Battles Of The American Civil War

THE WAR IS OVER! That's right, we have reached the end of the bloodiest war on American soil. We start off the episode with the battle of Columbus, GA on April 16th, 1865, where Wilson's Raid comes to an end. Some historians have argued that this battle was the actual last battle of the war instead of the widely accepted battle of Palmito Ranch.  Next up is the small battle of Anderson, SC on May 1st. The Union troops arrived in Anderson to look for the fleeing Jefferson Davis, when he was not located they looted the city.  May 12th-13th, The Battle Of Palmito Ranch, the OFFICIAL last battle of the war. This battle basically took place because of a young Union Colonel hoping to make a name for himself and move up in rank according to some historians. A pointless battle, which some consider a post war action, it nevertheless was the last battle of the war. THE WAR IS OVER.  Subscribe to our YouTube! https://www.youtube.com/@bangdangnetwork

Here, There, and Everywhere: A Beatles Podcast

John Kosh, known simply as Kosh, is an English art director, album cover designer, graphic artist, and documentary producer/director. He was born in London, England and rose to prominence in the mid-1960s while designing for the Royal Ballet and the Royal Opera House. He was the creative director of Apple Corps for The Beatles and was art director and album cover designer for Abbey Road and Let It Be, as well as Hotel California, James Taylor's Greatest Hits, and more.    Today, Kosh sits down with Jack Lawless to discuss his work, reminisce on his memories of working with The Beatles and John and Yoko, tell stories about designing Abbey Road's and Hotel California's covers, the WAR IS OVER! campaign, and much more. The group consisted of four members: John Lennon, Paul McCartney, George Harrison, and Ringo Starr. The Beatles' journey began in the late 1950s when Lennon formed a skiffle group called The Quarrymen. McCartney and Harrison joined later, and the lineup eventually evolved into The Beatles. Ringo Starr replaced their original drummer, Pete Best, in 1962. The Beatles achieved unprecedented success and popularity during the 1960s, often referred to as the "Beatlemania" era. Their music was a blend of various genres, including rock and roll, pop, and later, elements of Indian music and psychedelia. They wrote and recorded numerous hit songs, becoming one of the most innovative and successful bands in the history of popular music. Some of their most famous albums include: 1. **"Please Please Me" (1963) 2. **"A Hard Day's Night" (1964):** The soundtrack to their first film. 3. **"Rubber Soul" (1965):** Marking a shift toward a more experimental sound. 4. **"Revolver" (1966):** Further experimentation and the use of studio techniques. 5. **"Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band" (1967):** Widely considered one of the greatest albums of all time. 6. **"The White Album" (1968):** A double album with diverse musical styles. 7. **"Abbey Road" (1969):** Their final studio album, known for its iconic cover and medley of songs. The Beatles' legacy extends far beyond their music. They revolutionized the music industry, set new standards for songwriting, and influenced countless artists across genres. Their impact on popular culture, fashion, and social movements of the 1960s is immeasurable. The Beatles remain one of the most celebrated and enduring musical acts in history.

