Having a side effect or long term effect after surviving a battle with Pediatric Cancer is not at all surprising. On today's podcast Marta Blanco will talk about her daughter Sofia, who after being diagnosed with Non Hodgkins Lymphoma in 2003 when she was 4 years old, suffered from Heart Failure during her treatment for this form of Pediatric Cancer. Although Sofia had recovered from her Lymphoma battle and managed to have a good quality of life for a number of years, she passed away from this Heart Failure side effect in April of 2012, just one month after her 13th birthday.
This is a very personal conversation with our friend Mandy Saligari where she allows us all the privilege of bearing witness to her experience of a recent stage 4 cancer diagnosis. Longtime listeners of the podcast will know Mandy is someone who we hold in extremely high regard: an addictions therapist, founder of Charter Harley Street, and all-round badass, who has given us and many others life-changing advice over the years. Five weeks ago, she was diagnosed with Non-Hodgkins Lymphoma and, last week, began her chemotherapy. Feelings are Mandy's speciality - her TedTalk is called “Handle Your Feelings Before They Handle You” - and so she generously agreed to come on the podcast and share exactly what she has been feeling. It's an emotional listen. To all of our listeners affected by cancer, we send you masses of love. Mandy Saligari's Instagram Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

This week on The Diamond Duo Podcast, Tom and Tony relish in not having to think about Carlos Correa or his free agency madness for another wee-oh wait we spoke too soon. The duo begins this one with another look at the Hot Stove for the latest moves and transactions (as of 1/15/23)! These moves are headlined by Boston actually paying one of their superstars in Rafael Devers to keep him in town long term (yes, really), a trade between Detroit and Philadelphia that saw the Phillies snag the Tigers' All Star closer in a shuffling of parts, and, of course, what is hopefully the final chapter in the Carlos Correa saga as he finds his way back to the Twins! The two then pause the show to offer their best wishes and pray for a speedy recovery to Liam Hendriks as he faces his recent diagnosis with Non-Hodgkins Lymphoma. The second half of the show is entirely dedicated to the constructing of what we're calling a Diamond's Double Dozen as Tom and Tony set out to rank the 24 best MLB players going into next season! Trust us, narrowing countless great players to only two dozen is a lot harder than it sounds; so grab some popcorn and enjoy the attempts of these two to put a composite list together! Before closing out this week's show, Tom and Tony stop and pay tribute to the man who has had one of the largest impacts on both of their personal and professional lives: Bruce Avery. Had it not been for Bruce, you wouldn't be listening to this show, hundreds of college students would not have a station to call home, and the communications field would be without some of its most recognizable faces and voices. We, and many others, owe a great deal to Bruce Avery, may he rest in peace. Join us as we dedicate this episode of The Diamond Duo Podcast to our mentor and friend and the great legacy he leaves behind. When he was diagnosed in the summer of 2018 with Non Hodgkins Lymphoma, his internal organs were enlarged, and he had a volleyball size tumor in his abdomen, as well as fluid around his heart. The oncologist told him it was a terminal form of leukemia and without chemotherapy he had a year to live. But he refused conventional treatment and instead began detoxing, made dietary changes and started taking cannabis. Joining us from Tennessee is Doug and his wife Beck.

