the reason I'm here. And THAT is to change stereotypes and to break through, and to get women in marketing and in advertising for the big tool companies." ~ Jennifer ClineJennifer's story is truly one of tragedy to triumph as she overcame, not only heartbreaking loss on a personal level, but sabotage, harassment and workplace bullying, resulting in the loss of her beloved professional career.Jennifer shares the very personal story of how, 13 years ago, on her young son's birthday, she lost her husband in a horrible car accident, leaving her broken-hearted, with two young children to raise and a 200 year old farmhouse that had been in her husband's family for generations, but was in desperate need of major repairs and renovations. Jennifer says it was her "sink or swim" moment and, despite being advised to tear it down and start over, she committed to restoring the family's beloved farmhouse as a tribute to and in memory of her late husband, honoring the dream they had shared before his untimely death.Jennifer initially began her professional career as a paralegal and eventually found herself working at the prosecutor's office in a neighboring county as the grand jury coordinator, which she absolutely loved and excelled at. And that was where the problems began. Enter the envious, jealous, not-so-liked, not-so-talented, not-so-beautiful, female boss & her cronies. What Jennifer shares in this interview about her workplace abuse experience has all the makings of a Netflix Miniseries or a Lifetime Movie...and once you listen you will agree that truth is often stranger than fiction. Nepotism, hiring friends unqualified for senior level roles, abuse of power (which kept the true story out of the media), politics at their worse, bizarre sexual harassment, stalking social media & harassing her friends, spying on her in her office, micromanaging, prying her about her romantic life, belittling her in front of her colleagues, attorney's falsifying their identity to try to get confidential information, and eventually covering up recordings and investigations to protect themselves from the fall-out, leaving Jennifer no other option than to run for her life from that toxic workplace. BUT, as a widowed single mother, it also meant leaving her security, livelihood, paycheck, insurance, 401K & medical benefits behind. This is the reality of workplace abuse going unchecked and the lack of accountability for those who look the other way and allow innocent people & children to suffer.Jennifer's story is a classic case of women bullying women in the workplace. While they initially encouraged Jennifer to build her personal brand and share her photos, saying it was great PR for the county, they soon became threatened by the success, popularity, support and attention she was getting, and went on a mission to shut her down. She experienced first-hand the "bystander effect" - when people who are your friends at work and do like you, but are terrified to lose their job so they remain silent. We talk about the grieving process over losing jobs we loved, and how similar it is to grieving the loss of a loved one in that you have to go through every stage or you risk getting stuck in a very bad place.Jennifer also shares what it's like to be a woman in the very male-dominated field of woodworking and how, unfortunately, it is still very much a "good 'old boy's club" mentality in the industry. We laughed at how we both were banned from Reddit on our first day and agreed that most times when a door closes, even if it might sting a bit, often means we're being saved from going down a road we might have regretted later on.On a lighter note, we talk about our shared love of thrift shopping and Jennifer shares some of her favorite finds - she has an evening gown collection that J-Lo would envy! We talk about why sustainability & re-purposing is so important in how we shop - another reason for my love of finding new homes for my vintage clothing collection.Jennifer also shares how she grew her social media following to 275,000 followers and how she found her niche, the incredible amount of time & work involved in maintaining social media platforms as an entrepreneur, and the many times she felt like giving up, and how she overcame those challenging days and feelings. While Jennifer is a huge fan of DeWalt products and wears a lot of black & yellow in her videos - they are still dragging their feet in becoming an official sponsor for this incredible influencer, so if anyone is looking to get their name, brand, product, or line in front of 275,000 people - GO GET THIS GIRL NOW while she's still accessible!Thank you for listening!

I learned she had a new book coming out about how to build your brand and knew she would be a fantastic guest for my listeners. Alison is a huge advocate for women supporting and cheerleading for other women, which is one of the many reasons I wanted to support her book launch and get her on the show!Alison shares what her journey was like as a first time author writing her book and the pros and cons of traditional vs. self vs. hybrid publishing. She shares great tips on how to maximize creating video content and how many CEO's just don't understand the amount of work and the importance of committing to using social media to successfully build your brand. She talks about the importance of authenticity and always being aware of the impact, both good and bad, that can result from what we post online and why organizations need to have a PR Crisis plan in place long before there's even an issue. We