The original podcast post is here: https://pixelatedgeek.com/2024/02/binary-system-podcast-399-wtnv-242-the-new-branch-and-the-oscar-nominated-animated-shorts/ On the latest episode of Night Vale the Librarians broke out of their cages but some heroes saved the day andnoweverythingisfineTheEnd SO! HOW ABOUT THOSE OSCAR ANIMATED SHORTS? (Kidding, it was a fun episode of Night Vale, we're just really excited to talk about cartoons.) Anyway, massive spoiler warnings as we discuss our favorite Oscar-nominated animated shorts, which were as surprising as they were upsetting, just how we like them. (This episode of VagueCast is brought to you by the 2024 Oscar Animated Shorts Collection: yiiiiikes.) And before we wrap up, we also have to go over the latest Hugo-Award-Clusterf*ck news, which was outdated even before we finished recording because it KEEPS GETTING WORSE. This week's outro is a clip from Illusion by Darkfluxx. Correction: we said passenger pigeon several times, when we meant carrier pigeon. Homing pigeon would've been even better. Correction 2: War Is Over isn't a Beatles song, John Lennon released it outside of the band. Elizabeth apologizes to all the John Lennon fans out there. For that and for saying the cartoon would've been better if the song wasn't in it. In case you're curious, here's the list of all the Oscar Winning Animated Shorts. Turns out yes, some years the winner wasn't particularly family-friendly (2021's "The Windshield Wiper" has a lot of sexy content) but 2015's "Bear Story" beat "World of Tomorrow", and 2016's "Piper" beat "Pear Cider and Cigarettes" and that's when Elizabeth decided family-friendly beats edgy-and-cool most years. As of today the Oscar-nominated animated feature Nimona is still up for free on YouTube! Here's a good write-up of the Hugo Awards debacle. (Short version: the board self-censored anything they thought MIGHT upset the Chinese government, and were as stupid about it as you can possibly imagine.) (And the post doesn't mention the fact that the board did business with a Chinese company that's been sanctioned by the US Government, but we're still waiting to hear how all that turns out.) Kosh is a Grammy Award Winning art director and former design director for Apple Records. His first project was John Lennon and Yoko's “War Is Over (if you want it)” Christmas card, which led to the worldwide WAR IS OVER billboard campaign that continues to this day. He designed The Beatles' Let It Be book and album package and the Abbey Road album cover, as well as John & Yoko's Wedding Album boxed set. He worked extensively with Linda Ronstadt, garnering three Grammys for her albums, Simple Dreams, Get Closer and Lush Life. He designed and art directed the iconic logo and cover, Hotel California for the Eagles, the classic logo for ELO as well as several albums for James Taylor, Jimmy Buffet and Dan Fogelberg. In today's episode, Kosh shares more memorable moments working for The Beatles and Lennon, namely the day he got to witness The Beatles perform LIVE for the very last time on top of the Apple Corps Headquarters on Jan 30th, 1969, and his participation in John Lennon's art exhibit titled Bag One, which showcased the erotic art Lennon sketched during his honeymoon with Yoko Ono. We also discuss the Marvin Gaye album cover, Here, My Dear, he worked on that so aptly exposed the pain and emotion Gaye was feeling during his divorce at the time. Kosh also had the privilege of working with Richard Pryor and art directing several albums for James Taylor, Dan Fogelberg and Jimmy Buffet - and we cover it all in this episode of My Rock Moment. Dwight Rehel a bellman at the Fairmonth Queen Elizabeth takes us on a tour of room 1742 at The Fairmonth Queen Elizabeth Hotel in downtown Montreal, where The second of two bed-ins took place. Their second bed-in was planned to take place in New York, but Lennon was not allowed into the U.S. because of his 1968 cannabis conviction.[8] Instead they intended to hold the event in the Bahamas at the Sheraton Oceanus Hotel, flying there on May 24, 1969, but after spending one night in the heat, they decided to move to Canada. They first landed in Toronto and stayed at the King Edward Hotel. They interviewed with Canadian Immigration and were granted a 10 Day Visitor Status. The choice was between Toronto and Montreal. Since they needed the New York press coverage, they decided to move it to Montreal because of its proximity to New York.[9]They flew to Montreal on May 26 where they stayed in Rooms 1738, 1740, 1742 and 1744 at the Queen Elizabeth Hotel. During their seven-day stay, they invited Timothy Leary, Tommy Smothers, Dick Gregory, Murray the K, Al Capp, Allen Ginsberg and others, and all but the hostile Capp[10] sang on the peace anthem "Give Peace a Chance", recorded by André Perry in the hotel room on June 1, 1969. Perry also recorded Lennon and Ono performing Ono's song "Remember Love" after everyone else had left the room.[11][12] The Canadian Broadcasting Corporation conducted interviews from the hotel room.[13] The event received mixed reaction from the American press.[14][15]In December 1969, Lennon and Ono spread their messages of peace with billboards reading "WAR IS OVER! If You Want It – Happy Christmas From John and Yoko". These billboards went up in eleven major world cities.Source:https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bed-ins_for_Peace#galeforcewins is an inspirational podcast with New episodes every Tuesday evening on Youtube or wherever you get your podcasts. We also launched Gale Force Wins on the Rogers Television Network in St. John's on January 31st 2023 with a series of 12 episodes. You can also visit https://galeforcewins.com/To message Gerry visit: https://www.linkedin.com/in/gerrycarew/To message Allan visit: https://www.linkedin.com/in/allanadale/