Kate Arnold underwent a stem cell transplant for Non-Hodgkins Lymphoma 12 years ago. She joins us today to discuss her best survivorship tips for every step of the process.First, you need a goal--- a "why." For Kate, she wanted to get her young daughters through high school. Today, they are both in college.Throughout this process, listen to your gut. ASK QUESTIONS - there are no stupid questions, even if they seem trivial. Make sure you have a medical team that you are comfortable with. Despite many options available in Chicago, Kate opted to have her treatment at MD Anderson Cancer Center in Houston. It's also important to find humor in your situation. Kate says she and her husband were very open about their story, and weren't afraid to crack jokes. Also, even if you have cancer, you still have a life beyond that. Kate talks about dancing in the kitchen with her kids.Make your mental health a priority. Through the Cancer Wellness Center, Kate found a therapist that had a specialty in oncology - she was uniquely qualified to talk about all aspects of the process - even those dark thoughts that creep into a patient's head. She learned that adjusting to a gratitude mindset was very helpful.Because she wasn't afraid to speak up for herself, Kate often got direct phone numbers for doctors and other staff. She tells us a story about when that came in very handy.Often, when you have cancer, well-meaning friends and family can say some pretty awful things. Kate and Peg talk about ways to pivot the conversation away from difficult topics, horror stories, or simply bad advice.Kate is very open and honest about regrets she has had through this whole process. She wishes she had secured mental health help for her kids earlier, and she also wishes she'd been more compassionate toward bad behavior. She encourages any parent with cancer to think about where their children's outbursts are coming from. In fact, it was something her youngest said that gave her clarity. All patients - and all treatment centers - are different. Advice and protocols change between them. It's important to listen to your medical team.Links: MD Anderson Cancer Center: https://www.mdanderson.org/Imerman Angels: https://imermanangels.org/Be The Match: https://bethematch.org/Other ResourcesNational Bone Marrow Transplant Link - (800) LINK-BMT, or (800) 546-5268.nbmtLINK Website: https://www.nbmtlink.org/nbmtLINK Facebook Page: https://www.facebook.com/nbmtLINKnbmtLINK YouTube Page can be found by clicking here.Thank you to this season's sponsors:The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society, www.lls.orgSanofi: https://www.sanofi.com/
Dr Irene's first guest is Kevin Wright, a Property Development guru who helps other Property Developers speed up, streamline, simplify and expand their portfolios via his training programmes, public speaking, group forums, instructional videos, books and videos (Kevin Wright Property on YouTube). Through his company Invisible Investors Ltd, Kevin has helped hundreds of Property Investors from beginners to those with large portfolios, gain more time, property and cash by offering courses and guidance via www.recycleyourcash.co.uk and www.ninjainvestorprogramme.co.uk. Dr Irene and Kevin discuss his past cancer diagnoses and his positive approach to his treatment and experience using NLP techniques, the meaning and acquisition of happiness, health and diet, the building of wealth portfolios with property and his plans for the future. KEY TAKEAWAYS Kevin was a Property Finance Broker for 20 years and prior to that a Financial Advisor so his experience is very comprehensive. He is also a trained NeuroLinguistic Programming (NLP) practitioner and has been for 20 years. With a diagnoses of inoperable Non-Hodgkins Lymphoma via a random blood test, Kevin embarked on significant chemotherapy and focused on three NLP techniques ; Cognitive Reframing, Affirmations and Visualisation, thus avoiding subconscious negativity. Finding positivity in the cancer ‘experience' helped him conquer it. Kevin used his Facebook feed and shared his situation. Over his experience he received a huge amount of good wishes and support as affirmation. Using empowering visualisations of Pac-Man eating cancer cells during his chemotherapy, he envisioned millions of Pac-Men eating cancer cells all over his body. The linking of happiness to achievement is positive, but waiting to be happy for possible upcoming achievements is not helpful. Choose to be happy now. Kevin uses intermittent fasting to watch his weight and fat percentage, and a wholesome varied diet to keep on top his health. As with diet, a balance in different asset investment is advisable to spread risk. Remember, investments are not guaranteed so calculate the amount of your money you need to keep away from high risk investments to stay comfortable. Property gives you leverage that you cannot get with any other asset class. Mortgages allow you to get a much higher return on your investment for the initial cash outlay. BEST MOMENTS ‘I got to know you from the Professional Speakers Academy. Prior to that I already knew you from your Facebook, from all your ads and all the events you've been conducting over the years.' – Irene ‘Notice I am picking my words very carefully there, I'm talking about an ‘experience'. I like to say that I ‘experienced' cancer. I think the unconscious mind picks up on negative phraseology. For me, a far more empowering label having come out the other side of cancer is not a ‘survivor', it's a ‘conquerer.'' – Kevin ‘Working through my knowledge of Affirmation using NLP, I came up with a statement that I would use every time someone would ask after my health and the statement was ‘I feel perfectly healthy today.'' – Kevin ‘No one leads a blemish free life. It's impossible. There will be challenges, there will be tough times, financially, health wise, whatever. ‘It's not how hard you get hit. It's how hard you get hit and keep moving forward.'' - Kevin ‘Habits form. If you do something consistently for 21 days your unconscious mind says ah! OK, this is how we do it now. So you've ingrained a new habit.' – Kevin ‘Part of any wealth portfolio needs to have property in it. You can