All this & much, much less. Debts No Honest Man Can Pay is over 2 rock-solid hours of musical eclectica & other noodle stories. The show started in 2003 at WHFR-FM (Dearborn, MI), moved to WGWG-FM (Boiling Springs, NC) in 2006 & Plaza Midwood Community Radio (Charlotte, NC) in 2012, with a brief pit-stop at WLFM-FM (Appleton, WI) in 2004.

For the final episode of 2024 we're joined by the formidable Pat Kane, who answers our questions about his dual career as a musician and writer with what co-host Martin Colyer describes as "an almost frightening eloquence". Commencing with the formative memories of his late father singing Frank Sinatra songs to him at bedtime — and his lifelong fixation with Ol' Blue Eyes — Pat talks about Hue and Cry, the R&B-infused pop group he formed with his brother Greg in 1983. Reflections on the success of singles such as 1987's 'Labour of Love' prompt a general discussion of '80s "Brit Soul", with significant input from fellow practitioners Mark Pringle and Martin Colyer. The two linchpins of Hot House recall the 1987 sessions they recorded in the Southern-soul oasis of Muscle Shoals, Alabama. After bringing the Hue and Cry story up to the present day, Jasper introduces clips from Daryl Easlea's 2001 audio interview with Chic's Nile Rodgers. As a tribute to the group's Alfa Anderson, who died two days before this episode was recorded, Daryl's splendid interview provides the perfect excuse to express our love for disco's greatest self-contained band. Finally, we ask our guest about his exceptional writing as a cultural and political journalist, focusing in particular on his brilliant pieces about Brian Eno (1995) and Michael Jackson (2009). Mark and Jasper then talk us out with quotes from (and remarks on) their favourite newly-added pieces in the RBP library. Many thanks to special guest Pat Kane. Subscribe to his Substack at patkane.substack.com. Pieces discussed: Frank Sinatra, Hue and Cry: "How Well Do You Know Your Brother?", Headin' South: Muscle Shoals '87, Brian Eno: Jingle the Other One, The Man in Our Mirror: Michael Jackson, Nile Rodgers audio, Have You Heard What They're Singing These Days?, Don Cherry, Alicia Bridges, Billy Fury, Rage Against The Machine.

Here's the long lost album by Johhny Mathis that was shelved back in 1980...it was produced by Bernard Edwards & Nile Rodgers of Chic. Their sleek style was sophisticated, taut, and lean, with infectious rhythms propelled by Rodgers' searing guitar, Edwards' melodic bass,Tony Thompson's unpredictable drums, and the lustrous harmonies of singers including Alfa Anderson, Luci Martin, Fonzi Thornton, and Michelle Cobbs. Chic went beyond Disco, incorporating strains of funk, jazz, rock, Latin, and classical into their composition and productions. And they found a kindred adeventurous soul in Johnny Mathis. So join us... as we dive into this long lost #Yachtyashell treasure! --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/the-yacht-rock-show-with-eddie-ganz/support

We're talking about diabetic macular edema with musical inspiration from Maxwell. Along with fellow musicians D'Angelo and Erykah Badu, Maxwell has been credited with helping to shape what has been termed the "neo soul" movement that rose to prominence during the late 1990s Diabetic Macular Edema (DME) is an accumulation of fluid in the macula-part of the retina that controls our most detailed vision abilities-due to leaking blood vessels. In order to develop DME, you must first have diabetic retinopathy. Diabetic retinopathy is caused by damage to the blood vessels in the tissue at the back of the eye (retina). Poorly controlled blood sugar is a risk factor. Early symptoms include floaters, blurriness, dark areas of vision, and difficulty perceiving colors. Blindness can occur. Guests include singer Alfa Anderson, Diabetic Macular Edema patient Maryanne Kass, Artist Bryce Chisholm, the Charlie's Angels of Outreach, Poet Lorraine Brooks and Mama Rose Marie. Throughout the podcast we will be featuring selected songs from several of several of Maxwell's albums courtesy of SONY Music.
Our first ever We Don't Even Know Variety Fest held on April 23, 2017 at DCTV in downtown Manhattan was a smashing success! To all of you who were able to attend - we love you and because of you we are certain to do it all over again next year. Although we won't be able to share all of the performances via our podcast format from that day, we are honored to share with you our dear friend, a living music encyclopedia, WFMU's Duane (Train) Harriott and his interview with soul and dance music icon, one of the original lead vocalists of Chic, the legendary Alfa Anderson. Duane explains his spiritual connection to disco and introduces us to the amazing Alfa Anderson. Alfa talks about coming to New York City from Augusta, Georgia as a young woman seeking a teaching job until the moment she realized she could actually make a living as a singer. Does the name Luther Vandross ring a bell? "Big" Luther and Alfa used to hang out on a park bench near W. 72nd Street before they became famous! Alfa explains to us how to be "Haughty!" Duane talks about the music of Chic, how it changed his life and plays another one of his favorite Chic songs including At Last I'm Free. You will also hear about Alfa's songwriting process for her brand new solo release, From My Heart and thank goodness she could not resist singing along with her new song titled "When Luther Sings." Alfa is truly a magical spirit and we were so humbled by her presence. We hope you enjoy hearing her as much as we did. Check out Alfa's website and her Facebook page here. Be sure to join us in attendance at Alfa's upcoming show at Joe's Pub on 7/7/17 at 7:30pm! We will see you there. Special note - this was recorded in a cavernous room & you may hear the sounds of a creaking door throughout the interview. Probably spirits who just had to join us in the room for the interview perhaps?

New York, NY (April 11, 2017) – Alfa Anderson, former member of the iconic funk soul band Chic (Le Freak, Good Times, Everybody Dance), will release a new single, "When Luther Sings," in honor of her longtime friend Luther Vandross 66th birthday. The rousing, heartfelt tribute is written by Anderson and co-produced by multi-talented Bert Price. Available nationwide on April 20, When Luther Sings is the first single from Anderson’s long-awaited debut solo album, From My Heart (set for release summer 2017). “When Luther Sings is my homage to good friend and musical mentor Luther Vandross; the song is autobiographical in many ways,” said Anderson. “As our professional relationship grew, he taught me so much about vocal technique and stage presence. As a matter of fact, Luther is one of the co-creators of the Chic vocal sound. I am forever grateful for the doors he opened for me and for the golden friendship we shared. For years, Anderson was an integral member of Vandross' touring band and performed at Wembley Stadium, among many other prestigious venues around the world. Her vocals can be heard on popular Vandross albums such as Give Me the Reason and The Night I Fell in Love, which Rolling Stone Magazine voted as one of the 100 Best Albums of the Eighties. It was Vandross who invited Anderson to a vocal session for Chic with Nile Rodgers, Bernard Edwards, Tony Thompson and Norma Jean Wright. ”Chic went on to see commercial success with disco songs that include "Dance, Dance, Dance (Yowsah, Yowsah, Yowsah)" (1977), "Everybody Dance" (1977), "Le Freak" (1978), "I Want Your Love" (1978), "Good Times" (1979), and "My Forbidden Lover" (1979).