Andrew Wilson has been in therapy for decades.  PTSD from the Vietnam War, a war he never wanted to be a part of, riddled Andrew's soul. Andrew is a Vietnam veteran, and, almost half a century later, Andrew cannot completely forgive himself for his role as soldier in this controversial war.  Andrew describes himself as a young coward, unable to stand up for his beliefs as Mohammad Ali did all those years ago.   In this raw episode, Andrew talks about the horrors of the Vietnam War; the rampant drug use; the confusion, guilt, and the ensuing PTSD that plagued him relentlessly. But this is also a story of overcoming demons through the forgiveness of Andrew's savior, Jesus Christ.  Andrew is a participant in the "New Revolution," a movement to spread the beliefs of the Founding Fathers regarding this grand experiment we call America. Andrew does not see a dark future for America, but a bright future as we come together, united in the goodness of freedom and support of our marvelous republic. Andrew is an accomplished musician and was a member of different bands in his young adult years.  As a part of the "All Of The Above" band, Andrew wrote the song, "The War Is Over."  It was a song written for those who served during the Vietnam War.  You can find the recording on YouTube.  The War Is Over  It is a poignant reminder of the trials our military endured during and after this controversial war. Andrew Wilson spends his time helping other veterans deal with the mental scars of war.

Born in Tokyo in 1933, she moved with her family to New York in the mid-1950s and enrolled at Sarah Lawrence College. Over the next decade she lived in New York, Tokyo, and London, greatly influencing the international development of Fluxus and Conceptual art.Ono's earliest works were often based on instructions that she communicated to the public in verbal or written form. Painting to Be Stepped On (1960–61), for example, invited people to tread upon a piece of canvas placed directly on the floor, either physically or in their minds. Though easily overlooked, the work radically questioned the division between art and the everyday. In 1964, she compiled more than 150 of her instructions in her groundbreaking artist's book, Grapefruit. The instructions range from feasible to improbable, often relying upon the reader's imagination to complete the work. At turns poetic, humorous, unsettling, and idealistic, Ono's early instruction pieces anticipated her later work, such as Cut Piece (1964), a performance in which people were invited to cut away portions of her clothing; Sky Machine (1966), a sculpture that speaks to her environmental concerns; and To See the Sky (2015), a spiral staircase installed beneath a skylight that visitors were invited to ascend in order to contemplate the sky.Ono's collaborations with her late husband, Beatles legend John Lennon, including Bed-In(1969), a weeklong antiwar protest in their honeymoon suite, boldly communicated her commitment to social justice. Never one to confine her work to the gallery space, Ono continues to perform with her avant-garde Plastic Ono Band, promote world peace through her ongoing WAR IS OVER! campaign, and create works that blur the boundaries between art, politics, and society. In recent years, she has embraced social media to communicate her artistic and activist messages to even broader audiences. From https://www.moma.org/artists/4410. For more information about Yoko Ono:“Map Piece”: https://teaching.ellenmueller.com/walking/2021/05/30/yoko-ono-map-piece-1962-64/Grapefruit: https://www.simonandschuster.com/books/Grapefruit/Yoko-Ono/9780743201100“Peel, Peek, Touch, Rub: Reading Yoko Ono's ‘Grapefruit'”: https://www.newyorker.com/books/page-turner/peel-peek-touch-rub-reading-yoko-onos-grapefruitPhoto by Earl McGehee: https://www.flickr.com/photos/ejmc/5548777884/

1982 - October: Squeeze “Singles - 45 and Under”

What the Riff?!?