decide that you actually don't want to be a residential landlord and be a commercial landlord. So you just deal with business people.' – Kevin VALUABLE RESOURCES Join Patreon : http://www.patreon.com/drireneching Instagram: irene.ching.777 Tiktok: @ireneching777 Youtube channel: Dr Irene Ching Twitter: @ireneching7777 Clubhouse: @ireneching1 https://www.facebook.com/irene.ching.735 LinkedIn : https://www.linkedin.com/in/irene-ching-742623219 ABOUT THE HOST Dr Irene Ching is a medical practitioner who specialises in Family Medicine, Wealth and Life Coach, Property/ Business Investor, Speaker, Quantum Wealth Creation Accelerator and Podcaster : Be Happy, Healthy and Wealthy. That's What I Heard is a hilarious, scandalous, and sometimes even moving, weekly sit-down with Sean Phipps and Carly Mahady. Sean and Carly were delighted to have the fabulous Shannen Joyce as their first podcast guest to grace their presence. Shannen was first diagnosed with Non-Hodgkins Lymphoma in July 2014, when she was 19 which she battled with three times in total. In recent years her and Carly have struck up an extremely close relationship, so it was only fitting to have her on as the first podcast guest of the series. Shannen tells her own story and the highs and lows that her and her family have gone through since 2014 and how her health has fluctuated along the way. Shannen also speaks for the first time about being “cancelled” earlier on this year In a long and in-depth discussion on the toxicity of anonymous online forums.Produced by Wireless. Hosted on Acast. Today on the show, I have a really special conversation with my friend Danielle. This conversation is inspired by Danielle's blog, Me, Myself and my Lymphoma, which is a detail of her journey through Cancer, Treatment and now Remission during a pandemic. This is a conversation that touches on subjects that I think most of us can relate to. Danielle tells her story with humour (and swears) and humanized the experience of being the parent to young Children while treating Cancer.A little about Danielle: Danielle Hitchcock is a multidisciplinary graphic designer and the Principal + Creative Director of Twin Design in Hamilton, ON. A former dancer, she found her way to Yoga in the mid-2000s and would later complete teacher training programs in both Yoga and Pilates. She is a mother, wife, daughter, sister, friend, life-long learner and cancer survivor — not necessarily in that order. She writes about her experience with Non-Hodgkins Lymphoma (and its aftermath) at memyselfandlymphoma.com. When she's not writing, designing or moving, you can find her parenting her 6-year-old twins. At a family event in 2011, a photographer asked Bill Vogel - multiple times - to button his suit coat. He couldn't because he'd gained too much weight. Bill says he was "totally embarrassed" in front of family and friends. That was the turning point. When he got home, he weighed himself: 297 pounds on a 6'6" frame. He vowed never to weigh that much again. He did his research, and found a plan to lose weight and that he could sustain: low carb, low sugar, low grains. In one year, he lost all 70 pounds and has kept the weight off since then. In 2016, he was diagnosed with Leukemia and Non-Hodgkins Lymphoma. The pizza in New Jersey is the best in the country, quite possibly the world. However, which pizza place is the best is always a point of contention depending on who you ask. Brooklyn Square Pizza consistently ranks as one of the best pizza joints in the Garden State and its owner, Peter Grippo, has some deep roots in the pizza world.Segment 1Peter "Pizza" discusses his background working for his uncle at his pizza shop in Brooklyn, NY and going out on his own in 2001. His signature pie, the "Upside Down," has become one of the most recognizable around the state. Peter describes his square pizzas, why he puts the sauce on top of the cheese, and why it is definitely NOT a "Sicilian" pie. Even though Brooklyn Square Pizza has been busy since day one, Peter gives some shout outs to Peter Genovese of the NJ.com and Dave Portnoy of Barstool Sports who have recognized Brooklyn Square Pizza as one of the best in the state. Today in New Jersey History: The Bayonne Bridge opened on November 15, 1931Segment 2Peter discusses dealing with the pandemic, labor shortages at restaurants, and other things that have impacted his business. Peter was diagnosed with Non-Hodgkins Lymphoma in 2016 and working and running three Brooklyn Square Pizza locations in Jackson, Toms River, and Manalapan he said has given him a purpose. He also talks about ideas he has for the future of the restaurant.New Jersey Fun Fact: New Jersey was the first state to sign the Bill of RightsSegment 3 "Spread Love it's the Brooklyn Way" may be a Biggie Smalls' lyric, but that has become the motto of Brooklyn Square Pizza. Peter talks about the importance of how he interacts with his customers and his community. Peter also discusses how overwhelming the support his community brought to the table, purchasing pies he could deliver to hospitals, churches, and other places that support the community. He is also a big supporter of the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society because he's seen firsthand the impact it has on other people's lives. After hearing that a fellow high school classmate was diagnosed with Non Hodgkins Lymphoma, High School seniors Cole Stabnick, Luke Reynolds and five others created an event to honor his cancer fight. This event became a non profit called BALL 4 A CURE. This non profit is anchored by a 3 on 3 basketball tournament along with a recently added golf tournament and has raised over $100,000, which has been donated to the Connecticut Children's Medical Center to help in the fight against Pediatric Cancer. This non profit is only in its infancy as there are plans to expand both the number of events as well as hopefully working directly with pediatric cancer patients to help make their difficult lives easier and happier. Both Cole and Luke are vey passionate about giving back which is always a great thing to see, especially from two young men that are simultaneously trying to advance their own blossoming career paths.
