Driven by a family history of cancer and her expertise as a nurse practitioner, Robin Centner was proactive when she learned she carried a gene tied to colon cancer.  She called upon a genetic counselor and underwent genetic testing.  She says this screening saved her life, as from it she learned the gene is predisposed to colon cancer.  Thanks to annual colonoscopies, if she is diagnosed with colon cancer, she will be positioned for early detection, maximizing her chance of survivorship.  This is her story of being a colon cancer previvor.

Joining me for a second time on this podcast, Kristina and I reconnect to have an important conversation about breast cancer awareness and early detection. We discuss her early diagnosis of the BRCA1 gene mutation and the steps she took knowing her chances of getting breast and/or ovarian cancer. Kristina also shares how and when other women can be tested. When we spoke the last time she was on the podcast, she shared the story along with her two sisters (one of which was also diagnosed with the gene mutation). The 3 have bonded together to not only bring awareness but to support one another through their surgeries.   One of the things they've bonded over is running marathons!  They also support and run along side eachother and have just returned from running Berlin! Through this journey Kristina says she has found her voice, thinking at one time that it was possible that cancer might end her life...instead she is out educating, supporting and raising funds for research!     Mom Runs Marathon to Cope With Double Mastectomy, Hysterectomy (today.com)   2024 Run Any Race: Mrs. Kristina Coccoluto's Fundraising Page - Run for Dana-Farber (jimmyfund.org)

Send us a Text Message.Have you ever thought about the power of intuition? Kim Robinson, a breast cancer survivor, did. Kim's lemon-sized tumor could be FELT but NOT SEEN on imaging-3D mammography or Breast MRI. Not only did she feel something was off before her diagnosis, but she also found her voice to advocate for herself w/ her insurance company, leading to her early detection of cancer. Kim shared her journey from being diagnosed w/ stage 1A breast cancer in 2016 to undergoing double mastectomy w/ expanders in 2018 and implants in 2019. She ultimately had them explanted and opted for the DIEP Flap surgery at Center For Restorative Breast Surgery Vanessa Vance, a "Previvor", and now an advocate for Previvors,  joins us to share her proactive steps to reduce her own risk of cancer through a preventative mastectomy and breast reconstruction. She was better able to make those decisions through her serendipitous friendship with Kim. Throughout the episode, we delve into the importance of self-advocacy and patient rights. We discussed the role of social media in rallying patient advocates and the medical community to keep the S codes in place after the 2019 changes that would make it considerably more difficult for many women to be able to have the DIEP Flap surgery. Kim and Vanessa share their experiences w/ genetic testing and the ways to navigate the healthcare system, as well as their emotional journey in coming to terms w/ their body image post-surgery and the importance of supportive communities in helping them through their journeys. Vanessa recommends following Dr. Elizabeth Potter's IG account and her nonprofit Community Breast Surgery Alliance for more resources on advocacy. Kim suggests joining a local breast cancer group or the ABC program at the YMCA. This episode is a treasure trove of resources, experiences, and advice for those on a breast cancer journey and those who are Previvors wanting to know more about how they can take steps to reduce to risk of breast cancer.Join Jamie Vaughn! "I know how different my experience is. I am not facing potentially debilitating treatment(s) or the fear of death. Still, I am experiencing a physical transformation, a redefining of my feminine self, yet I do not feel as if I have the 'right' to be scared, saddened or supported. This is a "me" problem but raises the broad need for inclusivity, acceptance, and support in general and by health care professionals. I no longer have breasts. Pathology confirmed for me that this was the right choice — no cancer yet. Findings indicated that it was 'just a matter of time.' While I truly have no regrets (even looking at my now truly, scarred flat chest) my vanity is still an issue. Time, a lavish, beautiful tattoo of lilacs or orchids and working toward washboard abs to match my washboard chest will help to heal this wound — and, most importantly, no more worries about breast cancer. The guilt and doubt still linger, but then I see the relief in the faces of my family and understand that preventive mastectomy (and going flat) may not be right for everyone, but it was right for me. I am not a survivor, not a previvor, but a preventer." Nanette Elster is a bioethicist. Today's guest is Kristen Carbone, founder of Brilliantly, a wearable warming device for survivors of breast cancer and mastectomies.  Kristen tragically lost her mother in her early twenties due to metastic breast cancer.  The followed a decade of testing, health insurance difficulties, anxiety, and stress about developing breast cancer, until she ultimately decided to undergo a preventative mastectomy and implant reconstruction.Among the many challenges that came after the procedure, one of which, was the loss of sensation and constant feeling of coldness in her chest.  In ensuing conversations with other other who had undergone mastectomies and reconstruction, she came to realize that this was an ongoing issue that dramatically affected the quality of womens lives.  Women were using all sorts of methods to feel warm, often resulting in serious burns and scarring of their chests.  Kristen embarked on a multi-year process of research and development, raising funding, and ultimately developing Brilliantly Warm, a wearable device that a woman could insert into her bra and self-control through an app.  There were no cords, no battery packs, and a woman could lead her daily life in comfort without anyone knowing she was wearing the device.  Enjoy this incredibly inspiring story and please share Brilliantly Warm with your community. You can read more about Brilliantly and Kristen's story at https://www.brilliantly.co/Connect with Kristen directly at:  Kristen@brilliantly.co or find her on Facebook or Instagram @brilliantly.co

I first noticed Merowyn on Instagram during the pandemic, a nurse in full scrubs sharing her experiences of what it was really like to work on the front line, but it was Merowyn's powerful voice advocating for mental health and anti domestic violence that really resonated with me. I was intrigued to learn more about her life... Merowyn grew up in a "clash of cultures" with a Phillipino father and Anglo mother in the suburbs of Melbourne. Physically Merowyn felt out of place as the only brown kid at school and like most kids, just wanted to fit in. Merowyn was also faced with witnessing emotional and physical domestic violence in her home and experienced intergenerational trauma being played out in her family home. In our chat we talk about Merowyn's teenage years where she lived with the impact of her mum's battle with cancer, falling into the "Melbourne shuffle" rave scene as a way to escape her world (and meeting her now husband whilst working in a rave store!!) and later finding her purpose helping people, starting out in pharmacy and later studying nursing. Later in life this affected Merowyn's perspective on relationship and a young adult found herself in a DV relationship, learning the lesson you can not change a person the hard way. In this episode, in honor of Breast Cancer Awareness Month, we speak with Ali Rogin, author of Beat Breast Cancer Like a Boss and award-winning producer of PBS NewsHour. Ali is what is commonly known as a breast cancer previvor, someone who knows they have a mutation that may lead to cancer and takes preventative steps to avoid a diagnosis. With the growth of genetic testing and precision medicine and the ability to isolate genes that can lead to cancer, more and more people may fall into the category of previvors. For instance, women that have the BRCA 1 or 2 mutation, as Rogin does, have a 70% chance of developing breast cancer by the age of 80. Rogin says progress in precision medicine has given these women options they would never have had before, enabling them to make proactive, informed decisions about their future health.