Play Episode Listen Later Dec 6, 2021 44:44

Squeeze came out of the mid-70's New Wave scene in the UK, but would cross genres into Rockabilly, R&B, and Psychedelia by the early 80's.  In 1982 they released Singles - 45's and Under as a compilation album of their biggest hits.  Squeeze was led by two singer songwriters, Chris Dilford (rhythm guitar and vocals) and Glenn Tilbrook (keyboards, lead guitar, vocals) who composed most of their material.  At the time of the release of this “greatest hits” album, the band had broken up, leaving only Dilford and Tilbrook as a duet.  The pair would normally work with Dilford writing the lyrics and Tilbrook writing and singing the music.  Squeeze was inspired by the Kinks, the Beatles, David Bowie, and Elvis Costello (who co-produced their breakthrough album, East Side Stories).  They started when Dilford stole money from his mom's pocketbook to place an ad for a guitarist "for his band," which didn't exist.  Tilbrook was the only one who responded, and the rest, as they say, was history. The group wove stories with their songs, usually lighthearted, with a healthy sense of humor.  While Wayne and Bruce are away, friends of the show Todd Hendricks and Bill Cook join Rob and Brian for this album feature. TemptedThe first commercial breakthrough comes from their fourth studio album, “East Side Story.” It is unusual because it features Paul Carrack on lead vocals rather than Glenn Tilbrook or Chris Dilford.  The sound was inspired by The Temptations, and the lyrics were inspired from Dilford's experiences in touring North America.Up the JunctionThis deeper cut was originally released in 1979 on their second album "Cool for Cats."  Glenn Tilbrook takes on his normal role as lead singer.  This is a little bit of working class humor about a man living with a woman who becomes pregnant.  The song is unusual in that it doesn't have a chorus, but tells the story in a "stream of consciousness" style.Pulling Mussels (from the Shell)Originally released on their third studio album, Argybargy, this track is an audio snapshot of a British budget holiday camp by the sea.  It did not hit the US charts, but got airplay on College radio stations.  "Pulling Mussels" is British slang for sex.  There are lots of humorous lyrics in this story.Black Coffee in BedThe first single from the fifth Squeeze album, "Sweets from a Stranger," and was a hit on the US Mainstream Chart - the only song to chart from that album.  Elvis Costello and Paul Young sing backing vocals on this track about a lost love. ENTERTAINMENT TRACK:Main Theme from the television series "St. Elsewhere”This hospital-centered show debuted in October 1982.  The stories centered around a Catholic hospital named Saint Eligius.  Howie Mandel would get his big break as a member of this cast. STAFF PICKS:Jack & Diane by John CougarBrian brings us a famous “little ditty” about high school romance by John Cougar before he took on his real last name.  Though some thought it was autobiographical, John Mellencamp has said that it is a story about what he observed in small town America.  Mellencamp didn't like the song at first and didn't want to release it, but was fortunately convinced to do so by others.Abracadabra by the Steve Miller BandBill Cook (aka “Lil‘ Wayne”) features a hit from Miller's 12th studio album.  Though we're not convinced that this is Miller's best work (and the video is horrible), the “breathy synthesizer” and pop sensibilities gave it significant airplay on both pop and rock stations. The lyrics were inspired by Diana Ross.Somebody's Baby by Jackson BrowneSpecial guest Todd Hendricks' staff pick was the last Jackson Browne song to chart.  It didn't appear on any Browne album until years later on a "Greatest Hits" album.  It was released on the soundtrack from "Fast Times at Ridgemont High."  Browne was originally known as a songwriter before he rolled out his solo work. When the War Is Over by Cold ChiselRob's closes out the staff picks with a track recommended by Mark Whyte, a friend of the show from Australia.  Cold Chisel is a very popular band in Australia, but is not well known in the United States. This is off their 1982 album, "Circus Animals" and features multiple singers taking turns on lead vocals. INSTRUMENTAL TRACK:Spunky by Bob JamesThis week's podcast closes out with a jazz instrumental from James' 1982 album "Hands Down."

