In 2017, New York City committed to a plan to close Rikers Island Jail Complex and build four smaller jails around the city in Manhattan's Chinatown, Downtown Brooklyn, Mott Haven in the Bronx, and Kew Gardens in Queens. The Chinatown jail is planned to be built on the site of the current jail in the neighborhood, but rather than repurposing or remodeling the building, the city plans to demolish it and build a 300-foot mega-jail, which would be the tallest jail in the world. The fight against the new Chinatown jail has drawn together a diverse coalition concerned about the effects of the jail on the Chinatown population and the predominantly Black and Latine populations incarcerated inside it. This episode of Cities@Tufts explores how concerned groups are working to bridge their differences and develop strategies to fight the new jail construction. In addition to this audio, you can watch the video and read the full transcript of their conversation on Shareable.net – while you're there get caught up on past lectures. fWotD Episode 2467: Williamsburgh Savings Bank Tower Welcome to featured Wiki of the Day where we read the summary of the featured Wikipedia article every day.The featured article for Monday, 5 February 2024 is Williamsburgh Savings Bank Tower. The Williamsburgh Savings Bank Tower, also known as One Hanson Place, is a skyscraper in the Fort Greene neighborhood of Brooklyn in New York City. Located at the northeast corner of Ashland Place and Hanson Place near Downtown Brooklyn, the tower was designed by Halsey, McCormack & Helmer and constructed from 1927 to 1929 as the new headquarters for the Williamsburgh Savings Bank. At 41 stories and 512 feet (156 m) tall, the Williamsburgh Savings Bank Tower was the tallest building in Brooklyn until 2009.The Williamsburgh Savings Bank was originally headquartered in Williamsburg, Brooklyn; its officers decided to construct a new skyscraper headquarters near Downtown Brooklyn in the mid-1920s. The bank occupied the lowest floors when the building opened on April 1, 1929, while the remaining stories were rented as offices. By the late 20th century, dentists' offices occupied much of the structure. The New York City Landmarks Preservation Commission designated the tower's exterior as a city landmark in 1977 and designated some of the interior spaces in 1996. Through several mergers, the Williamsburgh Savings Bank became part of HSBC Bank USA, which sold the building in 2004. The building's upper stories were converted to luxury condominium apartments from 2005 to 2007, while the banking hall became an event space. The building's main entrance is through a large arch on Hanson Place. At ground level, the tower is clad with limestone above a granite dado. Above the sixth story, the building is faced in brick with terracotta decoration, and a series of setbacks taper to a clock tower and a domed roof. Inside is an entrance vestibule and lobby with ornately decorated marble and metalwork. The 63-foot-high (19 m) banking room includes a nave, aisles, and a chancel—spaces similar to those found in a church. A basement lobby leads to Atlantic Terminal and the Atlantic Avenue–Barclays Center station, while a mezzanine-level ladies' lounge overlooks the banking room. When the Williamsburgh Savings Bank Tower was completed, there was commentary about both the building's architecture and its symbolism as Brooklyn's tallest building. Over the years, local residents have used the building both as a clock and as a landmark for giving out directions, and the tower has been used as a filming location. This recording reflects the Wikipedia text as of 01:15 UTC on Monday, 5 February 2024.For the full current version of the article, see Williamsburgh Savings Bank Tower on Wikipedia. This podcast uses content from Wikipedia under the Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike License.Visit our archives at wikioftheday.com and subscribe to stay updated on new episodes.Follow us on Mastodon at @wikioftheday@masto.ai.Also check out Curmudgeon's Corner, a current events podcast.Until next time, I'm Matthew Standard.

Our conversations will start with understanding how they arrived at what they're doing now. More importantly, we will focus on discussing their vision for the future, looking out 5, 10, and 20 years. Today, we're joined by Regina Myer, a leading urban planner and President of the Downtown Brooklyn Partnership. Regina has also served the city as Senior Vice President for Hudson Yards Development Corporation and Director of the Brooklyn New York City Planning Department. Her background in zoning and economics has positioned her as a master developer, understanding where and how to reuse and create lively spaces. Listen to Regina speak about what it takes to create and sustain vibrant, livable communities and cities. Brooklyn's streetscape requires a unique understanding of urban form and social form. Regina shares her insights of blending commercial and residential functions. She brings out ideas to promote new urbanism within the neighborhood, work against gentrification, and secure resources for thoughtful urban development.  As Downtown Brooklyn continues its expansion, how will this mixed downtown define itself? Downtown Brooklyn's access to regional transportation has set the stage for new urbanism, promoting the creation of a more pedestrian, sustainable, local neighborhood. As Regina notes, “Urbanism is about making density work.” We must continue to support equitable downtown development to house New Yorkers and expand job markets that cater to local growth.   Time stamps: [01:41] - Regina Myer talks about growing up on Long Island while her parents owned a store in midtown Manhattan. [03:37] - How did Regina start working in Brooklyn? [06:03] - Regina gives her thoughts about working around areas like the Waterfront and Greenpoint. [08:42] - What happens when projects must balance urban form and social form? [10:32] - Regina shares the time she had to not only build a park project but finance the project. [12:57] - What are the four elements of park development? [14:36] - Regina talks about the carousel included at the Brooklyn waterfront. [16:06] - Downtown Brooklyn is blooming. What is Regina's perspective? [18:01] - What are the challenges for the future of developing Downtown Brooklyn? [20:11] - Brooklyn has a dynamic streetscape. [22:19] - What does new urbanism mean to Regina? [25:19] - Regina encourages a continuous investment in infrastructure that helps communities thrive. [27:20] - Solve problems in urban planning block by block. [30:11] - Thank you Regina for reminding us to support equitable and sustainable downtown development that caters to local growth. Who's That Girl? A New Girl Podcast