The Case: Jessica has Hashimoto's Disease and can't seem to balance her thyroid Her doctors say her levels are fine but she's experiencing bloating, fatigue, hair loss, GI issues, and brain fog. She met with several doctors but none were able to address her concerns. The Investigation When I met Jessica, I knew that we had to go beyond supporting the thyroid, we had to slow or stop the attack on her immune system. There are many triggers and Jessica had already cut out gluten. This was great but that told me we had to dig deeper. I noticed that Jessica came from a family of farmers and had quite a bit of exposure. Figuring out her specific triggers was how we were going to solve her autoimmune mystery. Autoimmune Triggers and Glyphosate I talk a lot about the four most common triggers for autoimmune disease and they are: stress, toxins, infections and foods. There is one thing that intersects with all four of these triggers - glyphosate. To explain it fully, I invited Jeffrey Smith on the show. He is the Founder and Executive Director of the Institute for Responsible Technology and Protect Nature Now. He's also a bestselling author, award-winning filmmaker, and an in-demand speaker. I could think of nobody better to explain what's going on for those with autoimmune disease and even for those who do not have an autoimmune disease. What is Glyphosate? Glyphosate is the main ingredient found in Roundup (a herbicide) created by Monsanto which is now owned by Bayer. This chemical has been found (in a US lawsuit) to have contributed to Non-Hodgkins Lymphoma and cancer. It has also been linked to more than 30 diseases. It was originally patented as a descaler for industrial builders because it chelates minerals. When it gets into the human body, it also grabs minerals from our system and prevents these minerals from doing their work in keeping us healthy. How are we Exposed to Roundup and Glyphosate? Since the late 1990's, Roundup has been used on human food including genetically modified crops such as soy, corn, cotton, canola, sugar beets, and alfalfa. These GMO crops are engineered to be Roundup-ready which means they can withstand it. Other crops that are often sprayed are oats, wheat, mung beans, lentils, chickpeas, and even orchard fruits and grapes used for wine. It is found throughout the food chain. Effects of Glyphosate Exposure There are many ways that glyphosate exposure can affect the body, including: Mineral deficiencies (which can cause metabolic pathways to shut down) Acts as an antibiotic that kills off the beneficial bacteria in our microbiome. Can break down the cellular walls of our gut, brain, kidneys, or other organs in the body Can damage and mutate the DNA which can lead to cancer. Can damage the mitochondria which has been linked to chronic fatigue, cancer, aging, and several other diseases. Interferes with intercellular communication causing gap junctions (also linked to cancer). Blocks the production of good gut bacteria. Can throw off hormonal balance between estrogen and testosterone. Acts as an endocrine disruptor. Can cause epigenetic changes in gene expression in future generations. Suppresses cellular detoxification pathways and downgrades Nrf2. How Can Glyphosate Trigger Autoimmune Disease? Several of the effects listed above can then contribute to the development of an autoimmune disease. Jeffrey points to GMOs and BT toxin. BT toxin works by creating tiny holes in the insects and that is how it acts as an insecticide. While this can help grow those plans, it can also have the same effect on human cells. This is why he believes that leaky gut can be directly related to BT toxins and that leaky gut can lead to a variety of autoimmune diseases because the gut is now allowing bigger proteins that don't below in the bloodstream, directly into the bloodstream and the immune system starts to see these as an invader and attacks them. The thing is that when the immune system attacks them, it can also by accident attack our other tissues. For example, in the case of Hashimoto's, the immune system is attacking the thyroid because it's mistaking it as an intruder. Because the gap junctions are permanently open due to leaky gut, more and more proteins get into the bloodstream and this creates a lot of inflammation. Scientific studies have found that lab animals fed GMOs will develop inflammation and issues with the immune system, leaky gut, and the destruction of the good bacteria in the gut. Diseases That May Be Linked to Glyphosate and GMO Foods Jeffrey shares that correlational charts show a rise of specific diseases in parallel with the increased use of