This set has been updated by removing two Jingle Bells' and 'Santa Clause Is Coming To Town' versions and 'White Christmas was moved to a different location for better flow and cohesion. Well HO! HO! HO! After careful consideration as to what I will likely do next year — I decided to go ahead and mix-up this batch of modern-day holiday classic dance remixes for everyone's enjoyment. Well, maybe not everyone. This special edition EDM set features a variety of genres including: Electro House, Dubstep, Trance, Trap, Hip-Hop, House and even Eurodance. It's quite a bit to digest and may not be for everyone but that's why Party Favorz has years of holiday remix sets that may be more to your liking in our back catalog. I listed to the original mix yesterday and was impressed at how I was able to get such a diverse group of songs at wildly different BPM(s) to mesh cohesively. One of the tricks is to duplicate a few songs like "All I Want For Christmas,' 'Santa Claus Is Coming To Town,' and 'Last Christmas.' To be certain there were multiple copies of 'Jingle Bells' (a song I've always hated mainly for its lack of structure) 'Christmas, Baby Please Come Home' (one of my all-time favorites especially by Darlene Love and U2) and others but in the spirit of trying to keep this set short and sweet — I went with what worked. My only disappoint was no remix of 'Have Yourself A Merry Little Christmas,' where the version by the Pretenders has special meaning to me. There was a decent remix of the Lou Rawls' jazzed up version but I couldn't make it work. Overall, I'm glad I did this even though it's a one-off. Some of the songs will be included in next year's 'ULTIMATE' X-mas Dance set — especially the illusive dance mix of 'Happy X-mas (War Is Over)' by John Lennon and the Plastic Ono Band. I stumbled across this remix late last year and stowed it away for a rainy day and I'm pleased as punch to have stumbled across it. Originally, I had three bonus sets scheduled for November then whittled it down to two but I was a overwhelmed with what was already on my plate so I dropped both and kept the Purple Disco Machine Legay set. I thought I'd give y'all a heads up that one of those sets is going to see the light of day by the end of the week. It's totally out of leftfield and wholly unexpected but it's going to be one epic party set worth your time. That's all I'm saying at the moment. Until the next time...ENJOY! John Lennon wasn’t one to do things small. Whether it was his activism or his music, he wanted to touch as many people as possible...which is probably why it’s no surprise that he set himself a goal to write a Christmas song that would last forever. Here’s the story of how a slogan from a billboard campaign would go on to fulfill Lennon’s lofty ambitions. Today, Behind the Christmas Hits features John Lennon’s Happy Xmas (War is Over).” #BehindTheChristmasHits is Presented by Pizza Pizza! All four Beatles have recorded solo Christmas songs but John Lennon’s was the first. According to Yoko Ono, she and John loved Christmas music. Whether it was Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer or White Christmas, there were always holiday songs playing when their son Sean was young. And it was John who’d put up most of the decorations. But this is a Christmas song that’s also a protest song. It began with John and Yoko’s famous “bed ins” in March 1969 to protest the Vietnam War. The first was at the Amsterdam Hilton Hotel and the second was at the Queen Elizabeth Hotel in Montreal. As Christmas drew closer that year, John & Yoko decided to take their campaign in a new direction. They would buy billboards in Toronto, New York, Hong Kong and nine other cities with the message: WAR IS OVER…IF YOU WANT IT. In smaller letters along the bottom it read “Happy Christmas from John & Yoko.” That wasn’t a promotional campaign, teasing the release of a new song. It was simply a message to the world. War is Over...If You Want It was an anti-war slogan that had been used in other songs like The Unknown Solider by The Doors. But still...there was no idea to record a song using that slogan...at least...not yet. The song wouldn’t come for another two years, after Lennon’s biggest success as a solo artist. Imagine was John’s first #1 hit in Canada and around the world since leaving The Beatles. When reflecting on Imagine’s success, John said he now understood what you had to do to make your viewpoints heard. Quote: “Put your political message across with a little honey." He would go back to the words used in the billboard campaign as the foundation of a song that promoted unity and optimism for Christmas. The song was recorded in October of ’71. The legendary Phil Spector was the producer. Before dressing up in costume to go trick or treating on Halloween Day, 30 kids from the Harlem Community Choir, between the ages of 4 and 12, came in to record their backing vocals. It was released just about a month later - on December 1 — not as part of an album, but as a green see-through vinyl single. However, because it came out just 3 1/2 weeks before Christmas, it wasn’t a hit that year at all. A year later, when the song was finally released in the UK, people started to take notice. John once said he always wanted to write a Christmas record that would last forever. That was during a radio interview in the mid-70’s and before the song had become what it is now. The song has been covered by countless other artists and Lennon’s original has re-entered the charts numerous times, including in 2019, peaking at #42 on Billboard’s Hot 100. John Lennon never did record another Christmas song, but that doesn’t matter - he succeeded in his goal to write one that would last forever. Those of us who are in Christ have PEACE WITH GOD! The War is over! Hostility has ended! The War with God is over, and this is an important fact for us to know! Japan surrendered to the United States on August 15th 1945 bringing WW2 officially to an end but the last Japanese soldier did not surrender his post until 1972! Almost 30 years after the fighting had stopped! He was on a remote island in the South Sea and just prior to Japan's surrender he had received orders to disrupt trade and shipping and not take his own life. You see he didn’t know the war was over! So he just kept on fighting, and we do the same thing! We think I hope God’s not mad at me, I hope he doesn’t come down hard on me, He must be really upset with me.. We don’t get it! THE WAR IS OVER! The Sin that separated us from God has been dealt with forgiven; it has been separated from us once and for all because of Jesus! Support the show (https://www.patreon.com/yourdailybible)

