It's listener submission time and we have two creepy tales for you today! In the first story, Chris and his friend Mike were interested in the paranormal and started using a Ouija board. Initially, nothing unusual happened, but then they connected with a spirit named Adam Greene. They asked for signs of his presence, and the planchette spun rapidly and flew off the board. Another time, they heard slow, pounding footsteps behind a sheet hung in the doorway, followed by a flash of light. Over time, Adam's messages turned darker and insulting, and he seemed to shift to an evil persona named "Fuzzy". Paranormal events intensified. Chris had an out-of-body dream where he flew over Mike and his parents. Mike revealed they had all seen a shadow fly over them in real life. Chris believes the entity may have been the demon Zozo based on the double Z in the name, the evil energy, and the bad luck they experienced, including Mike's uncle passing away. Eventually, they stopped using the board as too many disturbing things were happening.Story #2 involves Robin. When Robin was six, his friend Jason's father took them to a cemetery in the woods at 2-3am after giving them beer. They opened a grave, saw a skeleton, then heard loud footsteps and shrieking. Soon after, Robin began seeing terrifying faces peeking into his room at night that would vanish when he looked directly at them. It caused him great fear, keeping him up at night. One time, he woke to see a face at the foot of his bed staring at him, then his covers flew off by themselves. He ran out of the house in terror. At age 16, Robin returned to the cemetery with friends and was chased off by the angry landowner. That night, they all had the same nightmare of a ghostly female figure screaming at them from the disturbed grave. Now at 21, Robin still sees the scary faces and also hears disembodied sounds. Most frighteningly, he sees a tall, pitch-black figure darker than the surrounding darkness appearing in doorways and on the stairs. It sometimes charges at him on all fours before vanishing. Photos never capture this haunting presence. Robin doesn't believe enough in God to get an exorcism, so he is trying to cope with the ongoing supernatural torment.Patreon: Support Believing the Bizarre and get tons of extra content by joining our Patreon. For updates, news, and extra content, follow Believing the Bizarre on social media:InstagramFacebookTwitterDiscordWant to discuss the episode on the day it drops with Tyler and Charlie? By Adam Turteltaub There's no General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) in the US. Absent a comprehensive, national privacy law, states have stepped in to fill the gap. As Adam Greene (LinkedIn), Partner at Davis Wright Tremaine explains in this podcast, that's creating some complications. The California Consumer Privacy Act (CCPA) already differs from subsequent laws in several states which use language reminiscent of the GDPR. And while there are many similarities, some differences are substantial. For example, some state laws are targeted at businesses, not non-profits. That's an important distinction for healthcare with so many non-profit institutions. Perhaps the greatest challenge for organizations is figuring out which standard to follow, if any. Do they take a state-by-state approach, or one national approach based on the toughest state laws? Whatever the choice, it's important to determine what data you have since there may be limits on collection and a requirement to share that data with consumers who want to see it. Listen in to learn more about what the states are requiring and what you need to do to meet their expectations.

By Adam Turteltaub At the 2023 HCCA Compliance Institute there is a sure to be fascinating roundtable discussion lead by Marti Arvin, Vice President, Chief Compliance Officer, Erlanger Health System, Joan M. Podleski, Chief Privacy Officer, Children's Health and Adam Greene, Partner, Davis Wright Tremaine, LLP. They will be addressing a range of privacy and data-related issues. In this podcast one of the topics they discuss are the complexities around access. Often, for example, raw data is not kept in the main health information management system (HIMS). Another challenge is proper website disclosures and how visitor data is used and shared. OCR has issued guidance in this area that has earned a great deal of attention. But, it is likely to be a hard problem to solve since organizations will need to determine exactly what data they are collecting, using and storing. To help manage these issues they strongly argue for investing the time and effort in developing clear processes for responding to data requests. Then, monitor to ensure the policies are being followed. Take time also to understand what is in your designated record set and where it is stored. Then make sure your HIMS understands what qualifies as the designated record set. It's time also to reassess how your organization is managing telehealth now that the public health emergency is ending. There will be decreased flexibility and increased emphasis on keeping these interactions on HIPAA-compliant platforms. When you do move onto one of these platforms, be sure to have a business associate agreement. When looking at technology, they advise compliance be a part of decisions related to the use of patient apps. Whether your organization is thinking of building its own or relying on a third party, it's essential that the privacy requirements be a part of the discussion from the start. Listen in to a provocative conversation, but, be warned. It's going to make you want to join them in person at the HCCA Compliance Institute, April 23-26 in Anaheim, and online April 24-26.