glyphosate on soy and corn in the US as well as the increased prevalence of genetically modified soy and corn. The specific diseases that appear in the correlation include: Inflammatory Bowel Disease Deaths from intestinal infection Liver disease Various cancers (liver, bile duct, kidney, breast) Autism ADHD Deaths from Alzheimer's Deaths from Senile Dementia Deaths from Parkinson's Anxiety Suicide by overdosing Schizophrenia Celiac disease Insomnia and other Sleep Disorders Skin problems Birth defects Eye problems Diabetes Obesity Stroke and Hypertension Anemia While of course correlation does not prove causation, Jeffery says that he's seen the correlations first hand. He recently surveyed 3256 people who switched to an organic diet and they reported that they felt better. In fact, 85.2% said their digestive issues were resolved. They also reported improvements in fatigue, weight problems, brain fog, anxiety, depression, food sensitivities and allergies. In addition, 21.4% of respondents reported improvements with their autoimmune diseases. Additional Threats from Engineered Microbes We often focus on the microbes in our gut but the atmosphere is full of microbes. And, all of these different microbes belong to microbiomes. For example, there is a microbiome in the dirt, in trees, in other organisms, and in the atmosphere. The threat to these microbiomes (and our own) comes from genetically engineered microbes. Microbes can mutate, swap genetic material, and travel around the world. This is how an engineered microbe created for one purpose could end up inside the DNA of hundreds or thousands of other types of microbes and enter the ecosystems with unknown effect. Jeffrey is trying to stop the release of engineered microbes and has created a film about the threat. You can watch “Don't Let the Gene Out of the Bottle” on his website protectnaturenow.com How to Avoid Glyphosate, BT and GMO Foods Jeffrey gets asked all the time about how to avoid these harmful chemicals. Is going organic enough given the exposure so many of us have already experienced? Jeffrey says it is possible to heal from GMO and Glyphosate exposure but it's more than just switching to organic. You will likely need to remineralize, restore your leaky gut, heal the mitochondria and rebalance hormones (especially if there are sleep issues causing anxiety or depression). The good news is that reducing the GMO and Glyphosate burden has helped people regain their health. He suggests tracking how you feel before you switch to organic and then each day on a clean diet. If going organic feels like a financial challenge, he outlines a few areas to focus and a few ways to reconsider your budget for health and food. There are also certain foods to avoid because they have the highest concentration of Glyphosate or BT toxin. Are GMO and Glyphosate Related to Peanut Allergies? There could be a connection between GMO soy and the increase in peanut allergies as these have a cross reactivity. Plus, genetically modified soy has trypsin inhibitors. Trypsin makes it possible for the body to break down certain proteins including peanut proteins. Genetically modified soy has seven times more trypsin inhibitors compared to natural soy. When these proteins are not broken down properly, they remain in the stomach long enough to create an allergic reaction. Glyphosate and BT (which may damage the mitochondria, destroy the microbiome, and cause leaky gut) can also contribute to an allergic reaction. Testing for Glyphosate and BT Exposure It is possible to find out if you have toxins like Glyphosate and BT in your system. There are urine tests available. If you plan to detox, it can be helpful to do a test before you start and then again afterward to get a sense of the change in toxin levels in the body. Next Steps in Solving Jessica's Health Mystery After spending 2 hours with Jessica reviewing her health history and diet, I saw that she came from a long family of farmers and has not only been exposed to many herbicides on the farm, she also has never really eaten organic foods. She was also gluten-free but was eating quite a bit of conventional corn and soy. Our first step was to clean up her diet by switching to organic, non-GMO corn and lowering how much of it she was eating. She also switched her other foods to organic. We also had to support her gut and liver. We did this with a cleanse, as well as microbial nutrients like GI MicrobX and FC Cidal and supported her digestion with digestive enzymes and Hydrochloric acid. We also supported the healing of her gut with Glutamine and EnteroVite, as well as probiotics. After the gut cleanse, I