We've tackled the social and political implications of Dobbs v Jackson on our sister podcast, On The Rocks Politica. We've written essays on what it means to communities and to women from a broad spectrum of experience and socio-economic backgrounds on this podcast and at 'Essays from An Artist. So it was important here at M the Media Project that we tackle the economic implications on this week's 'Are We Here Yet?' podcast. Our guest, Chanel Dubofsky is an author, educator and advocate who shared with us a multiplicity of information regarding the economic implications for women and for society as a whole due to restrictions placed on women to access reproductive healthcare. Chanel's Lilith Article June 24 2022 About Chanel: Chanel Dubofsky's writing on reproductive health, abortion access, religion, and pop culture can be found in New York Magazine, Lilith, and others. Led by the dynamic Reverend Daniel Kanter, a passionate group of clergy, counselors, and volunteers run a travel program that helps Texas women, transgender men, and non-binary people circumvent state restrictions on abortion healthcare. The group shepherds up to 20 individuals twice a month to New Mexico to terminate their pregnancies. On this trip, an 18-year-old Latina mother, who wants to provide a stable future for her toddler takes the journey. Visit CTLpod.com to find out more about the podcast, resources for abortion care, and information on how you can take action. The travel program is a partnership of First Unitarian Church of Dallas, Southwestern Women's Options, and New Mexico Religious Coalition for Reproductive Choice. The travelers fly to New Mexico, meet with counselors, are provided a meal, and given transportation to an Albuquerque clinic. The physicians provide accurate and safe healthcare information and abortion pills to end their pregnancies. Individuals can exercise autonomy over their bodies and family planning through the dedicated support of those who run and volunteer for the travel program. The changing legal landscape in Texas means that some groups in Texas are changing or pausing their operations. Specifically, The Southwest Surgery center in Dallas has been forced to stop providing abortion services until further notice. The clinic will remain open to offer other reproductive healthcare. Also, note that the doctor in this episode uses the abortion pill brand name Mifeprex and later refers to it by the generic name Mifepristone. They are the same drug. If you have questions about abortion pills, go to https://www.abortionfinder.org/abortion-types/pill.
Before the show this week we offer a PSA about Roe v. Wade being overturned. Then we delve into our first movie THE FORGIVEN (2:36), John Michael McDonagh's drama about a couple (Ralph Fiennes and Jessica Chastain) who deal with the fallout of hitting and killing a young man with their car in Morocco. Next, we tackle Joseph Kosinski's SPIDERHEAD (21:11), a frustrating movie where the only good things we can say about it is that it has a great soundtrack and supporting performance by Chris Hemsworth. After that, we review Magdalena Lauritsch's RUBIKON (39:42), a disappointingly derivative sci-fi film about three astronauts caught in a moral dilemma after a climate disaster strikes Earth. And in this week's Patreon exclusive audio, we talk about Michael Crichton's 1973 sci-fi film WESTWORLD! Abortion Resources: podvoices.help

In December 1978, 6 men wearing black ski masks and driving a stolen van broke into the cargo terminal at JFK Airport in New York. They were there to steal a whole lot of money and carry out what is still the largest cash robbery ever committed on US soil. Today we're talking about the Lufthansa Heist, the New York Mob in the 1970s and 1980s, and everything in between. TRIGGER WARNING - We discuss abortions in this episode, so if that content isn't for you, please exercise your discretion with this episode. Carmen Cervantes is a woman who never thought she would be a mother, by her own conscious choice. When she and her husband found themselves unexpectedly pregnant they consciously decided that they would have an abortion. Then, they changed their minds... I have a lot of respect for Carmen because she has entered into motherhood with her eyes wide open to the challenges she would face, the physical impact, the exhaustion and the financial strain. Despite the fact that we would have made different choices to start with, we are completely aligned in our desire to be conscious parents. (I would have respected her choice either way FYI!) We are both women who are horrified at the thought that abortions might be made illegal in the states if Roe vs. Wade is reversed. We talk about this in this podcast. So trigger warning for those of you who might be sensitive to this sort of conversation. It's also on my heart to say, if you are a woman who wishes she could be pregnant, you have a big hug coming from me... I know conversations like this might be hard to hear... but I feel strongly that we must be talking powerfully about keeping our choice and body autonomy. For you, for me, for our daughters and for the women around the globe who would feel the reverse of Roe so much more than we would! #RiseSisterRise ** “Our history, our trauma, the way that we were raised, the place we grew up, everything enforms the decisions that we're going to make as mothers.” - Carmen Cervantes “Nobody can tell you what's right for you.” - Carmen Cervantes “There's this whole idea about creating this ideal norm that nobody can measure up to, nor should we aspire to do that. We should embrace the fact that we're all different and that we all have different needs, live, and let live.” - Carmen Cervantes “We need to stop comparing ourselves, stop putting our own perception on others. Just take care of yourself, take care of your family. And hopefully you can learn to take care of others.” - Carmen Cervantes “There comes a point where we need to stop just pulling people out of the river. We need to go upstream and find out why they're falling in.” ― Desmond Tutu “What would happen if one woman told the truth about her life? The world would split open.”