In August 2009, the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) issued the Health Breach Notification Rule (Breach Rule), which requires vendors of personal health records and related entities to provide notice to consumers following a breach. After over a decade without any enforcement of the Breach Rule, the FTC issued a policy statement in September 2021 clarifying that health apps and connected device companies must comply with the Breach Rule. A patient in the ER hears the person in the next room coughing. He asks if that person has COVID-19. Can you tell him? An employee tells her boss she has COVID-19. What can the boss tell the rest of the office? The corona virus pandemic has led to endless questions about what is and isn’t permissible in both healthcare and other settings. Tackling the issues in this podcast are Joan Podleski, Chief Privacy Officer, Children’s Health; Marti Arvin, Executive Advisor, CynergisTek; and Adam Greene, Partner, Davis Wright Tremaine. As they explain, for healthcare organizations, there needs, as always, to be great sensitivity to HIPAA and what is considered personal health information (PHI). For employers in the rest of industry, HIPAA generally doesn’t apply but the American with Disabilities Act (ADA) may limit what you can and cannot share. It can even affect how you store the information about a COVID-19 patient in your systems. Compliance teams need to be alert to these and many other potential issues. Our podcast guests also advise compliance teams to ensure that IT systems are being used properly by remote employees. The family sitting around the dinner table is great at dinner, but not if there is PHI that the kids can see. "In September 2004, much hype was made of a buffer overflow vulnerability that existed in the Microsoft engine responsible for processing JPEG files. While the resulting vulnerability itself was nothing new, the fact that a vulnerability could be caused by a non-executable file commonly traversing public and private networks was reason for concern. File format vulnerabilities are emerging as more and more frequent attack vector. These attacks take advantage of the fact that an exploit can be carried within non-executable files that were previously considered to be innocuous. As a result, firewalls and border routers rarely prevent the files from entering a network when included as email attachments or downloaded from the Internet. As with most vulnerabilities, discovering file format attacks tends to be more art than science. We will present various techniques that utilize file format fuzzing that range from pure brute force fuzzing to intelligent fuzzing that requires an understanding of the targeted file formats. We will present a methodology for approaching this type of research and address issues such as automating the process. Techniques will be discussed to address challenges such as attacking proprietary file formats, overcoming exception handling and reducing false positives. The presentation will include demonstrations of fuzzing tools designed for both the *nix and Windows platforms that will be released at the conference and the disclosure of vulnerabilities discovered during the course of our research. In September 2004, much hype was made of a buffer overflow vulnerability that existed in the Microsoft engine responsible for processing JPEG files. Michael Sutton is a Director for iDEFENSE, a security intelligence company located in Reston, VA. He heads iDEFENSE Labs and the Vulnerability Aggregation Team (VAT). iDEFENSE Labs is the research and development arm of the company, which is responsible for discovering original security vulnerabilities in hardware and software implementations, while VAT focuses on researching publicly known vulnerabilities. His other responsibilities include developing tools and methodologies to further vulnerability research, and managing the iDEFENSE Vulnerability Contributor Program (VCP). Prior to joining iDEFENSE, Michael established the Information Systems Assurance and Advisory Services (ISAAS) practice for Ernst and Young in Bermuda. He is a frequent presenter at information security conferences. Michael obtained his Certified Information Systems Auditor (CISA) designation in 1998 and is a member of Information Systems Audit and Control Association (ISACA). He has completed a Master of Science in Information Systems Technology degree at George Washington University, has a Bachelor of Commerce degree from the University of Alberta and is a Chartered Accountant. Outside of the office, he is a Sergeant with the Fairfax Volunteer Fire Department. Adam Greene is a Security Engineer for iDEFENSE, a security intelligence company located in Reston, VA. His responsibilities at iDEFENSE include researching original vulnerabilities and developing exploit code as well as verifying and analyzing submissions to the iDEFENSE Vulnerability Contributor Program. His interests in computer security lie mainly in reliable exploitation methods, fuzzing, and UNIX based system auditing and exploit development. In his time away from computers he has been known to enjoy tea and foosball with strange old women.