wanted to make sure that we restored the microbiome because glyphosate can be so damaging. I recommended R's Koso. This is a Japanese fermented drink made from more than 100 different vegetables, fruits, and plants that I find delivers great results. It's like a natural prebiotic and probiotic and a great way to rebalance and continue to support the microbiome. By the way, I have a code for anyone that may want to try it and save 10%, it's INNA10. Use it at checkout on their website. We also had to help out her liver so we did a Push Catch Detox followed by 3 months of phase 2 support using NAC. Happy Ending In just 3 months of the new protocol, Jessica was feeling much better and her brain fog was gone. Eliminating Health Mysteries For Jessica, we were able to find that missing piece of the health puzzle and help her regain her health. Mary Ann Massolio saw her son pass away at the age of 9 from Non Hodgkins Lymphoma, only 6 months after being diagnosed with a cancer that normally has a very high cure rate. As a Pediatric Oncology Social Worker in Tampa Florida, Mary Ann had been involved in non profits for many years and then became the Director of the 1 Voice Foundation. After thinking about an idea that she had, in 2011 Mary Ann began the lengthy work of planning and putting together the 1 Voice Academy, which is the first school in the nation to be designed solely for Pediatric Cancer Patients. This school officially opened earlier this September, after a more than 10 year process. Mary Ann will talk about both her son Jay and the 1 Voice Academy, which hopefully will be just the first of many schools to offer parents an opportunity to enroll their normally stay at home children into a place with the proper type of environment for both health and learning.

This week's guest is Shannon Cury, Non-Hodgkin's Lymphoma survivor, writer and comedian. At the time of the interview Shannon was waiting to get her follow up scan after chemo to see whether to not she would need to do radiation, but she is officially NED (no evidence of disease) now! Shannon explains the whirlwind she went through to discover her diagnosis, how her mass was so large that it broke her sternum, and gives us advice for some super common chemo side effects. She also speaks to how much cancer has taught her about herself, realizing where she was putting her energy before cancer and how now she's taking more time for herself and the things she loves to do. One of the things that stands out to me about Rachel is the amount of attention she has devoted to her own growth as a person and how it is clearly reflected in how she engages with me and no doubt her clients. This time of year, besides supporting her clients and building her business, Rachel enjoys gardening and hiking. She lives in coastal Northern California with her partner and dog buddy. She enjoys cooking, creating random art, reading, body movement and building a mind-body connection, and being in nature and with loved ones. Rachel has been cancer-free for five years. 0:00:00 How the cancer was discovered 0:07:45 Post-surgery 0:11:30 Re-entering the world 0:19:20 Self-advocacy 0:25:50 Patient advocacy 0:33:00 The power of the patient 0:38:35 Benefit of the patient advocate 0:47:34 Diagnosed again at 35 0:55:00 Adult Follicular Lymphoma 1:01:50 High dose chemotherapy 1:16:13 Powerfully engaging with your physician 1:28:30 Creating ceremony in survivorship 1:39:45 Facing mortality and maladaptive behaviors 1:57:00 Empathy recorded 3/26/2021
The Nashville music engineer and producer Billy Decker joins me to talk about his new book 'Template Mixing and Mastering: The Ultimate Guide to Achieving a Professional Sound'. Billy is one of the hottest mixers and engineers in the music business - in large part because of the speed he can mix and master his tracks. He does that by already having templates established for his tracks. We also talk about being friends for 35 years - way back to the days of hanging out and playing guitar in Lincoln, NE, his battle with Non-Hodgkins Lymphoma and much more. Lastly, I premier the new theme song for the podcast, 'Kansas City' which is made up of musicians that were guests on the podcast! They are known as the "Trading Fours All-Stars"- Laura Ellis (Episode 28) Lead Vocals, Go-Go Ray (Episode 37) drums, Blake Eberhard (Episode 44) bass, Tyson Leslie (Episode 23) piano and hammond B3, Bobby Harris (Episode 11) saxophone and me on guitars! www.billydecker.comhttps://www.amazon.com/Template-Mixing-Mastering-Achieving-Professional/dp/1785007491https://www.instagram.com/deckerboards/?hl=enLike and review the podcast!