talk about the pressure in broadcast media, particularly on women, as to physical appearance, weight, and the expectation to maintain an almost impossible standard in an industry ripe with ageism. We talk about when the haters come (whenever you shine your light they are guaranteed to surface), how other women can be THE WORST in that regard, how social media has contributed to keyboard warriors and how to handle them when they come for you. We also talk about the stress of raising our daughters with so much social media around them and how to help them navigate the anxiety, bullying and exclusion that often comes with it.We are joining forces to create a fabulous giveaway as a way to thank my listeners and anyone who purchases Alison's book - be sure to visit Alison's website to purchase her new book & follow us both on Social Media to learn how to enter our giveaways!Thank you for listening!Don't forget to Rate, Review & Subscribe!ABOUT MY GUESTAlison Maloni is the CEO of Alison May Public Relations and contributor/anchor for NEWSMAX MEDIA, INC. How do you embrace change? Do you welcome it, or resent it? In today's episode, Michelle talks about her journey over the past two years with launching her website and podcast, all the ups and downs along the way, and why embracing when it's time to make a change is an important breakthrough.Michelle talks about the downside of staying immersed in negative conversations and content, especially when you're trying to heal or move past a negative life experience. This episode launches a new series on The Gentlewoman Boss Podcast entitled: "Superman Isn't Coming, Save Yourself".The content in this series is based around a survey our Founder, Michelle Horlbogen, conducted in the spring of 2021 about how prepared (or not) high school and college graduates felt to enter the workplace and deal with a potential toxic culture or workplace bullying. In episode one, Michelle shares a breakdown of the survey itself and the data it revealed. She also discusses the importance of a proactive approach to handling workplace conflict rather than a reactive one, and that the way to do that is to educate students about their employee rights, employment law and how it pertains to them, what workplace bullying is and clear examples of how to identify it, and the "true" role of HR in the workplace; but all of this BEFORE they go out into the workforce. We welcome your questions and comments; reach out to us via DM on social or through the contact form on our website.Thank you for listening!Don't forget to Rate, Review & Subscribe!YOUR HOST: Michelle HorlbogenHER MISSION: To foster civility, respect, and integrity (with a dash of sartorial elegance) in the boardroom and beyond.HER STORY: Two days after reporting ethical concerns to her employer, Michelle was fired. If you've ever felt alone in your journey to success (whatever that means to you) or that you don't have the support you wish you could have as you pursue your dream, this episode is for you!Today I was joined by the lovely and insightful Marion Weiler of Weiler International in a deep dive discussion about women in leadership and women as role models and mentors for other women in the workplace."Why Not Be That Person You Wish You Had?"~ Marion WeilerMarion shares her fascinating background of growing up in a very rural area in the mountains of Germany near Switzerland, where family roles were clearly defined and few women pursued personal careers aside from their beloved roles of homemaker and mother. It was an idyllic childhood, but Marion felt a calling to do more and followed her dream to the States where she saw there were many women doing both, and that inspired her to pursue her dream. On her journey, however, Marion soon found that not all women are happy to have a hard working, dedicated, conscientious, talented, and beautiful newcomer arrive on the scene. She shares how it was mostly male mentors and colleagues that guided her and encouraged her along her road to success, and how grateful she is for that support and mentorship.Marion shares the insights she has learned on her incredible journey (see her bio below) and the mission driven work she is doing now to change that dynamic and improve workplace cultures and create a new 2.0 in Leadership with special focus on Women in Leadership roles.Thank you for listening!Don't forget to Rate, Review & Subscribe!ABOUT MY GUEST - Marion WeilerMarion is a former Corporate Executive, growth strategist, leadership expert, global citizen and mom of four. (Click here to listen to part 1 of this interview)"The most important thing anyone can do for someone who has been harassed is to simply tell them "I believe you"."~ Lisa Bowman In part 2 of this interview, Lisa explains the role of the EEOC in her fight against sexual harassment and retaliation at United Way Worldwide and how filing a claim puts one under penalty of perjury; so to have the former CEO and the Boards doubt her complaint was essentially defamation. She discusses the sham internal investigation and how she was not even interviewed by the alleged non-biased law firm hired to conduct it and how she even feared for her personal safety when she came forward with her story. She shares how, after taking her story public, other women came out of the woodwork to share their story with her of also being targets of her harasser at previous roles before his work at United Way.We talk about the accountability of Boards of Directors in organizations and how failure to govern and carry out fiduciary duties can lead to litigation against directors and trustees and the backlash from corporate donors by withdrawing funding and sponsorships. Lisa shares her insights as to Gen. Z entering the workforce and demanding organizations take a stand against bad behavior both internally and externally.Lisa talks about the risks involved with speaking out to both one's personal and professional brand and how she has proceeded with full transparency in her search for her next role because there's no going back now. She talks about our responsibility to speak up and speak out to ensure our daughters are not subjected to sexual harassment and retaliation when they enter the workforce someday. 