This podcast covers New Girl Season 3, Episode 5, The Box, which originally aired on October 15, 2013 and was written by Rob Rosell and directed by Andrew Fleming. Here's a quick recap of the episode:This episode reveals what Nick (... and Jess and Winston) would do with the money he inherits after his Dad's death. Schmidt is still soul searching after losing Cece and Elizabeth and wonders if he's a good person. We discuss Pop Culture References such as:Band Posters - In Nick's bedroom there are a number of band posters we saw this episode: The Black KeysCirca SurviveWe didn't talk about, but also saw the following posters:Coachella 2010 Lineup Poster - Founded in 1999, the Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival is an annual festival held east of Los Angeles in Indio, California. B38 by Pass Kontrol Poster - Pass Kontrol is an “art collective” community of friends who dedicated its energetic album, B38, to one of the greatest buslines that runs from Ridgewood to Downtown Brooklyn, NYC. Heathcliff - When Schmidt is leaving the bar with Nick, the “pickled” bar patron calls him Heathcliff. Additional Pop Culture References such as:YOLO - When Schmidt was wreaking havoc in the school, he yelled “YOLO” when he was being carried out. "YOLO" is an acronym for "you only live once" that became popular internet slang in 2012. The concept of “YOLO” is to live life to its fullest extent. This episode we discuss who is Most Likely To visit someone in the hospital after calling 911 for them, make a powerpoint presentation to get money back from a friend, help someone pay their bills, and spend money on quirky trivial things, like mall photos. We also cover Nick and Schmidt at the bar as our “Schmidtism”. For “Not in the 2020s” we mention how Schmidt described Elizabeth as “regular” and Nick spoke about how “girls don't listen” and what he said men want. In our “Yes in the 2020s” we highlight Nick's note about equality and not doing jury duty or paying his taxes until gay marriage was legal everywhere, which it now is in the U.S.A. We also explore the careers of Jillian Aremenante (Eileen) and Kimrie Lewis (Keysha), the guest stars of this episode. Also in this episode were the following guest stars who we do not discuss in the podcast: Steve Agee (Outside Dave - Previously discussed in S2E17), Jon Lovitz (Rabbi Feiglin), Derek Waters (Mike), Connor Rosen (Boy), James Wellington (Gordon), David Hutchison (Rabbi Julio), and Marty Ingels (Pickled Patron). We also discuss the continuation of baby animals on Jess's checks and how the song in the background when Nick is drinking at the bar is a She & Him song (which Zooey Deschanel is a part of). Neither of us found the bear this episode. While not discussed in the podcast, we noted other references in this episode including:Tango / Waltz - Nick mentions both of these classical dances when angrily ranting to Jess that he can also try to change her. These dances are often confused with each other; the Waltz is a ballroom dance from the 18th century, while the Tango is a variation of the Flamenco style of dance only dating back to the 1880s. The main difference between the two is the speed at which the dance is conducted.Shema Yisrael - When Schmidt saves the bike messenger he exclaims that they should rejoice in song and begins singing Shema Yisrael, which is a Jewish prayer. This prayer is typically part of a twice daily recitation and is typically taught to children to be said before sleeping. It has also been referenced and used in other TV shows as the last words for the character. This episode got a 7/10 rating from Kritika whose favorite character was Winston and Kelly rated this episode a 7.5/10 and her favorite character was Jess! Thanks for listening and stay tuned for Episode 6!Music: "Hotshot” by scottholmesmusic.comFollow us on Twitter, Instagram or email us at whosthatgirlpod@gmail.com!Website: https://smallscreenchatter.com/

New York Public Radio has recently appointed Kristina Newman-Scott, Executive Director of The Jerome L. Greene Performance Space. In her new role, Newman-Scott will oversee NYPR's broadcast venue and street-level event space and be responsible for setting the direction including the strategy for all curatorial, audience operational, and financial growth. She previously served as President of BRIC, a leading arts and media institution anchored in Downtown Brooklyn whose work spans contemporary visual and performing arts, media, and civic action. She was the first immigrant and first woman of color to serve as BRIC's President and one of the very few women of color to lead a major New York cultural institution. Under her tenure, BRIC embarked on an ambitious, human-centered process in pursuit of clarity of purpose in the form of a new four-year Strategic Plan. That process led to a re-articulated mission informed by the institution's impact and legacy, and a new vision statement guided by aspirational goals, centered on artists and the communities served by BRIC. Additionally, she led a renewed commitment to equity, diversity, and inclusivity in every aspect of the organization. Newman-Scott's awards and recognitions include being named one of the City and State New York's, 2021 Telecommunications Power 50 (individuals shaping New York's digital future), an Observer's NYC 2020 Arts Power 50, a National Arts Strategies Creative Community Fellow, A Hive Global Leadership Selectee, and a Next City Urban Vanguard. Previously, Newman-Scott served as the Director of Culture and State Historic Preservation Officer for the State of Connecticut; Director of Marketing, Events and Cultural Affairs for the City of Hartford; Director of Programs at the Boston Center for the Arts; and Director of Visual Arts at Hartford's Real Art Ways. Kristina was appointed to the NYC Department of Cultural Affairs Advisory Commission in 2020 and currently serves on the Brooklyn Arts Council, National Arts Strategies, New Yorkers for Culture and Arts and the New York Arts Education Roundtable. Kristina was born and raised in Kingston, Jamaica and worked as a practicing artist and TV/radio host in her home country before moving to the US in 2005.
