Liz Garst grew up in Coon Rapids, Iowa, in a family of agricultural pioneers. Her grandfather Roswell helped convert Midwest farmers to technologies like hybrid seed, nitrogen fertilizer, and mechanization. Liz shares childhood memories from Soviet Premier Nikita Khrushchev’s visit to their farm and how the family legacy inspired her own career in international agriculture and global development. After jobs with the Peace Corps and the World Bank, she came home in the 1980s, at the height of the Farm Crisis. Now she helps manage the family land as Whiterock Conservancy, dedicated to transforming farming again by promoting ecological restoration, outdoor recreation, and sustainable agriculture. To learn more, read Lauren Soth’s 1955 Des Moines Register editorial, which won the Pulitzer Prize for inviting Khrushchev to Iowa, and check out the paper’s historic photos of his visit with the Garsts.

In the 90s, social media entrepreneur Kim Garst was sick of being broke, so she launched a seven-figure business from her dining room table with no marketing. When she maxed out on that web design business, Garst became involved in a wildly successful network marketing business, which morphed into consulting, and eventually Boom Social, a social media marketing firm that is considered a leader in its industry. In this episode, Kim and I discuss: How the heck she is such an involved mom of two, and wife, while building these killer businesses. Her innate comfort with making money. Why her derailment from plans to attend law school by motherhood was the best thing that happened to her career. Why selling your knowledge is often far more lucrative and impactful than doing the actual job. The importance of surrounding yourself with other positive, ambitious people. Her husband's attitude about her professional and financial success. How this work-at-home mom launched a 7-figure social media business

Part 2 of my wide-ranging and though-prvoking conversation with Karen Garst, "The Faithless Feminist," continues in this episode. For those undergoing a process of discovery and deconstruction of their inherited belief systems--particularly coming out of a fundamentalist or conservative religious framework--then this episode is a must-listen. That process is fraught with emotional threats: fear, anxiety, and separation from loved ones. But it can also foster learning and new directions for life, previously unimagined. Don't miss this one!

North American culture is in transition in many ways, and religion is one of those areas that is in transition, especially away from organized religion to other avenues. As such these various avenues are resources for resistance to oppression and for positive activism in our world. Both of today's guests live in the Portland Metro and represent the transition that is taking place. Karen Garst says that "Organized religion is a cultural barrier to full equality for men and women." She is the author of Women Beyond Belief: Discovering Life Without Religion. Her website is The Faithless Feminist. Rabbi Brian calls himself "a modern-day rabbi with John Lennon’s inclusivity and a Blues Brothers mission." He lives in Portland and does most of his work on-line at Religion Outside the Box. --- Karen L. Garst has a Bachelors degree and a Masters degree in French. She obtained her PhD in Curriculum and Instruction from the University of Wisconsin, Madison. She moved to Oregon in 1980 to serve as field representative of the Oregon Federation of Teachers. In 1988 she was selected to serve as the executive director of the Oregon Community College Association and in 1996 as the executive director of the Oregon State Bar. She retired from that position in 2008. She is married and lives in Oregon. -- Born and raised on the small island of Manhattan, Rabbi Brian grew up exceedingly rational. He thought he was going to be a math major and then an architect. Asking many ‘why’s led him to rabbinical school where he continued to struggle with the answers he received. In 2000, he left mainstream, organized, denominational religion to pursue religion-outside-the-box ( ROTB.org). In 2007 he took up working full-time as a mathematics (and life lesson) instructor where he recovered his minister’s heart. In 2015 Rabbi Brian followed his calling to nourish spiritual-religious hunger full time – no matter people’s theology, religious background, or lack of either. He lives in Portand, Oregon with his family. Karen Garst: 1:44 Rabbi Brian: 29:30

We were delighted to have Dr. Karen Garst as our guest for this episode. She joined us to talk about her book, Women Beyond Belief: Discovering Life Without Religion. Her book contains stories from 22 women who share their stories of what led them to leave behind their various forms of religion and the lives they now lead after moving away from supernatural beliefs. We were lucky enough to even have her read a couple excerpts for us! It's a bit difficult to believe, but this episode completes three full years of us recording the Godless Rebelution podcast! As such, the rest of the show is a lot more loose than our usual fare and has only been very lightly edited for continuity and sound quality. You'll notice it's a bit more rambling and raw than what you've heard from us for a long time. In addition to our interview with Dr. Garst, we covered the following items: Openly atheist Arizona state representative Athena Salman delivers godless invocation which led a Republican colleague to remind her that prayers are supposed to mention a "higher power" Ryan educates us on some of the finer points of firefighting Kevin Swanson says pastors with gay children must resign Rick Wiles exposes himself as an anti-semite during rant where he calls Ivanka Trump a "Kabbala practicing, evil woman" We wax philosophical throughout the other stories, talk about the last three years of doing the show, and hint at what's next Patreon subscribers get extended outtakes and early-release content for this episode. We've also got some items from the last couple episodes that ended up on the cutting-room floor that we'll be releasing as patron-only content in the next few days. Bruce McQuain from Blackfive joined us once again for Someone You Should Know, our weekly tribute to the troops. Bruce spent 28 years in the U.S. Army and he is a veteran of the Vietnam war. He brings a perspective and understanding to these stories that we could never match. This week Bruce told us about two incredible Marines wounded in Afghanistan and eager to rejoin the fight, Sgt. Paul Boothroyd and Cpl. Matt Garst, Sgt. Paul Boothroyd PBoothroyd Manning the top of a compound south of Sangin, Afghanistan, Sgt. Paul Boothroyd III took a sniper round to the head. He landed face down onto the muddy roof with a thud. Fifteen minutes later, Boothroyd was bandaged, smiling, smoking a cigarette and giving the “thumbs up” as he waited for the medevac helicopter, to which he walked under his own power. Cpl. Matt Garst mgarst “My first thought was, ‘Oh s—, I just hit an IED,’” he said. “Then I thought, ‘Well I’m standing. That’s good.’” Garst’s squad stared at him in disbelief. The square-jawed Marine has a tendency to be short-tempered, and the realization that the blast was meant to kill him spiked his adrenaline and anger. “It pissed me off,” he said. He directed his men to establish a security perimeter while letting them know in his own way that he was OK. “What the f— are you looking at?” he said. “Get on the cordon!” Garst quickly radioed back to base, calling an explosive ordnance disposal team and quick reaction force. “I called them and said, ‘hey, I just got blown up. Get ready,’” he said. “The guy thought I was joking at first. ‘You got blown up? You’re not calling me. Get out of here.’” The Someone You Should Know radio collaboration began as an extension of Matt Burden’s series at Blackfive. Bruce does an incredible job with the series every week.