7 out of 10 women who reported harassment to the EEOC experienced retaliation and that is absolutely unacceptable, we have to do better for them.Lisa talks about the soft costs when an organization faces a PR crisis that are difficult to quantify but glaringly obvious: damage to reputation and brand and broken trust, especially in the nonprofit sector.Lisa shares her gratitude for the outpouring of support she has received thus far and, although a few haters have surfaced, she has felt nothing but overwhelmed and amazed by the support she's received."I worked for an organizationthat was supposed to betaking care of people...butthey wouldn't fight for me,they fought against me"~ Lisa BowmanThank you for listening!Don't forget to Rate, Review & Subscribe!ABOUT MY GUEST - Lisa BowmanLisa Bowman is a survivor of workplace sexual harassment who shows women how to find their courage to stand up and speak out. As a female leader, Lisa felt that to stay silent was to be complicit in condoning this and providing a path forward for this behavior to continue. In part one of this two-part interview, Lisa discusses the reasons she felt obligated to speak up about the unethical environment at United Way; an environment she says violated Title VII and had done so for years. Her concerns and complaints fell on the deaf ears of fellow C-Suite Executives and the Boards of Directors, and within a few months she was wrongfully terminated. Lisa speaks about the disappointment and sense of betrayal at the realization that other powerful women who could have stood up for her and the other women she was trying to protect (many of whom were women of color), chose instead to abandon ship, walk away with generous separation packages, and move on to senior roles in other organizations. She speaks to the failure of the Boards in governance, choosing, instead, to protect long-time CEO, Brian Gallagher. The sense of personal accountability to protect other women who would come after her led Lisa to file an EEOC claim and to take her story public. She found the support she received from Gretchen Carlson, one of the key players in the launch of the #metoomovement, to be a critical part in finding the strength to do so. HuffPost reporter Emily Peck told her story in a series of articles that ran starting in November 2020. Lisa, as a courtesy, requested that her attorney inform United Way that she was taking her story public. According to former colleagues, that courtesy was met with laughter and scornful remarks, to the effect that nothing would come of it, it's just one little article, it will blow over. What they didn't take seriously became a serious PR Crisis for United Way. Peck ran four more articles over the following months, and the story was picked up by Business Insider, ABC News, The Associated Press and The Nonprofit Times, to name just a few. The turmoil that ensued ended with Gallagher resigning on February 9, 2021.(Let that be a lesson...)Lisa also shares that, while interviewing reporters to take her story, one female reporter from a highly renowned national newspaper questioned the validity of her claim because Lisa had not been sexually assaulted in a physical way. She felt Lisa didn't really have a story. She elaborates on how damaging it is to a target when others marginalize or down-play their experience and how shocked she was at the reporter's glaring lack of understanding the language of Title VII. Lisa also shares some things she's learned in her experience with the EEOC and advice for anyone who thinks they are being harassed and how to protect themselves and take action before their job is at risk. She weighs in on the damages incurred by the abuse and betrayal she suffered at United Way. That it's not just financial damage, it's personal and emotional damage as well. Lisa speaks to how much she loved her job, knowing her work was helping people all over the globe, most of whom she would likely never meet, but felt indebted to. How her personal identity was so tightly woven into her career, when that was ripped away from her, she felt lost and didn't feel like she even knew who she was anymore. Ultimately, she decided she could either be a victim or a survivor, and I think we all know what this fearless, brave woman chose. "I am NOT an HR case. I am NOT an EEOC charge. I'm a PERSON. I'm a person that this organization just tossed aside, like garbage, because they didn't want to handle their problem, and instead, chose to make me the problem." ~ Lisa BowmanThank you for listening!Don't forget to Rate, Review & Subscribe! Super special guest today ~ and one for my followers that have a passion for sports and all things football!Matt starts off the episode quoting Mark Twain: "The two best days of your life are the day you're born and the day you find out why."He goes on to share how it was his time working as a