For additional notes and resources check out Douglas’ website.IntroductionStem Cell Research (SCR) is an area of medical ethics. The issues are complicated because of the science, and also difficult because the Bible does not address scientific or medical issues directly. What are stem cells? "Stem cells are the body's raw materials — cells from which all other cells with specialized functions are generated. Under the right conditions in the body or a laboratory, stem cells divide to form more cells, called daughter cells. These daughter cells either become new stem cells (self-renewal) or become specialized cells (differentiation) with a more specific function, such as blood cells, brain cells, heart muscle, or bone. Stem cells are unique — no other cell in the body has the natural ability to generate new cell types."The NIH has invested more than $500 million in human embryonic stem-cell research.A research law passed by Congress in May 2011 gave the Obama administration the go-ahead to continue funding embryonic stem-cell research. Other presidential administrations had been resisting this research. Two poles of opinion re: Embryonic SCRFor: "Support SCR if you care about disease." Paid ethicists may regard pre-implantation embryo as a clump of cells, not a person. ESCR touted as a panacea. Such a position disrespects the views of nearly all world religions. It also exaggerates the current success of ESCR, which are negligible.Against: Conservative believers (esp.) hold that personhood begins at fertilization or conception. Psalm 139 gives us a “divinely inspired ultrasound." Oppose research if we're "playing God." Such reasoning has been used to oppose counseling, surgery, and science in general. Was Psalm 139 (as poetry) intended to give us scientific data about human life? Are those who oppose SCR against all SCR, or only against ESCR?It’s not that simple; beware those who oversimplify. Two sources for SCEmbryo, amniotic fluid, fetus, umbilicus, placenta. More than 400,000 fertilized ova are in cold storage.ASC: can obtain from brain, lung, breast, liver, pancreas, tooth pulp, bone marrow – even adipose tissue. We don't have to settle the difficult metaphysical issues in order to talk intelligently about scientific research.RisksESC: Obtained from IV fertilizations (at about day 3) -- destroys the embryo. Risk of rejection; risk of tumors.ASC: Obtained from adult (or from one's own body) -- reduction of rejection or tumorigenesis. What works?Adult stem cells far more successful than embryonic. Ease of procurement. The technology is in its infancy, yet (as of time of this podcast), 514 clinical trials -- all with ASC, none with ESC.ASCs have scores of over 60 therapies, ESC have none that I am aware of.Applications: Leukemia, multiple myeloma, ovarian cancer, solid tumors, sarcomas, testicular cancer, brain tumors, retinoblastoma, breast cancer, neuroblastoma, Non-Hodgkins Lymphoma, renal cell cancer, autoimmune diseases.IPSs (induced pluripotent stem cells) have eclipsed ESCs in terms of value because of lower cost, greater ease of production, and problems originating in genetic identity of the patient. In financial terms, so far, ESCR has yielded a poor return.ConclusionsAt the present, ASCR is far more promising than ESCR.Fine to have a position, but be willing to suspend while evaluating evidence. If you don’t understand the science, admit it’s beyond you--be humble. Some Christians I talk to admit they don’t understand.Others are dogmatic, yet it’s clear they haven’t any idea what the scientific evidence is behind their opinion. In any SC discussion we need to distinguish whether we’re talking about ESC or ASC.If you believe that life starts at fertilization and are contemplating medical intervention for pregnancy, or are discussing the issues with others, think carefully about your words and decisions. Will left-over eggs will be frozen and then destroyed? Or frozen, and later experimented on? Maybe implant all the eggs, or maybe hold off for now.We need a robust Christian ethic that recognizes God’s boundaries and values.Christians need to engage theologically in the issues of our day, not sit it out.Worst to have an ill-informed opinion!Actually better to have no opinion. But best to have an informed opinion.FurtherPodcast on Abortion (as this site)Dr. Oz on Oprah, click here.Presidential debate at Saddleback.