― Muriel Rukeyser Carmen Cervantes is the host of the podcast Mother Mami Mom. She curates a space that helps mothers shed the idealized fantasy of motherhood and embrace their own journey through all of its ups and downs. She is passionate about bringing mother's stories to the forefront and strives to encourage women in motherhood through community. She has learned that most women feel like they are failing as moms and hopes to create a collective shift in consciousness by showing up with curiosity instead of judgment so that all women can begin to truly enjoy their own motherhood journey. Last year, I started my podcast and welcomed my baby boy earth side." Candice is a mom, podcaster, social marketer and essentialist who loves to engage in interesting conversations with other influencers and entrepreneurs. Her favourite conversations are the ones that take courage to engage in. (Check out her podcast, Create the Ripple Podcast) She has learned the power of saying no, listening to your own heart and speaks openly about subtle abuse as it occurs in relationships - personally and professionally. She's become a voice for listening to your own truth and speaking it clearly, powerfully - at home, at work and in your life. She spends her time living - in a tiny home (250 sq ft), traveling, speaking and sharing candidly with others how to live life after betrayal, to trust themselves, to speak up for themselves and set powerful boundaries. After a narcissistic partner cheated on her with multiple women, left her (and the country!) With over 350 thousand dollars worth of bad debt, Candice was forced to rebuild her life, her credit and her trust in herself. Coming out of this, she encountered her own “Me Too” moment dealing with sexual coercion and harassment in her professional life; saying no resulted in her being the target of gossip that tarnished her reputation. Deeply affected by the gaslighting and the experiences, she adopted a minimalist lifestyle, leaned on her personal network and practiced radical personal forgiveness, acceptance and responsibility. The journey was not without its impact and Candice shares powerfully about dealing with anxiety, depression, shame and learning to let go. When grief rocked her world a little less than 2 years ago, Candice knew it was time to stop her life, hit the pause button and finally do the deep work to heal her heart, self and mindset. Emerging from this place, Candice has begun to embrace her fierce and receptive feminine nature. The journey to be and embrace all the parts of herself has led her to the place to start her wildly successful Create the Ripple Podcast; Trust the Niggle and Tell the Truth - where she features other amazing guests who are not afraid to do the hard work of personal development, listen to their own minds/heart and then speak up and out for those things that matter; to themselves and to make a difference in the world. Candice loves her essentialist lifestyle for the beauty and freedom it offers her. She can never resist the urge to take off her boots to walk barefoot into a clear mountain lake or stream. When she is not connecting or writing, she can be found disappearing into the backcountry trails of Canada with her life-love Mark and losing herself exploring waterfalls and mountain trails. She is a quiet introvert who adores eating clean foods and reading a great book. Trigger Warning. This is a Tell the Truth personal podcast that might be triggering for some. Saturday, January 22nd marked the 49th anniversary of the Roe vs. Wade Supreme Court ruling. That landmark moment is now being threatened as the political landscape has changed in the last few years. Now, in this podcast I am endeavoring to NOT go into the political or the religious beliefs around this that are so polarizing; but rather to ask my listeners to pull themselves away from the single abortion issue to the grander women empowerment and equality issue. I share some uncomfortable statistics, and honestly, I think those are the tip of the iceberg and there are many more ways women are paying the price financially, physically, mentally and emotionally when they are forced to carry to term children that men refuse to acknowledge or support. I am surprised at how well men have pitted women against each other for centuries and we seem to keep falling back into the trap where we argue against each other as women for different views, while we fail to see the bigger issue. The way the guy "penetrates the scared" and then seems to slip away. What a tax on the system when it's the single women who are raising the children, while the men refuse to pay fair child support; using their words and their money to scare them, to financially abuse them - while other men wouldn't want to "date a single mom". The shame continues and increases. While the women are threatened with punishment for even considering an abortion, and the men who fathered those children are "celebrated" for "sowing their seeds". White conservative men of privilege who still, in the awakened world of 2022, want to somehow control the reproductive rights of women. There is a worldwide gaslighting campaign going on ladies. Enough is enough. It's time to wake up and rise up. If you or someone you know has been sexually assaulted, please contact the National Sexual Assault Hotline at 1-800-656-HOPE (4673) or go to rainn.org “We know that we are, as women are rising, but we have to be doing a better job. I think of rising together.” - Candice Smiley “We have to be doing a better job of being willing to powerfully, compassionately and beautifully set aside our differences, holding our values lightly.