In our final day of this week-long series seeking to put our faith to action, today we're going to look at the victory we have in God's love. As God's people, he's inviting us into his victory, a victory we so desperately need. May God establish us in his power today, and may chains fall off us and others as God guides us into a lifestyle of victory in him. Our Scripture for today comes from Romans 8:37-39, and today's worship is The War Is Over by Kalley Heiligenthal. First15 is a daily devotional written and recorded by Craig Denison. Opening Monologues. World Peace for Christmas. War Is Over. On The Verge of The Wall. Government Shuts Down. All kinds of great stocking stuffers headed into the holidays. President Trump announces American troops coming home from Syria and Afghanistan. So maybe our wars don't always have to be endless? Neoconservative Bill Kristol has another cow. The Military Industrial Complex goes apoplectic. Secretary of Defense Jim "Mad Dog" Mattis resigns, along with grandstanding Obama holdover Brett McGurk. But surely most Americans -- including peaceniks, pacifists, flower children, monks, nuns and Buddhists -- will be uniting in peace-loving joy. Meanwhile, Trump fights for border security against the "weird passion" for wide open borders shared by Chuck Schumer & Nancy Pelosi. A bit of stressful "careening" from Trump along the way this week, but once again we thankfully arrive at the proper destination. The sovereignty battles we want, the battles MAGA can win. Whose borders shall we protect? Our own for once? Time for Mitch McConnell to fight for The Wall the way he fought for Kavanaugh. Plus, amazing new Gallup polling data shows Trump has earned 93% popularity with Republican Women and has achieved the highest intra-party approvals of any president in American history. Wow. Also, another Christmas Yodel and notes on The Weezer Thing. It’s December, 1969, and The Beatles find themselves with a #1 album on both sides of the Atlantic, a #1 single with Something/Come Together, an album and film in the works for release in the new year, and...all but finished as a functioning group. What remained of the dream was in the process of being sorted out by Allen Klein and his people at Apple, while the band members focused on individual pursuits. Perhaps most notable amongst those pursuits being George Harrison going back out on tour as a support musician for Delaney & Bonnie throughout England that month. The Beatle who pushed so hard to petition his bandmates to cease touring back in the summer of 1966 found himself to be the first Beatle to join a tour since that time. But George wasn’t the only Beatle emerging onto the concert stage in December, John and Yoko were back again to promote a message of peace with the aid of Unicef for a special Peace at Christmas concert event. Accompanying the performance was a worldwide billboard campaign from the couple proclaiming “WAR IS OVER! If You Want It.” - a message of peace in time for the holiday season. The holiday season also brought with it not one but two releases from The Beatles, first in the form of the sixth and final installment of the Beatles Christmas Message for the fan club. The second release at last brought to the public the group’s 1968 performance of Across the Universe, appearing on a World Wildlife Fund charity LP. Ringo’s co-starring film role in the Peter Sellers smash The Magic Christian brought with it an accompanying soundtrack featuring songs by Badfinger and contributions from Paul McCartney to round out a very busy month and bring us, at last, to the end of 1969.