coach at Penn State when the Jerry Sandusky scandal broke out that really prompted him to devote his life to protecting targets of any kind of bullying.Matt shares his very difficult childhood experiences of domestic abuse & bullying and power control abuses (his preferred term for childhood sexual abuse), all while his mother was facing stage 4 Melanoma. Her determination to pair him with the right counselor, as she fought for her own life, gave Matt a second chance and he went on to have an incredible highschool & Brown University athletic, academic and coaching experience. It was the intervention of, and eventual trust in that counselor and his football coaches that changed his life, and how that gift gave him the drive to pay it forward.Matt's four-part comparative breakdown of the stark differences between healthy workplace culture organizations vs. toxic workplace culture & bullying organizations (Focus, Structure, People, Leadership) is must-have information for anyone entering the work-force, questioning if they are in a toxic workplace and for everyone involved in shining a light on and exposing workplace abuse. This episode is jam-packed, so get out your notebook and get ready for some incredible insight from this gentle giant!Thank you for listening!Don't forget to Rate, Review & Subscribe!ABOUT MY GUEST - Matt PaknisMatt is a senior management consultant with six years of college football coaching and ten years of playing experience through five championship seasons whose focus is on lessening bullying in the workplace. October is National Bullying Prevention Month and October 18-24, 2020 is Freedom From Workplace Bullies week in the US. Please help us get the word out by sharing this episode with your network. I introduce this episode by telling my experience of how I “met” Janice (so far we've only met virtually, but I can't wait to actually be in her presence in real time!) and how her beautiful writing on her blog touched my heart and helped me on my way to healing from my workplace trauma. Janice shares how she lost her 16-year career in the aviation industry to workplace abuse and the toll it took on both her physical and mental health which led her to, wisely, seek help. Throughout the process, she began to feel a sense of social responsibility to help and educate others on workplace bullying. She began blogging as part of her treatment and therapy and named her blog “The Empowered Employee.” Janice talks about how, deep down, she has the heart of an employee – she loved working for an organization that had good values and the sense of family she felt. But after her workplace abuse experience, she realized that, as that loyal employee, she was at a great disadvantage and found herself very disempowered to handle the situation she encountered. By giving back, she experiences a three-fold reward: helping others, self-empowerment and healing. Janice shares the most recent statistics on workplace bullying and the toll it takes on target's health on every level. 80% of workplace bullying is not illegal in the U.S. and even targets who fall under a so-called “protected class” can have a difficult time proving workplace discrimination. We talk about the toll workplace abuse takes on the families of the targets and how even well-meaning friends and family do not understand the difficult journey we are on. How losing your job or career because of workplace abuse is like multiple deaths happening all at once, as well as the crushing hit to our belief systems, our belief in ourselves, the way we saw the world, our sense of safety, our sense of trust, the way we once operated in the world vs. how to navigate it going forward. Just as with a literal death and grieving, everyone's process is different, and we don't want to compare ourselves to others who seem further along on their journey to recovery. We talk about the incredible resources that are out there to help you on your road to recovery: Connecting with other targets who are brave survivors and become our tribe – through LinkedIn networking, websites, webinars, support groups and so much more! Janice talks about her work with The Workplace Bullying Institute, Dignity Together, Re-Define, The National Workplace Bullying Coalition and her new YouTube Talk Show with co-host Robin Barnette called “Two Targets Talk”. We talk about the importance of sharing our stories and being advocates, not just for ourselves to heal, but for our children to have safer workplaces and laws that protect them from the painful abuse we have been through. To be fore-warned is to be fore-armed! Janice also makes the very valid point that it's more of a liability for organizations to NOT address culture than it is for them to be proactive and set systems, processes and training in place to protect their employees and reputation. We wrap up the episode with Janice sharing what she feels is the most important quality of a gentlewoman to emulate today – you are going to love the one she chose! October is National bullying prevention month & this week, October 18-24 is Freedom From Workplace Bullies week in the US & Workplace Bullying Awareness Week in Canada. So in Part 1 of this Episode with Linda Crockett, I begin by sharing my personal workplace abuse experience in the nonprofit sector and how the Board of Directors failed miserably in its fiduciary responsibilities. I also share a fantastic experience I had recently on a virtual call with David Neal of The Eighth Mile Consulting in Brisbane, Australia.Linda starts out by sharing her personal journey as a Social Worker who was, unbeknownst to her, bullied for over twenty years in multiple sectors including healthcare, nonprofit & government. She explains that it felt like she had a dark cloud hanging over her, that every time she spoke up in defense of someone or something that wasn't right, her work life became more and more difficult until she finally moved on, only to have the same thing happen over and over again. How is that possible, you ask, for someone with 20 years of experience identifying abuse and helping others to cope with it, to not be able to see that she herself was a victim? Linda explains that painful revelation and how, in time, it sparked a fire in her soul to provide the help she couldn't find, at a time she sorely needed it, for others. She goes on to share the work she and others did to effect change in their province of Alberta, Canada to protect victims of workplace bullying. Linda chose, after careful deliberation, to launch her company on her own, rather than as a non-profit entity. She literally put her life savings on the line for a cause she felt needed a platform, despite severe financial cost to herself and her family. Her slogan is “All Voices Will Be Heard”Linda also defines what IS and what IS NOT considered workplace bullying and how to identify it. She also shares tips on what people should do if they suspect, or are confused, concerned, or fearful about reporting abuse. She answers the questions: What do targets experience? What do bystanders experience? She also shares a story about a perpetrator that she treated successfully – YES, there IS hope for some bullies!Thank you for listening!Don't forget to Rate, Review & Subscribe!ABOUT MY GUEST Linda CrockettLinda Crockett is a certified trauma therapist and social worker with 32 years of experience in her profession. After experiencing workplace bullying and receiving a diagnosis of PTSD as a result, she discovered there were no resources available to people suffering from this workplace abuse. Linda then completed her master's degree specializing in this area and became a longstanding member of the International Association of Workplace Bullying and Harassment. She is also a proud alumnus of the Workplace Bullying Institute in the USA.In 2010 she pioneered the first full service, workplace bullying resource centre in Canada. Linda offers services from consults to assessments, training for leaders and staff, advocacy, and coaching. On the private practise side of her business, Linda provides specialized treatment for those who are harmed, and a specialize rehab program for those doing the harming. Her philosophy is that we must provide education and treatment for all parties, or we will never fully resolve this abuse. Linda has lobbied for changes in policies, legislation, and with this now obtained in Alberta Canada, she is now working on establishing standards for investigations relating to workplace psychological harassment or psychological violence.FIND MY GUEST HEREWebsite: abrc.caOther Show Links:Talk @ Workplace Bullying Witnesses & Bystanders by Dr. Julia Shaw | TEDxLondonWomenVideo Interview with David Neal of The Fifth Mile ConsultingYOUR HOST: Michelle HorlbogenHER MISSION: To foster civility, respect, and integrity (with a dash of sartorial elegance) in the boardroom and beyond.HER STORY: Two days after reporting ethical concerns to her employer, Michelle was fired. In this fascinating episode, I had the privilege of virtually sitting down with Dr. Bina Patel. Dr. Patel specializes in conflict resolution and organizational health, working in emergency management. She provides conflict management services to reduce workforce turnover, increase morale, and decrease costs in organizational systems - no small feat during the Covid-19 pandemic. We discuss everything from how difficult it is to self-isolate at a time when, as human beings, we all so desperately crave the comfort of companionship, to the incredible bravery and self-sacrifice of those working on the front-lines during the pandemic. How leaders are born of adversity and why Transformational Leadership, not Traditional Top-Down Leadership, is the key to managing teams and coming out the other side of this intact.Dr. Patel also shares a personal story of a time that she was trapped in a toxic workplace culture with toxic leadership. Her insights on what drives people who get a little bit of power, or a title, to abuse that power in an autocratic way rather than use it to help and inspire others is powerful stuff. We also discuss the breakdown of trust in organizations - citing the example of the staff walk-out at a nursing home in Riverside, CA that was in the news - and how that is a reflection of poor leadership and of an environment that was already broken, exacerbating the fear of the staff rather than quelling it.We wrap up the episode with Dr. Patel sharing what she feels is the most important quality of a gentlewoman to emulate today - you're going to love her choice! While the topics we discussed were on the heavy side, we still were able to find joy and laughter in the hour we spent together - something that is so critical for our mental health right now. She was a delightful, insightful, and thoughtful guest - I hope you enjoy this episode.Thank you for listening!Don't forget to Rate, Review & Subscribe!(This episode sponsored by The Red Velvet Shoe Vintage - Listeners can receive a 20% Discount off their order of Custom Made Face Masks - Made in the U.S.A.)ABOUT MY GUEST Dr. Bina PatelIn addition to her work in Emergency Management, Dr. Patel has a consulting practice, Transformational Paradigms, providing leadership executive consulting to C-Suite teams on establishing healthy workplace cultures. In today's episode, I was delighted to have one of my favorite voices on the topic of workplace culture as my guest: Heidi Lynne Kurter.Heidi shares her personal story of being the target of a relentless workplace bully as well as other very painful losses she's endured; her harrowing story had me in tears, so have tissues ready. The day her female workplace bully thought SHE won, Heidi left work and went home and wrote her very first article for Forbes about workplace bullying. That brave pivot at a devastating time was the start of an incredible journey for Heidi and she hasn't looked back since. As always, we wrap up the episode with Heidi sharing what she feels is the most important quality of a gentlewoman to emulate today - her choice is spot on, especially as the pandemic rages on around us.I just know this episode is going to resonate with so many of you. Lyrics from John Lennon's "Nobody Told Me" have been running through my mind over the last few weeks: "Strange Days Indeed - Most Peculiar, Mama..."The swiftness with which the CoVid-19 pandemic came in upon us has had a startling and unprecedented effect on humanity and life as we've all known it. In Episode 4 with Mr. Trey Griggs, we talk about how the demand upon leaders has skyrocketed as they face challenges most would never have anticipated in their lifetimes. How Leadership in the family is equally as critical during this crisis and how the tone set by parents can be a game-changer for our children, who are far less prepared to cope with such shocking changes in their world. We discuss the importance of teaching our children social responsibility, striving for excellence but not perfection, how being a "Generalist" rather than a "Specialist" can be a saving grace, and how even during times of fear, true leaders are revealed and step up to the call to serve others. We wrap up the episode with Trey sharing what he feels is the most important quality of a gentleman to emulate today - hint: it's probably one of the most difficult to master but so important!Thank you for listening!Don't forget to Rate, Review & Subscribe!ABOUT MY GUEST Trey GriggsTrey Griggs is a classic jack-of-all-trades, master of none character. From teaching high school physics to flipping homes, there aren't too many jobs Trey hasn't attempted, and, according to him, he's enjoyed just about every one of them. Trey currently works within the transportation industry as a technology consultant and an industry personality, often incorporating the skills he's acquired in his previous roles to entertain, educate, and inspire those around him. His passion is helping people live a more enjoyable, fulfilling life, and he sees technology as a main driver to accomplishing those goals.FIND MY GUEST HERE: Website: bexcellentoday.com LinkedInTwitterEVENT: WWW.1DAYVC.COMYOUR HOST: Michelle HorlbogenHER MISSION: To foster civility, respect, and integrity (with a dash of sartorial elegance) in the boardroom and beyond.HER STORY: Two days after reporting ethical concerns to her employer, Michelle was fired. “An Advocacy Platform For Proper Workplace Culture” with Michelle Horlbogen of The Gentlewoman BossIn this episode, the tables turn and I'm the (somewhat nervous!) guest on Radio Entrepreneurs, located just outside of Boston in Natick, MA. Radio Entrepreneurs shares the stories of entrepreneurs in the interest of giving more exposure to innovative and fast moving companies while creating a knowledge pool for the enrichment of the entrepreneurial community around the world. Their mission is to bring real entrepreneurial stories to a wider public and to have the best audience for business radio, one listener at a time.I was interviewed by the show's Executive Producer and absolute gentleman, Nathan Gobes. We discuss, among many other things, the importance of accountability in leadership, how critical it is for employees to feel safe and have safe channels to report issues & grievances, and how important workplaceculture is in year 2020. In today's episode I was thrilled to have my first podcast guest: Author Pete Havel.Pete & I talk about some of the big organizations in the news right now that are reeling from the consequences of allowing toxic workplace cultures, workplace harassment, whistleblowing and retaliation to run unchecked: Boeing, Houston Astros, Wells Fargo, & Away Luggage just to name a few.We discuss the multi-faceted costs to organizations who choose short-cuts and cover-ups to handle serious complaints in the workplace, why co-workers tend to look the other way when they see ethical issues and toxic behavior, and why it's so hard for people to do the right thing (I think Pete uses the word "spineless" in his reply...)We also discuss the damage caused by false accusers in the workplace and how women bullying other women rather than supporting them actually erodes the progress made by the Me-Too-Movement and the brave women that have spoken out about it.We wrap up the episode with Pete sharing what he feels is the most important quality of a gentleman to emulate today - and I couldn't agree more with his choice.Thank you, Pete, for being my first Podcast guest!ABOUT MY GUEST : Pete HavelIn addition to being an author, Pete Havel is a consultant, trainer and speaker for leading organizations on the issues of workplace culture and organizational leadership.
